Orin, wh says his parents always taught him that “kindness is a virtue that we shuld all try t pssess,” came
up with the idea f the Race t Kindness campaign - a series f events t help thers. Orin describes the campaign
as “just an idea where I wuld spread kindness and peple wuld be able t jin the race by spreading kindness in
their wn cmmunities.” He decided t start by helping children with health prblems in the hspital, saying, “What
better way t amuse a kid than a ty?” S, he used his winnings t buy as many tys as pssible and launched a ty
fair t gather mre. He cllected ver 600 tys, which were dnated t the Children’s Health Hspital in Dallas in
021.
But Orin was just getting started. After the ty fair, he launched an ambitius “Race t 100, 000 meals” t help
fd-insecure peple in his cmmunity. Race t Kindness partnered with a lcal nnprfit rganizatin t help get
00, 000 meals dnated and t feed peple wh might nt have had a meal fr Thanksgiving. The result? “We were

When adult humans meet a baby, many can’t help speaking in a higher-pitched (更高音的), sing-sng y vice.
This shift, knwn as parentese, is nt unique t humans — it has als been bserved in animals like mnkeys and
grillas. Nw, scientists are adding ne mre species t that list: bttlense dlphins.
Dlphins are intelligent animals that live and hunt in grups. They cmmunicate in a unique way: every
individual prduces its wn signature sund that acts much like an ID card, usually by its first birthday. But hw
des each cme up with its distinctive whistle? Fr babies, it might have smething t d with listening t Mum.
T slve this mystery, researchers examined the sunds mther dlphins, make.
Scientists studied 34 years’ wrth f recrdings f sunds made by 19 female bttlense dlphins. When the
mther dlphins were near their yung, they cntinued t make their signature sund, but at a higher frequency.
They als used a wider range f frequencies than they did when their babies were nt nearby.
This discvery suggests that using these mdificatins mther dlphins assist their yung in learning hw t
prduce these calls themselves. Since dlphin babies ften spend sme years with their mthers befre living n
their wn, it makes sense that this adaptatin wuld help them learn t cmmunicate. At the very least, the higher-
pitched whistle likely gets the babies’ attentin. “It’s imprtant fr a baby t knw,’ Oh, Mum’s talking t me
nw,’” says marine bilgist June Mann.
This kind f research culd help us understand hw language develped in humans. “It is abslutely essential
t have basic knwledge abut ther species and hw they cmmunicate,” says Mann. “I wuld be really interested
t see whether dlphins als change their sunds when interacting with babies f thers, which is what happens in
humans.”
8
. What d the underlined wrds “this mystery ”refer t in paragraph 2?
A. Why dlphins live and play in grups.
B. Hw dlphins develp their unique sunds.
C. What aspects f intelligence dlphins pssess.

9
. Hw did the researchers carry ut their study f dlphins?
A. By analyzing mther dlphins’ sund features.
B. By recrding parent-child interactin frequency.
C. By measuring the distance between parent and child.
D. By examining the speech rgans f mther dlphins.
1
0. What is a suggested reasn why dlphin mthers use parentese with their yung?

If a stranger ffered yu a free ckie, yu might well eat it. But what if they ffered t als give yu $2? Yu
might plitely decline and walk away thinking. “Smething smells fishy.”
In a study published in Persnality and Scial Psychlgy Bulletin, researchers fund that peple tend t turn
dwn ffers f “free mney,” as well as unusually cheap services, because they seem “t gd t be true.”
In the initial experiment, nearly 40 percent f participants ate a ckie ffered freely— cmpared with abut 20
percent f thse ffered $2 as well. “Peple typically imagine things like smene did smething disgusting t the
ckie,” says study lead authr Andrew J. Vnasch, a psychlgical scientist at the University f Canterbury in
NewZealand.
Nine further experiments used nline questinnaires t present ther cases. These included being ffered mney
t accept a ride hme and surprisingly cheap flights. In each case, past a certain threshld (門(mén)檻), higher ptential
mney gain reduced participants’ likelihd f accepting the ffer.
Vnasch says the study illustrates that cntrary t the “standard ecnmic mdel,” which suppses humans
always seek t maximize gains, transactins (交易) need t als be understd as scial interactins between peple
trying t understand each ther’s minds.
If smene seems t vilate accepted nrms, such as self- interest, withut any explanatin, we assume they
have hidden mtives and infer there will be “phantm (幻影) csts”, imagined cnsequences that reduce what
Vnasch calls an ffer’s “psychlgical value”. Factrs beynd the present mment may cme int play.
“
Understanding that thers’ perceived vergenersity may put us in their debt culd als help explain peple’s
reluctance,” says Vnasch.
The researchers als shwed hw t make the effect less severe: simply prvide a reasn fr the deal. The “cheap
flights” experiment included a cnditin where the seats were revealed t be very uncmfrtable. “Uncmfrtable
seats aren’t typically a selling pint,” Vnasch says. “But telling peple the seats were uncmfrtable made them
mre willing t take them because it was sufficient explanatin.”
1
2. Why might peple reject an ffer f $2 alng with a free ckie?
A. They dislike a mney- related ffer.
B. They distrust the true value f the ffer.
C. They think the ffer is nt gd enugh.
D. They suspect the ffer nly lasts a shrt time.
1
3. What aspect f the nine further experiments is intrduced in Paragraph 4?
A. The mral cncerns.
B. The research methd.
C. The experiments’ duratin.
4. Why des the authr mentin the “cheap flights” experiment in the last paragraph?
A. T stress the unpredictability f human chices.
D. The participants’ backgrund.
1
B. T illustrate hw hidden mtives affect peple’s chices.
C. T emphasize the imprtance f prviding clear examples.
D. T shw giving sensible reasns can increase acceptance f ffers.
1
5. What can be a suitable title fr the text?
A. Are yu wrried abut “phantm csts”?
C. Why d yu accept ther’s genersity?
B. Are yu fearful f vilating scial nrms?
D. What is an ffer’s “psychlgical value”?
