Recently, I auditined(試鏡)fr my schl jazz band where I fell shrt. When the news brke, feelings f anger shk my mind and I kept myself alne s n ne wuld see me cry(at least fr an hur). Fr the next week, it weighed n me and I wuld becme sad at the mentin f it. Sn, I recvered, but it had been a week f disappintment.
Hwever, after calming myself dwn, what I've discvered is the value f hard wrk in preparing fr these tasks, nt because it increases yur chances f success, but rather because it leaves yu feeling satisfied regardless f the utcme. Yu will nt nly cme ut well-prepared but with pride fr the time yu've dedicated t it. Only with hard-earned pride can yu recgnize the true value f yur practice and when yu're able t d s, yur results becme secndary. Afterwards yu feel useful and intentinal emtins that are incredibly rewarding. If yu dn't put enugh wrk int preparing, yu may have unrealistic expectatins and be mre trubled if yu dn't succeed.
This is where my jazz band stry applies; I had inadequately prepared fr the auditin, cared a great deal abut its result and thus tk it prly when I didn't make it.
After realising this, when auditins(t the higher-level jazz band)were again annunced, I applied what I learned frm my previus mistake. Every day, I wuld practice the sheet music until I knew it s well that I n lnger cared abut the utcme. I develped pride nt nly fr the time I'd spent preparing but fr my instrument. Needless t say, when the day f the auditin came, it went a lt better than the first time.
Allw me t cnclude by saying that everything happens fr a reasn. Yes, failure is tugh. But, even if yu're feeling useless, angry, r disappinted, remember that regardless f the utcme, yur effrt has value and that in the end, yu wn't regret it.

Althugh humans dmesticated cats nearly 12,000 years ag, yur dear friend is still smewhat f a mystery. The idea that cats have night visin cntributes t the mystery.
D cats have night visin? Nt exactly. But they can see very well in lw light. Cats' large pupils, which are abut 50% larger than humans', allw mre light int their eyes. This extra light helps them t see in the dark. Peple's hmes are rarely in cmplete darkness—there's always a little light cming in frm smewhere. Cats actually aren't ncturnal(夜間活動的); they are creatures that hunt at dusk and dawn, the time f day when many ther animals t be hunted becme mre active.
Hw well d cats see in the dark? Much better than their pet parents. A human's rund pupils are n match fr their pupils. Observe yur cats: Their pupils will becme narrwer in the bright sunlight and then becme wider in the dark. A cat's visin is very pwerful because f the strategic shape and mvement f their eyes. They als see the wrld mstly in shades f gray, which is perfect fr lw light.
“A cat has the capacity t differentiate the intensity f light falling n its retina(視網(wǎng)膜)135times, cmpared t 10 times in a human, with a circular pupil,” Dr. Richard E. Gldstein, chief medical fficer at the Animal Medical Center in New Yrk City, tells The New Yrk Times. In ther wrds, their pupils give cats a big advantage ver the humans when it cmes t seeing in the dark because they're much mre effective at respnding t hw light enters their eyes.
But yu still have ne visual advantage ver yur friend: Humans have better clearness f visin than cats, reprts Business Insider. Yu can see mre clearly than yur little friend, but cats win when it cmes t night visin. With yur cmbined visual abilities, yu and yur cat make the perfect team.

30. Why d cats see better than humans in the dark?
A. Cats can brighten their eyes at night.
B. Cats are masters in reacting t incming light.
C. Pupils f cats are larger and mre adjustable t light.
D. Shape f cats' eyes helps them see gray better.
31. Hw des the authr explain the findings in paragraph 5?
A. By referring t experts' wrds.B. By making cmparisns.
C. By giving examples.D. By intrducing a cncept.

If yu're a frequent flyer, yu may have nticed that the wings f an aircraft have an additinal cmpnent at the ends. It lks like the tail f a fish. Sme ends are bent upwards, while sme thers are val in shape! These sectins f an aircraft wing are called winglets.
“A winglet is an additinal structural cmpnent f a wing structure with the primary functin f reducing wingtip vrtex(渦流)”. That's the kind f definitin that wuld make yur knees weak, but let's wrk thrugh this definitin in small steps. T understand the winglet, let's first understand why an aircraft needs it.
A significant surce f drag is actually caused by the high pressure under the wing, which causes air t flw up and ver the wingtip befre spinning ff(脫離)in a vrtex. Vrtex reduces fuel range and the speed f the aircraft, which may lk beautiful in the sky but may cause an aircraft t lse stability and even result in an emergency situatin.
T avid the frmatin f the vrtexes, tw slutins were explred as being pssible. One was t manufacture an infinitely(無限地)lng wing. There wuld be ttal separatin f the airflw frm the lwer and upper surface, therefre preventing any vrtexes frm being frmed. Obviusly, there were sme majr issues with this. The ther slutin was t create a separatin between the tw differential pressure regins by intrducing a structural cmpnent, which was called a “winglet”.
Since the 1980's, winglets have been a majr part f future aircraft designs. Fr sme ld aircrafts, winglets were fitted after the plane's intrductin int the market. Winglets are a prven way t reduce drag, save fuel, cut carbn dixide emissins, and reduce cmmunity nise. This helps the perating airlines save mney by decreasing the amunt f fuel cnsumed, as well as landing charges at airprts.
In ther wrds, if yu ever make a paper plane, be sure t bend the ends f the wing upwards just a little, and it will fly a bit further. It's nt cheating but it's just science!
32. What des the underlined part mean in the secnd paragraph?
A. Get ne t be cnfused.B. Make ne feel depressed.
C. Let ne experience fear.D. Help ne t keep delighted.
33. What is the prblem f the first slutin?
A. It is t cstly.B. It takes t much time.
C. It is unrealistic.D. It affects the envirnment.
34. What is the winglet intented t d?
A. Prevent vrtexes.B. Save fuel.
C. Increase speed.D. Reduce nise.
35. What is the text mainly abut?
A. The benefits f a winglet.
B. The means f aircraft security.
C. The reasns fr aircraft wingtips' upward bending.
D. The measures t make sure a plane flies further.

In a high schl in a small twn in Latin America, Class 3B was knwn fr its energetic students and lively discussins. Hwever, beneath the surface f laughter and friendship, pressures were increasing. The class was divided int tw grups: the athletes, led by Marc, a sccer player, and the artists, led by Sfia, a talented painter. Their cnflict had becme wrse ver the mnths, leading t the cnflicts that upset the harmny f the classrm.
The situatin reached a biling pint during a schl meeting when Marc and Sfia exchanged heated wrds ver a mural(壁畫)prject that the schl had planned. Marc believed that the athletes shuld have a mre imprtant rle in the prject, while Sfia argued that the artists deserved t lead the creative directin. Their argument quickly drew in their respective grups, and sn the classrm was filled with shuts and cmplaints.
Seeing the chas unfld, Mr. Ramirez, the head teacher, decided it was time t address the prblem. Knwn fr his calm manner and wisdm, he called fr an emergency meeting after schl. He gathered the students in the art rm, where the prject was t take place. The atmsphere was tense, with students crssing their arms and aviding eye cntact.

Mr. Ramirez listened attentively, ndding as each student viced their cncerns. After everyne had spken, he leaned frward, a thughtful expressin n his face. “What if we apprached this prject differently? Instead f seeing it as a cmpetitin, let's view it as a cperatin. C
根據(jù)第一段“The idea that cats have night visin cntributes t the mystery.” 故選A項(xiàng)。
根據(jù)第二段“Cats actually aren't ncturnal; they are creatures that hunt at dusk and dawn, the time f day when many ther animals t be hunted becme mre active.”
30. C 理解具體信息,根據(jù)文章第二段“which are abut…int their eyes”以及第三段“Their pupils…wider in the dark.”
根據(jù)第二段畫線詞后一句話“but let's wrk thrugh this definitin in small steps. T understand the winglet, let's first understand why an aircraft needs it.” 故選A項(xiàng)。
33. C 作出判斷推理,根據(jù)第四段“T avid the frmatin f the vrtexes, tw slutins were explred as being pssible. One was t manufacture an infinitely(無限地)lng wing. There wuld be ttal separatin f the
airflw frm the lwer and upper surface, therefre preventing any vrtexes frm being frmed.”
蘸髢?nèi)容針對“我”的改變,及最后一句“I became fierce and fcused n that ne gal.(我變得好勝起來并且專注于那個目標(biāo)。)” 故選A項(xiàng)。
