If yu have ever been disappinted because yu dn't have a gd gardener, the clever rbt may ne day becme the helper f yur indr plants.
The Hexa Plant is a six-legged rbt that has been specially made t care fr the ptted (盆栽的) plant that it carries n tp f its head. Using light and heat sensrs(傳感器), the rbt has the ability t carry its plant in and ut f the daylight. If the huseplant needs mre sun, the Hexa will walk int the sunlight; and if the huseplant is getting t ht, the Hexa will g back int the area that blcks direct light. The Hexa Plant will even d a little dance when it senses that the plant needs t be watered t warn its wner.
The rbt was develped by Vincrss engineer and funder Sun Tianqi after he saw a dead Sunflwer sitting in the darkness in a rm back in 2014. "Plants nly receive an actin withut respnding(回應):" Sun Tianqi wrte in a blg pst. "Whether they are being cut, bitten, burned r pulled frm the earth, r when they haven't received enugh sunshine, water, r are t ht r cld, they will hld still and take whatever is happening t them."
Accrding t Sun Tianqi, fr billins f years, plants have never experienced mvement f any kind, nt even the simplest mvement. In their whle lives, they stick t where they were brn. There have been il wrkers trapped ff the cast when sudden strms appeared. Field archaelgists have been stuck in seaside areas withut strm warnings. A few decades ag, a Texas Natinal Guard grup was trapped n the beach by rain-frced flding and had t ride ut a majr hurricane during a training exercise. There've been a few cases where travelers were trapped n an island r in a seaside area and unable t escape in time.
Escaping frm the strm-threatened areas is generally a chice fr mst f us - but nt fr all. Each year thusands f islanders acrss the Caribbean face the danger f hurricanes withut a public shelter t hide in. Mst ride ut the strm in their hmes.
But there are a few things yu can d t prepare yurself fr sme unexpected emergencies. Being prepared fr the unexpected may be yur best and nly defense. In the trpical rainfrest, there always exist battles, nes t claim the tree's dead bdy and the vast amunt f nutrients that it cntains. It's a battle that is fught thrughut the natural wrld, invlving a grup f rganisms that humans rarely ntice.
On the flr f a trpical rainfrest, it's dark, humid and ht, prviding ideal cnditins fr fungi (真菌). Humans nrmally think f fungi as things like this— mushrms f ne kind r anther. But these are just the fruiting bdies. They exist fr mst f the time hidden in the leaf litter and the earth as a netwrk f fine white threads.
The threads f cmpeting fungi envelp their victim's bdy, releasing enzymes (酶) which digest the tree's tissues and unlck the nutrients within. There are a millin r s different species f fungi in the trpics. Sme feed n dead plants. Others eat them alive. And sme reveal their existence in an eerily beautiful way. In Africa, in Cng, this is knwn as chimpanzee fire. The mysterius glw becmes brighter as the fungi digests the tree. When fungi have fed sufficiently, they develp their reprductive rgans.
Each can prduce literally billins f spres (孢子), the tiny particles that carry the species' genetic blueprint. Each spre like this has the ptential t kill a tree. The spres are s light that they can be carried by the slightest air currents. At least a billin flat abve every square meter f rainfrest.
Recently, it has been discvered that these spres d far mre than just bring death and decay. They are, in fact, at the very center f the rainfrest's life supprt system. High in the humid air, the spres cmbine with mlecules f water. Gradually, they cllect int drplets, which fall as rain when they are heavy enugh.
