Newspapers, advertisements, and labels surrund us everywhere, turning ur envirnment int a mass f texts
t be read r ignred. As the quantity f infrmatin we receive cntinually increases and as infrmatin spreading
is shifting frm page t screen, it may be time t ask hw changes in ur way f reading may affect ur mental life,
fr hw we receive infrmatin bears vitally n the ways we experience and interpret reality.
What is mst bvius in the evlutin f reading is the gradual displacement f the vertical (垂直的) by the
hrizntal — a shift frm intensive t extensive reading. In ur culture, access is nt a prblem, but prliferatin
(激增) is. And the reading act is necessarily different than it was in its earliest days. Awed by the availability f
texts, the reader tends t mve acrss surfaces withut allwing the wrds t resnate (共鳴) inwardly.
Interestingly, this shift frm vertical t hrizntal parallels the verall scietal shift frm bunded lifetimes
spent in single lcatin t lives lived in wider gegraphical areas in streams f data. This larger access was nce
regarded as wrldliness (世俗) — ne traveled, knew the life f cities, the ways f diverse peple…. It has nw
becme the birthright f anyne wh wns a televisin set.
Hw d we square the advantages and disadvantages f hrizntal and vertical awareness? The villagers, wh
knw everything abut their surrundings, are blessedly unaware f events in distant lands. The media-bsessed
urbanites, by cntrast, never lse their awareness f what happens in different parts f the wrld.
We may ask, which peple are happier? The villagers may have fund mre sense in things wing bth t the
limited range f their cncern and the depth n their infrmatin. But restricted cnditins and habit als suggest

bredm and limitatin. The lack f a larger perspective leads t suspiciusness and cautius cnservatism, but fr
the same reasn, the cnstant availability f data and macr-perspectives has its wn decreasing returns. When
everything is happening everywhere, it gets harder t care abut anything.
Hw d we assign value? Where d we find the fixed cntext that allws us t create a narrative f sense
abut ur lives? Ideally, I suppse, ne wuld have the best f bth wrlds — the purpseful fixity f the lcal, as
well as the availability f enhancing views: a natural eclgy f infrmatin and cntext.
28. What can we learn abut the first tw paragraphs?
A. Peple are tired f infrmatin prliferatin.
B. It’s difficult t shift frm vertical t hrizntal reading.
C. Where and hw we read texts shapes ur mental life.
D. Readers tday tend t ignre deep engagement with texts.
29. What’s the feature f hrizental scietal change?
A. Bunded lifetimes spent in single lcatin.
B. Lives lived in limited areas in streams f data.
C. Everyne has the right t wn a televisin set.
D. Each individual can knw abut events in distant lands.
30. Accrding t the passage, villagers _________.
A. are less bred than media-bsessed urbanites.
B. shw n interest in what happens in the wrld.
C. have a deeper understanding f their surrundings.
D. cannt adapt t changing situatins.
31. What can we learn frm the passage?
A. Vertical awareness allws us t care abut thers.
B. It’s wise t keep a balance between a lcal and a glbal view.
C. Changes in ur reading habits lead t the scietal shift.
D. Hrizntal reading affects ur mindset mre than vertical reading.

With the develpment f mdern technlgy, drnes are being applied t varius fields. Drne light shws are
becming especially ppular in the West. By nw, if yu live n the U. S. East r West Casts, yu’ve prbably
been trubled by wildfire smke. The fires are increasing in frequency and intensity as climate change wrsens.
第 7頁/共 18頁
And firewrks, as yu can guess frm their name, cause fires—mre than yu might think.
That’s what caused a handful f Califrnia twns t quit firewrks and turn t drnes last year. Sydney,

fire danger is nw tp f mind fr many U. S. cities as the Independence Day, r the American natinal day, nears.
In additin t reducing the risk f fires, drne light shws present a safer alternative fr the flks behind the
curtain. Firewrks injured mre than 10,000 peple last year because they can accidentally erupt while n the
grund. Drnes wn’t. And since light shws are required t keep the grund belw the shw clear, there’s n risk
f a drne falling frm the sky int the crwd.
Drnes are als less disturbing, creating nly a light buzzing nise. Firewrks, n the ther hand, can burst
yur eardrum if yu’re standing clse enugh. That’s a nuisance fr sme families with animals, small children, r
ther peple wh are sensitive t nise.
But perhaps the biggest reasn fr the switch t drnes is that they’re thught t be mre ec-friendly. Apart
frm starting fires, firewrk smke leaves behind a trail f harmful chemicals and is cnsidered a pllutant. Drnes
are als a reusable ptin, capable f flying ptentially hundreds f shws befre they even require maintenance.
That’s a huge benefit t the envirnment—and t the cmpanies paying t put n these perfrmances.
At the end f the day, thugh, sme cities are likely switching t drnes simply because they’re cler. That’s
nt t say that firewrks aren’t cl. But drnes allw fr mre creativity, with the ability t synchrnize(同步)
lights t music and recreate cmplex images in the sky.
Nevertheless, it’s still t early t rush t the cnclusin that drnes will cmpletely take the place f
firewrks in the near future.
32. What are the reasns why sme cities give up firewrks?
A They are t expensive. B. They are nt cl any mre.
C. They speed up climate change. D. They may pse fire risks.
33. What methd des the authr use t demnstrate the advantages f drnes in paragraph 3?
A. By referring t data frm previus studies.
B. By analyzing causes and effects.
C. By making a cmparisn.
D. By giving a definitin.
34. What des the underlined wrd “nuisance” in paragraph 4 prbably mean?
第 8頁/共 18頁
A. Reward. B. Attractin. C. Annyance. D. Instance.
35. What wuld the authr prbably discuss in the paragraph that fllws?
A. The similarities shared by drnes and firewrks.
B. The ptential challenges drnes will face.
C. The imprtance f drnes in prmting ecnmy.
D. The strng cmpetitin frm cmpanies in different industries.

waves became rlling. Despite the changing cnditins, we cntinued t enjy the sea until the playful waves
transfrmed int dangerus tides.
At that time, Sam and I fund urselves far frm the safety f the shre. Frightened and anxius, Sam and I
were fighting against the waves trying t get t the beach, but the mre we fught, the mre we were frced int
the cean. In a desperate attempt t get ut f the danger, we almst ran ut f ur energy.
Amidst ur struggle, a lifeguard’s rder came, “Dn’t fight the waves. Swim diagnally (對(duì)角線地).”
Fllwing the lifeguard’s instructins, changed ur curse, swimming diagnally rather than fighting the waves
head n.
