A new study has revealed that a prehistric sea cw was the target f tw different predatrs (捕食動(dòng)物)— an ancient crcdile and a tiger shark, prviding rare insights int the cmplex fd chains frm millins f years ag. The research, cnducted by an internatinal team f scientists and published in the Jurnal f Vertebrate Palentlgy, uncvers ne f the few knwn instances where a single prey (獵物) was attacked by many predatrs.
The sea cw, belnging t the extinct grup Culebratherium, was first attacked by a crcdile. Evidence then shws that after the initial attack, the sea cw’s remains were searched by a tiger shark, a tth f which was fund near the unlucky animal’s neck.
“Have yu seen the Batman mvie? There is a scene where he and Alfred are shting bullets t try and figure ut which specific type f bullet they are trying t find,” said Benites Palmin, lead authr f the research. “ Our research was cnducted in exactly the same way. We have these experiments in the wild where predatrs are attacking their prey, and then afterwards we try t cmpare which is the best scene fr what we’ re finding there.”
The find is particularly significant as it adds t the limited fssil recrd f multiple predatrs
interacting with a single prey. Such interactins are cmmn in tday’s ecsystems, but are rarely dcumented in the fssil recrd, making this discvery an imprtant piece f the puzzle in understanding ancient fd webs.
“We have been unsure as t which animals wuld have served this purpse as a fd surce fr multiple predatrs. Our previus research has identified sperm whales searched by several shark species, and this new research highlights the imprtance f sea cws within the fd chain,” Benites Palmin said in a statement.
The digging, directed by Marcel Sanchez- Villagra, head f the Palaentlgical Institute and Museum in Zurich, Switzerland, was bth challenging and rewarding. The site was initially discvered by a lcal farmer wh sptted unusual rcks, inspiring the team t investigate further and eventually unearth the sea cw fssils.

Engineer Kerstin G?pfrich builds machines. But rather than building metal devices, she makes tiny nes t wrk inside ur cells. G?pfrich leads a research grup fcusing n the “engineering f life” at the Max Planck Institute fr Medical Research in Heidelberg, Germany.
Our cells are already full f nature-made machines carrying ut the daily tasks f living.
Many are prteins. But smetimes ur natural prtein-machines dn’t wrk right. Brken bimachinery causes many diseases, S scientists are cnsidering hw they might fix faulty prteins. They might wire up artificial nerves t replace damaged nes.
And the ptential fr such devices ges beynd making repairs. Scientists are lking at hw t give cells new abilities, hping that by develping enugh nvel bimachines, they might make new frms f life. S if a prtein is faulty, why nt make a new ne in the lab?
Back when Frankie Rawsn was a student, he asked his teachers that. Nw a nantechnlgist at the University f Nttingham in England, Rawsn has answered his wn questin, “It turns ut that we’re nt very gd at artificially re-creating what bilgy des.”
Bilgists like Rawsn and G?pfrich fund a wrkarund. They’re creating nanmachines (納米級(jí)機(jī)器) that d the same jbs as prteins. With the right design, these nanmachines can d s easier at less cst. They als can be mre stable using fewer ingredients.
T build them, researchers wrk with many types f materials. Rawsn uses carbn nantubes. G?pfrich even uses bilgical mlecules, such as DNA. Rather than heal ld r damaged bdy parts, she’d replace them with new nes.
Scientists have learned t make small synthetic (合成的) bilgy fixes. Our cells must wrk tgether. “Think f them like the wiring f a huse,” Rawsn says. Flip a switch, and a light turns n. That’s a big-scale effect. But each small piece in the system must wrk prperly t get that end effect.
32. What des paragraph 2 intend t tell us?
A. The cst f repairing prteins.

C. The challenge f natural prtein-machines.
D. The backgrund f creating new bimachines.

A. T present scientists’ failure in bilgy. B. T cnvey his idea f life engineering.
C. T shw making prteins in the lab is hard. D. T explain why nantechnlgy is imprtant.
34. Which can best explain the underlined wrd “wrkgrund” in paragraph 5?
A. A new dilemma. B. A difficult cnditin.
C. An alternative slutin. D. An unbelievable stry.
35. What des the last paragraph mainly express?

Anther child brke the ice by yelling frm the tp f his lungs, “Batman never escapes!” It was his inspiring wrds that brught me back t reality, and I eventually gathered up my curage t d what Batman wuld d.
I ran int the party, and they were all clapping their hands fr me. Unaffected by my previus mve, the birthday by jumped fr jy and threw himself int my arms. I failed t cntain my feelings, excitement written all ver my face. It struck me that I was the nly ne bthered by me and my mustache. Feeling n tp f the wrld, I cracked a smile at these little angels and pened my muth, “Batman’s here! Wh wants t fight against bad guys with me?” “Me!” they replied in chrus, and a trace f jy can be nticed in their vices, fr which my lng-lst cnfidence fund its way back. Cape blwing in the wind, tears welling up in my eyes, I gt rid f insecurity and self-dubt lingering in my heart and reslved t stay psitive in the face f adversity.
