Recently, a study n hw a new virtual reality experience educated children abut the fire disasters was dne. The new VR experience was develped by the University f Suth Australia, hping t educate children t learn hw t be safe in a fire. It presents a situatin fr children aged 10-12. In this situatin, they are asked t lk after a friend's dg just befre a fire event begins. They take part in a set f prblem-slving activities t help save and prtect themselves and the dg.
The findings shwed that ver 80% f children culd calmly tell the advantages and disadvantages f different chices. They als learned t make wise decisins t prtect themselves frm a fire. Children thught it especially imprtant and meaningful, because 91% f them didn't have knwledge f fires at the beginning, and 67% had said that they were t yung t make safety decisins in a fire.
The researchers believed such VR experiences made it pssible t engage, educate and empwer the yung. “As children brn in mdern times, they are interested in such technlgy and they can experience events in a real situatin yet within the safe envirnment,” said Delene Weber, ne f the researchers.“Well-designed VR can prvide children with surprisingly valuable learning tls.” Meanwhile, because children have fewer life experiences, aren't as physically strng, and are less likely t have learned much abut fire safety, they' re ften mst at risk. Hwever, the rle that children play in the fire safety at their hmes shuld nt be underestimated (低估) . “Children dn't need t be always waiting fr help in disasters. With these VR experiences, we can make children understand the risks and realize they can help,” said Weber.

Sme wnderfully creative uses f X-rays have been in the wrld f art. But the mst impressive ne is t uncver what has been cvered up. Details unflded by an X-ray f a painting can't be seen any ther way. Fr example, in the past, paintings were ften repaired if small pieces f paint fell ff the canvas(帆布). These repairs cannt be seen just by lking at the painting. It takes an X-ray t discver where the repairs have been made.
An X-ray f a painting is ne f the best ways t tell if it was created by a famus painter r if it is a frgery (贗品). If there is a questin as t whether an ld master has painted a certain painting r nt,X-rays are made and cmpared t thse f paintings that are knwn t be riginal. If the brushstrkes (筆跡), fr example, are shwn t be ttally different than in ther wrk dne by a certain artist, then the painting is prved t be a fake cpy.
Since mdern paints are usually made frm different materials than paints f hundreds f years ag, the image they leave n an X-ray film lks different. This is anther way X-rays can be used t spt a frgery. A mdern artist will try t make a frgery lk hundreds f years ld by painting dirty varnish n it r by using artificial means t get the varnish t lk cracked. T the naked eye the frgery may lk ld, but when a careful study f the X-ray image is made, the deceptin is bvius.
It was cmmn many years ag fr an artist t finish a painting, decide it wasn't any gd, and paint a cmpletely different picture n tp f it. Or artists wuld paint ver thers’ wrk— it was their versin f recycling. Taking an X-ray is the nly way t find ut if there is a picture underneath the picture yu see with yur eyes. Smetimes museums will be mre interested in the painting beneath than the ne n tp, and will restre the lder ne by having the tp layer painstakingly remved.
( ) 9. Why d peple need X-rays t discver repairs n a painting?
A. Because the technlgy f X-ray is mre accurate.
B. Because they are much cheaper.
C. Because the law requires the painting t be tested by X-ray.
D. Because they are fast.
( ) 10. Accrding t the passage, X-rays are used t .
A. make repairs n paintings in the past B. identify the authenticity f an artwrk
C. change the materials f a frgery D. remve the recyclable paints
( ) 11. In Paragraph 3, the wrd “deceptin” prbably means “ ”.
A. cmparisn B. drawback C. trickery D. judgment
( ) 12. Which is the best title fr the passage?
A. X-ray Detectives B. Creative Uses f Technlgy
C. Frgery Studies D. X-ray Painting Technique

D. T tell a few secrets f scial media that he discvered.

This disappinted me. I d believe this student has the 22 t d well in cmputer science. Hwever, he may nt achieve anything great 23 he experiences failure first. On the ne hand, failure tells us t try harder. I' ll never frget hw disappinted an artist friend was when he was refused frm a master's degree prgram. He waited fr a year r tw and tried again. He finally succeeded. He knew hw 24 he was and wrked even harder. Sn his artwrk was s ppular. Later, The New Yrk Times 25 him.
On the ther hand, early success might be a setback (障礙) which we dn't realize. Screen-Free Day
I remember the first time I suggested screen-free days in ur schl t sme f ur student leaders. I played a jke in my grup and said, “What d yu think if we g a week withut using ur cmputers r smartphnes?”
They laughed, and ne f them said, “N way, Mr. White. That's impssible fr us!” I culd feel their wrry, and tld them that I was nly cnsidering the days withut“screens”. Even that idea left them feeling upset.
Accrding t a survey we did, mst students in ur schl spend abut six hurs a day n screens. Many f my students start their day by checking their smartphnes. I ften see them lking at their phnes when getting ff the bus r at parents' drp-ff because they can't use their wn“screens” at schl. They usually wrk n cmputers at schl fr at least tw hurs during the day.
It's clear that ur students spend a lt f time n screens. There's n dubt that we can see the advantages f technlgy. Hwever, we teachers als want t make sure that students have balanced learning and scial experiences away frm their screens. That's why we have cme up with the idea f screen-free days.
During the curse f the year, we have built in several screen-free days that require us t make different plans fr ur students abut hw they will cmmunicate with ne anther and the wrld arund them withut“screens”.
Fun activities, fr example, card games and rm escape games, are rganized at schl. In these activities, students make scial cmmunicatins withut smartphnes and have face-t-face cmmunicatin withut checking n“l(fā)ikes” they've gt nline. These fun activities als make it pssible fr the whle grade t enjy the cmpany f their friends with n smartphnes.
After ur first screen-free day, students mentined that they were surprised they enjyed it. It is imprtant t find ways t help ur students cnnect with ne anther. While technlgy is already part f ur wrld, it shuldn’t play such an imprtant rle in a learner's life.
41. Hw many hurs d mst students in the schl spend n screens every day?

42. Why have the teachers cme up with the idea f screen-free days?

43. What fun activities can the students have at schl?
