Many studies have shwn the learning-by-teaching effect. Students wh spend time teaching what they've learned shw better understanding and ability t remember knwledge than students wh simply spend the same time re-studying. But why des teaching help?
Researchers did a study t test their idea that teaching imprves ne's learning because it frces the teacher t retrieve (檢索) what they've learned, which leads t deeper and lnger-lasting acquisitin(獲得) f that infrmatin than spending mre time re-studying.
They asked 124 students t spend ten minutes studying a text. They tld the students they culd take ntes while studying, but wuld teach the material afterwards withut ntes. After studying the text, the students were divided int fur grups. In ne grup the students spent five minutes giving a lessn n the study material withut ntes. The ther grups either spent the same time answering the questins, teaching with a script (講稿) r writing dwn all they culd remember frm the text—a frm f recalling practice.A week later, all the students tk a surprise test f their knwledge and understanding f the text.
The imprtant finding is that the teaching-withut-ntes grup and the recalling-practice grup perfrmed better than the grup that answered the questins and the grup that taught with a script. The researchers said the result shws that the benefits f the learning-by-teaching methd are caused by recalling practice; that is, the learning-by-teaching methd wrks nly when the teaching includes recalling the taught materials.
The new findings have a practical suggestin fr hw the learning-by-teaching methd is used in educatin.
