Britain’s last cal-fired pwer plant will clse n Mnday, ending 142 years f cal-generated electricity in the natin that sparked the Industrial Revlutin.
The Ratcliffe-n-Sar statin in central England is t finish its final shift at midnight, after mre than half a century f turning cal int pwer. Owner Uniper says many f the 170 remaining emplyees will stay n during a tw-year decmmissining (停用關(guān)閉) prcess.
The UK gvernment hailed (贊揚) the clsure as a milestne in effrts t generate all f Britain’s energy frm renewable surces by 2030.The shutdwn makes Britain the first cuntry frm the Grup f Seven majr ecnmies t phase ut cal —thugh sme ther Eurpean natins, including Sweden and Belgium, gt there sner.
Energy Minister Michael Shanks said the plant’s clsure “marks the end f an era and cal wrkers can be rightly prud f their wrk pwering ur cuntry fr ver 140 years. We we generatins a debt f gratitude as a cuntry. The era f cal might be ending, but a new age f gd energy jbs fr ur cuntry is just beginning.”
The wrld’s first cal-fired electricity plant, Edisn Electric Light Statin, pened in Lndn in 1882. Ratcliffe-n-Sar, which pened in 1968, is a landmark whse eight cncrete cling twers and 199-meter chimney are seen by millins f peple a year as they drive past n the M1 highway r speed by n trains.
In 1990 cal prvided abut 80% f Britain’s electricity. By 2012 it had fallen t 39%, and by 2023 it std at just 1%, accrding t figures frm the Natinal Grid. Mre than half f Britain’s electricity nw cmes frm renewable surces such as wind and slar pwer, and the rest frm natural gas and nuclear energy.
“Ten years ag, cal was the leading surce f this cuntry’s pwer —generating a third f ur electricity,” said Dhara Vyas, deputy chief executive f Energy U. K. “S, t get t this pint just a decade later, with cal’s cntributin replaced by clean and lw carbn surces, is an incredible achievement. As we aim fr further ambitius targets in the energy transitin (轉(zhuǎn)變), it’s wrth remembering that few back then thught such a change at such a pace was pssible.”
28.What is the significance f the clsure f Ratcliffe-n-Sar statin?
A.It marks the beginning f Britain’s energy transitin.
B.It is the first step twards renewable energy in the UK.
C.It shws the end f cal-generated electricity in Britain.

Cral reefs (珊瑚礁) may be mre capable f adapting t htter and mre acidic (酸性的) ceans than we thught, raising hpes f preserving these bidiverse ecsystems.
Rising levels f carbn dixide in the atmsphere due t ur emissins pse a twin threat t the wrld’s cral reefs. Higher temperatures stress crals and this can lead t mass bleaching (漂白) and death. In additin, atmspheric CO2 absrbed by the cean makes the water mre acidic and weakens cral skeletns. This, alng with pllutin and verfishing, has already created a crisis fr the planet’s reefs.
T find ut mre abut the extent and speed at which cral species culd adapt, Jury and his clleagues at the University f Hawai’i cllected dzens f specimens f eight different cral species frm reefs arund O’ahu, Hawai’i. They were then grwn in an utdr lab under fur different cnditins: under tday’s climate, ne with temperatures raised by 2℃ but water chemistry unchanged, anther with temperatures held but water chemistry made mre acidic, and the last with bth temperature and water chemistry changed t prduce the warmer, mre acidic cnditins.
The test lasted as lng as six mnths, but “the crals did surprisingly well”, says Jury. All saw lwer grwth rates-a measure f cral health -under the mre stressful cnditins. Yet individuals f all species survived the cmbined stressrs, with n clear trade-ff between tlerance t heat and acidity.
In fact, there is building evidence f a significant ptential t adapt t changing ceans. Fr instance, in a secnd study published this mnth, Melissa Naugle at Suthern Crss University in Australia and her clleagues analysed heat tlerance f different cral species n the Great Barrier Reef. They fund unexpectedly large variatin in heat tlerance, even amng crals in the same part f the reef, which culd be especially valuable fr effrts t restre reefs by breeding mre tlerant crals.
“I’m cautiusly ptimistic,” says Lisa McManus at the University f Hawai’i, wh wasn’t invlved with any f the research. But she cautins that any adaptive ptential still depends n hw much cral is left after extreme events. “In a lt f areas arund the wrld, there’s little cral cver left.”
32.What is the effect f mre acidic ceans n cral reefs?
A.Mass bleachingB.Weakening skeletns.
C.Overfishing and pllutin.D.Higher temperatures and CO2.
33.Hw did Jury and his clleagues cnduct their study n crals?
A.By cllecting frm different ceans glbally.
B.By grwing under nly ne envirnmental cnditin.
C.By testing withut cnsidering cral species differences.
D.By cultivating in different cnditins with lcal cral species.
34.What can we learn frm Melissa Naugle’s study?
A.Sme species f crals may better help restre reefs.
B.Great Barrier Reef crals’ heat tlerance is equally high.
C.Envirnmental factrs slely decide Great Barrier Reef crals’ heat tlerance.
D.Heat-tlerance variatin amng Great Barrier Reef crals is t minr t matter.
35.What is the attitude f Lisa McManus twards the future f cral reefs?
A.Assured, expecting full adaptatin withut wrries.
B.Anxius, fearing the appraching lss f cral reefs.
C.Negative, questining the adaptability f cral reefs.
D.Hpeful, with cncerns abut pst-extreme event survival.

Amazn has reached what its funder and CEO Jeff Bezs called “an interesting milestne.” The retailing giant s highly assciated with bks and then music and vide, nw has tens f millins f prducts and a majrity are nn-media gds, frm drills t tennis balls t almst anything else that can be shipped.

S, what’s behind the success? 37 Bezs regularly leaves ne seat pen at meetings and infrms all attendees that they shuld cnsider that seat ccupied by their custmer, the mst imprtant persn in the rm.
Always trying t find ut what custmers want, Bezs is even stricter abut what custmers dn’t want. They hate delays, defects and ut-f-stck prducts, s the cmpany cnstantly lks t make them as rare as pssible. 38 Amazn’s data shws that a 0.1 secnd delay in page lading can translate int a ne percent drp in custmer activity.
But it desn’t fully explain the extrardinary success. Fr Bezs, a data driven custmer fcus encurages him t take risks t innvate. Amazns kindle, fr example, came int being because he believed millins wuld want an e-bk reader, dwnlading any bk within 60 secnds. 39 Engineers were free t slve technical challenges as they saw fit, nly needing t make it right fr cnsumers.
Efficiency —cheapness, in the eyes f Amazn’s critics —is als an imprtant part f the Amazn culture. 40 In 2009, Bezs declared that Amazn had begun fighting against waste. The mre he culd get rid f needless csts, the easier it wuld be t deliver rck-bttm prices t custmers.
A.In fact, Bezs links the tw.
B.That turning pint might be Bezs’ greatest achievement.
C.He set that target withut getting trapped by technical issues.
D.Even the tiniest delay in lading a webpage isn’t insignificant.

F.Bezs culd have dne it earlier, but he tk ver twenty years t cmplete that target.
G.Amazn managers wuld tell yu: the empty chair, the internal nickname f the figure that rules their lives.

36.根據(jù)前文“The retailing giant s highly assciated with bks and then music and vide, nw has tens f millins f prducts and a majrity are nn-media gds, frm drills t tennis balls t almst anything else that can be shipped.”“That turning pint”指代了第一段中提到的“亞馬遜從主要銷售書籍、音樂和視頻為主和其他媒體商品轉(zhuǎn)變?yōu)閾碛袛?shù)千萬種產(chǎn)品的零售商。”
B.That turning pint might be Bezs’ greatest achievement.“這個轉(zhuǎn)折點可能是貝佐斯最大的成就”符合語境,故選B。
37.根據(jù)空后“Bezs regularly leaves ne seat pen at meetings and infrms all attendees that they shuld cnsider that seat ccupied by their custmer—the mst imprtant persn in the rm.” G. 39.根據(jù)空后“Engineers were free t slve technical challenges as they saw fit, nly needing t make it right fr cnsumers.” C.He set that target withut getting trapped by technical issues. “他沒有被技術(shù)問題所困擾就設(shè)定了目標”符合語境,故選C。
40.根據(jù)空前“Efficiency—cheapness,in the eyes f Amazn’s critics—is als an imprtant part f the Amazn culture.” 空后“The mre he culd get rid f needless csts, the easier it wuld be t deliver rck-bttm prices t custmers.” A.In fact,Bezs links the tw. “事實上,貝佐斯將這兩者聯(lián)系在一起”能夠很好地承接前后文,并強調(diào)貝佐斯的經(jīng)營理念。符合語境,故選A。
