Back in 1964, in his bk Games Peple Play, psychiatrist Eric Berne described a pattern f cnversatin he called “Why Dn’t Yu — Yes But”, which remains ne f the mst annying aspects f everyday scial life. The persn adpting the strategy is usually a chrnic cmplainer. Smething is terrible abut their relatinship, jb, r ther situatin, and they cmplain abut it endlessly, but find sme excuse t dismiss any slutin that’s prpsed. The reasn, f curse, is that n sme level they dn’t want a slutin; they want t be validated (認(rèn)可) in their psitin that the wrld is ut t get them. If they can “win” the game — dismissing every suggestin until interlcutr (對(duì)話者) gives up in annyance — they get t feel pleasurably righteus (正當(dāng)?shù)? in their anger and excused frm any bligatin t change.
Part f the truble here is the s-called respnsibility/fault fallacy (謬誤). When yu’re feeling hard dne by — taken fr granted by yur partner, say, r bliged t wrk fr a stupid bss — it’s easy t becme attached t the psitin that it’s nt yur jb t address the matter, and that ding s wuld be an admissin f fault. But there’s a cnfusin here. Fr example, if I were t discver a newbrn at my frnt dr, it wuldn’t be my fault, but it mst certainly wuld be my respnsibility. There wuld be chices t make, and n pssibility f aviding them, since trying t ignre the matter wuld be a chice. The pint is that what ges fr the baby n the drstep is true in all cases: even if the ther persn is 100% in the wrng, there’s nthing t be gained, lng-term, frm using this as a justificatin t evade respnsibility.
Shuld yu find yurself n the receiving end f this kind f cmplaining, there’s a clever way t shut it dwn — which is t agree with it. Psychtherapist Lri Gttlieb describes this as “ver-validatin”. Fr ne thing, yu’ll be spared further cmplaining, since the ther persn’s mtivatin was t cnfirm her beliefs, and nw yu’re cnfirming them. But fr anther, as Gttlieb ntes, peple cnfrnted with ver-validatin ften hear their cmplaints afresh and start arguing back. The cncept that they’re utterly pwerless suddenly seems unrealistic, nt t mentin rather annying — s they’re prmpted instead t generate ideas abut hw they might change things.
“And then, smetimes, smething magical might happen, ” Gtlieb writes. The ther persn “might realize she’s nt as trapped as yu are saying she is, r as she feels. ” Aviding respnsibility feels cmfrtable, but turns ut t be a prisn; whereas assuming respnsibility feels unpleasant, but ends up being freeing.
32. What is the characteristic f a chrnic cmplainer, accrding t Eric Berne?
A. They are angry abut their ill treatment and feel bitter twards whever tries t help.
B. They are habitually unhappy and endlessly find fault with peple arund them.
C. They cnstantly dismiss thers’ prpsals while taking n respnsibility fr dealing with the prblem.
D. They lack the basic skills required fr successful cnversatins with thers.
33. What des the authr try t illustrate with the example f the newbrn n ne’s drstep?
A. Peple tend t think that ne shuld nt be held respnsible fr thers’ mistakes.
B. It is easy t becme attached t the psitin f verlking ne’s wn fault.
C. Peple are ften at a lss when cnfrnted with a number f chices.
D. A distinctin shuld be drawn between respnsibility and fault.
34. What des the authr advise peple t d t chrnic cmplainers?
A. Stp them frm ging further by agreeing with them.
B. Listen t their cmplaints attentively and sympathetically.
C. Ask them t validate their beliefs with further evidence.
D. Persuade them t clarify the cnfusin they caused.
35. Which f the fllwing is the best title fr the passage?
A. What is the respnsibility/fault fallacy fr chrnic cmplainers?
B. Hw can yu avid dangerus traps in everyday scial life?
C. Wh are chrnic cmplainers and hw t deal with them?
D. Why shuld we stp being a chrnic cmplainer and assume respnsibility?

Aplgizing is hw we live in peace with thers, yet few f us knw hw t d it well — and nt defensively. Just as ften, aplgies dn’t happen at all ut f fear that they’ll be uncmfrtable r ineffective. ____36____ They help slidify(使變穩(wěn)固) relatinships and mend trust, bth f which can lwer stress and imprve mental health. If yu’re ready fr yur fault, here are fur key s t aplgizing well.
1. ____37____
Aplgies are better late than early, says Cindy Hantz, a scial psychlgist wh has researched hw timing influences aplgy effectiveness. “What we fund is that peple usually tend t ffer an aplgy as sn as pssible,” she says. “It’s an effrt t shut the whle incident dwn. Yu can’t deliver an effective aplgy until the injured persn believes that yu fully understand what yu did wrng. If the aplgy cmes befre that, it’s nt ging t be seen as sincere.”
2. Accept respnsibility.
Why shuld yu aplgize if yu’re bth at fault? ____38____ “But I like t encurage peple t really fcus n taking respnsibility fr the parts f the cnflict that they’re respnsible fr.” Schumann says. Calling attentin t the fact that we’re als hurt is nrmal, but save it fr later n in the cnversatin.
3. Be clear abut hw yu plan t repair things.
One f the cre elements f an aplgy is making reparatins. That will be pssible in a direct way: Yu brke their favrite wineglass? Buy them a new ne. Spilled cffee n their new dress? Pay fr the dry cleaning. ____39____ It’s imprtant fr the ther persn t hear that this is nt ging t cntinue... and they can trust yu t imprve yur behavir in the future.
4. Dn’t expect frgiveness.
An aplgy is a starting pint. Particularly with severe faults, the persn wrnged will ften need time and space t heal. Schumann suggests saying like this: “I understand this isn’t ging t fix everything, and I want t cntinue t d whatever I can t make up fr my mistake. I hpe that even if yu’re nt ready t frgive me, ____40____ ”
A. Dn’t rush int it.
B. Start with specific wrds.
C. it’s imprtant nt t pressure them.
D. That’s exactly the prblem many peple struggle with.
E. yu’re pen t wrking with me t get us t a pint where we can mve frward.
F. Smetimes yu can’t repair what’s happened, but yu can think abut the relatinship mving frward.
G. But sincere aplgies bring a hst f benefits t the persn delivering the message and the ne receiving it.
