Researchers say the plymetallic ndules (多金屬結(jié)核) that mining cmpanies hpe t harvest frm the deep- cean seaflr may be a surce f xygen fr the animals, plants and bacteria living there. This discvery f this “dark xygen” has the ptential t rck negtiatins happening this mnth in Jamaica, where a wrld rule-making bdy - the Internatinal Seabed Authrity - is meeting t decide the future f deep-sea mining.
“This study is a really gd example f hw limited ur knwledge f the deep cean currently is, and hw much mre we still stand t benefit with further scientific research,” said Diva Amn, a marine bilgist frm Trinidad.
The excitement is fcused n the ptat-sized rcks - r plymetallic ndules - fund littered acrss areas f the cean flr. These ndules cntain minerals, such as cbalt and nickel that green-energy batteries and technlgies require.
Fr years, cmpanies such as Canada’s The Metals C. have been wrking t persuade the internatinal gverning authrity t greenlight their plans t harvest these metallic ndules in the Pacific Ocean’s Clarin Clipper Zne - a stretch f sea that spans 4,500 miles between Hawaii and Mexic. The cmpany has argued that the metals are essential fr building technlgies that dn’t rely n fssil fuels. They say the impact mining will have n the cean flr is nt nly minimal, but als desn’t cmpare with the destructin f rainfrests and human cmmunities that mining n land causes.
But envirnmentalists, ceangraphers and thers say that driving large harvesting machines acrss the undevelped and little- knwn cean flr - atp and alng areas f sediment (沉積物) three and fur miles belw the surface - culd have unfreseen and disastrus cnsequences. They are urging lawmakers t ban the industry frm digging up ne f the last “untuched” ecsystems n the planet.
This new research suggests the tll f mining the area culd be greater than anyne had imagined. That’s because a team f internatinal scientists fund that the prized ndules prduce xygen and may be respnsible fr enriching this dark, remte ecsystem with ne f life’s mst imprtant elements.
8. What can be knwn abut the plymetallic ndules in the deep cean?
A. They are being widely used at present.B. Their reliance n green energy is heavy.
C. They threaten surrunding living species.D. Their ability t prduce xygen is surprising.
9. Why des The Metals C. talk abut the impact f mining n the cean flr?
A. T advcate cean prtectin.B. T criticize a gverning authrity.
C. T have its plans carried ut.D. T recmmend perfect mining ways.
10. What d the envirnmentalists expect t see accrding t the text?
A. Lawmakers’ lse plicies n industries.B. Declaring mining deep-cean ndules illegal.
C. Researchers’ further explratin f the sea.D. Emplying plymetallic ndules efficiently.
11. Which f the fllwing can replace the underlined wrd “tll” in the last paragraph?
A. Technical barrier.B. Previus ambitin.
C. Ptential investment.D. Serius cnsequence.

T get ur pints acrss, we humans use numerus gestures(手勢), shift the speed and tne f ur speech and take turns in cnversatin. We aren’t the nly members f the animal kingdm t d this. Accrding t new bservatins frm a study published in the jurnal Current Bilgy, chimpanzees may share ur pattern f rapidly taking turns t “speak” and, smetimes, even interrupting each ther.
“While human languages are incredibly diverse, a characteristic we all share is that ur cnversatins are structured with fast- paced turns f just 200 millisecnds n average,” study c- authr and University f St Andrews primatlgist(靈長類動物學(xué)家) Catherine Hbaiter said in a statement. “But it was an pen questin whether ther animals share this cnversatinal structure.”
In the study, the research team cllected data n chimpanzee “cnversatins” acrss five wild cmmunities in East Africa. Their dataset represented mre than 8,500 gestures fr 252 individual chimpanzees. They then used cmputer sftware t measure the timing f turn- taking cnversatinal patterns. 14% f cmmunicative interactins included an exchange f gestures between tw individual interactins. Mst f these included a tw- part exchange, but sme included up t seven. “We fund that the timing f chimpanzees’ gesturing and human cnversatinal turn- taking is similar and very fast, which suggests that similar evlutinary mechanisms(進化機制) are driving these scial, cmmunicative interactins,” study c- authr and University f St Andrews Ph. D student Gal Badihi said.
In general, the researchers saw a similar timing bserved in human cnversatin— shrt pauses between a gesture and then a gestural respnse at abut 120 millisecnds. Sme f the behaviral respnses t gestures were slwer. “We did see a little variatin amng different chimp cmmunities, which again matches what we see in peple— there are slight cultural variatins in the pace f cnversatin; sme cultures have slwer r faster talkers,” Badihi said.
This cnnectin between human and chimpanzee face- t- face cmmunicatin indicates that there are sme hidden rules in cmmunicatin in primates. The team ntes that these structures culd date back t a cmmunicatin mechanism in a shared ancestr. Chimpanzees and humans als may have arrived at similar cmmunicatin strategies as a way t enhance their interactins and manage cmpetitin fr cmmunicative “space”.
12. What was uncertain fr Catherine Hbaiter befre the study?
A. Whether gestures were used by animals.
B. Whether human talks feature fast- paced turns.
C. Whether ther animal species culd cmmunicate.
D. Whether human cnversatinal turn- taking was unique.
13. Hw did the researchers cnduct their experiment?
A. By rescheduling chimps’ rutine life.B. By cmparing chimps’ sund vlume.
C. By analyzing chimps’ gestural interactins.D. By changing chimps’ living envirnment.
14. What des the study suggest abut chimpanzees?
A. Cmmunities may differ in cnversatinal paces.
B. Their behaviral respnses t gestures remain slw.
C. Cultural variatins in cmmunicatin are unbservable.
D. Their cmmunicatin strategies are better than humans’.
15. What is the main idea f the text?
A. Chimps use gestures fr cmmunicatin.
B. Chimps share a cmmn ancestr with humans.
C. Turn- taking cnversatinal patterns are widespread.
D. Chimps and humans have similarities in cmmunicatin.
