In the last tw years tennis has taken ver ur clsets, ur screens and nw-ur living rms.
At least that is the hpe f Belgian ec-designer Mathilde Wittck, wh fashins furniture frm thrwn tennis balls. Wittck’s chaise lngues (躺椅) are entirely cushinless-save fr the filling f 500 precisely arranged tennis balls. Her ne-meter-lng benches are similarly few and far between, with sme 270 balls being bth stylish and structurally substantial.
Arund 300 millin tennis balls are prduced each year-and almst all f them end up in landfills, taking ver 400 years t decmpse (分解). Wittck estimates the lifecycle f a ball stands at just nine games, depending n the level f tennis being played.
It takes Wittck arund three t fur weeks t build a chair. Every ball is cut and dyed by hand, with clrs picked ut especially t fit the client's space. It was thrugh much trial and errr that she was able t use the shape f the ball while masking sme f its all-t-easily-recgnized features. “I needed t find an assembly that changed the icnic appearance f the tennis balls,” she said. “It’s yellw and has these white lines. Hw d I deal with them?”
Wittck started t see the design’s pssibilities f the sprting equipment when she was studying at Central Saint Martins, an art schl in Lndn. Tday, she receives all her materials via dnatins frm tennis clubs. Cllectins began small-smetimes with just 10tssed balls at a time-but quickly grew. Nw, Wittck wrks with the Federatin f Wallnia in Brussels, wh have ffered her their entire stck-arund 100,000. Hw lng will it last? “It’s enugh fr a few mnths,” she said. “If things get wild, maybe it will last nine mnths. Because I have a rhythm f cutting tennis balls. I can get thrugh 1,800 per week.”

Yur phne has a screen that displays images and vides. The screen uses tiny dts knwn as pixels (像素) that cnsist f three primary clrs: red, green and blue. By mixing these clrs in different ways, yur phne can shw yu everything frm beautiful beach scenes t cute puppies.
Nw imagine smething similar fr smells. Scientists are develping digital scent technlgy that uses a small number f different cartridges (暗盒), each cntaining a specific scent. Just like hw pixels mix the three basic clrs t create images, these scent cartridges culd mix t create different smells. Just as images n yur phne are made f digital cdes that represent cmbinatins f pixels, smells prduced by a future phne culd be created thrugh digital cdes. Each smell culd have a specific recipe made up f different amunts f the ingredients in the cartridges.
When yu receive a digital scent cde, yur phne culd mix tiny amunts f the different scents frm the cartridges t create the desired smell. This mix wuld then be released thrugh a small vent n the phne, allwing yu t smell it. With just a few cartridges, yur phne culd ptentially create a huge variety f smells, much like hw red, green and blue pixels can create cuntless clrs.
Creating a phne that can prduce smells invlves several challenges. One is designing a system that can prduce thusands f different smells using nly a few cartridges. Anther is hw t cntrl hw strng a scent shuld be and hw lng a phne shuld send it ut. And phnes will als need t sense drs near them and cnvert thse t digital cdes s yur friends’ phnes can send smells t yu. The cartridges shuld als be easy t refill, and the chemicals in them shuld be safe t breathe. These hurdles make it a tricky but exciting area f research.

In recent years the prductin f blades(葉片) fr wind turbines(風(fēng)力渦輪機(jī))has undergne a revlutin, as it were. As turbine utput is related t the square f blade length, this has als increased hw much pwer can be prduced.
But there's a hitch. Tday's lngest blades have becme t big t be delivered t inland wind farms. They can be taken nly by ship t ffshre sites, where building csts are far higher.
Lgistics specialists have cnsequently been raising their game. Trucks with “blade-lifter” hydraulics(液壓裝置)can turn their lad t reduce displacement n turns, a useful trick in hilly places withut verhead bstacles. The past decade has als seen the develpment f highly accurate “swept path analysis” sftware. Fed with a digital mdel f a transprt passage, tree branches included, the sftware reveals-t within a few centimetres-if a blade culd get thrugh.
Fr all that, prblems still arise. During the many mnths it can take t secure transprt permits, trees grw and new bstacles are ften created. Prducing the blades n site has s far prved impractical. In additin t intrducing ptential failure pints, the jints are expensive and heavy. They als reduce wind-harnessing surface area by abut 15%. One idea is t 3D-print blades at wind farms. A Silicn Valley firm has $ 1. 3m in funding. If all ges well, the cmpany hpes t prduce a 50-metre blade in late 2025. 3D-printed blades f 100metres culd fllw by 2028. The bss f the firm estimates n-site printing wuld cut develpers' ttal cst fr blades by a quarter.
The wind pwer industry spends an astnishing 7% r s f its capital expenditures n mving blades. Even expensive, lng-sht attempts t find a better way, then, culd prve wrth the effrt.
12. What des the underlined wrd “hitch” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Advantage.B. Imprvement.C. Challenge.D. Disrder.
13. Hw were the wind turbines transprted in the past?

B. By applying sftware t the big trees detectin.
C. By reducing the lad f the trucks t make turns.
D. By using trucks with special devices t decrease the mvement f turbines.
14. What is the suggestin abut addressing the transprtatin f turbine blades?
A. Printing the blades n-site at wind farms.B. Reducing the length f the turbine blades.
C. Increasing the number f transprt permits.D. Using lighter materials t prduce the blades.
15. What is the authr’s attitude twards the effrts t imprve the transprtatin f blades?
A. Cautius.B. Supprtive.C. Ambiguus.D. Dubtful.

It was the beginning f a new year, and as the “smarty-pants” f my peers, I was placed in the best class, where mst f the chatterbxes were. Sadly, I was nt ne f them. Mst f the time, my muth was zipped very tightly and I hardly had any friends wh appreciated my silence. T make matters wrse, I was shrt and very shy, which made me think all my cnfident classmates wuld tease me and lk dwn n me. During lessns, I thught teachers almst frgt my existence, and if nt fr my exceptinally excellent results, n ne wuld have nticed me.
Thus, the incident that happened three mnths ag was bth shcking and surprising. There was a speech cmpetitin three mnths later, and ur schl was t chse a representative frm the best class f ur level. The selectin was left t ur strict English teacher, Mrs Lee, whm I feared the mst because she hardly ever smiled at us. Due t her high expectatins, all f us presumed she wuld pick ne f the biggest muths in ur class. Strangely thugh, she declared, “Jane shall be the ne wh will jin in the cmpetitin.”
There was silence in ur usually-nisy class. My jaw drpped as I drew a deep breath awkwardly. Me? A speech cmpetitin? I rubbed my eyes t ensure I was nt dreaming.
“Yu have t write a speech tday and shw it t me tmrrw, Jane,” Mrs Lee instructed, thereby breaking the ice. The next day, I shwed my speech t Mrs Lee. Reading it, she ndded in satisfactin and smiled at me fr the first time. In the sweetest vice I had ever heard, she praised me, “Wnderful wrk! Why dn’t yu read it t the class?”
Swallwing hard and taking a deep breath, I began reciting my essay with the wrst prnunciatin anyne had ever heard. The entire class burst int laughter as they shuted discuraging wrds, saying that they shuld have been in my place instead. Ht tears stung my eyes as I rushed back t my seat, weeping silently in embarrassment, while Mrs Lee criticized the class fr such rude behaviur.
