My first newsrm was in a grand building with tall arched windws that dminated a street crner in the small Midwestern city where I wrked. Inside, there was a high ceiling. “Did this used t be a bank?” many visitrs wuld ask. But it had in fact, always been a newsrm.
I was yung and shy when I first went t wrk there, and it prbably tk me a mnth befre I talked t any f the ther reprters. But eventually, they became my best friends, the cre f my scial life.
My secnd newsrm was the airy tp flr f a histric building in the state capital f Maryland. It was smaller and less grand but far mre energizing. My clleagues were lder. I learned s much abut hw t be a reprter frm verhearing their phne interviews.
This past summer, several American newspapers annunced they wuld be clsing their newsrms. Many lcal newspapers have gne ut f business in recent years, victims f declining circulatin and shrinking advertising dllars. Then alng came the crnavirus pandemic, and s many f us were sent hme t wrk frm there. The pleasant surprise is that we have all succeeded brilliantly in wrking remtely. But sme managers have lked at this success and thught: “Why wuld we need t return t the newsrm?”
I wrry that they are making a big mistake. A physical newsrm sends a pwerful message t a cmmunity: “We are here fr yu.” At my first jb, strangers culd walk right thrugh the dr and straight up t my desk. We treasured that visibility.
But I als think abut the cllabratin (合作) — f the times I wuld verhear clleagues talking abut a stry and realize that I had sme useful infrmatin fr them. Smetimes a clleague wuld see me in the hall and give me a stry idea. I can’t wait t get back t my newsrm.

As Internet users becme mre dependent n the Internet t stre infrmatin, are peple remembering less? If yu knw yur cmputer will save infrmatin, why stre it in yur wn persnal memry, yur brain? Experts are wndering if the Internet is changing what we remember and hw.
In a recent study, Prfessr Betsy Sparrw cnducted sme experiments. She and her research team wanted t knw the Internet is changing memry. In the first experiment, they gave peple 40 unimprtant facts t type int a cmputer. The first grup f peple understd that the cmputer wuld save the infrmatin. The secnd grup understd that the cmputer wuld nt save it. Later, the secnd grup remembered the infrmatin better. Peple in the first grup knew they culd find the infrmatin again, s they did nt try t remember it.
In anther experiment, the researchers gave peple facts t remember, and tld them where t find the infrmatin n the Internet. The infrmatin was in a specific cmputer flder (文件夾). Surprisingly, peple later remember the flder lcatin better than the facts. When peple use the Internet, they d nt remember the infrmatin. Rather, they remember hw t find it. This is called “transactive memry (交互記憶).”
Accrding t Sparrw, we are nt becming peple with pr memries as a result f the Internet. Instead, cmputer users are develping strnger transactive memries; that is, peple are learning hw t rganize huge quantities f infrmatin s that they are able t access it at a later date. This desn’t mean we are becming either mre r less intelligent, but there is n dubt that the way we use memry is changing.
28. Why des the passage begin with tw questins?
A. T intrduce the main tpic.B. T shw the authr’s attitude.
C. T describe hw t use the Internet.D. T explain hw t stre infrmatin.
29. What can we learn abut the first experiment?
A. Sparrw’s team typed the infrmatin int a cmputer.
B. The tw grups remembered the infrmatin equally well.
C. The first grup did nt try t remember the infrmatin.
D. The secnd grup did nt understand the infrmatin.
30. In transactive memry, peple ______.
A. keep the infrmatin in mindB. change the quantity f infrmatin
C. rganize infrmatin like a cmputerD. remember hw t find the infrmatin
31. What is the effect f the Internet accrding t Sparrw’s research?
A. We are using memry differently.
B. We are becming mre intelligent.
C. We have prer memries than befre.
D. We need a better way t access infrmatin.

Last summer, tw nineteenth-century cttages were rescued frm remte farm fields in Mntana, t be mved t an Art Dec building in San Francisc. The huses were made f wd. These cttages nce hused early settlers as they wrked the dry Mntana sil; nw they hld Twitter engineers.
The cttages culd be an example f the industry’s dd lve fr “l(fā)w technlgy”, a cncept assciated with the natural wrld, and with ld-schl craftsmanship that exists lng befre the Internet era. Lw technlgy is nt virtual — s, t take advantage f it, Internet cmpanies have had t get creative. The rescued wd cttages, fitted by hand in the late eighteen-hundreds, are an bvius example, but Twitter’s designs lie n the extreme end. Other cmpanies are using a brader interpretatin f lw technlgy that fcuses n nature.
Amazn is building three glass spheres filled with trees, s that emplyees can “wrk and scialize in a mre natural, park-like setting.” At Ggle’s ffice, an entire flr is carpeted in grass. Facebk’s secnd Menl Park campus will have a rftp park with a walking path.
Olle Lundberg, the funder f Lundberg Design, has wrked with many tech cmpanies ver the years. “We have lst the cnnectins t the maker in ur lives, and ur tech engineers are the nes wh feel impverished (貧乏的), because they’re surrunded by the digital wrld,” he says. “They’re lking fr a way t regain their individual identity, and we’ve fund that intrducing real crafts is ne way t d that.”
This craft-based thery is rted in histry. William Mrris, the English artist and writer, turned back t pre-industrial arts in the eighteen-sixties, just after Industrial Revlutin. The Arts and Crafts mvement defined itself against machines. “Withut creative human ccupatin, peple became discnnected frm life,” Mrris said.
Research has shwn that natural envirnments can restre ur mental abilities. In Japan, patients are encuraged t “frest-bathe”, taking walks thrugh wds t lwer their bld pressure.
These health benefits apply t the wrkplace as well. Rachel Kaplvin, a prfessr f envirnmental psychlgy, has spent years researching the restrative effects f natural envirnments. Her research fund that wrkers with access t nature at the ffice — even simple views f trees and flwers — felt their jbs were less stressful and mre satisfying. If lw-tech ffices can ptentially nurish the brains and imprve the mental health f emplyees then, fine, bring n the cttages.
32. Why did the writer mentin the tw nineteenth-century cttages?
A. T shw that Twitter is having a hard time.
B. T shw that ld cttages are in need f prtectin.
C. T shw that early settlers nce suffered frm a dry climate in Mntana.
D. T shw that Internet cmpanies have rediscvered the benefits f lw technlgy.
33. Lw technlgy is regarded as smething that _____.
A. is related t natureB. is ut f date tday
C. cnsumes t much energyD. exists in the virtual wrld
34. What’s the main idea f Paragraph 5?
A. Human beings have destryed many pre-industrial arts.
B. Human beings have a traditin f valuing arts and crafts.
C. Human beings can becme intelligent by learning histry.
D. Human beings can regain their individual identity by using machines.
35. What can be the best title fr the passage?
A. Past Glries, Future Dreams
B. The Virtual Wrld, the Real Challenge
C. High-tech Cmpanies, Lw-tech Offices
D. The Mre Craftsmanship, the Less Creativity
