My Mther’s Diamnd
It was a beautiful August day, just weeks befre schl restarted. My mther, my brther and I were sitting in ur frnt yard, enjying the afternn shade f the big tree. My father, Carl, was als at hme, wrking in his basement ffice. As we lazed utside, we watched as tw girls came twards us n ur side f the street; ne riding a bicycle and ne hlding nt the back f it as she rller-skated behind.
Just as they passed by, the skater lst her balance and went dwn n the street, right in frnt f ur neighbr’s huse. My mther jumped up quickly and ran tward them t help the fallen skater, and my mther’s ft caught n an uneven sectin f the sidewalk. Dwn she went, injuring her knees, her palms and her chin. We came running up t her and my brther went t ask my father fr help. Meanwhile, I was checking n the skater, wh was kay.
The tw girls cntinued n their way, and my mther lay there n the sidewalk, bleeding. My father came running, and he carried my mther int the huse. He set her dwn n a kitchen chair and gt busy cleaning her wunds with a wet washclth. As they washed the wunds, my mther lked at her wedding ring n her finger, nly t find the diamnd was gne.
My brther and I ran utside t lk fr the missing diamnd. The place she fell n the sidewalk was cvered with small rcks. We had n luck. My mther went ut and searched as well, n her painful hands and knees. Many peple spent many hurs searching the area ver the next several days, all in vain. My mther’s wedding ring, althugh nt fancy, was priceless t her.
Several mnths passed. Our neighbr, Mike, was a gd friend and had a business buying and reselling cars. We bught several cars frm him ver the years because he was s gd at it. He liked wearing wrk bts and his bts were always muddy wherever he went.

I was a vet in Yrkshire. One day I received a call frm Mrs Tmpkin asking me t cut the beak (喙) f her budgie (虎皮鸚鵡). I armed myself with a pair f clippers and stepped nt the narrw strip f pavement which separated the dr frm the rad. A pleasant-lking red-haired wman answered my knck.

“Yes, I understand, Mrs Tmpkin.” I lked at the cage by the windw with the green budgie perched (棲息) inside. “These little birds can be wnderful cmpany when they start chattering.”
She laughed, “Yes, but it’s a funny thing. Peter never has said that much. I think he’s lazy! But I just like having him with me.”
“Of curse yu d,” I said, “but he certainly needs attentin nw.”
The beak was greatly vergrwn, curving away dwn till it tuched the feathers f the breast. I wuld be able t revlutinize his life with ne quick snip frm my clippers. The way I was feeling this jb was right up my street.
I pened the cage dr and slwly inserted my hand.
“Cme n, Peter,” I wheedled (哄騙). As I lifted him ut, I felt in my pcket with the ther hand fr the clippers. Then I stpped.
The tiny head was n lnger pking cheekily frm my fingers but had fallen lsely t ne side. The eyes were clsed. He was dead.
Mrs Ddds and I lked at each ther in hrrr. When I turned my head twards Mrs Tmpkin, I was surprised t see that she was still ndding and smiling.
I drew her neighbr t ne side. “Mrs Ddds, hw much des she see?”
“Oh, she’s very shrt-sighted but she’s right vain despite her age. Never wuld she wear glasses. She’s hard f hearing, t.”
“Well, lk,” I said. My heart was still punding. “I just dn’t knw what t d. If I tell her abut this, the shck will be terrible. Anything culd happen.”

I lived with Lassie, a black and white dg, sitting with her head n my lap, her intelligent, brwn eyes staring at me as if t say, “Have a gd day.”
Lassie arrived at my frnt dr fur years ag. Because I culdn’t find its wner, I had t keep it. Thrughut the years, she was with me, prving t be a superb “judge” time and time again. I never knew if it was as a result f her sense f smell r sund r sixth sense. Hwever, whatever it was, she definitely had a talent humans lacked. She wuld either wag the tip f her tail a cuple f times t indicate that the visitrs were acceptable, r slightly curl her tp lip, which tld yu t be cautius. Her judgement was always accurate. Her gift was never mre apparent than tnight.
The drbell rang. I decided nt t answer it. It rang again mre insistently this time. Smene just wuldn’t g away. Still I hesitated. On the furth ring, with Lassie by my side, I finally answered the call. I was getting very nervus fr there std a “mnster”. The man had big eyes with a twisted bdy under a heavy vercat, and his head leaned slightly frward.
“May I use yur phne?” The deep vice came frm smewhere back in his thrat. Althugh the request was plite, his tne was rugh. I shrank back as he reached int his pcket and pulled ut a piece f paper. He tk a step frward and further asked me fr permissin. Again, I refused his request. Thinking he might try and frce his way in, I lked at Lassie t see if she was ready t defend ur hme. Surprisingly, she sat by my side, the tip f her tail wagging.
“Yu’re crazy, Lassie,” I thught t myself. But there was n denying sign. Based n past experience, I trusted her judgement. The man explained t me that he lst his phne by accident.

The Principal and the Ppcrn Ppper
