Speech and debate test the teenage character perhaps mre than any ther activity. The shy and the unsure ften have n desire t lk up frm their screens and engage in the ldest human interactin: persuasive ral arguments. It’s dreadful territry fr the average teenager. Research, writing, delivering a speech in frnt f yur peers --it all sunds like the kind f class students wuld be mst likely t skip. But Anna draws them in.
Classrm 161 is always full. Anna’s debate teams have a case full f medals; mst imprtantly, they have gne n t becme leaders f their cmmunities and examples t their families.
“This activity has changed my life. Just building cnnectins with peple I never, ever imagined building cnnectins with,” relates Alexander Hernandez Gnzalez. Alexander suffered frm scial anxiety thrughut his childhd. Then he discvered debate as a freshman, and it changed his life.

Many early appraches t language technlgy—and particularly translatin—gt stuck in a cnceptual dead end: the rules-based apprach. In translatin, this meant trying t write rules t analyze the text f a sentence in the language f rigin, breaking it dwn int a srt f abstract “interlanguage” and rebuilding it accrding t the rules f the target language. These appraches shwed early prmise. But language is full f ambiguities (歧義) and exceptins, s such systems were hugely cmplicated and easily brke dwn when tested n sentences beynd the simple set they had been designed fr.
Nearly all language technlgies began t get a lt better with the applicatin f statistical methds, ften called a “brute frce” apprach. This relies n sftware scanning vast amunts f data, lking fr patterns and learning frm precedent. Fr example, in parsing language (breaking it dwn int its grammatical cmpnents), the sftware learns frm large bdies f text that have already been parsed by humans. It uses what it has learned t make its best guess abut a previusly unseen text. In machine translatin, the sftware scans millins f wrds already translated by humans, again lking fr patterns. In speech recgnitin, the sftware learns frm a bdy f recrdings and the transcriptins made by humans.
Thanks t the grwing pwer f prcessrs, falling prices fr data strage and, mst crucially, the explsin in available data, this apprach eventually bre fruit. Mathematical techniques that had been knwn fr decades came int their wn, and big cmpanies with access t enrmus amunts f data were ready t benefit.
The final advance, which began nly abut five years ag, came with the arrival f deep learning thrugh digital neural netwrks (DNNs). These are ften claimed t have qualities similar t thse f the human brain: “neurns” are cnnected in sftware, and cnnectins can becme strnger r weaker in the prcess f learning. But Nils Lenke, head f research fr a language technlgy cmpany, explains matter-f-factly that “DNNs are just anther kind f mathematical mdel,” the basis f which had been well understd fr decades. What changed was the hardware being used.
Almst by chance, DNN researchers discvered that the graphical prcessing units (GPUs) used t prduce graphics in applicatins like vide games were als brilliant at handling neural netwrks. The technique has already prduced big leaps in quality fr all kinds f deep learning, including decding handwriting, recgnizing faces and classifying images. Nw they are helping t imprve all manner f language technlgies, ften bringing enhancements f up t 30%. That has shifted language technlgy frm usable at a pinch t really rather gd. But s far n ne has quite wrked ut what will mve it n frm merely gd t reliably great.
32. Accrding t the passage, which f the fllwing is a prblem f the rules-based apprach?
A. Rules are difficult t identify in sme languages.
B. It is impssible t find all the rules in a language.
C. The rules are ften misinterpreted by researchers.
D. There are always rules t abstract t understand.
33. ________ has a part t play in enabling the “brute frce” apprach t gradually bear fruit?
A. The increasing amunt f dataB. The falling prices f scanning sftware
C. The availability f recrdings and transcriptsD. The wider knwledge peple have f language
34. Which f the fllwing is Nils Lenke mst likely t agree with abut DNNs?
A. They are a big breakthrugh.B. They depend mre n hardware.
C. They are nt innvative in nature.D. They haven’t been scientifically prved.
35. What des the writer imply abut GPUs?
A. They are inferir t DNNs in their quality f deep learning.

來源:Literary landmarks yu need t visit in Paris - Reader’s Digest
Here are sme f the literary landmarks yu shuld add t yur travel bucket list.
根據(jù)“When it pened, it primarily sld English-language bks”和One f Paris’s mst famus English-language bkstres, 可知兩個(gè)書店都賣英文的書籍,答案選A。
24. A 25. C 26. A 27. D
根據(jù)第二段“Speech and debate test the teenage character perhaps mre than any ther activity. 故選A。
根據(jù)第四段“This activity has changed my life. Just building cnnectins with peple I never, ever imagined building cnnectins with,” relates Alexander Hernandez Gnzalez. Alexander suffered frm scial anxiety thrughut his childhd. Then he discvered debate as a freshman, and it changed his life.
根據(jù)第一段最后一句“Her class, which began as an elective class t give students expsure t skills that prepare them fr cllege, has becme the class n campus that creates winners.(她的課最初是一門選修課,旨在讓學(xué)生接觸到為上大學(xué)做準(zhǔn)備的技能,現(xiàn)在已經(jīng)成為校園里培養(yǎng)贏家的課程。)”和最后一段“‘I want them t just have the memry f making it thrugh, succeeding in a place like that and expressing a stry that leaves that place better’.”
根據(jù)第三段“Classrm 161 is always full. Anna’s debate teams have a case full f medals; mst imprtantly, they have gne n t becme leaders f their cmmunities and examples t their families. ”可推斷Anna是有影響力的;再根據(jù)第五段“What drives yung peple t stand up and passinately deliver a speech in frnt f a crwd full f strangers, a panel f judges and ppsing teams frm mre privileged high schls? The persn wh will always have their back: Anna Steed.

根據(jù)第二段“It’s unlikely, thugh, that the practice wuld have caught n in quite the same way if nt fr a cntinually grwing discmfrt abut fashin’s heavy ftprint. Frm carbn emissins t animal cruelty, fashin is under cnsiderable inspectin.
根據(jù)第三段“Fashin is a huge plluter. Accrding t the UN Envirnment Prgram, the industry is respnsible fr up t ne-fifth f all industrial water pllutin — due t the fact that mst clthes tday are prduced in prer cuntries where regulatin is weak and enfrcement weaker still. Waste water is dumped directly int rivers and streams, pisning the land as well as the water surces f peple and animals wh rely n them.
根據(jù)第四段“It’s easy t see why smene wh cares abut peple, planet and animals, as well as clthes, might turn t natural plant dyeing. Frm the beauty f the raw materials-ften wild plants-t the prperty f nly bnding with natural fiber like cttn and linen, frm the minr ftprint f upclycling ld clthing that has grayed r faded ver time t the vibrant and lng-lasting dyeing results, plant dyeing feels like a quiet act f rebellin.
根據(jù)第一段“In 2022, campaign grup Fashin Revlutin Chelsea dye garden fr its Chelsea Flwer Shw presentatin. An ancient craft, natural dyeing is a practice whse time has cme again, with hand tie-dyed fashin als making a cmeback in recent years.

根據(jù)第一段“Many early appraches t language technlgy—and particularly translatin—gt stuck in a cnceptual dead end: the rules-based apprach. In translatin, this meant trying t write rules t analyze the text f a sentence in the language f rigin, breaking it dwn int a srt f abstract “interlanguage” and rebuilding it accrding t the rules f the target language. These appraches shwed early prmise. But language is full f ambiguities (歧義) and exceptins, s such systems were hugely cmplicated and easily brke dwn when tested n sentences beynd the simple set they had been designed fr.(許多早期的語言技術(shù)方法,尤其是翻譯,都陷入了一個(gè)概念性的死胡同:基于規(guī)則的方法。
根據(jù)第二段“This relies n sftware scanning vast amunts f data, lking fr patterns and learning frm precedent.(這依賴于軟件掃描大量數(shù)據(jù),尋找模式并從先例中學(xué)習(xí))”以及第三段“Thanks t the grwing pwer f prcessrs, falling prices fr data strage and, mst crucially, the explsin in available data, this apprach eventually bre fruit.(多虧了處理器不斷增長(zhǎng)的能力,以及數(shù)據(jù)儲(chǔ)存價(jià)格的降低,更重要的是可利用數(shù)據(jù)的激增,這種方法最終有了成果)”可知,這種方法最終有成果最重要的因素是可利用數(shù)據(jù)的突然增多。故選A。
根據(jù)倒數(shù)第二段“But Nils Lenke, head f research fr a language technlgy cmpany, explains matter-f-factly that “DNNs are just anther kind f mathematical mdel,” the basis f which had been well understd fr decades. What changed was the hardware being used.(但是語言技術(shù)公司的研究主管Nils Lenke認(rèn)為,DNNs只是另一種數(shù)學(xué)模式,它的原理在很多年前就已經(jīng)知道了,唯一有所改變的就是硬件的使用)”可知,Nils Lenke認(rèn)為,DNNs在本質(zhì)上沒有什么太大的變化,只有硬件的使用發(fā)生了變化而已,即它們?cè)诒举|(zhì)上沒有創(chuàng)新。故選C。
根據(jù)最后一段“That has shifted language technlgy frm usable at a pinch t really rather gd. But s far n ne has quite wrked ut what will mve it n frm merely gd t reliably great.(這使得語言技術(shù)從緊要關(guān)頭的可用性轉(zhuǎn)變?yōu)檎嬲南喈?dāng)好。
C 37. G 38. F 39. A 40. E
36. 根據(jù)上文內(nèi)容“It is a scial influence applied n an individual in rder t get that persn t act r believe in a similar way as a larger grup.(它是一種施加于個(gè)人身上的社會(huì)影響,目的是讓這個(gè)人的行為或信仰與更大的群體相似。)” 選項(xiàng)C“This influence can be negative r psitive in any grup size.(這種影響在任何規(guī)模的群體中都可能是消極的或積極的。)”

38. 根據(jù)空后內(nèi)容“They may g t far as t abandn their sense f right and wrng. 39. 根據(jù)下文內(nèi)容“A student whse friends are gd at academic may be urged t wrk harder and get gd grades. Players n a sprts team may feel driven t play harder in rder t help the team win.(一個(gè)學(xué)生的朋友在學(xué)習(xí)上很好,可能會(huì)被敦促更加努力學(xué)習(xí),取得好成績(jī)。 選項(xiàng)A“Hwever, peer pressure is nt always negative.(然而,同輩壓力并不總是負(fù)面的。)” 故選A。
40. 根據(jù)上文“Althugh peer pressure is smetimes quite bvius, it can als be subtle that a persn may nt even ntice that it is affecting their behavir. Fr this reasn, when making imprtant decisins, simply ging with an instinct is risky. 選項(xiàng)E“They shuld als questin if they are just fllwing the crwd.(他們也應(yīng)該質(zhì)疑自己是否只是在隨大流。)”

故填a。
此處用It作形式主語,真正的主語是不定式t appreciate these cultural heritages。故填t appreciate。
