In additin, as a science writer, I try t get readers t understand hw science is related t their daily lives.
S I ended up n that frightening stage n that sunny Saturday in April — Earth Day. Despite the bdy shakes and fear, I persevered. That day, I lked ut int the crwd f like-minded science supprters and I felt cmfrt.

Darwin nted that sme human emtinal expressins might have started as part f a physilgical (生理的) functin: fr example, expsing the teeth t bite fd. The functin, hwever, tk n meaning and became a frm f cmmunicatin which signals anger.
The same may be true fr the animals. Baby mnkeys cry fr attentin. They als cry t signal t an adult that they want t be carried.
“Chimpanzees d make upset vice when they are being weaned (斷奶) by their mthers r have lst their mthers r anther individual,” says Anne Pusey, a prfessr at the University f Minnesta. “They whimper (嗚咽) and cry and scream. When we hear these calls, the emtin invlved seems bvius. Hwever, they d nt weep in the sense f prducing tears. I have seen an adlescent male whimpering when he lst sight f his lder brther with whm he had been traveling.”
Babies f many mammalian species, including rats, cry. Mrever, when a baby rat cries, ften his mther brings the fallen pup back int the nest. This is prbably a straightfrward cmmunicatin, as it is with humans. Hwever, psychlgists at the University f Iwa aren’t cnvinced.
The Iwan researchers can cause the same crying sunds by prducing large decreases and then increases in bld flw. The bld flw als ges dwn when baby rats get cld. Thus, they cnclude baby rats cry in the same way that we sneeze. Of curse the rat baby culd be crying because he’s cld and wants his mther t knw.
“All yung mammals make cries when separated frm their mther,” says Jaak Panksepp, a psychlgist at Bwling Green State University. “If yu’re willing t call this crying, then certainly ther animals shw this emtinal respnse.” he says, “Sme f us take seriusly that animals d have emtins.”

Lichens (地衣)
Lichens lk like splashes f paint left behind by a careless painter. Unlike many plants, they d nt require sil t grw. They grw n trunk f trees in steaming trpical rain frests, n farmers’ fencepsts, n the bricks f big-city buildings, and n ld gravestnes. Lichens can tlerate extremes f climate. They grw n rcks in ht springs, n wind-swept muntaintps, and n stnes in the driest deserts. In the Arctic, lichens are the principal surce f fd fr reindeer. Whle muntainsides in Antarctica appear green and range because f the presence f lichens; they are ne f the few plants that can survive there. They are amng the ldest f knwn plants. Recently, scientists discvered lichen fssils n a rck in a mine in suthwest China that date back 600 millin years.
When cnditins becme harsh, lichens becme drmant (休眠). If there is nt enugh misture, they simply dry up, but a shrt rain r even a heavy dew gives them new life. When grwing n rck surfaces, lichens prduce acids that disslve (溶解) the minerals, cntributing t the prcess f weathering by which rcks are slwly turned t sil. This prperty enables lichens t be pineers. They appear n barren rck rubbed clean by glaciers, fires, lava flws, r flds, beginning the prcess f sil frmatin that allws msses (苔蘚) and ther plants t later take rt. But, despite their hardiness, lichens are extremely sensitive t airbrne particles (顆粒). That’s why they serve as an early warning system fr air pllutin.
It is the acids lichens prduce that give them their distinctive clrs. Lichens are ften spken f in the same breath as msses, and sme lichens are even called msses, but true msses are all distinctively green, whereas lichens appear in many vivid clrs. At ne time, acids frm lichens were used t make dyes, such as the purple dye, the blue dye, and the red dye, and they are smetimes still used that way tday. Sme lichens, such as akmss, cntain ils that prduce fragrant drs used in scented saps, csmetics and perfumes. Sme lichens are als knwn t have antibitic prperties t kill bacteria.
S definite are the frm, clr, and characteristics f these rganisms that fr hundreds f years lichens were cnstantly under scientists’ micrscpe.
