Rick Guidtti put aside his career as a fashin phtgrapher t turn his lens t peple living with genetic, physical and behaviral differences.
He says what changed his perceptin f beauty was a chance encunter with an albin (患白化病的) girl. “I was just tired f peple telling me wh was beautiful. Every seasn that face wuld change but I was always tld wh was beautiful. As an artist, I dn’t see beauty just n cvers f magazines. I see it everywhere. S that was my riginal intentin—that pened my eyes a little wider and wider.”
Guidtti has created Psitive Expsure, a nt-fr-prfit rganizatin that uses phtgraphy and vide t transfrm public perceptins and prmte a wrld where differences are celebrated. Guidtti and Psitive Expsure are featured in a new dcumentary called “On Beauty”.
One f the wmen featured in the film is Jayne Waithera. “I never thught I was beautiful because nbdy said that t me, but meeting him was my prfund mment. I remember that particular day he tk my picture and I felt s gd like l felt there’s smebdy wh, like, really lves me and sees me fr wh I am and wh sees me mre than my cnditin.”
Guidtti is traveling frm city t city t prmte “On Beauty”. He says his tur is nt abut mney; it’s abut the message. “”As I travel frm cmmunity t cmmunity, I’m taking phtgraphs band I’m empwering individuals with a psitive sense f wh they are. They’re seeing beauty in their reflectin but I’m als empwering their families and they in turn are empwering their cmmunities as well. All is based n the philsphy f change—hw yu see, hw yu change.”
24. Why did Guidtti change his career?
A. Because he wanted t create his wn cmpany.
B. Because the beauty n cvers f magazines is nt beautiful.
C. Because he culdn’t earn enugh mney frm his frmer career.

The US Institute f Electrical and Electrnics Engineers (IEEE) recently asked scientists, lawyers, scial scientists and ther experts t cnsider sme f these ethical dimensins. T give tw examples: n privacy, as we let mre listening devices int ur hmes, hw d we prevent the data they cllect falling int the wrng hands thrugh hacking (黑客) r simply being sld between cmpanies withut us receiving any mney? Anther example: mixed reality, including virtual reality, will becme pervasive in the next few years. As we mve frm headsets t what the IEEE cmmittee describes as “mre subtle and integrated sensry enhancements” we will use technlgy t live in an illusry wrld in many aspects f ur lives. Hw d we balance the rights f the individual, cntrl ver ur virtual identity, and the need t live and interact n a face-t-face basis while being empwered t live rich lives in mixed reality?
There is, f curse, always a tensin between innvatin and regulatin. But it can ften seem that giant steps are taken in technlgy with minimal public discussin. Take the self-driving car: althugh it may be safer than human drivers and is likely t save mre than a millin lives a year wrldwide, it will als take jbs frm drivers, traffic plice, sign-makers, car-repair cmpanies, carmakers and mre. Is this a bargain we want t make? In taking that decisin, have we given thught t a car that knws everywhere we g, decides rutes, perhaps, based n paid advertisements frm shps alng the way-and listens and sees everything we d n bard? What will happen t that data and can it be kept safe?
Additinally, while sme wrry abut the uncmmn “trlley prblem” f whm the car shuld chse t hit in a freak accident—an ld lady r a mther and baby—perhaps the mre frequent issue will be hw we find ut what the algrithm (運(yùn)算程序) was thinking at the time f an accident, because AIs (Artificial Intelligence) are self-learning and devise their wn strategies.
Similar cncerns are emerging ver the internet f things. Rbt vacuum-cleaners already plt cleaning cycles using cmputer-aided visin that, fr sme mdels, is relayed t their manufacturers. As mre things at hme becme cnnected, they will be hackable and the data they cllect saleable.
It’s time fr sme messy, demcratic discussins abut the future f AI.
28. Tw examples in Paragraph 1 are used t ______.
A. shed sme light n hacking in ur mdern life
B. lead the reader t think f ethical issues brught by hi-tech
C. lead in the fllwing example cncerning the self-driving car
D. list the existing prblems that caught the attentin f experts
29. The wrd “pervasive” in Paragraph 1 prbably means “______”.
A. intelligentB. pwerfulC. widespreadD. skillful
30. The authr f the passage wuld agree that ______.
A. the public need t be cautius abut risks f innvatin
B. mre giant innvative steps will lead t fewer public discussin
C. disadvantages f the self-driving car will utweigh its advantages
D. artificial intelligence fails t have a prmising and bright future
3. In the passage, the authr intends t ______.
A. expse sme underlying prblems in high-technlgy
B. call n peple t mve away frm technlgical innvatin
C. illustrate AI’s abilities in self-devising and self-learning strategies
D. display ur inter-cnnected cmputer-aided life in future
D
There are currently 21.5 millin students in America, and many will be funding their cllege n brrwed mney. Given that there’s nw ver $1.3 trillin in student lans n the bks, it’s pretty clear that many students are far frm sensible. The average student’s debt upn graduatin nw appraches $40.000, and as cllege becmes ever mre expensive, calls t make it “free” are multiplying. Even Hillary Clintn says that when it cmes t cllege, “Csts wn’t be a barrier.”
But the nly way cllege culd be free is if the faculty and staff dnated their time, the buildings required n maintenance, and campuses required n utilities. As lng as it’s impssible t prduce smething frm nthing, csts are abslutely a barrier.
The actual questin we debate is wh shuld pay fr peple t g t cllege. If taxpayers are t bear the cst f frgiving student lans, shuldn’t they have a say in hw their mney is used?
At least taxpayers shuld be able t decide what students will study n the public dime. If we’re ging t frce taxpayers t ft the bill fr cllege degrees, students shuld nly study thse subjects that are f greatest benefit t taxpayers. After all, students making their wn chices in this respect is what caused the prblem in the first place. We simply dn’t need mre petry, gender studies, r scilgy majrs. Hw d we knw which subjects benefit sciety? Easy.
Average starting salaries give a clear indicatin f what type f training sciety needs its new wrkers t have. Certainly, there are benefits t a cllege majr beynd the jb a student can perfrm. But if we’re talking abut the benefits t sciety, the nly thing that matters is what the majr enables the student t prduce fr sciety. And the value f what the student can prduce is reflected in the wage emplyers are willing t pay the student t prduce it.
A lw wage fr elementary schl teachers, hwever, desn’t mean elementary educatin isn’t imprtant. It simply means there are t many elementary schl teachers already.
Meanwhile, there are few wh are willing and able t perfrm jbs requiring a petrleum engineering majr, s the value f ne mre f thse peple is very high.
S we can have taxpayers pick up students' tuitin in exchange fr dictating what thse students will study. Or we can allw students bth t chse their majrs and pay fr their educatin themselves. But in the end, ne f tw things is true:
Either a cllege majr is wrth its cst r it isn’t. If yes, taxpayer financing isn't needed. If nt, taxpayer financing isn’t desirable. Either way, taxpayers have n business paying fr students’ cllege educatin.
32. In the authr’s pinin, free cllege educatin is ______.
A. impracticalB. unsustainableC. a gal t strive frD. a way t scial equality
33. What shuld students d if taxpayers are t bear their cllege csts?
A. Wrk even harder t repay sciety.
B. Chse their subjects mre carefully.
C. Chse majrs that will serve sciety’s practical needs.
D. Allw taxpayers t participate in cllege administratin.
34. What des the authr say abut the value f a student’s cllege educatin?
A. It is underestimated by prfit-seeking emplyers.
B. It is t be prved by what they can d n the jb.
C. It is well reflected in their average starting salary.
D. It is embdied in hw they remve scial barriers.
35. What message des the authr want t cnvey in the passage?
A. Students shuld think carefully whether t g t cllege.
B. Taxpayers shuld nly finance the mst gifted students.
C. The wrth f a cllege educatin is pen t debate.
D Cllege students shuld fund their wn educatin.
