This mrning, while tidying up my ffice, I fund an pen bx f packaged chclate ckies that I’d bught smetime last year. The use-by date had cme and gne mre than eight mnths ag. Curius, I tk a small bite. They still tasted pretty gd.
Welcme t the wrld f ultra-prcessed (超加工) fds. And we’re eating a lt f them. Ultra-prcessed fds currently make up nearly 60% f what the typical adult eats, and nearly 70% f what kids eat. They include everything frm ckies and sdas t packaged breads and frzen meals, even ice creams. Yu might nt realize yu’re eating ne, but lk clse and yu’ll see many ingredients yu wuldn’t find in yur kitchen.
And a large and grwing amunt f evidence has cnsistently linked vercnsumptin f ultra-prcessed fds t pr health utcmes. “T much f it leads t besity and type tw diabetes (糖尿病) and heart disease and cancer.” says Christpher Gardner, a prfessr at Stanfrd University, wh has spent decades studying the links between diet and chrnic disease (慢性病).
One reasn ultra-prcessed fds likely lead t health issues seems bvius: They tend t be lw in fiber and high in calries, salt, added sugar and fat, which are all linked with pr health utcmes when eaten t much.
Eventually, Gardner says the burden f making healthier fd chices shuldn’t fall cmpletely n cnsumers-especially when it cmes t setting kids up fr better health lng term. “It des need the whle sciety t pay attentin t this, t wrk tgether, including the fd industry and the gvernment, t be able t reduce the amunt f ultra-prcessed fd ur kids are cnsuming in their day,” he says.

Researchers are trying t explre creative ways t reduce e-waste. Nw ne team has invented a water-activated battery (水激活電池) made f paper and ther sustainable materials.
Sme e-waste is relatively large: ld phnes and air cnditiners, fr instance. Other e-waste is mre unnticeable, such as batteries. It’s these small batteries that are big prblems. Nbdy really pays attentin t where they end up. Researchers at the Swiss Federal Labratries fr Materials Science and Technlgy are wrking t address this prblem. They invented a water-activated paper battery using envirnmentally friendly materials that culd eventually replace the mre harmful batteries cmmn in lw-pwer devices.
A traditinal battery is made f plastic, metal r ther harmful materials. The paper battery wrks the same as a traditinal battery. It has a psitively charged (帶電的) side, a negatively charged side, and a cnductive material (傳導(dǎo)材料) between the tw. In the new battery, the psitively and negatively charged sides are inks printed nt the frnt and back f a piece f paper. That paper is filled with salt, which disslves (溶解) when the paper is wet. When the paper is dry, the battery is ff. Once the paper is wet, the battery activates within 20 secnds. The new battery’s perating perfrmance wrsens as the paper dries. When the scientists rewet the paper during testing, the battery begins t wrk again and lasts an hur befre beginning t dry ut again.
Althugh the researchers shwed that their battery culd pwer an alarm clck, it is unlikely t replace standard batteries nw. It is hard t predict a time line fr prducing such batteries in a large number, but that future may nt be s far ff.
“This really starts with the develpment f sustainable materials,” Nystr?m, the lead authr, explains, “Frm there, I think we are able t create smething that is quite useful.”

A. It dries within 20 secnds.B. It can be used many times.
C. It has ink n the frnt side.D. It breaks easily in salt water.
11 What can be inferred abut the new battery frm the last tw paragraphs?
A. It stres huge pwer.B. It takes ages t make it.
C. It is highly prfitable.D. It has a prmising future.

Imagine a small lifestyle change that culd bth reduce yur weight and risk f depressin and bst yur prductivity. It’s as simple as getting up early n a regular basis. Mre interestingly, science is supprting it.

Multiple studies shw mrning types tend t perfrm better academically and at wrk and get mre dne than night wls. Accrding t thse early birds, advantages f the mrning include less distractin, mre time and mre space t think and get wrk dne. There are fewer ther peple up, fewer phne calls, text messages, emails and mre. Als, studies shw ur abilities, energy and md are generally at their peak in the mrning, including late mrning.
Hw early is “early”? Scientists haven’t yet determined an ideal, exact time t start and end the day. It is suggested that peple shuld adjust sleep timing with the sun’s daily cycle and light. But it desn’t mean t rise as sn as natural light first appears. Als, many f us suffer frm sleep prblems during the night that make rising early undesirable. And if yu’re a natural wl, trying t change yur pattern might nt favr yu.
Pay attentin when yu feel mst energetic. While being an early riser may have benefits fr yur health, what’s mre imprtant is getting enugh, quality sleep and keeping a regular pattern. Dn’t set the alarm fr 5:30 am if it means reducing verall sleep time. Yu culd end up suffering frm negative effects f sleep deprivatin(缺乏), including a prer md and energy, less ability t cncentrate, weight gain and mre.
12. What d the underlined wrds “night wls” in Paragraph 2 refer t?
A. Peple wh rise early.B. Peple wh sleep late.
C. Peple wh are depressed.D. Peple wh are verweight.
13 What is Paragraph 3 mainly abut?
A. When ur abilities are best.B. What advantages f mrnings are.
C. Why early birds perfrm better.D. Wh cmmunicates in the mrning.
14 What might happen t yu if yu set yur alarm t early?
A. Yu will lse sme weight.B. Yu culd have mre wrk dne.
C. Yu may find it hard t fcus.D. Yu can see the first natural light.
15. What is a suitable title fr the text?
