In one of my favorite photographs of my mother, she's about 18 and very tall, with long, blond hair. It's the 1970s and my dad is there, too, hugging her from behind.
I haven't seen this photo for years. I have no idea where it is now, but I still think of it and, specifically, my mom is in it. She looks so young and innocent. At that time she hasn't yet dropped out of college, or got married. The young woman in this photo has no idea that life will bring her five children and five grandchildren, one divorce, two marriages and a move across the country.
For me, as for many daughters, the time before my mother became a mother is a string of stories, told and retold: the time she sold her childhood Barbie doll to buy a ticket to Woodstock; the time she worked as a waitress at Howard Johnson's, struggling to pay her way through her first year at Rutgers. The old photos of her are even more appealing than the stories because they're a historical record, carrying the weight of fact.
It is always a comfort from those photos to know that time, aging and motherhood cannot take away a woman's essential identity. For daughters who closely resemble their moms, it must be an even bigger comfort: these mothers and daughters are twins, separated by a generation ,and an old photo serves as a kind of mirror.
For daughters, these old photos of our mothers feel like both a chasm(巨大差異)and a bridge. The woman in the picture is someone other than the woman we know. She is also exactly the person in the photo-still, right now. Finally, we see that the woman we've come to think of as Mom-whether she's nurturing(養(yǎng)育), or disapproving, or thoughtful, or supportive, or sentimental--is also a mysterious, fun, brave babe.
She's been here all this time.
24.What can we know about the author's mother from paragraphs 2&3?
A.She divorced twice all her life
B.Life was tough for her during her first year at college
C.She traveled across the country in her youth
D.She was good at storytelling
25.Why does the author find the photo of her mother appealing?
A.The photo reminds her of her mother
B.Her mother looks young and happy in the photo
C.She wonders why her mother dropped out of college
D.The photo tells a lot about her mother in her youth
26.Some photos of mothers bring comfort to their daughters because________.
A.the photos are kept well even after generations
B.the photos record the life of the mothers faithfully
C.the photos help daughters to learn more about their mothers
D.the photos show the essential part of the mothers remains unchanged
27.Which one could be the best title of the passage?
A.The Pictures of Our Mothers
B.Our Mothers as We Never Saw Them
C.My Favorite Picture of My Mother
D.The Way to Learn About Our Mothers
C
You may not realize it, but when you stare at your partner's eyes, there's a good chance that you’re looking at a modified reflection of yourself. Researchers have found that people choose partners who tend to be of similar size, shape, and race as themselves ... and they may even have facial features in common.
Take Lot Geels from Amsterdam and her American husband, Brock Mosovsky, for example. “We have similar blonde hair and blue eyes,” says Lot. “Neither of us is very tall. We're both built athletically and we’re both mainly of European origin.
Even if you don't look like your partner, you likely share nonphysical characteristics, according to a growing field of research, like education level, socioeconomic status, religion, personality features, and even core values.
Lot and Brock fall into this type as well. “We both have PhDs and work in research,” she says. “We both live an active lifestyle, mainly rock climbing and skiing. Our world views are pretty simi-lar, and we're both hard-working, social and friendly people.”
Researchers have been studying the phenomenon of people with similarities pairing up—known as positive assortative coupling—for decades. If you’re sure that “opposites attract”, you may be surprised by research findings, which prove that like attracts like. However, if you believe that “l(fā)ikes attract”, you probably understand why people surprisingly seek life partners who remind them, on some comforting level, of themselves.
“There's an element of predictability when you date somebody of a similar background,” says Ty Tashiro, the author of The Science of Happily Ever After. “They’re less threatening, less scary. They'll be more of a familiar person from the start. Familiarity is something we find attractive.”
28.What can we infer about Lot and Brock?
A.They have the same hair and eyes. B.They both come from wealthy families.
C.They are attracted by each other’s similarities. D.They both have the same cultural background.
29.Which of the following is close to the underlined expression “positive assortative”?
A.Of the preferred type. B.Of the different type.
C.Of the similar type. D.Of the original type.
30.Why do people try to find similar people as partners according to Ty Tashiro?
A.They are comfortable to stay with. B.They are more threatening and scarier.
C.They can develop the same hobbies and interests. D.They have the same status and back ground.
31.What message does the author try to convey?
A.Love me, love my dog. B.Birds of a feather flock together.
C.A good wife makes a good husband. D.Absence makes the heart grow fonder.
D
Humans are not the only ones who underwent self-domestication. So did our close relatives, the bonobos, and the species we call our best friend. A tiny proportion of the genome differentiates dogs from wolves, and yet millions of dogs are comfortably curled up in our homes, while wolves move around at the edge of extinction.
When our research group began its work almost 20 years ago, we discovered that dogs also have extraordinary intelligence: they can read our gestures better than any other species. Wolves, in contrast, are mysterious and unpredictable. Their home is the wilderness, and that wilderness is shrinking.
But not so long ago the evolutionary race between dogs and wolves was so close, it was unclear who would win. Dogs, in fact, did not descend from wolves. Instead, dogs and wolves shared a wolflike ancestor.
Folklore supposes that humans brought wolf puppies into camp and domesticated them. Or as wolf expert David Mech wrote in 1974, “Evidently early humans tamed wolves and domesticated them, eventually selectively breeding them and finally developing the domestic dog from them.” But this story has not held up. Taming an animal occurs during its lifetime. Domestication happens over generations and involves changes to the genome.
So how did wolves turn into dogs? Back in the Ice Age, as our human populations grew more sedentary, we probably created more rubbish, which we then dumped outside our camps. These leavings would have included tempting pieces of food for hungry wolves. Not every wolf would have been able to scavenge, however. These animals would have had to be unafraid of humans, and if they displayed any aggression toward us, they would have been killed. After generations of selection for friendliness without intentional selection by humans, this special population of wolves would have begun to take on a different appearance. Coat color, ears, tails: all probably started to change.
Animals that could respond to our gestures and voices would be extremely useful as hunting partners and guards. They would have been valuable as well for their warmth and companionship, and slowly we would have allowed them to move from outside our camps to our firesides. We did not domesticate dogs. The friendliest wolves domesticated themselves.
32.What can be summarized about wolves and dogs from the first three paragraphs?
A.Wolves are smarter than dogs.
B.They are very much racially divided.
C.They are close relatives but dogs seem to be on the winning side.
D.Dogs have made their ways to indoor life while wolves to the wild.
33.What is the meaning of the underlined word “sedentary” in paragraph 5?
A.diverse B.limited
C.living in the same place D.involving regular migration
34.What does the author conclude from the history of dogs and wolves?
A.Dogs evolved from wolves.
B.Selective breeding developed domestic dogs.
C.Taming and domesticating an animal are the same thing.
D.Friendliness as a quality translates into an evolutionary strategy.
35.Which of the following is suitable for a title?
A.From Wolf to Dog B.Dog: Our Favorite Pet
C.An Intentional Domestication D.A Competition Story between Wolf and Dog
第二節(jié)(共5小題;每小題2. 5分,滿分12. 5分)
根據(jù)下面短文,從短文后的選項中選出可以填入空白處的最佳選項。選項中有兩項為多余選項。
Thinking is great. But action makes things happen. One of the biggest differences with people that successfully grow, expand themselves, and reach their goals, is that they consistently take action. Action takes energy though, so where does that energy come from? It comes from inside. 36
Here are several ways to light the fire and inspire yourself to take action.
Act like you mean it. Maybe you want to get in great shape, but are you acting like you mean it? How many hours are you putting in each week? What routines are you trying? 37 Who are your instructors and models? What bold actions are you taking? If you act like you mean it, you'll make better choices, show more confidence, and build energy that helps you spring up.
38 Find some role models and heroes to use to lift your spirits. Just having some examples under your belt can inspire you to new levels. For example, for me, I always look to the amazing physical and philosophical achievements of Bruce Lee. Chances are, no matter what problem or challenge you're up against, somebody's been there and done that.
Shift to the future. Always thinking of the past is a quick way to bring yourself down. To lift yourself up, switch to the future and imagine the possibilities. See what's possible. This is where hope springs from. A few simple ways to shift to the future are... “How can I solve this?”…or "What would good look like?”…or "What's the end in mind?" 39
Connect to your values. You can connect everything you do to your values. This is a powerful way to inspire yourself with skill. 40 Whenever you take on a task, ask yourself, “What can I learn from this?" or "How can I improve this?” Simply by connecting to your values, you make use of your inner source of power. Your values fuel you and get you excited.
A.Stand out from the others.
B.Inspiration is a powerful force. ,
C.Stand on the "shoulders of giants”.
D.Or you want to be a leading figure.
E.It's a valuable tool for us to use in analyzing possibilities.
F.Questions are a powerful way to switch to the future in effective way.
G.For example, let's say you value "continuous learning" or "growth”.

I grew up in Iowa on a farm by a major highway. During serious snowstorms, people often got stuck along that road. Weather prediction in the 1950s wasn’t too accurate, so we had no warning to store food before storms. Otherwise, we could keep enough food in the house to feed many people for days—including those stranded(使……滯留).
Our large house was home to my parents and 2 children—my brother Bob, six years older than me and I. We always had room for overnight storm “guests”, but rarely knew any of them. When I was 14, a heavy snowstorm stranded seven people at our house. By 8:00 p.m. my family and unexpected guests were settled in eating popcorn and watching TV.
Through the strong wind and TV, I thought I heard a loud noise outside. I heard it again. When I opened the door, I screamed. Someone was lying there, completely covered with snow, speaking unclearly and quietly about something we could not understand. Eventually, she was able to tell us that her wheelchair-bound husband was a half mile down the road with their truck stuck in the snow.
We listened in disbelief as she described crawling(爬行) along the road to our house because she knew they would freeze to death if they stayed in the truck. Through bright snow, on hands and knees, she felt her way along the highway edge to stay in a straight line.
My parents immediately called the highway police to come and locate her husband. They refused, saying they lacked equipment, and that it was unwise to risk any more lives. The woman cried and begged my family to rescue her husband in case he was frozen to death. Eventually, my father and brother determined to feel their way to a tractor(拖拉機) with chains on the wheels. They also carried a blanket and ropes.

1.續(xù)寫詞數(shù)應為150左右;

1.A
M: I don’t think it’s fair that Megan gets paid more for her chores than I do.
W: Well, she cleans all the bathrooms and washes the cars once every week. You only set the table once a day and sweep the floor a few times a month. Plus, she’s older.
2.A
M: Mary, I really want to apologize for what I said to you the other day.
W: Oh, forget it.
3.A
M: Should I put this sign in the window with the new sale prices?
W: No. The sale of the children’s clothing is more important right now. I want people to see it as soon as possible.
4.C
M: I left my mobile in your shop this morning. I tried on some jeans, so it may be in the changing room.
W: I’ve just been in there, and I’m afraid it isn’t there. Oh, look, is that it on the shelf beside the sweaters?
5.C
W: I thought the librarian said we could check out as many books as we need with our library cards.
M: That's right, but not those reference books.
6.A 7.C
W: Would you like some tea or coffee?
M: No, thank you. It's very late now. If I drink any tea or coffee, I'll be awake the whole night.
W: How about some water?
M: Yes, please.
W: Don't work too late! Your health hasn't been very good lately, so do be careful.
M: I know, but I have to finish these reports tonight. Our manager needs them for the meeting tomorrow morning.
W: Can I help you with anything?
M: No, I'm afraid you can't. Could you just turn the TV down a little so that it's not so noisy?
W: Yes, of course.
8.C 9.B 10.A
M: Life is stressful, so is being away from home for college. There are pressures from study, as well as the pressure on your pocket. Now we’re in a university to do an interview. Excuse me, may I ask you a few questions?
W: Go ahead, please!
M: What do you think of the living expenses in the city?
W: Everything is expensive, including clothing, housing, and transport.
M: Then, what’s it that you spend most money on?
W: I enjoy travelling, so I think it should be transport. As for food, it's quite cheap, as I cook myself most of the time. Besides, my clothes here are all brought from my home,??and they're nice and cheap. But every month, I have to spend over 400 dollars on the trains.
M: Then how’s your social life?
W: I'm very active and outgoing. I love hanging out chatting with my friends and meeting new people. But I don't drink nor smoke, so the only expense is perhaps the admission fees to the cinemas, club, and so on.
11.C 12.A 13.B 14.C
M: Hi, Sandra. Do you have a minute to talk?
W: Sure. What can I do for you?
M: It's your new dog. He's constantly barking when you're out. What's worse is that he causes all the other dogs in the neighborhood to bark, too. It's very annoying. I'm trying to study for some very important exams,
W: I do apologize. I had no idea. I'm away so much.
M: I know. It's also why he's barking so much. He's lonely. You shouldn't keep a dog like that locked in a house alone all day.
W: I know. But there have been so many robberies recently and I thought having a dog would help.
M: Well. I can understand that. Look, it's only the barking that's a problem, I could take him for a short walk a couple of times a day if you like.
W: Oh, that would be great.
15.C 16.B 17.C
W: I understand that you’re looking to start a show within the next two years. Is this true?
M: Yes. I’ve always wanted to be one of the people you see on television talking to guests about their careers.
W: Have you thought about other options? Those types of shows can be on many different types of media. Many hosts start out on the radio, but now the technology is better and you can even make a show on the Internet.
M: I want it to be the show that people watch while they’re eating dinner.
W: That’s a good goal, but it’ll be difficult to get you on television with just that idea. I suggest you come up with something that makes you different from the other similar shows airing now.
18.B 19.C 20.C
M: Minerva Public Library staff look forward to seeing students again this fall, and are happy to help them find library materials for schoolwork or for their own enjoyment. However, during COVID-19, there are new library rules to help ensure the safety of library staff, adult readers, and students. All students are required to wear masks while in the library, and food and drinks are not permitted. Seating is very limited and, in order to maintain social distancing, students are not allowed to sit on the floor in public areas of the building. Library occupancy is limited and, once that limit is reached, additional readers can’t come into the building. Because of these limitations, the library can’t be an after-school student hangout or a waiting room for rides, and parents should make other arrangements for their children. The library appreciates the cooperation of parents, caregivers, and students in following these rules to keep the library a safe and welcoming place for all readers.

67.Outside in the bright snow, they can only see a few feet. So it was easy to lose the sense of direction and not to be able to get back to the vehicle. They tied the ropes around their waists and to the tractor and made their way to the truck with difficulty. When seeing the woman’s husband, Dad quickly wrapped the blanket around the poor man, managed to lift him onto the tractor with Bob, and then drove home cautiously.
We were so excited when they returned with the woman’s husband. The woman was in tears when she saw her husband again. They thanked Dad and Bob again and again. We were so proud that they had the courage to do what they had done, for it was really a dangerous adventure. For years, a large fruit or flower basket appeared at our house from this grateful couple. Dad and the brother taught me the meaning of “hero” that cold night. They’d probably be surprised to know what they did for a total stranger still means to me.
