To grow sugary dates in the sand, Siwa’s farmers must first make the desert suitable for farming. As an oasis (綠洲) in Egypt, Siwa has been home to humans for thousands of years. Since ancient times, the oasis has had farms producing some of the most valuable dates in Egypt, and sugary dates have appeared on Egyptians, tables.
The desert environment in Siwa is not quite fit for plant, to grow. For example, the water there contains much salt. However, with local people’s efforts, the Siwa oasis contains complex agricultural (農(nóng)業(yè)的) fields, where date trees, crops and other plants grow in harmony (和諧). That impressed me a lot during my visit to the oasis. To make a new piece of field, farmers first move away the top soil and replace it with a mixture of sand and waste matter from animals. The first plants are medicinal plants. Then, farmers plant date trees and olive trees. These farming skills are passed down from generation to generation.
To grow date trees is demanding. And it takes 10 years for a new date tree to grow up, but once it does, the tree produces generous fruit: around 110 pounds of dates per year. Each farmer picks dates with the skilled hands They climb the trees using nothing more than a belt. In total, Siwa gets more than 25,000 tons of dates from 280,000 trees per year.
The dates can be eaten fresh, or made dry. Every part of the date tree is important in Siwa, from leaves made into beds and boxes to wood used to build houses. And then, of course, there’s the fruit itself. The dates can be cooked with goat meat or mixed with eggs for breakfast. They can also be mixed with flour, water, and olive oil, and boiled slowly to make a local dessert.
Local farmers once developed many unique date varieties, which their camels carried to Cairo. But later many of those varieties perished. And today only several major varieties remain and some have become quite rare and been at risk. The construction of a road in the oasis made the survival of local agricultural tradition even harder.
24. What can we learn about sugary dates from paragraph 1?
A. They have existed for a long time.
B. They prefer the desert environment.
C. They’re introduced to Egypt from abroad.
D. They’re the most valuable fruit in Egypt.
25. What impressed the author a lot during his visit to Siwa?
A. The great variety of plants grown there.
B. The hard but happy life of local people.
C. The difficulty in developing the local agriculture.
D. The farmers’wisdom and contribution to farming.
26. What do the figures mentioned in paragraph 3 show?
A. It is easy to pick dates from the trees.
B. It is worth the effort to plant date trees.
C. It costs a lot to grow date trees in the oasis.
D. It is necessary to develop agriculture in Siwa.
27. What does the underlined word in the last paragraph mean?
A. Improved. B. Died.
C. Became expensive. D. Remained unique.

A new analysis of photographs from the International Space Station has identified a shift in the kind of lighting technologies that European countries are using at night to brighten streets and buildings. Researchers have found that the old warm high-pressure street lights are rapidly being replaced by cooler LED lights. The University of Exeter study, published in Science Advances, claimed that “this phenomenon is widely increasing the risk of harmful effects to ecosystems”.
LED lighting was promoted as being intended to reduce emissions, but its usage has raised energy consumption. One explanation of this is that the increase in power efficiency and the associated decrease in economic cost have driven increased demand for lighting, therefore, any efficiency gains have been counteracted by increased consumption of light.
The study also claimed that previous research into the effects of light pollution have underestimated the impacts of blue light radiation. Chief among the health consequences of blue light is its ability to reduce the production of melatonin (褪黑素) that regulates sleep patterns in humans and other organisms. Scientific studies have warned that increased exposure to artificial blue light can worsen people’s sleeping habits.
The increase in blue light radiation in Europe has also reduced the visibility of stars in the night sky, which may have impacts on people’s sense of nature. Blue light can also alter the behavioral patterns of animals including bats and moths, as it can change their movements towards or away from light sources.
David Smith, of the conservation charity Buglife, said, “Light pollution can dramatically impact animals. We should consider light from a wider biological perspective than that of just humans and focus on better quality lighting that is harmonious with our natural world. Better quality and lower levels of lighting would help save energy, and lower financial costs, while also making our environment safer for living beings. Authorities can dim the lights during night hours, and change the bandwidths (帶寬值) of their LED bulbs to produce less harmful blue light.”
28. What is the phenomenon described in paragraph 1?
A. The rising demand for public lighting.
B. The increasing use of LED lights.
C. Old street lights producing lots of emissions.
D. Artificial lights at night wasting much energy.
29. What does the underlined word “counteracted” in paragraph 2 probably mean?
A. Judged B. Maintained C. Balanced. D. Strengthened.
30. In which aspect are people influenced by blue lights?
A. Sleep patterns. B. Eyesight. C. Learning ability. D. Social behaviors.
31. Why does the author mention David Smith?
A. To stress the importance of saving energy.
B. To persuade authorities to avoid using LED lights.
C. To show ways of improving the quality of LED bulbs.
D. To provide suggestions on reducing light pollution.

There was a time when a trip to the supermarket in the United States often ended with a seemingly simple question from the cashier, “Paper or plastic?” Well, which type of bag would you choose?
While both types of bags have some influence on the environment, it has long been supposed that paper bags are better. They are made from a renewable source, are broken down easily, burn without giving off thick smoke and can be recycled. However, the producing process behind paper bags uses more energy than that of plastic ones. How can this be true?
Studies show that paper bag production requires four times as much energy as plastic bag production. And the amount of water used to make them is twenty times larger. Besides, the influence on forests is very serious. It takes about fourteen million trees to produce ten billion paper bags, which happen to be the number of bags used in the United States yearly. In terms of recycling, the idea that paper bags are more environment-friendly than plastic ones can be quickly discarded. Research shows it requires about 98%less energy to recycle plastic than it does to recycle paper.
Even though paper bags might be more harmful than plastic ones, plastic still seems to be considered as the more harmful of the two by governments. In Ireland, for example, a tax has been introduced to discourage the use of plastic bags. People have to pay 22 cents for every plastic bag, and as a result, their use has dropped quickly.
There’s no doubt that it makes more sense to reuse these bags. However, we don’t seem to be doing that at present. That may be because they fall apart quickly. If so, cloth bags are a better choice, but still, their production also has a bad influence on the environment. So what to do? How should we answer the question of “Paper or plastic?” It seems that we first need to ask ourselves one more general question: “What can I do to help the environment?”
32. Why does the author ask the question at the end of paragraph 1?
A. To express the author’s doubts. B. To tell readers how to save money.
C. To show the kindness of the cashier. D. To introduce the point for discussion.
33. Compared with plastic bags, paper bags ________.
A. need more water to produce B. require less energy to recycle
C. have less influence on forests D. take more time to break down
34. What does the underlined word “discarded” in paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. Shared. B. Discussed. C. Given up. D. Put forward.
35. Which question does the author probably hope the cashier ask?
A. Paper or cloth? B. A new bag or your own one?
C. Paper or plastic? D. A small bag or big one?

Last Saturday, Jordon was taking a walk in the park near his home when he noticed a woman with a boy of about seven years old. When Jordon passed them, he heard the woman yell, “How stupid you are! You are good at nothing. ” Jordon stopped and looked at the little boy. The boy said nothing. He just stood there, looking upset. Jordon was reminded of his English teacher Mrs Mary in middle school. After he entered middle school, Jordon lacked self-confidence because he was often made fun of by others. He was often told that he was good at nothing, which Jordon believed. But one day it all changed. One day, in an English writing class, Mrs Mary asked them to read a novel. They were asked to write a new chapter of the novel after they finished reading the book. A few days later, Jordon handed in his story. He didn’t give it much thought. But the next day to his surprise, the comment “well done” from Mrs Mary came into view the moment he turned to the page where the story was written. When Jordon read that, he almost burst into tears. He never expected to be praised one day. He suddenly gained some self-confidence. That day after he returned home, he wrote a short story and gave it to Mrs Mary the next morning. And again he was praised.
Jordon became very interested in writing. He often wrote short stories and asked Mrs Mary to read them and correct them for him. Mrs Mary always corrected them for him. Mrs Mary always corrected the mistakes he had made and gave him good advice to improve them. One year later, Jordon joined the school newspaper and became an editor of it. He was no longer that boy who lacked self-confidence. He gained his confidence and was hopeful about his future. He succeeded in entering college and kept writing. Several years after graduating from college, he had his first book published. With some more books coming out, he became famous as a writer in his country. And he owed his success to Mrs Mary’s encouragement. Without her encouragement, his life might be very different now.

Dear friends,
Do you know the earth is becoming warmer and warmer? It is human activity that has caused global warming. A low - carbon lifestyle is the key to handling this big problem.
To fulfill it, we should do our part in our daily life. First, turn off the taps, the lights and so on when we are not using them. It is a good idea to recycle everything recyclable in our daily life. What’s more, motor vehicles use a lot of energy—so walk or ride a bike if we can. It also makes sense to stick to the habit of setting the temperature of our air conditioners at about 26℃ in summer.
Let’s take action now! If we can make small changes in our way of life, we can make a big difference to the earth.

Paragraph 1:
Inspired by his own life story, Jordan decided to do something for that boy. He went to the woman, who immediately recognized him because she had read his books and seen his pictures. Jordan started to chat with her. He told her that what she said to her boy was not appropriate. Then he told her about the encouragement he once got from Mrs. Mary. In the end, he said, “I couldn’t have become a writer if I had believed I was good at nothing.”
Paragraph 2:
The mother was ashamed when she heard that. She realized that she shouldn’t have called her son stupid, which would make his lose confidence in himself. So she said, “Thank you for your advice. I’ll never say such things to him again. Instead, I’ll find out what he’s good at and encourage him.” The woman then left with the boy. Looking at the back of the boy, Jordan felt relieved, hoping his action could make some difference to the boy.

She went to the doctor because of the pain in her arm, and a tumor was found in her upper lung near her shoulder. Mrs. Smith has two young children and a husband. Most of you know her family very well, since she has worked at our company for over five years. First, I want to say how impressed I am with your kindness to her family. For the last three months, someone has brought her family a meal to eat every single night! Your concern for her and her loved ones moves me. Mrs. Smith is very thankful for all your help during this difficult time. And lastly, I want to give you some good news. The doctor told Mrs. Smith that she is much better. She will have an operation in two weeks. If all goes well she will survive. Thank you all for caring!

根據(jù)第一段“Since ancient times, the oasis has had farms producing some of the most valuable dates in Egypt, and sugary dates have appeared on Egyptians, tables.(自古以來,這片綠洲就有農(nóng)場生產(chǎn)埃及最珍貴的椰棗,甜椰棗也出現(xiàn)在埃及人的餐桌上)”可知,甜椰棗已經(jīng)存在很長時間了,故選A項(xiàng)。
根據(jù)第二段“However, with local people’s efforts, the Siwa oasis contains complex agricultural fields, where date trees, crops and other plants grow in harmony. That impressed me a lot during my visit to the oasis.
根據(jù)第三段“And it takes 10 years for a new date tree to grow up, but once it does, the tree produces generous fruit: around 110 pounds of dates per year. Each farmer picks dates with the skilled hands. They climb the trees using nothing more than a belt. In total, Siwa gets more than 25,000 tons of dates from 280,000 trees per year.(一棵新的椰棗樹需要10年才能長成,但一旦長成,它就會結(jié)出大量的果實(shí):每年大約有110磅的椰棗。每個農(nóng)民都用熟練的雙手采摘椰棗。他們只用皮帶就可以爬樹。Siwa每年從28萬棵樹上總共收獲25000多噸椰棗)”可知,本段中提到的數(shù)字表明,種植椰棗樹是值得的。故選B項(xiàng)。
27. 【B】詞句猜測題。根據(jù)最后一段“Local farmers once developed many unique date varieties, which their camels carried to Cairo. But later many of those varieties perished. And today only several major varieties remain and some have become quite rare and been at risk. The construction of a road in the oasis made the survival of local agricultural tradition even harder.(當(dāng)?shù)剞r(nóng)民曾經(jīng)培育出許多獨(dú)特的椰棗品種,他們的駱駝把這些品種帶到開羅。

根據(jù)第一段“A new analysis of photographs from the International Space Station has identified a shift in the kind of lighting technologies that European countries are using at night to brighten streets and buildings. Researchers have found that the old warm high-pressure street lights are rapidly being replaced by cooler LED lights. The University of Exeter study, published in Science Advances, claimed that ‘this phenomenon is widely increasing the risk of harmful effects to ecosystems’.(一項(xiàng)對國際空間站照片的新分析發(fā)現(xiàn),歐洲國家在夜間用來照亮街道和建筑物的照明技術(shù)發(fā)生了變化。
根據(jù)第二段“LED lighting was promoted as being intended to reduce emissions, but its usage has raised energy consumption. One explanation of this is that the increase in power efficiency and the associated decrease in economic cost have driven increased demand for lighting, therefore, any efficiency gains have been counteracted by increased consumption of light.(LED照明被宣傳為旨在減少排放,但其使用增加了能源消耗。對此的一種解釋是,功率效率的提高和經(jīng)濟(jì)成本的相關(guān)降低推動了對照明的需求增加,因此,任何效率的提高都被光消耗的增加所 。)”并結(jié)合選項(xiàng)可推測, 畫線詞所在句表示任何效率的提高都被增加的光消耗“抵消”了,C 項(xiàng)意為“抵消, 中和”。 故選 C 項(xiàng)。
30. 【A】細(xì)節(jié)理解題。根據(jù)第三段中的“Chief among the health consequences of blue light is its ability to reduce the production of melatonin (褪黑素) that regulates sleep patterns in humans and other organisms. Scientific studies have warned that increased exposure to artificial blue light can worsen people’s sleeping habits.(藍(lán)光對健康的主要影響是它能夠減少褪黑激素的產(chǎn)生,而褪黑激素調(diào)節(jié)人類和其他生物的睡眠模式??茖W(xué)研究已經(jīng)警告說,增加暴露在人造藍(lán)光下會惡化人們的睡眠習(xí)慣。)”可知,藍(lán)光會影響人們的睡眠模式。故選A項(xiàng)。
根據(jù)最后一段“Light pollution can dramatically impact animals. We should consider light from a wider biological perspective than that of just humans and focus on better quality lighting that is harmonious with our natural world. Better quality and lower levels of lighting would help save energy, and lower financial costs, while also making our environment safer for living beings. Authorities can dim the lights during night hours, and change the bandwidths of their LED bulbs to produce less harmful blue light.(光污染會對動物產(chǎn)生巨大影響。

根據(jù)第二段“While both types of bags have some influence on the environment, it has long been supposed that paper bags are better.(雖然這兩種袋子對環(huán)境都有一定的影響,但人們一直認(rèn)為紙袋更好)”可知,作者提出問題是為了引出下文“紙袋真的更好嗎?”
根據(jù)第三段中“And the amount of water used to make them is twenty times larger.( 而制造它們所用的水量是它們的20倍)”可知,與塑料袋相比,紙袋需要更多的水來生產(chǎn)。故選A。
根據(jù)劃線詞下文“Research shows it requires about 98% less energy to recycle plastic than it does to recycle paper.(研究表明,回收塑料所需的能源比回收紙張所需的能源少98%)”可知,回收塑料比回收紙要更節(jié)約能源,所以紙袋比塑料更環(huán)保的想法可能很快會被放棄,故劃線詞意思是“放棄”。故選C。
根據(jù)最后一段中的“There’s no doubt that it makes more sense to reuse these bags.(毫無疑問,重復(fù)使用這些袋子更有意義)”可知,作者建議人們循環(huán)使用紙袋,從而推斷B選項(xiàng)“買個新袋子還是用你自己的袋子?”

Of course, there will be days when things come up, and you have to deviate (偏離) from your plan.”(這意味著每天留出特定的時間來學(xué)習(xí),然后盡可能嚴(yán)格地遵守這個時間表。 可知,上文講有時我們會因?yàn)榕R時事情偏離計(jì)劃,而E項(xiàng)However, try not to go off - track too often or for too long.(但是,盡量不要太頻繁或太長時間偏離軌道。)符合語境,其中g(shù)o off - track 和上文deviate from your plan對應(yīng)。故選E項(xiàng)。

38. 【F】由后文“Some people prefer to study in complete silence, while others find that some background noise helps them focus better. There is no right or wrong answer here-its all about finding a place to study. that allows you to work as efficiently as possible.”(有些人喜歡完全安靜地學(xué)習(xí),而另一些人則發(fā)現(xiàn)一些背景噪音有助于他們更好地集中注意力。 可知,這段主要講找一個學(xué)習(xí)的地方,而F項(xiàng)Where you study can also affect how effectively you use your time(你在哪里學(xué)習(xí)也會影響你如何有效地利用時間)符合語境,其中Where 和小標(biāo)題中place對應(yīng),且本句有啟下作用。故選F項(xiàng)。
39. 【G】由后文“it will be much easier for you to direct your study sessions accordingly and make better use of your time overall.”(你可以更容易地指導(dǎo)你的學(xué)習(xí)課程,更好地利用你的時間。) 而G項(xiàng)And once you know what specific topics or ideas you need to work on(一旦你知道了你需要研究的具體主題或想法)符合語境,其中specific topics or ideas you need to work on與后文direct your study sessions accordingly對應(yīng)。故選G項(xiàng)。
40. 【B】由后文“If you find that you’re struggling to understand the material or just not making progress as quickly as you’d like, seek assistance in time. There is no shame in admitting that you need assistance. In fact, it can save lots of time in the long run by getting you the support you need early on.”(如果你發(fā)現(xiàn)你很難理解這些材料,或者只是沒有像你想的那樣快速地取得進(jìn)展,請及時尋求幫助。 可知,這段主要講要學(xué)會尋求幫助,而B項(xiàng)Don’t be afraid to ask for help(不要害怕尋求幫助)符合語境,對下文有概括作用,且help與下文也對應(yīng)。故選B項(xiàng)。
