Over the curse f mre than 250 years, the US Pstal Service has gne thrugh many changes, including switching its fcus frm newspapers t package delivery service.
In the early 1830s, the Pstal Service fcused n delivering newspapers t keep Americans infrmed and cnnected. T keep newspaper subscriptins cheap and accessible, the Pstal Service charged high prices fr letter pstage—as much as a full-day’s wages. In rder t help the expansin f the passenger transprtatin netwrk in the new natin, the agency ften shared the letter delivery with stagecach lines. Later, it did the same fr private steambats and railrads, even airlines.
But the cmpetitin fr the letter delivery became s fierce that a wave f laws between1845 and 1851 made the Pstal Service the nly letter-carrier and set aside an annual budget t supprt the agency. Helped by lwered rates, letters sn became the agency's main business.
In 1863, the Pstal Service began t experiment with hme delivery, instead f just carrying letters frm pst ffice t pst ffice. By the dawn f the 20th century, even remte farmers’ letters were drpped int their mailbxes. Since then, hme delivery has becme a “universal public service(UPS)”that every American deserves t receive at a lw price.
By the early 20th century, the Pstal Service had set a fur-pund limit n mail: Anything heavier was suppsed t be left t private cmpanies. But the fur largest private carriers secretly cperated t charge cnfusing and ften terribly high rates. In 1913, the Pstal Service eventually tk the parcel(包裹) service away frm the private carriers.
Nw the Pstal Service’s nly grwing business is package delivery fed by the nline-shpping addictins. Since it is required by law t visit every husehld six days a week, the PstálService nw ffers cheap rates t private cmpanies like Amazn and FedEx t deliver their gds t ur drsteps. Hwever, mst Americans think that it is unfair t use taxpayers’ mney t help such big private cmpanies t deliver their gds.

A satellite is best understd as an bject that has nly ne frce acting n it—gravity. Technically speaking, anything that crsses the Karman Line at an altitude f 100kmis cnsidered a satellite in space.
Hwever, a satellite needs t be ging fast—at least 8km a secnd t avid falling back dwn t the earth immediately. If a satellite is traveling fast enugh, it will cnstantly “fall” tward the ball-shaped earth. It means that the satellite will fall arund the earth instead f crashing back n the surface.

In fact, all human missins, except fr the Apll and Chang'e flights t the mn, tk place in this rbit. Mst satellites als wrk in this rbit.
Gesynchrnus(與地球同步的) rbit is the best spt fr cmmunicatin satellites t use, hwever. This is an rbit abve the earth's equatr(赤道) at an altitude f 35,786km. At this altitude, the rate f “fall” arund the earth is abut the same as the earth's rtatin(自轉(zhuǎn)), which allws the satellite t stay abve the same spt n the earth almst cnstantly. The satellite thus keeps permanent cnnectins with twers n the grund and allws fr reliable cmmunicatin.
While sme satellites are best used arund the equatr, thers are better suited t mre plar rbits. Examples f plar-rbiting satellites include weather satellites, resurce satellites and military satellites. Plar-rbiting satellites are necessary because they can help scientists cmpare images frm the same seasn ver several years and mnitr changes ver time.

14、Which satellites are mre suitable fr Gesynchrnus rbit?
A. Weather satellites. B. Military satellites.
C. Resurce satellites. D. Cmmunicatin satellites.
15、What is the advantage f a plar-rbiting satellite?
A. Gathering necessary equatr data. B. Cmparing seasnal changes.
C. Prviding precise weather frecast. D. Prviding better telephne signals.
