All of Amazon’s US warehouse employees will once again be required to wear masks indoors beginning on Monday, whether they are vaccinated or not, the company confirmed to CNN Business on Friday.
The move comes one day after Amazon (AMZN) said it would delay its office return date for corporate employees until early next year. The back-to-back announcements highlight how one of America’s largest employers is rethinking its coronavirus policies in the face of rising infections linked to the Delta variant.
“In response to the concerning spread of Covid-19 variants in the US and guidance from public health authorities and our own medical experts, we are requiring face coverings indoors regardless of vaccination status,” said Kelly Nantel, an Amazon spokesperson, in a statement to CNN Business.
We are monitoring the situation closely and will continue to follow local government guidance and work closely with leading medical healthcare professionals, gathering their advice and recommendations as we go forward to ensure our buildings are optimized for the safety of our teams,” Nantel said.
A growing number of big companies have shifted their policies for corporate and frontline workers as the pandemic has worsened, in some cases requiring vaccinations. But for now, Amazon does not appear to be taking that step: Nantel declined to comment on whether the company is considering a vaccine mandate.
Amazon (AMZN) had relaxed its mask requirement on May 24 for fully vaccinated US warehouse workers, at least in areas where local regulations did not continue to require them. More recently, Amazon (AMZN) said it would stop offering on-site Covid-19 testing by the end of July, citing the wide availability of testing and vaccines.
Amazon’s business boomed during the pandemic as households and companies leaned on its various services. But the company was criticized early on in the pandemic after some workers said the company had not provided sufficient protective equipment or adequately cleaned its warehouses, leading to protests and lawsuits.
4. What is the main function of paragraph 1?
A. To introduce the topic B. To clarify the problem
C. To explain a concept D. To raise reader’s interest
5. What do we know about the move carried out by Amazon?
A. It means all of Amazon’s members will be required to wear masks indoors for the first time.
B. It will come into effect on Monday, in response to the request of corporate workers.
C. It implies the great impact of the Covid-19 variants on American economy.
D. It regulates that those who are not vaccinated should wear masks
6. Which of the following is TRUE according to paragraph 5 and 6?
A. Amazon had relaxed its mask requirement for uninfected workers.
B. All companies don’t require the workers to get vaccinated.
C. Amazon is still considering whether the testing should be stopped.
D. Few companies attach great significance to Covid-19.
7. What can we learn from the last paragraph?
A. After being criticized for its lack of protective equipment, Amazon took actions at once.
B. The demand for Amazon’s various services declined greatly during the pandemic.
C. The pandemic blocked the development of Amazon to some extent.
D. Amazon faced charges early on, for its lack of health and safety awareness

Search engines have changed the way we use the Internet, putting vast sources of information just a few clicks away. But Harvard professor of psychology Line Daniel Wegner’s recent research proves that websites and the Internet are changing much more than technology itself. They are changing the way our memories function. Wegner’s latest study shows that when people have access to search engines, they remember fewer facts and less information because they know they can rely on “search” as a readily available shortcut.
Wegner believes the new findings show that the Internet has become part of a transactive memory source, a method by which our brains divide information, which means you don’t have to remember everything in the world yourself. You just have to remember who knows it. Now computers and technology are becoming virtual extensions of our memory.
Wegner conducted several experiments to demonstrate the phenomenon, using various forms of memory recall to test reliance on computers. In one experiment, participants demonstrated that they were more likely to think of computer terms like “Yahoo” or “Google” after being asked a set of difficult trivia questions. In another experiment, participants typed some statements into a computer and they were told the statements would be saved in specific folders. Next, they were asked to recall the statements. Finally, they were given cues to the wording and asked to name the folders where the statements were stored. The participants proved better able to recall the folder locations than the statements themselves.
Wegner admits that questions remain about whether dependence on computers will affect memories negatively: “Nobody knows now what the effects of these tools are on logical thinking.” Students who have trouble remembering distinct facts, for example, may struggle to employ those facts in critical thinking. But he believes that the situation overall is beneficial, comparing dependence on computers to dependence on a mechanical hand or other prosthetic device.
And even though we may not be using our memories to recall distinct facts, we are still using them to consider where the facts are located and how to access them. “We still have to remember things,” Wegner explains. “We’re just remembering a different range of things.” He believes his study will lead to further research into understanding computer dependence, and looks forward to tracing the extent of human interdependence with the computer world — pinpointing the “movable dividing line between us and our computers in cyber networks.”
12. From the experiment, when asked to provide facts that are not familiar to them, people tend to ________.
A. think of specific information sources B. type into computer and remember them
C. recall them from their deep memories D. link the unfamiliar facts to their experiences
13. Which one can be an example of the transactive memory?
A. An actor organizes today’s schedule with his agent.
B. A student asks his teacher for today’s homework.
C. A husband relies on his wife to remember a relative’s birthday
D. A boss asks the staff about the performance of the previous month.
14. Which of the following can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A. Computer dependence affects our thinking capacities in other distinct fields.
B. Reliance on computers does not necessarily reduce human memory.
C. Computers have helped people to understand the memory system better.
D. Researches should be done to reveal the side effect of computer dependence.
15. Which of the following can serve as the best title?
A. Wegner’s Research Has Pinpointed The Dividing Line
B. Technological Networks Reshaping Our Brain Functions
C. Human’s Memory Capability Becoming Inevitably Weaker
D. Heavy Reliance On Computer For Storing More Information

A 2021 report from Habitat for Humanity International found that SDG 11.1 was actually regressing. We are seeing stagnation instead of progress toward the goal.
Governments must prioritize adequate housing, especially for those struggling to survive in today’s overcrowded settlements.___16___
Here are three steps that governments — and leaders in both the public and private sectors — can take to alleviate this growing housing crisis:
1. Prioritize land tenure (占有) security
Ensure residents of informal settlements have secure rights to the land they inhabit.
This has already happened on a large scale in countries such as Honduras, where civil society organizations and governments came together to form diverse commissions that developed policy recommendations around housing and land, negotiating approval of the recommendations and then monitoring their implementation. ___17___.
2.___18___
For residents of Freetown’s informal settlements and countless other cities, traditional avenues of housing finance are simply not accessible.___19___They exhibit similar characteristics to traditional mortgage loans, but their smaller size helps make them more accessible to families with lower incomes.
3. Strengthen climate-resilient housing
___20___.The public and private sectors can work together to support and invest in community start-ups specializing in low-cost, climate-resilient homes and locally sourced building materials. For example, an NGO based in Sierra Leone, Home Leone, has over the past 5 years been developing affordable housing utilizing low-cost construction techniques, and providing facilities to meet the basic needs of communities and an integrated approach to housing development for low-income communities.
We must act now to pave a stronger foundation for the more than 10 billion people expected to inhabit our cities by 2050. This starts with the urgent improvement of housing in rapidly expanding informal settlements worldwide. This long-overdue investment will more than pay for itself by building more prosperous and equitable communities for generations to come.
A. Expand finance for housing
B. Revolutionize mortgage loans
C. Informal settlements are highly vulnerable to the impacts of climate change
D. That means increasing financial commitments by an order of magnitude and making meaningful policy changes.
E. But the situation has changed a lot.
F. Through their technical assistance, more than 1 million people have improved access to their land rights
G. Microloans offer hope by providing individuals with the means to access capital for housing improvements and upgrades.

【19題詳解】
根據(jù)下文“They exhibit similar characteristics to traditional mortgage loans, but their smaller size helps make them more accessible to families with lower incomes.(它們表現(xiàn)出與傳統(tǒng)抵押貸款相似的特征,但較小的規(guī)模有助于低收入家庭更容易獲得這些貸款。)”可知此處上下文說的是與小額貸款有助于解決問題有關(guān)的話題,與G項(xiàng)“Microloans offer hope by providing individuals with the means to access capital for housing improvements and upgrades.(小額貸款為個(gè)人提供了獲得住房改善和升級資金的途徑,從而帶來了希望。)”表達(dá)的含義一致,故選G項(xiàng)。

It was a Sunday morning. Betty woke up earlier than usual. She couldn’t sleep any longer because she was so excited that her uncle Mark was taking her to the beach. She had always loved going surfing with her uncle. She put her swimming suit on and took her bag quickly that she had prepared the night before and went outside to wait. She jumped up and down with joy when she saw her uncle’s red jeep turn the corner down her street.
Uncle Mark got out of the car and helped Betty get in. “Are you ready?” he asked. “Yes!” replied Betty. Uncle Mark could see the excitement in her face. Suddenly he said seriously, “well, before we go, I have to let you know that a shark appeared recently where we’re going to surf today.” Scared and shocked, Betty couldn’t say a word. “Haha! I’m kidding you, “Uncle Mark burst out laughing. Betty laughed too. She knew Uncle Mark liked teasing others. “Let’s go and have some breakfast, I know just the place,” Uncle Mark said. They went to a breakfast shop and ate some tacos (炸玉米餅).
After breakfast the two of them went down to Pacific Beach and got their surfboards ready. “First you have to wax (打蠟) the bottom,” explained Uncle Mark. “I know. I’ve watched you do it before!” Betty said as she took the wax from Uncle Mark’s hand. It took about 15 minutes to wax the bottom of their boards. When Betty finished, Uncle Mark looked it over to make sure it was done well. “Nice job, Betty, you wax your board like a true surfer.”
Finally, they were ready to get into the water. They carried their boards down to the beach and went out into the water. Betty was overly excited and tried to rush to catch a wave. Predictably, she crashed and had to start over. Next was her uncle’s turn. He stood up on his first try and smoothly surfed the wave before jumping into the water. Betty cheered for her uncle’s perfect run.

【答案】范文
All of a sudden, Betty felt something touching the bottom of her foot. Failing to resist the impulse of curiosity, she lowered her glance. Within a second, her cheeks paled, and a chill swept over her body. A set of crimson and fierce eyes came into her sight. A shark, its tail shaking, its jaws clicking, made a leap from the sea and afterwards dove back into the water. Picturing the shark teeth tore meat off her leg, Betty felt a sinking in her heart, and her heart in her throat.
“Help! Help!” Betty screamed in horror. No reply. All was silence. The wave of the Pacific Ocean rose, tightening her throat, making it more and more hard to breathe. “God bless,” she prayed desperately with quivering lips. Before the consciousness was lost totally, a familiar voice broke the dead silence. It was Uncle Mark who swam close in a rush, grasped Betty firmly with one hand, and dragged her toward the beach. With the tide gently rolling to her feet, Betty, sitting in the sand felt the wave of relief swept across the beach.
