It’s time to sign up for Kids Bowl Free 2023!
Dates range from center to center and state to state. The center my family signed up for starts from May 3rd but I saw a couple of centers in Pennsylvania and South Carolina that had start dates in APRIL!
Be sure the kids are signed up for Kids Bowl Free 2023.
The Kids Bowl Free 2023 program is not specific to a certain chain of bowling alleys (保齡球場). You can find a participating center near you. Kids (under 15 years old) can get TWO free games EVERY DAY at a participating center. Most places will require a bowling shoe rental-not included in the program.
But wait! That’s not all!
You can also sign up teens and adults for a summer pass for $39.95. Up to 4 people get two games every day during the summer with the family pass so that the whole family can bowl every day!
USE CODE: HOT25 on the Family Pass page * to save 25%! Making it just $29.95!
If the code HOT25 doesn’t work, when it asks if you want to sign up for the Family Pass, find the tiny “No Thanks” button and click it. When you do that, you’ll be offered a discount code!
Shoe rental not included.
Save even more on your kids bowl free when you don’t have to rent shoes! Search Ebay for bowling shoes and get a great deal! I got us each a pair for this year and if we bowl 6 times our shoe cost will be less than if we rented shoes 6 times. And with our own shoes, we can go more often!

After working for almost a full-year interning (實習(xí)) for a dream company, my life came to an earth-shattering end as a result of a severe car accident that significantly influenced my ability to walk. I spent 6 months relearning how to use my legs that were surgically repaired.
During this terribly slow time period of my life, I reevaluated my purpose and motivation. Sure, I was happy using my skills to help brands grow their profit. At the same time, I was haunted by the sense that I was not contributing in a way that was truly meaningful. When I began casting about to find my true passion and calling, I realized that my heart, mind, and soul’s purpose lay in trying to bring systemic change to the failing program we call education.
I earned my Master’s Degree from Lipscomb University and dove right into an interesting environment. The vast majority of my students came from economically disadvantaged homes and many of them had experienced multiple Adverse Childhood Events (ACEs). 100% of my students were in the bottom 10% in the nation.
My students received individual learning plans in which they and their families enjoyed being able to close their gaps. My students developed in this community and the vast majority grew into the 99th percentile of NWEA’s Map Growth Assessment. I learned more about educational equity, providing safe spaces for kids to make mistakes and it showed me a lot about my ability to empathize (共情) and be a difference maker.
I am thankful to be a teacher because in a world where we hide behind Twitter and Facebook political commentary, there is a desperate need for advocates who strap on their boots and fight for equity in this nation. All children are worth fighting for. All children are capable. All children deserve to be loved, cherished and passionately motivated to be the best they can be.
24. How was the author affected by the car accident?
A. He lost interest in his job then. B. He was disabled permanently.
C. He couldn’t earn as much from work. D. His interning period had to be delayed.
25. What does the underlined word “haunted” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Troubled. B. Defended. C. Attracted. D. Tested.
26. What do we know about the author’s students?
A. They were all gifted in various fields.
B. They had been left behind educationally.
C. They had bad relations with their parents.
D. They differed greatly in economic backgrounds.
27. What did the author attach importance to in his teaching?
A. The role of social media platforms. B. The students’ political views.
C. The students’ individual circumstances. D. The response from the families.

New Caledonian crows are well-known for using different types of tools for preying (捕食) from tree holes and other hiding places. While they firmly hold their tools in the bill, they need to put them down to eat. This is when crows are at risk of losing their tools by accidentally dropping them or having them stolen by other crows.
In an earlier study, researchers in the UK had discovered that crows keep their tools safe when not needed, using one of two “safekeeping” strategies—they either securely hold them trapped underfoot, or temporarily put them into a nearby hole or behind bark. But are crows more careful when handling particularly valuable tools?
“Many of us will fuss (大驚小怪) about a brand-new phone, making sure it does not get scratched, dropped or lost. But we may handle an old phone with a cracked screen quite carelessly,” said lead author Barbara Klump from the Max Planck Institute of Animal Behavior, Germany.
Crows at one of the team’s long-term study sites use two different kinds of stick tools: complex hooked tools and basic non-hooked tools. The former are painstakingly crafted from a relatively scarce plant species, while the latter are simply twigs (細枝) sourced from the forest floor. “Hooked tools are not only more costly to obtain, but they are also much more efficient,” explained Barbara Klump. “Depending on the foraging (覓食) task, crows can get prey with these tools up to ten times faster than with non-hooked tools.”
In their new study, the researchers now discovered that New Caledonian crows are more likely to keep valuable hooked tools safe between uses than the more basic non-hooked tools. “It was exciting to see crows are just a bit more careful with tools that are more efficient and more costly to replace. This suggests that they have some conception of the relative value’ of different tool types,” noted study co-author James St Clair.
This is the first study to investigate how animals handle and store tools of different kinds, providing a new way to measure how much they value these objects.
28. Why are phones mentioned in paragraph 3?
A. To indicate the necessity of phones in our daily life.
B. To emphasize people’s attachment to their old devices.
C. To stress the similarity between humans and crows.
D. To show people’s improper attitude to old things.
29. What’s the main advantage of a hooked tool?
A. It can be gotten easily. B. It can be adjusted freely.
C. It can make crows’ foraging more productive. D. It can prevent crows from danger.
30. What excited the researchers about the New Caledonian crows?
A. Their secret hiding places. B. Their unusual eating habits.
C. Their creation of complex tools. D. Their treatment of valuable tools.
31. Which can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Crows Use Strategies to Gain Valuable Tools
B. Crows Learn to Use Special Tools for Preying
C. New Discovery of How Crows Make Tools
D. New Caledonian Crows Keep Favorite Tools Safer
D
The now world-famous Lumière brothers, Auguste Lumière and Louis Lumière, were born in Besan?on, eastern France, near the border with Switzerland. They grew up immersed in the dazzling potential of photography, pursuing the family passion for developing images.
Their father Charles-Antoine set up a small factory producing photographic plates, and the looming threat of bankruptcy (破產(chǎn)) in 1882 was just the sort of pressure needed to inspire the world’s greatest invention. It was these two boys who invented the machines necessary to automate their father’s plate production, known as the new photo plate “etiquettes bleue”, and saved the family business from sinking.
When their father eventually retired one decade later in 1892, the brothers decided to focus on creating moving pictures. The original cinématographe (電影機) was made by Léon Guillaume Bouly on 12 February 1892, but the brothers made their own more efficient version three years later on 13 February 1895.
One of their techniques for making film more efficient included film perforations (穿孔), which helped pass the film through the camera and projector with greater ease. The first-ever footage (片段) to be recorded using their new invention was recorded on 19 March 1895, a short film that showed workers leaving the Lumière factory in which the brothers worked.
The first public screening of their movies came a few months later in December 1895, and they used their invention of the cinématographe to show 10 movie-clips of about 50 seconds each.
Of course, there was Thomas Edison’s “peepshow” kinetoscope that existed before the French Lumière Brothers invented cinema. But the difference was, Edison’s “peepshow” did not allow simultaneous viewing, whereas the Lumière Brothers invented entertainment that could be enjoyed by the masses and all at once. And cinema has never been the same ever since.
32. Which of the following is credited to the Lumière Brothers?
A. The original idea of cinématographe.
B. The invention of photographic plates.
C. The invention of “peepshow” kinetoscope.
D. The automatic production of photographic plates.
33. What does the Lumière Brothers’s cinématographe feature?
A. Higher Efficiency. B. Originality. C. Automatic operation. D. Low cost.
34. What was the world’s first-ever film footage about?
A. A family party. B. Working staff. C. A violent battle. D. Moving objects.
35. What advantage did the Lumière Brothers’ device have over Thomas Edison’s?
A. It served a larger audience. B. It presented clearer pictures.
C. It produced louder sounds. D. It passed the film more easily.

In an era when our heads are always in our phones and time is a precious commodity, our relationships with our neighbors perhaps aren’t what they used to be. So, if you’ re going to be around your neighbors, here are some ways to make sure you’ re being a good one, according to etiquette (禮儀) experts.
36
According to the director of the Australian School of Etiquette, Zarife Hardy, do the thing so many of us seem to be avoiding these days: introduce yourself. “Talk to your neighbors. 37 ,” Hardy says, acknowledging is not only the right thing to do, but it can also work in your favor eventually. “If you find yourself solo parenting at any stage, you will be less frustrated by fighting siblings because you know there is outside help available.”
Be a good sport (講交情)
“ 38 ,” Hardy says. “Your new blower awaits you in the garage; you’ve tidied your driveway, paths and garden to your heart’s content. While you’re at it, clear your neighbor’s footpath. You have had a great vegetable season, and share your harvest with your neighbor.”
Personal space
39 . More than that, Hardy says it’s not appropriate for children or pets to run free on other people’s property without permission. “Make sure your children are familiar with these rules and make sure any pets don’t use their yard,” he says.
Keep the volume down
Hardy says keeping the volume down would “be the number-one neighbourly complaint”. “Loud footsteps, using the lawn mower before 9 a.m., talking loudly and pumping music are bad manners,” he says. “If you are going to have a party, let your neighbors know ahead of time and let them know what time the party will be finishing so they’ll know when to expect some quiet time. 40 .”
A. Get to know them
B. Don’t be a stranger
C. Never park your car on the grass
D. If it’s possible, you should always invite them
E. Proper etiquette would be to call before visiting
F. Treat your neighbors as you would have them treat you
G. The best tip for you is to chat or knock on your neighbor’s door

第二節(jié)(滿分25分)
閱讀下面材料,根據(jù)其內(nèi)容和所給段落開頭語續(xù)寫兩段,使之構(gòu)成一篇完整的短文。
The children’s journey began when they were flying with their mom from the village of Araracuara, to San Jose del Guaviare to visit their father. Their small plane had engine trouble, and crashed in the rainforest. Sadly, all three adults on the plane died, including the children’s mother.
This left the four children alone in the jungle. The oldest child was a 13-year-old girl. Next came a 9-year-old, a 4-year-old, and an 11-month-old baby. The children are members of the Indigenous Huitoto tribe (土著部落). The Huitotos live in the Amazon rainforest, so the children were familiar with some of the plants and fruits that could be found there.
At first, the children lived off flour made from plant roots. They had found the flour in the airplane ruins. When they ran out of flour, the children used their knowledge of the forest’s fruits and seeds to survive. Luckily, it was a time when many rainforest plants were producing fruits.
As soon as the plane went down, people started searching to see if anyone survived. After two weeks, the plane was found. The people searching found signs that the children might still be alive.
Rescue teams flew in helicopters and dropped boxes of food, hoping the children would find them. But they couldn’t see the ground because the forest was so thick. The helicopters even played a recorded message from the children’s grandmother, encouraging the kids to avoid moving around.
Over 150 soldiers were sent out with dogs to search on the ground. These teams left whistles around, hoping the children would find them and use them to make noise. Around 70 Indigenous volunteers also helped search. They saw all kinds of animals. However, what they didn’t spot were the kids, who were apparently scared by the soldiers and spent much of their time hiding from them.
注意:1.續(xù)寫詞數(shù)應(yīng)為150個左右;
2.請按如下格式在答題卡的相應(yīng)位置作答。
At different points in time, the rescue teams found signs of the children.

Getting Quality Sleep Is Important
For us students who are now at a critical stage of growing up, quality sleep provides both mental and physical benefits. It not only relaxes our mind after a whole day of busy study at school, but it helps us keep a clear mind so that we can be more energetic during the daytime.
Since I entered middle school, I have formed the habit of taking a nap after lunch, and by doing that I can have a clear mind and stay focused on the lessons in the afternoon. Besides, I never stay up too late at night.
For your health’s sake, I suggest you create a daily schedule for yourself and follow it strictly. I am sure it will be good for your study and health as well.
寫作 第二節(jié) (滿分25分)
One possible version;
At different points in time, the rescue teams found signs of the children. A bottle, a partly-eaten piece of fruit, and even a rough shelter made by the children. They called in more searchers, followed the trail left by the children, sped up the search and expanded the searching area. As the search progressed, more and more traces were found. All the searchers were excited and increasingly confident that the children were still alive. Despite the numerous searches, the children remained out of contact. However, the rescue teams never lost heart.
After more than a month, the searchers finally found the children. They were in a small clearing in the forest, aboutl5 kilometers from where the plane had crashed. The children were very weak, but they were alive. Everyone was extremely happy and relieved that the children were safe. The soldiers who found the children wrapped them in blankets and gave them drinks. A helicopter was used to lift the kids up and out of the rainforest. The story of the children’s survival has inspired many people. It has also shown how the knowledge and skills of Indigenous people can help in difficult times.
