I wanted a cat and I visited the American Humane Society in Ann Arbor, Michigan, looking for the perfect cat and began playing with several playful kittens through the cage opening.
A little black kitten I nearly ignored stuck his paw (爪子) through the cage, calling me to play. He was clearly interested in me, so I asked to hold him. Our connection was immediate. I adopted him, named him Aladdin, and brought him home. Over the next 16 years, Aladdin and I were inseparable. He was the gentlest and sweetest cat. But one night in late 2013, everything changed.
It was as if one day Aladdin was still acting like a kitten, and then the next day he was vomiting (嘔吐) frequently. I took him to the vet and sadly was told he had stomach cancer. A month later, Aladdin got worse. The vet said it was time to put him down. Heartbroken, I said my goodbyes as he went to sleep. Once I got back home, reality hit me hard. Usually, Aladdin was there to greet me at the door, demanding hugs and kisses. But he was gone, leaving a huge emptiness in my life and in my home. I couldn't catch my breath. I suffered from panic attacks that entire week.
About a week after losing Aladdin; my friend Amy called me. She had saved a cat and asked if I could come over and hold the kitten while she cleaned her cage. I unwillingly agreed. When I arrived, I picked up the kitten and held her in my arms. To our amazement, she didn't move once in the entire 30 minutes I held her. As I kept petting her, I knew I was going to adopt her.
And I was going to name her Fiona. Once I brought Fiona home, my panic attacks stopped.
To this day, six years later, having her near me is very comforting. A sense of calm comes over me when I hold her. Whenever I feel sad, I lay my head on her, and everything feels better.
24. What did the author say about Aladdin?
A. He was well trained. B. He ignored her at first.
C. He got along well with other cats. D. He felt closely connected to her.
25. What can we infer about the author from paragraph 3?

C. She was regretful about raising a cat. D. She acted like a careless pet owner.
26. How did the author first respond to Fiona?
A. Unexpectedly pleased. B. Unsurprisingly calm. C. Frightened. D. Unconcerned.
27. What is the main idea of the text?
A. Why I cannot live without cats. B. What I did to get a cat to like me.

We would like to take a look at cashew nuts. If you have been lucky enough to taste one, you will know just how delicious they are. Once you begin eating cashews, it's very difficult to stop.
Here's something you may not have known about cashew nuts until now. The cashew nut that you eat is not a nut at all. It' s the seed that grows inside a single nut found beneath a cashew apple from the cashew tree. The red or yellow cashew fruit does not contain any seeds. Technically, that means they are not actually a fruit - even though they look like one. They taste a little like mango with a bit of grapefruit. It is unlikely that you will ever see one outside of Brazil because its skin is very thin. They do not travel well. In Brazil, they are eaten raw, drunk as a juice or turned into a delicious jam (果醬).
The nut is very hard. You have to be very careful if you open it. It contains a poison that can badly burn your skin if you come into contact with it. To remove this, the nut has to be roasted at a high temperature for 20 minutes before it is opened. Once roasted, the nut is ready and the cashew is taken out. It has a thin skin around it. This is peeled off (剝掉) carefully to make sure the cashew is not broken. The cashew is then roasted once more in coconut oil for 5 minutes. Then it's ready to eat. What has just been described is a long process. This is why cashews are expensive.
Cashews are eaten all over the world. They are also popular ingredients in different styles of cooking, especially in Southeast Asia. Cashews can be found in nut butter, ice cream, cashew milk and also cheese spread! We are thankful to the Portuguese who discovered the cashew tree in Brazil. If it had not been for them, the Brazilians may have kept cashews all to themselves.
28. What is a disadvantage of a cashew fruit?
A. It is smelly. B. It is in limited use.
C. It is easily damaged. D. It is difficult to grow.
29. Why is the cashew nut heated at a high temperature?
A. To harden the nut. B. To let it taste good.
C. To make it easy to store. D. To get rid of the poison in if.
30. Which of the following can best describe the work mentioned in paragraph 3?
A. It is creative. B. It is effortless. C. It is interesting. D. It is demanding.
31. What does the last paragraph mainly talk about?
A. The popularity of cashews. B. The benefits of eating cashews.
C. The process of cooking cashews. D. The history of discovering cashews.

A recent research study suggests that learning music doesn't make you smarter.
For a while, there was an idea found on the Internet and in various magazines that suggested that babies could become smarter if they listened to Mozart, or to other classical music. Inspired, some parents bought classical CDs for their babies in the hope that this would boost their intelligence. But this so-called "Mozart Effect" has been challenged repeatedly.
But is taking music lessons surely different from just listening to music? Wouldn't taking music lessons make kids smarter? That' s exactly the question that many researchers over the years have tried to answer. Some of their studies concluded that it does, and some found that it doesn't. For example, one study showed that music education did not improve reading skills, while another one found a small effect of music on young children's ability to learn words.
The researchers of the new study, Giovanni Sala (Fujita Health University) and Fernand Gobet (London School of Economics), looked at the data behind 54 carefully selected studies, and after carefully comparing the data from different papers, they concluded that children who took music lessons did not score higher on tests that measure their intelligence or academic ability than kids that didn't learn music.
If music doesn't make you smarter, how does that explain other research that shows that music lessons help students' school performance? It seems like there is something about music lessons that makes students able to perform better in their other classes. That doesn't have to be intelligence, and it's likely not. Music lessons could have helped in different ways: They could have led to a change in homework habits, they could have increased confidence, or they could have improved social skills. And finally, they also mention that music education could still be very beneficial to students' performance in non-music subjects if the music is combined with these classes. So feel free to keep making music, and keep encouraging children to ]cam music.
32. What can we learn about the "Mozart Effect"?
A. It is most likely to be ineffective. B. It was first presented by Mozart.
C. It helps parents take good care of their children. D. It will draw more and more researchers' attention.
33. What does the example in paragraph 3 show?
A. Listening to music benefits kids a lot.
B. Whether music education suits all kids remains unknown,
C. Listening to music fails to help kids in language learning.
D. Whether taking music lessons makes kids smarter is controversial.
34. How did the researchers carry out the new study?
A. They did 54 small studies in all. B. They observed children in music classes.
C. They.examined plenty of previous research. D. They did a long-term survey of musical students.
35. What conclusion is made in the last paragraph?
A. Intelligence determines one' s school performance. B. Music lessons should be encouraged for children.
C. A student' s intelligence can be increased with effort. D. Students should avoid listening to music while studying.

Jessica and Cayla were two sisters, who loved each other very much. They were not only sisters, but they were best friends, too. They liked to eat, play, go to school and do everything together. Nothing could break them apart!
One day, there was a running race competition at school. Both Jessica and Cayla were very fast runners and they were sure they would win if they signed up for it. They were very excited to participate together. And there were other friends too, who were all going to run.
The judge blew the whistle… toooot!! Everyone started running. Jessica and Cayla were running as fast as they could. They were running so fast that they passed everyone in a very short time. The audience was cheering, “Look at the sisters. They are so fast, like lightening!” Hearing the cheers, they ran even faster. They barely looked at each other.
Suddenly Cayla hit a stone on the race track. She got hurt and fell down, with her leg bleeding. She called Jessica to stop and give her a hand. She groaned (呻吟) with pain. But Jessica wouldn’t stop or look. She guessed that Cayla just had a slight fall. She had only one thought on her mind. She had to win this race!
Jessica reached the finish line first. The judge announced, “You are the first, Jessica!” But, there was no applause from the crowd. Jessica was surprised. She had won but no one was clapping for her. She turned back to see if her sister Cayla was close behind her. But she was not there! Jessica was worried that something bad had happened.
