If yu’ve scrlled thrugh yur Facebk feed recently, yu may have nticed smething surprising: lts and lts f shrt vides.
What makes this “Reels” feature strange is that it is hugely addictive, which I knw quite well frm my wn persnal experience. Last Friday, I tk a break and hit n ne shrt clip f smene making dinner and, well, the next time I lked up it was 20 minutes later and the blank dcument n my cmputer mnitr was cnfirming t me that my wrk was still nt dne.
Hwever, as silly as it seems, Reels — is actually super imprtant, and is at the centre f a majr battle between the wrld’s largest tech firms. The frmat was first pineered by TikTk—the Chinese-wned vide app that has taken the wrld by strm since it was launched in 2016. Tday, TikTk has arund 23 millin UK users every mnth — including basically every persn yu knw under the age f 25. And that fact has made Facebk and its parent cmpany, Meta, very nervus indeed. The reasn Tik Tk has prven such a pwerful challenger t Facebk’s scial media dminance is almst entirely dwn t these srts f shrt-frm vides.
The frmat is almst perfectly ptimized t be as addictive as pssible: Tik Tk’s app shws yu a shrt-frm vide, and if yu dn’t like it, yu can simply swipe it away and anther ne will start playing instantly. And because it is prtrait, nt landscape, vides lk “right” when viewed n yur phne. What’s als smart is that TikTk’s algrithm (算法) picks vides fr yu based n what yu actually watch, and nt what yu say yu want.
Facebk isn’t the nly app trying t d what TikTk des s well. Instagram, which is wned by Facebk’s parent cmpany Meta, has integrated Reels even mre aggressively int its app. And even Ggle is nervus, launching its wn TikTk-style vide sectin f YuTube (which it wns) a cuple f years ag. As things stand, thugh TikTk currently maintains a healthy lead in the categry, bth YuTube and Facebk have deep pckets-s expect t see even mre Reels and Shrts ppping up in yur feed as this intense battle cntinues t rage. Yu wn’t be able t take yur eyes ff them.

Willful ignrance exists in large amunt in daily life. Peple regularly lk the ther way rather than examining the cnsequences f their actins. Despite plenty f scientific evidence fr climate change, fr instance, many peple still avid engaging with facts abut glbal warming.
We wanted t understand hw cmmn willful ignrance is and why peple engage in it. The verall balance tipped tward selfishness when participants had the ptin t avid infrmatin. Only 39 percent f peple in the ambiguus setting made the chice that ultimately benefited their partners — a significant drp frm 55 percent in the transparent cnditin.

Highlighting recent glbal achievements, such as healing the zne (臭氧) layer, can inspire peple t keep up the gd wrk rather than feeling like the battle is lst and that the situatin is hpeless.
In shrt we can encurage ne anther and urselves tward mre selfless and generus actins.
32. What causes peple t ignre the effect f their behavirs deliberately?
A. They want the biggest persnal benefits withut feeling ashamed.
B. They hld the belief that willful ignrance is scially acceptable.
C. They are unsure abut the results f their actins.
D. They always take thers’ benefits int cnsideratin.
33. What can be cncluded frm experiments mentined in the passage?
A. Peple in the ambiguus setting were mre aware f the impact f their decisins
B. Mre than half f the participants are selfish in the transparent cnditin.
C. All peple in bth settings chse t put their partners’ interests in the first place
D. Sme peple still increased the benefits f thers althugh they culd avid infrmatin
34. Which f the fllwing is the authr likely t agree with?
A. Highlighting the difficulties f zne layer healing inspires peple t keep up the gd wrk.
B. Paying less attentin t the mrality f decisins is helpful t decrease willful ignrance
C Having a sense f guilt enables peple t take glbal issues seriusly
D. Stressing the threats f willful ignrance cntributes t mre selfless and generus actins
35. In which clumn f a newspaper can we read the passage?
A. LiteratureB. TechnlgyC. Archaelgy.D. Psychlgy.
