【原文】W: Handing power tools over to young students could result in some disastrous situations. But if those tools are combined with effective supervision and teaching, the students can learn valuable new skills and might even find a new career path. One such program, in Washington, D.C., aims to teach woodworking and finished carpentry skills to teens and young adults. It includes a woodshop, completely housed inside a truck, that acts as a kind of “classroom on wheels”. The Mobile Woodshop program was started by the nonprofit Zenith Community Arts Foundation. Margery Goldberg, Zenith’s director, said the goal of the woodshop is “to get people jobs”. Joe Largess is a teacher at the woodshop. He said much of the class centers on teaching students “soft skills”. These are skills that are desirable in all jobs, such as teamwork, having a strong work ethic, being able to follow instructions and arriving to work on time. Students also learn basic skills like math and how to read a ruler. Ryan is a student at the mobile woodshop. Before entering the class, he had some experience working with wood and tools. “I wanted to give myself a chance to get better at it. That’s why I started the class,” Ryan said. Ryan said he sees another benefit to learning woodworking: “You can sell some of this stuff and make money for it.”
第二部分?閱讀(共兩節(jié),滿分50分)

The following small European villages will provide you with a chance to experience the beauty of nature and a sense of adventure, from climbing a mountain to taking a dive in the ocean.
Deià, Spain
Hidden between the towering Tramuntana Mountain and the blue Mediterranean, the village’s natural beauty inspires not just writers and painters, but adventure-seekers, too. From this peaceful village, cyclists can ride across this mountainous but bike-friendly region. After working up a sweat, they can go to the best beach, Cala Deià, in Spain. Its waters are perfect for giving the tired muscles a break with a relaxing dive.
Mürren, Switzerland
In Mürren, the fun starts before you arrive. This beautiful Swiss village sits on a Bernese Oberland mountain shelf so high that travelers must arrive by cable car. Like many mountain resort towns these days, Mürren offers year-round activities. Besides downhill skiing in winter, brave climbers can enjoy themselves from June to October, with or without a guide.
San Gimignano, Italy
In the Middle Age, wealthy families of this hill town went on a tower-building competition. At one point there were more than 70 towers, some of which were nearly 200 feet in height. Initially built as defenses in wars with neighboring villages, the towers became symbols of wealth and fame. Today, the village draws both history and wine lovers. Visitors can enjoy the famous white wine, Vernaccia di San Gimignano, at the tasting centers which overlook the surrounding grape hills.
Chipping Campden, England
Arguably the loveliest village in England, Chipping Campden isn’t just a photographer’s dream. It is also known for the annual Olympic Games in summer, a 400-year tradition that copies the Greek Olympics. It includes horseracing, coursing, jumping, backswords and country dancing. But the highlight is the wrestling that thankfully has never caught on anywhere else.
21.What can visitors do in Mürren?

As a reporter, I talk to strangers for a living and love the challenge of getting them to open up. Yet here’s a confession: I’ve been married for eight happy years, but until six months ago, I could be the stereotypical inattentive husband.
It’s not that my wife and I never had pleasant conversations. But more often than I care to admit, I was just going through the motions, nodding when I was supposed to. I was the guy who’d defensively snap (厲聲說), “Of course I did!” when my wife would ask, “JB, did you even hear what I just said?”
In January, I began to lose my voice repeatedly. Doctors told me I needed surgery, or else my throat would be permanently damaged. Total silence would be required for the first few weeks of my recovery.
Two hours after the surgery, my eyes filled with tears as my two-year-old son stood by me looking puzzled because I wouldn’t answer his questions. I wanted to talk but couldn’t.
But before I got home, I had settled into a Zen-like peace about my silence. Soon I noticed another “side effect”: As my wife talked to me to keep up my spirits, I wasn’t just hearing her; I was listening to her.
Over the next few weeks, I found myself unwilling to miss a word she said. I began to hear a sweetness in her voice that I hadn’t recalled for long. I found myself understanding her better on topics I’d previously dismissed as “things I just don’t get as a guy”.
I also realized my toddler (學(xué)步的兒童) wasn’t just chattering nonstop but that he often had surprisingly thoughtful things to say for his age.
Even while walking my dog in the woods near our home, I began hearing pleasant patterns in bird songs. The rustling leaves sounded crisper to me. Before my surgery, I’d have spent those walks on my phone.
After several months, I was fully recovered. Now conversation in our house is better, but not because I’m talking more. I’m just listening better and becoming less and less surprised that I like what I hear.

Madagascar’s extremely improbable wildlife may be thanks to dozens of dramatic oceanic journeys that would put Robinson Crusoe to shame, says a new research.
“It seems like a far-fetched idea that animals could survive moving across the sea,” says Matthew Borths, a researcher at Duke University. But a comparison of genetic data from modern Malagasy species with the fossil (化石) record of their ancestors from the African mainland has revealed that this is likely what happened for most land animals, according to the research, published in May in the journal Biological Reviews.
Animals from mainland Africa would have been trapped on large rafts (木筏) of vegetation and floated to Madagascar, where they eventually evolved (進(jìn)化) into the wildlife we know today. Some 95 percent of wildlife are endemic to the country, which means they live nowhere else in the world.
Scientists have three major theories to explain how land animals got to Madagascar: The species were there before Madagascar divided and became an island, they swam and/or rafted across from mainland Africa when currents flowed that way, or they crossed land bridges that might have existed at different periods.
In their study, Jason Ali, the study co-author, and Blair Hedges, a biologist at Temple University, pulled together a large amount of previously published research to test each of these possible origin stories.
The team compared the genes of 28 groups of land animals, including animals from modern-day Madagascar, with the genes of species on mainland Africa that are the closest, relatives. Based on this information, they calculated the likely time when the ancestor of each species group likely arrived in Madagascar, then evolved into something new.
28.What does the research find about the animals in Madagascar?
A.They come from mainland Africa. B.They are good at swimming.
C.They are the same as those in Asia. D.They tend to live on the coast.
29.What does the underlined word “endemic” mean in paragraph 3?
A.Friendly. B.Native. C.Unknown. D.Useful.
30.How did Jason Ali’s team conduct the study?
A.By collecting origin stories in the field. B.By observing wildlife in the forest.
C.By comparing the published data. D.By teaming up with the locals.
31.Which can be a suitable title for the text?
A.Why Is Madagascar’s Wildlife So Unique? B.When Did Animals Arrive in Madagascar?
C.How Did Scientists Study Fossils in Africa? D.What Makes Animals in Africa Evolve Slowly?

D
Desperately ill and seeking a miracle, David Bennett Sr. took the last bet on Jan. 7. when be became the first human to be successfully transplanted with the heart of a pig. “It creates the beat; it creates the pressure; it is his heart,” declared Bartley Griffith, director of the surgical team that performed the operation at the University of Maryland Medical Center.
Bennett, 57, held on through 60 tomorrows, far longer than any previous patient who’d received a heart from another species. His remarkable run offered new hope that such procedures, known as xenotransplantation (異種移植), could help relieve the shortage of replacement organs, saving thousands of lives each year.
The earliest attempts at xenotransplantation of organs, involving kidneys from rabbits, goats, and other animals, occurred in the early 20th century, decades before the first successful human-to-human transplants. Rejection, which occurs when the recipient’s body system recognizes the donor organ as a foreign object and attacks it, followed within hours or days. Results improved after some special drugs arrived in the 1960s, but most recipients still died after a few weeks. The record for a heart xenotransplant was set in 1983, when an infant named Baby Fae survived for 20 days with an organ from a baboon (狒狒).
In recent years, however, advances in gene editing have opened a new possibility: re-edit some genes in animals to provide user-friendly spare parts. Pigs could be ideal for this purpose, because they’re easy to raise and reach adult human size in months. Some biotech companies. including Revivicor, are investing heavily in the field. The donor pig was offered by Revivicor from a line of animals in which 10 genes had been re-edited to improve the heart’s condition. Beyond that, the pig was raised in isolation and tested regularly for viruses that could infect humans or damage the organ itself.
This medical breakthrough provided an alternative for the 20% of patients on the heart transplant waiting list who die while waiting or become too sick to be a good candidate.
32.What does the underlined word “run” in paragraph 2 refer to?
A.Donating his heart to a patient.
B.Performing the heart operation.
C.Living for 60 days after the operation.
D.Receiving a new heart from a pig.
33.Which aspect of xenotransplantation does paragraph 3 mainly focus on?
A.Its history. B.Its procedure. C.Its consequence. D.Its significance.
34.What makes pigs ideal for providing spare parts in xenotransplantation?
A.Their growth rate and health condition.
B.Their life pattern and resistance to viruses.
C.Their easiness of keeping and rapid growth.
D.Their investment value and natural qualities.
35.Why was Bennett’s operation regarded as a breakthrough?
A.It introduced new medications to prevent organ rejection.
B.It proved the potential for using organs from various animals.
C.It guaranteed a sufficient supply of donor pigs for transplants.
D.It offered a prospect of replacement organs through gene editing.

Helping Your Kids to Be Interested in Sports
Being active and moving is something that is so important for us all, especially for children. 36 However, some parents can feel shocked when they see that their child isn’t interested in sports. So how can you encourage them to have ago?
It is such a good idea to lead by example when you are a parent. This is true for a variety of aspects, but especially forgetting children involved in sport. 37 So you need to be someone who is interested and active, if you want any hope of them doing so too. If you lay on the couch all day then they will just learn to do that too.
38 Although they can choose who they want to support, seeing your enthusiasm for a particular player or team can be just what is needed to start their journey. You could look for a team uniform store to get them a sports shirt with their name on for example, as well as see the team play at one of their games. 39
If something is dull, it will be hard for children to be enthusiastic about it. This will make them resent(討厭) it, which is not a good thing for later in life. If they show particular skill and learn to play sport, then more practice and training can come in. 40 When they can enjoy what they do, they will only see it as something fun to do, rather than what we as adults might see it as, such as a chore to burn calories.
Whatever sport your child chooses to play, encourage them and make it fun, and then it will be something that they will want to carry on doing as they go about the rest of their lives.
A.They won’t be interested in sports if you’re not.
B.here are some other tips that you would share with them.
C.Share your enthusiasm and it will help to lighten a passion.
D.So think about ways that can get them to be active in the sports.
E.How active a child is will impact their overall health and learning.
F.Apart from leading by example, you could also share your favorite team.
G.However, the main message forgetting children into sport is to keep it fun.

Climate experts have warned about the many ways a warming planet can negatively affect human health. 41 global temperatures are predicted to increase by 1.5℃ by the 2030s, that risk is becoming increasingly real.
One long-held prediction that appears to be coming true — according to the results of a study recently published in Nature Scientific Reports — is how climate change might enhance 42 of bacteria that thrive and spread through warm sea waters and cause an infection with a particularly high 43 rate.
Vibrio vulnificus (創(chuàng)傷弧菌) flourishes in salty or brackish waters above 68℉. Infections are currently rare in the U.S., but that’s likely to change. Using 30 years of data on infections, scientists at the University of East Anglia in the U.K. found that Vibrio vulnificusis 44 from its historic Gulf Coast range, with more Northern states reporting infections as waters become warmer.
“We’re seeing the core 45 of infections extending to areas that traditionally have very few and very rare cases,” says Elizabeth Archer, a Ph.D.researcher and 46 author of the study. “But these areas are now coming into the main area of infections.”
Based on the latest data on how much the world’s water and air temperatures will rise, the scientists predict that by 2081, Vibrio vulnificus infections could reach every state along the U.S. East Coast. Currently, only about 80 cases are reported in the U.S. each year; by 2081, that could go up to over three-fold, the authors say.
Such a proliferation could have serious health consequences. Vibrio vulnificus kills approximately 20% of the healthy people it infects, and 50% of those with weakened immune systems. There is little evidence that antibiotics can 47 the infection, but doctors may prescribe them in some cases. People can get infected either by eating raw shellfish like oysters or by exposing small 48 to waters where the bacteria live, which can lead to serious skin infections.
Warming sea temperatures aren’t the only reasons behind the rise of Vibrio vulnificus. Hotter air also draws more people to the coasts and bays, bringing them into closer contact with the bacteria.
“The bacteria are part of the natural marine environment, so I don’t think we can 49 it from the environment,” says Archer. “It’s more about mitigating infections by increasing 50 of the risk.”
To alert people to the growing threat, 51 systems are needed to track when concentrations of bacteria start to rise, similar to currently available pollen and pollution alarm.
Vbrio vulnificus is so 52 to temperature changes that concentrations could bloom after even a day of warmer water, so consistent monitoring and alerts are critical, says Iain Lake, professor of environmental epidemiology at University of East Anglia and senior author of the paper.
Lake says the expansion of Vibrio vulnificus is concerning for public health since the bacteria are now invading waters closer to heavily 53 areas, such as New York and Philadelphia. “Everyone can get a Vibrio vulnificus infection,” he says. “But the more 54 there is between warmer waters and people, the more the bacteria can move into populations 55 the elderly and those with other health conditions, who are more vulnerable to infections.”

第二節(jié)(滿分25分)
閱讀下面材料,根據(jù)其內(nèi)容和所給段落開頭語續(xù)寫兩段,使之構(gòu)成一篇完整的短文。
I must admit, I haven’t always liked animals. In fact, I distrusted them greatly while growing up, and I still fear the ones I don’t know personally. What set my beliefs in stone was being attacked—not once but many times, including the summer after second grade when I was bitten by a rabbit. Then, when I was nine and riding my dirt bike down the road, a large dog charged me and tried to bite my ankle. After all those negative experiences, there was one thing I knew for sure: All creatures, great and small, were no friends of mine.
After college in California, I returned to live the single life in Las Vega. Then I met Lisa. In no time at all, we fell in love, married and moved into a new house. Despite my avoidance of animals, Lisa had a dog called Bailey. Bailey didn’t like me, but he tolerated my existence once he realized I wasn’t going anywhere.
Things changed as spring came. We welcomed a new member of our family: our son Evan. One evening Evan grabbed hold of the dog’s tail. The irritated dog paused and turned to look at his stuck tail but waited patiently until being released. Still the stories I’d heard of animals attacking babies worries me.
Then my worst fear occurred. I sat on the couch (沙發(fā)) reading after a long day while my wife worked at the dining-room table paying the bills. I saw Evan crawl across the family-room carpet as he made his way behind the couch. One minute, all was quiet and then Bailey entered the room and headed to where Evan had crawled. I nearly jumped out of my skin when I heard the dog start a fearful barking behind me.

1.續(xù)寫詞數(shù)應(yīng)為150左右;
2.請按如下格式在答題卡的相應(yīng)位置作答。
Throwing the book away, I rushed around the couch with great fear.

Having witnessed our dog killing a scorpion (蝎子) and saving my son, I was speechless.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】Throwing the book away, I rushed around the couch with great fear. The damn dog was barking directly at a huge scorpion in front of Evan’s chin. Evan lay on his belly, his head held high, frozen in fright as Bailey continued to bark at full volume mere inches away. The huge scorpion had its tail up and was prepared to strike. Without hesitation, the dog rushed to attack the scorpion and killed it with one bite. It was such a close call. Lisa scooped up our crying child.
Having witnessed our dog killing a scorpion (蝎子) and saving my son, I was speechless. Unconsciously, tears rolled down my cheek. Without worry and fear any longer, I knelt down and gave that brave dog some kisses. Bailey seemed to have fully understood my feeling, he lay in my arms to comfort me. It was a crucial moment which showed how both human and beast can live in harmony. I had a new belief in love. It is that some animals are human’s good friends indeed.
