Follow this four-day route, and you’ll lose yourself in the wizarding world of Harry Potter.
Day 1 Overview Edinburgh
It was in Scotland’s capital city that J. K. Rowling started to plot the adventures of Harry and his pals. With stoned streets, winding alleys and medieval(中世紀(jì)的) architecture, the city certainly has a few things in common with the settings from the books and films. She wrote the early chapters in various cafes around the city’s Old Towns.
Day 2 Overview travel to Fort William
Travel by train from Edinburgh to Glasgow. From there, you can take the West Highland Line to Fort William. This is a great way to see some famous spots from the window, including the mysterious Rannoch Moor, the place where Death Eaters board the train in the movie Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows.
Day 3 Overview all aboard the Hogwarts Express
Witness the sweeping cinematic scenery of the movie Harry Potter by booking a seat on the Jacobite Steam Train. Stop for lunch in Mallaig and then make the return journey to Fort William. Please be sure to book the steam train in advance, as it is very popular. By the way, it runs seasonally.
Day4 Overview lakes and glens(峽谷)
In the films, mysterious, misty landscapes frame the background of Harry’s tale, so it’s no surprise that the film producers chose the Highlands for many scenes. Spend a day wandering through some of these beautiful spots and feel the magical atmosphere.

Eleven years ago, Ms. Liivand moved to Miami, Florida, where she continued swimming in the ocean. In one training session, she nearly wound up swallowing (吞) some plastic that was floating in the sea.
That experience made her think of all the sea animals facing similar pollution every day. She decided she wanted to work to make people more aware of plastic pollution.
She began swimming with a special single swimming fin attached to both of her feet. This rubbery “monofin” (單魚鰭) allows her to swim by kicking both of her legs together. “Swimming without using my arms is similar to how dolphins swim,” says Ms. Liivand. She believes that swimming with a monofin “sends a bigger message”.
Ms. Liivand first set the world record for swimming with a monofin in 2019 off the coast of California. In 2020, she broke the record again in Miami, Florida. A year later, she set a new Guinness World Record again in Florida. For the last year, Ms. Livand has been getting up at 4 every day, putting on her monofin, and going swimming. To help improve her strength, she sometimes even pulled other people in the water.
On May 7, Ms. Liivand broke the record once more, this time swimming the length of a full marathon. It took her 11 hours and 54 seconds to swim 26. 2 miles. The water was rough, and she ran into a few problems, but she didn’t stop. “I got hurt by jellyfish,” she said, “And kept telling myself that it was not the time to cry.”
To keep her energy up, a friend followed her in a kayak (皮艇) and gave her food and water from time to time. Along the way, Ms. Liivand picked up all the trash she found and put it in the kayak. By the end of her marathon, the kayak held three bags full of trash.

For breeding (繁殖) birds, timing is everything. Most species have just a narrow window to get the food they need to feed chicks. Now, after analyzing data that span from 1975 to 2017, a science team suggests that as the climate warms, birds are not only breeding earlier, but their breeding windows are also narrowed—some by as many as 4 to 5 days.
On average, the beginnings and ends of the breeding periods are occurring earlier in the year. However, the ends are shifting back faster than the beginnings, resulting in an average breeding window that is 1.7 days shorter in 2017 than it was in 1975. During that same period, Finland’s average temperature rose by 0.8℃, suggesting many bird species are actively responding to changing temperatures, H?llfors, who led the team, says.
“It’s good for the species if it’s able to follow the optimum conditions as the climate changes,” she says. However, the shorter breeding windows mean more birds are breeding earlier in the season—a risky time for chicks’ survival, especially if the weather turns suddenly cold. In addition, because many late-season species are shifting their breeding windows up, that could mean more competition for food and nesting sites early on, leaving some chicks to go hungry.
Lucyna Halupka, an ecologist at the University of Wroclaw, calls the study “a very important paper” because it’s one of the few ways to measure the breeding period duration. For 2 decades, she says, many scientists studying birds and climate change have looked only at the earliest, median (中間的), or mean laying dates for specific groups of birds. However, she reminds that because the study is limited to Finland, the findings may not apply universally; future studies should examine how breeding seasons move in other regions where the effect of climate change is different. They should also try to determine how shifting breeding windows affect population sizes, she says.
28.What did the scientists find?
A.The weather in Finland becomes warmer.
B.It is becoming more difficult for birds to breed.
C.The birds in Finland spend fewer days breeding.
D.There isn’t enough food for some chicks in Finland.
根據(jù)第一段最后一句“Now, after analyzing data that span from 1975 to 2017, a science team suggests that as the climate warms, birds are not only breeding earlier, but their breeding windows are also narrowed—some by as many as 4 to 5 days.(現(xiàn)在,在分析了從1975年到2017年的數(shù)據(jù)后,一個科學(xué)團(tuán)隊認(rèn)為,隨著氣候變暖,鳥類不僅繁殖得更早,而且它們的繁殖窗口也變窄了——有些縮短了4到5天。)”以及第三段中“ However, the shorter breeding windows mean more birds are breeding earlier in the season”(然而,較短的繁殖期意味著更多的鳥在季節(jié)提前繁殖)描述可知,這些科學(xué)家發(fā)現(xiàn)受氣候變暖的影響,一些鳥類的繁殖期縮短了。故選C項。
29.What does the underlined word “optimum” in paragraph 3 mean?
A.Exact. B.Proper. C.Changeable. D.Dangerous.
根據(jù)第二段“During that same period, Finland’s average temperature rose by 0.8℃, suggesting many bird species are actively responding to changing temperatures, H?llfors, who led the team, says.(在同一時期,芬蘭的平均氣溫上升了0.8℃,這表明許多鳥類正在積極應(yīng)對溫度的變化,H?llfors領(lǐng)導(dǎo)了該團(tuán)隊。)”這里提到了氣溫上升這一溫度變化,這是一個不錯的繁殖條件,以及“‘It’s good for the species if it’s able to follow the optimum conditions as the climate changes,’ she says. However, the shorter breeding windows mean more birds are breeding earlier in the season—a risky time for chicks’ survival, especially if the weather turns suddenly cold.(如果它能夠隨著氣候變化而適應(yīng)optimum條件,這對物種來說是好事?!彼f。然而,更短的繁殖窗口意味著更多的鳥類在季節(jié)的早些時候繁殖,這對雛鳥的生存來說是一個危險的時間,尤其是在天氣突然變冷的時候。)”可知,however表示轉(zhuǎn)折,后面指出然而現(xiàn)實是鳥類繁殖窗口更短,前面說如果能適應(yīng)最佳條件,是好事。也就是“恰當(dāng)?shù)臈l件”。故選B項。
30.What is the significance of the study according to Lucyna?
A.It is carried out in a different way.
B.It is helpful for people to protect the birds.
C.It opens a window for people to learn about these birds.
D.It demonstrates the living situation of the birds on earth.
根據(jù)第四段首句中“because it’s one of the few ways to measure the breeding period duration(因為這是為數(shù)不多的衡量繁殖周期的方法之一)”可知,Lucyna Halupka把這項研究認(rèn)為是“非常重要的一頁”是因為這個小組是以不同的方式進(jìn)行了這項研究。 故選A項。
31.What is the best title for the text?
A.Scientists Revealed the Secrets of Birds’ Breeding
B.Scientists Take Steps to Protect the Birds in the Wild
C.Birds Play a Role in Fighting Against Global Warming
D.Birds’ Breeding Windows Are Affected by Global Warming
根據(jù)第一段“Now, after analyzing data that span from 1975 to 2017, a science team suggests that as the climate warms, birds are not only breeding earlier, but their breeding windows are also narrowed—some by as many as 4 to 5 days.(現(xiàn)在,在分析了從1975年到2017年的數(shù)據(jù)后,一個科學(xué)團(tuán)隊認(rèn)為,隨著氣候變暖,鳥類不僅繁殖得更早,而且它們的繁殖窗口也變窄了——有些縮短了4到5天。)”

Everything we know suggests that the universe is unusual. It is flatter, smoother, larger and emptier than a “typical” universe predicted by the known laws of physics. If we reached into a hat filled with pieces of paper, each with the specifications of a possible universe written on it, it is unlikely that we would get a universe anything like ours in one pick—or even a billion.
The challenge that cosmologists face is to make sense of this specialness. One approach to this question is inflation—the hypothesis (假設(shè)) that the early universe went through a stage of fast expansion. At first, inflation seemed to do the trick. A simple version of the idea gave correct predictions for the spectrum of fluctuations in the cosmic microwave background.
But a closer look shows that we have just moved the problem further back in time. To make inflation happen at all requires us to fine-tune the initial conditions of the universe. And unless inflation is highly tuned, it leads to a runaway process of universe creation. As a result, some cosmologists (宇宙學(xué)家) suggest that there is not one universe, but an infinite number, with a huge variety of properties: the multiverse. There are an infinite number of universes in the collection that are like our universe and an infinite number that are not. But the proportion of infinity to infinity is undefined, and can be made into anything the theorist wants. Thus the multiverse theory has difficulty making any firm predictions and threatens to take us out of the area of science.
These other universes are unobservable and because chance dictates the random distribution of properties across universes, suggesting the existence of a multiverse does not let us get to anything about our universe beyond what we already know. As attractive as the idea may seem, it is basically a sleight of hand, which turns an explanatory failure into an apparent explanatory success. The success is empty because anything that might be observed about our universe could be explained as something that must, by chance, happen somewhere in the multiverse.
We started out trying to explain why the universe is so special, and we end up being asked to believe that our universe is one of an infinite number of universes with random properties. This makes me suspect that there is a basic but unexamined assumption about the laws of nature that must be overturned.
Cosmology has new questions to answer. Not just what are the laws, but why are these laws the laws? How were they chosen? We can’t just hypothesise what the initial conditions were at the big bang, we need to explain those initial conditions. Thus we are in the position of a computer program asked to explain its inputs. It is clear that if we are to get anywhere, we need to invent new methods, and perhaps new kinds of laws, to gain a scientific description of the universe as a whole.

And unless inflation is highly tuned, it leads to a runaway process of universe creation.”(要使膨脹發(fā)生,需要我們對宇宙的初始條件進(jìn)行微調(diào)。
34.Which word in the passage is similar in meaning to the phrase “sleight of hand” (paragraph 4)?
A.process B.prediction C.trick D.infinity
根據(jù)畫線短語句中“which turns an explanatory failure into an apparent explanatory success”(這將解釋性失敗轉(zhuǎn)化為明顯的解釋性成功)和下文“The success is empty because anything that might be observed about our universe could be explained as something that must, by chance, happen somewhere in the multiverse.”(成功是空洞的,因為我們宇宙中可能觀察到的任何東西都可以解釋為在多元宇宙中偶然發(fā)生的事情。)
35.It can be inferred from the passage that the writer________.
A.believes the idea of the multiverse will help us to understand our universe better
B.a(chǎn)rgues there is a fixed proportion of universes like ours to those unlike ours
C.holds computer programs can work better than humans in cosmology
D.thinks some laws of nature that we take for granted may be false
根據(jù)第一段關(guān)鍵句“It is flatter, smoother, larger and emptier than a “typical” universe predicted by the known laws of physics.”(它比已知的物理定律所預(yù)測的“典型”宇宙更平坦、更光滑、更大、更空洞。)和倒數(shù)第二段關(guān)鍵句“This makes me suspect that there is a basic but unexamined assumption about the laws of nature that must be overturned.”(這讓我懷疑,關(guān)于自然法則,有一個基本但未經(jīng)檢驗的假設(shè)必須被推翻。)

Stronger family connections
During lockdown, families created bonds that are likely to remain strong. Since you’re home anyway, there’s no excuse not to have dinner together. Families are also returning to classic activities like movie nights and outdoor nature adventures. They give you opportunities to create a lot of openings for connection on a deeper and more meaningful level. ____39____
____40____
This time of suffering and death brought a recognition that life is something to be cherished and not taken for granted. COVID has created a loss on so many levels that it has forced us to look deeply at what we have been doing daily and why it matters. This active seeking of insight and answers has caused many individuals to be grateful for what they have.
A.More planning for future life.
B.More appreciation and gratitude for life.
C.This has been missing in many homes since smartphones entered the picture.
D.This will forever change the workplace, with offices taking a much smaller role.
E.The improvement in air quality was obvious, but it was also, sadly, not lasting.

根據(jù)下文的“This time of suffering and death brought a recognition that life is something to be cherished and not taken for granted.(這段痛苦和死亡的時光讓人們認(rèn)識到,生命是值得珍惜的,而不是理所當(dāng)然的)”可知,這一段主要在講疫情讓我們重新認(rèn)識生活,珍惜當(dāng)下。B. More appreciation and gratitude for life.

that引導(dǎo)的定語從句中已有謂語動詞pays且無連詞,故空處應(yīng)用非謂語動詞,邏輯主語culture和date back to之間為主動關(guān)系,應(yīng)用現(xiàn)在分詞作后置定語,修飾Chinese culture。故填dating。
故填With。
故填its。
故填that。

Since the beginning of this school year, Josette Duran, coach of the local school girls’ volleyball team, has kept an unusual morning routine at the request of her son, Dylan.
Every day, she packs him a lunch of two sandwiches, two bags of chips, two drinks, and two servings of fruit. At first, Duran thought her son had perhaps hit another growth spurt (短時激增) and needed double the nutrition. She finally asked him if he was getting enough to eat and received a surprising answer about why Dylan needed the extra food. “There are some children lacking food at school. But it’s for Johnson alone. He only eats a fruit cup for lunch.”
It turned out that Dylan had befriended a classmate, Johnson, whose family was tightening their belts. Johnson’s single mother had recently lost her job and was very low on cash, so she could no longer afford to buy school lunches. After learning this, Duran was even more eager to help Johnson out and his mother because she herself could empathize (產(chǎn)生共鳴) with their situation. That hit home to her because a few years ago, she and her son were homeless.
Her mind wandered back to the miserable scene when she was living in her car and she was washing her son in bathrooms. And to make things worse, they didn’t have sufficient food. Now that they had overcome their hardship and were in a stable place, Duran wanted nothing more than to reach out and help others in need. She even left encouraging notes in the lunches for both boys.
Duran shared the incident in an inspiring Facebook post in which she talked about how proud she was of her son’s heart and how kind he was for doing that for another person. The efforts made by Duran who was by no means well off, got noticed by her players. A plan was under discussion to help their coach. Meanwhile, Johnson’s mother also learned of Duran’s generosity, and she called Duran up and offered to pay her back in person.
注意:1. 續(xù)寫詞數(shù)應(yīng)為150字左右;

The next day, they met on the campus of Duran’s school. After she gave Duran a grateful and affectionate hug, Johnson’s mother took out an envelope containing the money she borrowed. Hardly had Duran caught sight of it when she shook her head, saying no in a determined way. “I don’t think I did anything special,” Duran explained sincerely. “I just think I did what a human being is supposed to do.” Actually, the kindness and sympathy didn’t stop there. Duran’s team raised $400 to give to her to cover the cost of all the extra lunches she had made out of her own pocket.
However, Duran refused to keep the money raised especially for her. Instead, she donated it to the cafeteria at her son’s school without a second thought. The money was enough to pay back the past due accounts of all her son’s poor fellow students who bought school lunch. “Now everyone can eat,” Duran said with a shining smile, proud that it all started with her 14-year-old son’s close observation of someone other than himself—someone he could give a helping hand to, using a packed lunch made with lots of love.
