My parents ran the Pagonis restaurant, a small eatery in Charleroi, Pennsylvania, and my first real job, when I was six years old, was shining diners’ shoes. My duties increased as I grew older. By the age of ten I was clearing tables and working as the janitor(清潔工). Dad beamed when he told me that I was the best “mop guy” he’d ever had.
Working in the restaurant was a source of great pride because I was pitching in for the good of the whole family. But my father made it clear. I had to meet certain standards to be part of the team. I had to be responsible, hard-working and polite to the customers.
Except for the shoeshine job, I was never paid for any work I did at the restaurant. One day I made the mistake of telling Dad I thought he ‘should give me $10 a week. He said, “Okay, then how about you paying me for the three meals a day you eat here? And for the times you bring in your buddies for free sodas?” He figured I owed him about $40 a week. This taught me that when you negotiate, you’d better know the other side’s arguments as well as your own.
I remember coming home to Charleroi after being away in the Army about two years. I had just been promoted to captain and was full of pride as I walked into my parents’ restaurant. The first thing Dad said was, “It’s the janitor’s day off. How about you cleaning up tonight?”“I can’t believe this!” I thought. “I’m an officer in the United States Army!” But it didn’t matter. As far as Dad was concerned, I was just another member of the team. I reached for the mop.
Working for Dad had taught me that loyalty to a team comes first. It doesn’t matter whether that team is involved in a family restaurant or in the Army.

A.Responsibility and generosity.

Li Jian, aged 61, is a senior lab scientist at the Chengdu Institute of Biology under the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and has dedicated himself to scientific sketching (速寫) in the area of animal and plant taxonomy (動(dòng)植物分類學(xué)). Over the past 40-plus years, he has sketched thousands of animal and plant drawings with a scientific attitude and superb skills, presenting to readers more than 730 species on the planet.
Over decades of work, Li has developed a particularly keen eye that helps him identify even the tiniest features of animals and plants. “It is impossible for an animal to arrange every part of its body in the way we want it to be so that we can take a clear picture of it,” Li said, explaining the necessity of scientific sketching in research work. “Different from works of art, my drawings require a high level of scientific rigor (嚴(yán)謹(jǐn)),” he said.
In animal and plant taxonomy, species are often identified through tiny features. Take frogs, for example. Some have long fingers, while others have short ones. Some have fingers that are unwebbed, some partially webbed, and others fully webbed. The tip of their fingers can be pointed or round, and with or without long narrow cuts. “When I sketch, I must sketch accurately. Sometimes, I need to study the structure of my subject under a microscope before getting down to draw,” he said.
Usually, it took Li about ten days to draw a palm-sized animal. For complicated animals like snakes covered in scales, it would take him more than half a month. A big obstacle Li encountered in his work was the fading of the color in samples as a result of long-time immersion in chemicals. In this case, he would need to rely on known morphological (形態(tài)學(xué)的) characteristics of the samples and text descriptions to make his sketches more accurate.
“With the assistance of Li’s large number of high-quality drawings, China’s illustrated scientific publications rank among the best in the world,” said Fei Liang, a famous Chinese zoologist.

A.Sketching with A Scientific Touch.
B.The Advantages of Sketching Accurately.

I always had the preference to take on more than I should when I was young. At times, I wanted to prove to myself that I could handle it. At other times, my purpose was to please someone and gain recognition for my efforts. Sometimes this led to stress or frustration.
When I was an IT manager after college graduation I was assigned to work with a wealthy customer and be a go-between (中間人)for my company. I took on the assignment happily, thinking that this might be my time to shine. However, the customer’s demands proved to be more than I could do with. And the company chose to stand by the customer and try to meet his unreasonable requirements rather than stick to what we had originally offered in the contract. As you can imagine, this led to a lot of unexpected problems and arguing with some of the staff who refused to do anything outside their scope (范圍) of work. I remember walking into my office one morning, opening my laptop and staring at the blank screen for long, thinking to myself: What should I do? That was a difficult time in my life and then I finally had to give up my first job and left that company sadly.
Perhaps, I thought then, I could find the job that didn’t involve dealing with difficult people and difficult situations. But later I realized: Is this possible in our modern world? No, it is impossible. Now, I know, I shouldn’t run away from the challenges I faced in life: I had to learn how to deal with them. I regret not persevering ( 堅(jiān) 持 ) in my job. We should train ourselves to look at things from a positive point of view, because that is far better than being trapped in the bad circle depression. I’ve come to see that when faced with difficulties, I should not give up, but persevere.
32.Why did the author take the work assigned to him happily?
A.He wanted to please the boss.
B.The work was very easy for him to do.
C.He failed to find a job many times before.
D.He thought it was time to prove his ability.
33.What does the underlined word “this” in the second paragraph mean?
A.Arguing with some of the staff.
B.Meeting the customer’s unreasonable requirements.
C.Accepting the assignment without hesitation.
D.Sticking to what had been originally offered in the contract.
34.What made the author leave his first job?
A.The depressing job situation. B.The low payment.
C.His lack of ability. D.A better job waiting for him.
35.What’s the best title of the text?
A.Running away from challenges. B.Persevering instead of giving up.
C.Refusing to argue with customers. D.Leaning to take on more than one can.
Make Your Application (申請表) Stand Out
Colleges and universities in the US receive thousands of applications every year from within the US and from countries all around the world. 36 How can you make yourself more memorable among these students?
Realize that “recommended” equals “required”.
The very first thing any applicant to a college should realize is that it is a competitive process. 37 In fact, certain parts may even be presented that way in university application materials — but the reality is that anything that the university presents as “optional” or “recommended” is usually seen as “required” in the minds of admission officers.
Don’t hesitate to send in extra material.
While it used to be the case that universities would make it very clear that they would not accept extra materials, that is no longer true in most cases, and in many cases, universities will accept all kinds of materials. 38 — but it could make the difference when you are on the borderline.
39
During school breaks, make sure that you are doing something that shows your academic curiosity, your initiative, and your willingness to work hard. Bonus points if your activity produces something that could be easily understood by admission offices, and if, this activity is something you’ve been doing for two or more years.
Be eager and focus on quality communication.
40 Answer emails without delay; send thank-you letters; and ask good and thoughtful questions. Language that might be OK when messaging your friends is certainly not the right tone when communicating with admission officers. It is likely that all of your emails go into your admission file, so you will make sure that all of it will be able to stand close examination by the admission committee.
A.One might think of many parts of the application as optional.
B.You are expected to present yourself thoroughly in the process.
C.Use your extra time wisely.
D.Communicating well will generally be to your benefit.
E.But how can you make yours stand out from the pile?
F.Make sure the language you use is formal and careful.
G.Extra materials won’t suddenly make you competitive.

In the West we are familiar with ballets like Swan Lake. But there’s another classical dance form with a long history 56 has only recently burst onto the world scene. It is called Chinese classical dance.

67.閱讀下面材料,根據(jù)其內(nèi)容和所給段落開頭語續(xù)寫兩段,使之構(gòu)成一篇完整的短文。
My dad is a truck driver, and when I was little, he was gone most of the time, delivering wire and other livestock(牲畜)supplies around the Midwest. So my mom was almost like a single mother. We lived in a small house in Brighton, Colorado, where we had a big yard with plenty of room for our five dogs and two cats to run around. We moved there on my third birthday. My first memory is our neighbor Arlene handing me strawberries from her garden through a hole in the chain-link fence. She and her husband, Bill, lived next door.
Arlene spent a lot of time working in the garden, and I was always talking to her from our yard. I was a chatter-box(喋喋不休). I think what drew me to Arlene and Bill is that they never got tired of listening to me. I also think Arlene saw a lot of herself in me-we were both lonely and anxious-and that may be why she always took the time to listen to me. Bill too. It was a wonderful connection.
One day, my parents asked Bill and Arlene whether they'd watch me while they went out. This worked well for everyone, so it became a somewhat monthly occurrence. Arlene and Bill didn't have kids. They had a spare room in their house, which became my room. I had boxes of toys and books in that room.
Arlene and I would do crafts together. We were always putting tiny decorations on things. Bill taught me how to ride a bike and later how to drive the lawn tractor(割草機(jī))and eventually a car.
When I was about five, I had an idea. My parents were watching TV when I spit it out, "What if I adopted Bill and Arlene as my grandparents?" My parents said I could go over and ask them for myself.
注意:
1. 續(xù)寫詞數(shù)應(yīng)為150左右;

M: I’m thinking about moving out of my place.
W: How come? Is it far from your workplace?
M: No. With three kids growing up and reaching school age, my house is too small.
2.A
W: Fill her up, please.
M: With pleasure, madam. Would you like me to take a look at the engine?
W: No thanks. How much do I owe you?
M: 3 pounds, please.
3.B
M: Hi, can I speak with Mr. Johnson, please?
W: He’s out with our son. He’ll be back later on tonight. Can I take a message?
4.A
W: Excuse me. Could you please take a picture of me with this camera?
M: No problem. Do I have to focus it?
W: No, all you have to do is point and press the button.
M: All right. Say “Cheese”.
5.A
W: I want to sell this old refrigerator. How much do you think I can get for it? I bought it for $800 five years ago.??It works really well, except for the broken shelf.
M: If the shelf weren’t broken, I’d say you could get $300. But you’ll probably only get about $150.
6.C 7.A
W: So are you still playing football, Tim?
M: No. I got knocked out last week on the field and was in hospital for a week.
W: Really! I didn’t know.
M: Yeah! I am not allowed on the field again for three months. But I’m thinking of dropping out of the team anyway.
W: Yeah? That’s a shame. Well, guess what? I’ve been getting back to the gym for two months. I’m going to take part in the City to Surf Marathon in May.
M: Ha! I should join you! I think I’ll be all right by then. How often do you work out?
8.A 9.B 10.C
W: Ted, have you found work yet?
M: No. It doesn't seem to be easy.
W: I'm not surprised. Many graduates are looking for work now. By the way, are you interested in house-sitting?
M: House-sitting? I haven't heard about it before. What do I have to do if I take such a job?
W: You just help take care of the house, like taking care of the yard and feeding the pets.
M: It seems easy. So do you know such a job?
W: Yes. The Browns are going away for a holiday for a month. They're going to travel in Asia. They need someone to take care of their house while they're away.
M: That's great. I want to give it a try.
W: Then you can call Mr Brown and ask him about it.
M: I'll do that immediately.
W: Good.

W: Yes, I am. How did you know?
M: David told me you had a special birthday coming up.
W: Oh...yeah, that’s right. Next week will be my golden birthday.
M: What does that mean?
W: A golden birthday is when one turns the age of their birth date. For example, I was born on December 29th and it’s my golden birthday this year.
M: Interesting. I was born on June 26. So my golden birthday would have been two years ago. I assume you got big plans then.
W: Actually yes. David is planning a surprise holiday for the two of us next week. I’m dying to know what kind of trip he has planned.
M: You know nothing at all?
W: No. Anyway, I must say I think he’s been having even more fun keeping the secret from me in the past few weeks.
M: I’m sure both of you will have a fantastic time. Happy golden birthday!

M: Let me look at the schedule... I’m already working from twelve to eight this Friday.
W: Me too. It’s the next morning’s eight-to-four shift I’m talking about.
M: So I would have to work Friday night and then again on Saturday morning?
W: Yeah. I know it is a lot to ask, but there’s no one else that can do it. If you want, I can take your Sunday nine-to-five. That way you can have Sunday off instead.
M: I don’t know. I need the work...
W: How about if I give you fifty dollars?
M: You don’t have to do that. I’ll do it. But the next time I need someone to cover one of my shifts, you’ll be the first person I’ll ask. Deal?
W: Deal.
18.B 19.C 20.B
W: I find that many students have already got pretty good study habits. Unless they have basic skill problems in areas like reading and math, they actually have the ability to take notes effectively, manage their time, and so on. So, what gets in the way of effective performance in the classroom? I believe that “anxiety” is the key factor. Many students put themselves down by believing that they are “stupid” and “ineffective”, especially compared with their classmates. These feelings of failure can lead to anxiety that “blocks” successful performance in the classroom—especially on tests. I have personally experienced this upset feeling and kicked myself later for making those serious mistakes when anxiety gets in the way. To overcome anxiety, I recommend the following. First, gain temporary control of your anxiety by practicing relaxation techniques during especially anxious times. Deep breathing combined with muscular tensing and relaxing can be helpful. Besides, work on feeling better about yourself. Try replacing negative thinking with positive thoughts. Praise yourself once in a while and forgive yourself for mistakes. Of course, reading books, such as David Burns’ Feeling Good, can also improve your feelings of self-worth. In general, try being your own best friend!

34.推理判斷題。根據(jù)第二段最后一句That was a difficult time in my life and then I finally had to give up my first job and left that company sadly.(那是我人生中最困難的一段時(shí)間,最后我不得不放棄我的第一份工作,遺憾地離開了那家公司。)和第三段第一句Perhaps, I thought then, I could find the job that didn’t involve dealing with difficult people and difficult situations.(那時(shí)我想,也許我能找到一份不需要和難相處的人打交道、不需要面對困難情況的工作。) 故選A項(xiàng)。

67.The next day, I knocked on Bill and Arlene's door. In an instant, they opened the door. I sat down in his living room, and asked, Can I adopt you as my grandpa?” Bill was first a bit confused by my strange question, but then he agreed happily. He hugged me with tears sparkling in his misty eyes. Just as Bill previously said it took a certificate to prove an important thing, we both signed the adoption certificate. At that time, I felt my connection with them strengthened. After hanging the certificate on the wall, Bill promised to teach me to drive the lawn tractor the next morning and I was really expecting the time to come. That night, I even couldn’t fall asleep.
From the day I adopted them, I called Bill and Arlene Grandpa and Grandma. The next morning, while learning to drive the lawn tractor with a snowplow, I accidentally plowed down our chainlink fence. I was frightened and tried to drive back the lawn tractor but it just didn’t work. “Easy, easy.” comforted Bob. He helped me move off the big machine. “Now it seemed that you did make the hole bigger.” joked my new grandpa. My parents went out at that time on hearing the big noise. They were shocked at first, but to my big surprise, my mom
suggested,“Why not remove the fence so that you could play with your grandpa more conveniently !” All of us agreed. Now, with two gardens connected, we would never feel lonely again. How important love was!
