Sonia Denoncourt is one of the most successful celebrities in the world of women’s soccer. She made her name doing what many still think of as a “man’s job” ---refereeing(裁判) soccer matches.
The Canadian began her career as a referee in 1978, at the age of 14. She worked her way up, and in 1994, became the first female international FIFA referee. Sonia was the first woman to referee a top men’s professional game, in EL Salvador in 1996. A year later, she became the first female to referee a men’s first division game (甲級隊(duì)) in Brazil. She has refereed at thousands of games at all levels, including over 100 international games, three World Cups, and two Olympic Games.
Her goal has always been to encourage more young women to become involved in the game. She accepts that it can be difficult, but she is sure that progress is possible. “I became a top referee and I’m from Canada, which is not a huge footballing nation,” she said. “So if I can do it, anyone can. And I wouldn’t change anything about my life because my career has given me excellent opportunities.”
In 1994, there were only four female referees on FIFA’s list. In 2008, this figure had risen to552---over 18 percent of the 3,000 listed FIFA referees and assistants. She is now Head of FIFA Women’s refereeing and continues to promote the role of women in soccer. However, there is still a long way to go in the battle for equality in the game.
It is still very unusual to see a female referee at the top international tournaments. Some people say this is because the women referees aren’t fit enough to work at the highest level. But for Sonia, this is simply an excuse to hide the widespread opposition to women doing what is considered a “man’s job”. “It’s a social thing,” she says. “In some countries women in positions of authority are just not accepted.” Even Sonia admits, “Football is still a man’s world.” However, things are changing, thanks to pioneering women like Sonia.
24. Which of the following can best describe Sonia Denoncourt?
A. Strong and patient.
B. Tough and generous.
C. Determined and committed.
D. Strict but humorous.
25. What can we learn from paragraph 4 about Sonia?

B. She has had a great impact on women’s refereeing.
C. She has won the battle in competing with male referees.
D. She has already considered herself as a leading referee.
26. What made women have difficulty in working as referees according to Sonia?
A. Being unfit.
B. A lack of experience.

D. Deep-rooted opposition to women.
27. What is the best title for the text?
A. A Woman Doing a Man’s Job.
B. A Woman Having Her Dream.
C. A Woman Bringing about Changes.
D. A Woman Involved in International Games.

Crossing your legs is an extremely common habit; most people don’t even notice that they’re doing it when they sit down. While you may find it comfortable to sit with one knee crossed over the other, it might be causing health problems that you are not aware of.
A study published in Blood Pressure Monitoring stated that sitting with your legs crossed can increase your blood pressure. The reason for this is that the blood in your legs has to work against gravity to be pumped back to your heart and that crossing one leg over the other increases resistance, making it even harder for the blood to circulate. This causes your body to increase your blood pressure to push the blood back to the heart. You won’t feel any immediate effects, but repeated, drawn-out increases in blood pressure can cause long-term health issues. So, planning to sit for a long period of time? Don’t keep your legs crossed.
Crossing your legs at the knee can also cause pressure on the major nerve in your leg that passes just below your knee and along the outside of your leg, explains Richard Graves, a medical expert. This pressure can cause numbness and temporary paralysis (麻痹) of some of the muscles in your foot and leg, preventing you from being able to raise your ankle—what we know as that “pins and needles” sensation. While the feeling of discomfort may only last a minute or two, repeatedly crossing your legs until they feel numb can cause permanent nerve damage.
So next time you sit down, try to get yourself in the habit of sitting with both of your feet on the floor. Not only will it help your posture and stability, but it will also save your health in the long run.
28. What can we learn about crossing one’s legs?
A. It is a very bad social habit.
B. It can do harm to people’ s health.
C. It is usually practiced deliberately.
D. It can make others feel uncomfortable.
29. According to the study, sitting with your legs crossed can______.
A. resist gravity effectively
B. lead to heart attacks easily
C. affect your blood pressure
D. improve the function of legs
30. In the third paragraph “pins and needles” probably means______.
A. serious muscle injuries
B. being a little nervous
C. slight sharp pains
D. being highly flexible
31.What is the main purpose of the text?
A. To give readers some advice.
B. To compare common habits.
C. To introduce research methods.
D. To evaluate effects of an experiment.

We can text WhatsApp, Facebook message and Snapchat---but are we losing the convenience of the phone conversation? Who has time to chat when you can spend hours on WhatsApp?
Most of my phone calls are less than a minute long. If I unintentionally hit answer instead of pressing the ignore button, I usually say, “Hold on, I’ll call you back,” before quickly typing out a “what’s up?” text. My list of recent phone calls is limited to four people and unless we live together, are related, or dating, there’s very little chance that you’ll be added to that list.
It seems I’m not the only who’s abandoning the phone call. The average adult spends more time on media or communication per day than on sleeping, but among all that communication, the phone call is the medium that’s falling.
So why has the phone call fallen out of favor? Many messaging apps seem to have created a grade of communication, so that the phone call is no longer the standard way of conversing long distance, but a relatively intimate(親密的)thing.
Rachel, 24, says that she used to speak to all her girlfriends on the phone but now only calls a few. “I rarely even speak to good friends on the phone and if they call me I’m like, ‘Hello, is something wrong?’,” says Rachel. “If I do a phone call it feels really official, like it’s a big deal.”
Instead of taking the time to ring a friend and catch up, it now seems easier to send a short message. And unless you’re very close to someone, an unscheduled phone call can feel like an intrusion (干擾). While text messages can be put to one side for hours or even days, a phone call demands attention in the moment.
But while text messages and emails may be a more efficient way of sharing basic facts and information, they’re not necessarily the best way of communication. We may be communicating more than ever before, but we seem to be listening far less.
32. What does the author intend to tell us in paragraph 1?
A. People chat much less on the phone now.
B. People are addicted to messaging apps.
C. People find no time to chat face-to-face.
D. People have many ways to communicate.
33. According to Rachel, when a good friend calls her, she __________.
A. will ignore the call.
B. will call back immediately.
C. will make an official visit to her friend.
D. will think her friend has some problems.
34. What can be learned from the text?
A. Text messages demand immediate attention.
B. An unscheduled phone call may be unwelcome.
C. Using a phone call to communicate is out of date.
D. It is hard to keep track of friends on messaging apps.
35. What is the author’s attitude towards phone conversation?
A. Doubtful. B. Uncaring. C. Supportive. D. Hopeful.
The Internet has opened up a whole new online world for us to meet, chat and go where we’ve never been before. But just as in face-to-face communication, there are some rules of behavior that should be followed when online. 36 Imagine how you’d feel if you were in the other person’s shoes.
For anything you’re about to send: ask yourself, “Would I say this to the person’s face?” If the answer is no, rewrite and reread. 37
If someone online is rude to you, your instinct (本能) is to fire back in the same manner. But try not to do so. 38 If it was caused by a disagreement with another member, try to fix the situation by politely discussing it. Remember to respect the beliefs and opinions of others online.
39 Offer advice when asked by newcomers, as they may not be sure what to do or how to communicate. When someone makes a mistake, whether it’s a stupid question or an unnecessarily long answer, be kind about it. If it’s a small mistake, you may not need to say anything. Even if you feel strongly about it, think twice before saying anything. Having good manners yourself doesn’t give you license (特許) to correct everyone else. 40 At the same time, if you find you are wrong, be sure to correct yourself and apologize to those that you have offended.
It is not polite to ask others personal questions such as their age, sex and marital status(婚姻狀況). Unless you know the person very well, and you are both comfortable with sharing personal information, don’t ask such questions.
A.Everyone was new to the network once.
B.If you do decide to tell someone about a mistake, point it out politely.
C.It’s natural that there are some people who speak rudely or make mistakes online.
D.The basic rule is simple: treat others in the same way you would want to be treated.
E.You should either ignore the person, or use your chat software to block their messages.
F.When you send short messages to a person online, you must say something beautiful to Hear.
G.Repeat the process till you feel sure that you’d feel comfortable saying the words to the persons face.

Usually, when we talk about reading, we think of using our eyes 56 (see) letters written in ink on paper. 57 , this is not always true. For example, blind people cannot see, but they can still read books.
The man 58 (introduce) blind people to reading was Louis Braille. Braille lost his eyesight at the age of three as a result of 59 injury. When he was ten, he went to a school for the blind in Paris.
In 1821, a soldier visited the school and showed the students a system for passing 60 (message) at night during times of battle. His system used paper with small, raised dots 61 could be felt with the fingers. Each letter of the alphabet was represented by a different pattern which 62 (make) up of twelve dots. While the students found the soldier’s idea interesting, the system was too difficult to be 63 practical use. But young Louis Braille took the idea and worked on it. 閱讀下面材料,根據(jù)其內(nèi)容和所給段落開頭語續(xù)寫兩段,使之構(gòu)成一篇完整的短文。
When I was ten years old, I lived with my family in a small house in rural South Jersey. I often accompanied my mother to the A&P to buy goods. Without a car, we walked, and I would help her carry the bags.
My mother had to shop very carefully, as she was a waitress, and the money she earned could only raise the family. One day. while she was waiting in line to pay for the goods, a promotional(促銷的) display for the World Book“ Encyclopedia(百科全書)” caught my eye. The books were beautifully cream-colored and you could buy one only with ninety-nine cents if you had already had a ten-dollar purchase.
All I could think of while shopping was the book. I stood at the check-out counter with my mother, holding my breath as the cashier rang up the items. It came to over eleven dollars. My mother took out a five, and a handful of change. As she was counting out the money, I somehow found the courage to ask for the encyclopedia. “Could we get one?” I said, showing her the display. “It’s only ninety-nine cents.”
I did not understand my mother’s increasing anxiety: she did not have enough change and had to give up a large can of peas to pay the amount. “Not now, Patricia,” she said seriously. “Today is not a good day.” I packed the goods and followed her home, upset.
The next Saturday, my mother gave me a dollar and sent me to the A&P alone. Two bottles of milk and a loaf of bread----that’s what a dollar in 1957. I went straight to the World Book display. There was only one encyclopedia left, which I placed in my cart. I didn’t need a cart, but took one so I could read as I went up and down the aisles(過道). A lot of time went by and I knew I had to leave, but I couldn’t bear to part with the book. With no security guard in sight, I, quickly, put it inside my shirt and zipped(扣上拉鏈)up my jacket. I was a tall, thin kid, and I am certain the shape of the book was obvious.

Dear Jack,
knowing that you are interested in Chinese great scientists,I’ll introduce to you my favorite scientist, Tu Youyou.
Tu Youyou devoted most of her time to finding the cure for malaria. In 2015, she was awarded the Nobel Prize for discovering artemisinin, which is the key to the treatment of malaria. So great is her contribution to the world that she has become an idol of many people, including me. Inspired by her devotion and persistence, I decided to study harder to realise my dream.
I hope her story can also have a positive effect on you.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua

My heart beating rapidly, I headed to check out. I paid the dollar for the three items and was about to leave when I felt a heavy tap on my shoulder. It was a big security guard. “You stole something. You will be searched.” He announced. Horrified, I slid the book out from inside the shirt and handed it over. “An encyclopedia?” he asked, somewhat surprised. “Yes.” I whispered, trembling. “Why didn’t you ask your parents to buy it?” “I did, but they didn’t have the money.” With s sigh, he made me promise to tell my parents about wrongdoing and then let me leave.
Back home, I told my mother I had promised the security guard. Unexpectedly, she didn’t explode as usual. she fell silent, looking extremely anxious. Consumed with guilt, I gathered my courage, apologized and promised that it would never ever happen again. “All will be ok!” said my mother, wrapping me in her arms. Then she told me that she would go to the A&P to tell the security guard I had admitted and that I should play outside. Hours later, when I was back home, I noticed a bag with my name on it. I opened it and packed inside was the world book Encyclopedia.

W: Dennis, do you still live with your parents?
M: No. I moved out last month. I’ve already decided to live on my own.
W: how can you afford the rent?
M: I’ve been employed by a new company.
(Text 2)
W: Bradley, some audience said your acting in the movie is barely satisfactory. So what do you think of your performance?
M: I’m not quite satisfied with it either. But it’s just my first movie. I’m sure I’ll do better next time.
(Text 3)
M: I heard there will be a power cut tonight.
W: Don’t worry. I’ve already bought some candles.
M: So when will it begin?
W: It’ll begin at 7:00 pm and will last for three hours.
(Text 4)
W: Did you have a good time during your camping?
M: Just so-so. Phoebe had been called away by her boss before we set out. Jenny felt sick all the way. I had to send her to Martin’s to give her a physical checkup.
W:Oh! Maybe she got carsick.
(Text 5)
M: I was thinking about ordering some takeout. Do you want to order a personal dish or share something bigger?
W: I’ll just get a piece of beef and some vegetables. I had a late lunch, so I don’t have much of an appetite right now.
(Text 6)
W: It’s Children’s Day. Will we stay at home all day? Why don’t we go to the amusement park?
M: Oh, there’s always too much noise.
W: What about the circus?
M: Circus? Is it still in town?
W: Yes, and you promised our son you’d take him there before it leaves.
M: The circus will be so crowded today. What about going to the cinema? Peter likes watching movies.
W: That sounds good.
(Text 7)
W: The water supply of our building has been cut off. I haven’t stored any water for cooking today.
M: Then are you up for a restaurant meal tonight?
W: I guess we have no choice but eat out. We could go to the Mexican restaurant around the corner of our street.
M: I’d like to try something different this time.
W: Then we can go the Italian restaurant or the French restaurant.
M: I prefer the latter.
W: It’s fine with me. The restaurant is a bit far. Will we drive or take a taxi there?
M: Well, we’ve been a couch potato recently. I would rather ride shared bikes all the way there.
W: Ok, it’s up to you.
(Text 8)
W: Tom, what were you watching just now?
M: I was watching a TV series Heartland. It’s about a family who lives on a ranch with horses and cattle.
W: Why did you watch such s series? It must be very boring.
M: Well, it may sound boring to you, but I really love watching it. Though its story is neither exciting nor touching, it tells about the life that I truly want to live.
W: You mean you want to live a simple and peaceful life?
M: Yes. I’ve been thinking a lot lately about living in the countryside like my grandparents . I can keep many animals and plants and then get safe, healthy food there. I can even slow my pace in the busy world, looking at the scenery around world and enjoying myself.
W: So do you want to move to the countryside?
M: Yes. If you get tired of the city life someday, why not experience it for yourself?
W: Well, I grew up here. Life here is so much more exciting.

W: Dave, what about going to Maya Bay in Thailand for a holiday this year? The magazine says it’s a very famous beach in the country.
M: I know that beach. It made headlines in 1999 when some people arrived there to film the famous Hollywood movie The Beach. Since then, tourists have flooded in this beach with as many as 4.000 visitors arriving on boats every day.
W: That’s really hard to believe.
M:Yes. Sadly, tourism ruined the natural life there. That is why the Tailband government closed the beach to tourists for about four years.
W: I didn’t know it was closed for about four years. So when did it reopen?
M: It reopened in January 2022. Now there is a limit of 300 visitors per day.
W: Well, I think it’s a good decision.
M: I agree. Scientists there believe that beach is a natural resource they have to preserve. Actually there’re many other great beaches in Thailand. We don’t have to visit that one.
W: You’re right. But I don’t know any other beaches.
M: It’s easy. Let’s search for some information on websites and then make a decision.
W: Good idea.
