A group at the Washington University School of Medicine just finished a study of more than 50,000 people on this topic. The results are not very good. Between 2001 and 2016, the amount of time most people sit down every day increased. Teenagers spent about 7 hours per day sitting, but it went up an hour by the end of the study in 2016. Adults went from 5.5 hours to 6.5 hours. Researchers also found that most of the people in the study spent at least 2 hours a day sitting and watching TV or videos. Elderly people had the highest number of TV watchers, at 84 percent. Even 62 percent of children under 12 spent that much time watching shows each day. Sitting too much time is related to health problems like being very fat and having heart problems.

While established by Woodrow Wilson as a holiday in the United States in 1911, the practice of recognizing mothers on a specific day or time of year has spread to more than 40 countries. Here's a look at the various traditions.
France
Mother's Day in France only started in the 1950s. After World War I, it was celebrated on the last Sunday in May, unless it conflicted with the Pentecost(五旬節(jié)). If it did, mothers were celebrated on the first Sunday of June. Regardless of the day, a traditional gif is a flower-shaped cake.
Japan
Following WWI, Mother's Day in Japan gained some popularity, and it is now celebrated on the second Sunday of May. Gifts include red or pink conations(康乃馨) as they symbolize sweetness and purity. Children will often draw pictures of their mothers and present them to mom in addition to preparing dishes that their mothers have taught them.
Sweden
Celebrated on the last Sunday in May, the day isn't all that different from the U. S. version. There's breakfast in bed and homemade cards and the like. One difference is that the Swedish Red Cross collects money by selling red plastic flowers. The money from the flowers goes to mothers and children in need.
Thailand
While all mothers are recognized during Mother's Day in Thailand, the holiday is largely centered on Sirikit, the queen mother of Thailand. Mother's Day is celebrated on her birthday, August 12, and public places and households are decorated with lights and pictures of Sirikit. Flowers like jasmine are popular gifts.
21. What do Japanese children usually do for their mothers on Mother's Day?
A. Buy pictures. B. Cook meals. C. Grow flowers. D. Present cards.
22. Which country has a fixed date for Mother's Day?
A. France. B. Japan. C. Thailand. D. Sweden.
23. What's the author's purpose in writing the text?

A farmer had some puppies he needed to sell. As he was putting up a sign to sell the puppies, he felt a pull on his trousers. He looked down into the eyes of a little boy.
“Sir,” he said, “I want to buy one of your puppies.”
“Well,” said the farmer, “these puppies come from fine parents and cost a large number of money.”
The boy dropped his head for a moment. Then reaching deep into his pocket, he pulled out a handful of change.
“I’ve got 89 cents. Is that enough at least to take a look?”
“Sure,” said the farmer. “Here, Dolly!” he called. Out from the doghouse ran Dolly followed by four little balls of fur.
The little boy pressed his face against the fence. His eyes danced with joy. As the dogs made their way to the fence, the little boy noticed something else moving inside the doghouse.
Slowly another little fur ball appeared, this one noticeably smaller, wobbling (蹣跚) toward the others, doing its best to catch up.
“I want that one, ” the little boy said, pointing to the little dog.
The farmer knelt down at the boy’s side and said, “Son, you don’t want that puppy. He will never be able to run and play with you like these other dogs would.”
Hearing that, the little boy stepped back from the fence, reached down, and began rolling up one leg of his trousers. There was a disabled (殘疾的) leg with a specially made shoe attached to it. Looking back up at the farmer, he said, “You see, sir, I don’t run too well myself, and he will need someone who understands.”
With tears in his eyes, the farmer reached down and picked up the little pup. Holding it carefully he handed it to the little boy.

Do you listen to the songs that your parents like? Chances are that you don’t. You probably think the music that they like is old and dull and that the songs on your playlist are much cooler.
But here is what scientists found recently: people’s music tastes change as they age, according to a study published in Journal of Personality and Social Psychology. So it’s likely that your own musical preference will follow a similar path to your parents’, whether you like it or not.
Researchers at the University of Cambridge, UK, collected data (資料) from more than 250,000 people over the past 10 years. They noticed that as people age, their social circumstances (環(huán)境) change, and so does their music taste.
There are three musical periods that people pass through as they grow.
The first period comes in the teenage years, during which time people like punk and rock because teenagers want people to regard them as independent individuals (個體).
But as people move into early adulthood (成年), their lifestyle changes—they get to know more people and want to build close relationships with others. As a result, they prefer pop and R&B, which are often played at parties where people hang out together and chat.
When middle age comes, people like to listen to jazz and classical. They also like country, folk, and blues.
“During this period of life, many people often feel tired because of their work and family, and there is a requirement for relaxing and emotive (動情的) music,” said Jason Rentfrow, a research member.
But you must be thinking: “Aren’t there old people who still love rock music?” Of course there are. But Rentfrow explained that their reasons for listening to rock music may have changed. “We use music for different reasons,” he said, and at that age people may listen to remind themselves of their youths.
27. The underlined word “dull” in Paragraph 1 most probably means “________”.
A. hot B. sick C. enjoyable D. boring
28. Mike is twenty years old. What kind of music does he most probably like?
A. Pop. B. Jazz. C. Country. D. Classical.
29. According to Jason Rentfrow, middle age is a period when people ________.
A. feel relaxed about their work B. are under much stress
C. want to stay with their family D. like all kinds of music
30. Which of the following is a suitable title for this passage?
A. Why Do People Listen to Music? B. What Influences People’s Music Taste?
C. Do You Have a Talent for Music? D. Do Young People Like Classical Music?
D 28. A 29. B 30. B
根據第一段的“Do you listen to the songs that your parents like? Chances are that you don’t. You probably think the music that they like is old.(你聽你父母喜歡的歌嗎?很可能你不喜歡。你可能認為他們喜歡的音樂已經過時了)”可知,在你看來,父母喜歡的音樂因為過時而“無聊”,由此推測boring可以解釋dull。故選D。
【28題詳解】
推理判斷題。根據第六段的“But as people move into early adulthood, their lifestyle changes—they get to know more people and want to build close relationships with others. As a result, they prefer pop and R&B, which are often played at parties where people hang out together and chat.(但隨著人們步入早期成年階段,他們的生活方式發(fā)生了變化,他們認識了更多的人,并希望與他人建立密切的關系。因此,他們更喜歡流行樂和節(jié)奏藍調,這兩種音樂經常在聚會上播放,人們在聚會上一起聊天)”推知,20歲的Mike步入了早期成年階段,因此會喜歡流行音樂。故選A。

根據第二段的“But here is what scientists found recently: people’s music tastes change as they age, according to a study published in Journal of Personality and Social Psychology. (但科學家們最近發(fā)現:根據發(fā)表在《個性與社會心理學雜志》上的一項研究,人們的音樂品味隨著年齡的增長而變化)”和第四段的“There are three musical periods that people pass through as they grow.(人們在成長過程中會經歷三個音樂時期)”及全文內容可知,本文主要講述了人們的音樂品味會隨著年齡的增長而變化并分階段分析了相應的原因,因此B項(什么影響了人們的音樂品味?)適合作標題。故選B。
