The summer before my senior year in high school, the field hockey (曲棍球)coach asked me to join the team. They were short on players.
I didn’t know the rules of field hockey. I didn’t even know how to use the stick. I wasn’t friends with most of the girls on the team. But all of those things seemed easy to cope with. What worried me most about trying out for the team was the running requirement. I had to be able to run three miles.
I grew up playing sports — basketball, volleyball and the one I stuck with, fast-pitch softball (快速壘球), which required almost zero running. But with this three-mile requirement for field hockey, I spent the summer before my senior year learning to run.
At first, I was terribly slow, but I didn’t let that influence me. I told myself it didn’t matter how slowly I ran, so long as I kept running.
This method wasn’t a proven training program by any running expert...but it worked. By the time school started in the fall, I could run three miles, and I made it onto the field hockey team. I was one of the slowest runners on the team, I didn’t stop running until I hit the finish line. Over the next few months, I started getting faster.
Then the hockey season came around...and something exciting happened. To toughen (使更堅(jiān)強(qiáng)) us up one day at the beginning of the season, the coach had us do a three-mile run as a warm-up.
I started out with the group, and then pulled ahead, just by running at the speed I’d gotten used to. I finished that run well ahead of every other person on my team. Somehow, the girl who was known for being the slowest had become, at least for one day, the fastest.
11.Why did the author feel fearful to try out for the field hockey team? ________
A.She knew nothing about the rules.
B.She knew little about the girls on the team.
C.She found it difficult to use the stick properly.
D.She was worried about the running requirement.
12.What can we learn about the author from paragraph 3? ________
A.She is very sporty.
B.She likes summer sports.
C.She planned to join the softball team.
D.She used to spend her summer running.
13.What does the underlined phrase "This method" in paragraph 5 refer to? ________
A.Running as long as possible.
B.Running as slowly as possible.
C.Keeping running at one’s own speed.
D.Pushing oneself to go farther each day.
14.What happened at the beginning of the hockey season? ________
A.The author helped her team win.
B.The author developed a love for running.
C.The author became the fastest player on her team.
D.The author got used to the amount of running required in hockey.
15.What can we learn from the passage? ________
A.A good beginning is half done.
B.Failure is the mother of success.
C.A little effort every day, you will make a difference.
D.The grass is always greener on the other side.

Learning Online
Because of COVID-19, we’ve studied online for several months. During that time, I started classes at 8 o’clock and finished classes at 3 o’clock every day. My homework was also sent to the teacher through Dingding.
I benefit a lot from learning online. This new way of learning is very interesting and there are many different resources shared online, which are very useful to us. Besides, studying at home is both comfortable and convenient. We can study at our own place. However, spending too much time online is bad for our eyesight and we can be easily distracted by computer games. What’s worse, with less communication with teachers, it’s hard for us to solve problems in our study.
So I suggest you contact your teachers more to get help.
