Chicken eggs are just thin shells (殼), but you may be surprised at how strong they are. Let’s do an experiment.
What you need
· Four eggs · Sharp scissors ·Tape (膠帶) ·A bowl
· Phone books or hardcover books
What you do
Step 1. Dig a hole in the small end of each egg and make it larger to pour the eggs into the bowl. They are good for cooking. Wash and air dry the shells.
Step 2. Stick the tape around each egg’s widest point, and then carefully break away shells between the tape and the hole.
Step 3. Put shells in a square at the four corners of the piece of paper, with the round end of the egg on top.
Step 4. Add more books and see how strong the eggshells are.
What has happened
The strength of an eggshell lies in its shape. It’s like a 3D arch (拱形) or dome (圓頂), which is one of the strongest shapes. The shape of the eggshell spreads pressure all over the whole egg rather than at one point. In fact, the shape of the eggshell is seen in many types of architecture (建筑設(shè)計(jì)), including doorways and large windows. The strong walls of the shell will support the weak point. At right conditions, the thin eggshell can even hold up 20kg weight!
51. What does the experiment show us?
A. A small hole can make it easier to pour eggs. B. Eggshells are thin.
C. Books are harder than eggshells. D. Eggshells are strong.
52. How many kinds of things are needed in the experiment?
A. Three. B. Four. C. Five. D. Six
53. Which picture is the right way to practice Step 3?
A. B.
C. D.
54. Why can the eggshells support some books?
A. Because the books are hardcover. B. Because the books are light.
C. Because there many eggs.
D. Because the shape of the eggshell spreads pressure to the whole egg.
55. Where is the passage probably from?
A. A science magazine. B. A novel.
C. A history magazine. D. A travel guide.
B
Climate change is threatening (威脅) our future as more greenhouse gases like CO2 are collecting in the air. To solve the problem, scientists have suggested whales as a solution. They have found whales are excellent at controlling CO2.
Whales remove (清除) carbon from the air in two ways. First, they bring nutrients (養(yǎng)分) from the deep ocean back to the surface. Those nutrients help the growth of plants. Second, whales themselves collect CO2 in their bodies when they eat other animals. A whale can collect about 33 tons of gas over its lifetime. When whales die, they take all that carbon with them down to the ocean floor.
There used to be millions of whales in the world’s oceans. But it’s a pity that whaling between the 1600s and the mid- 1900s brought many whales to death. Starting in the 1970s, careful management of whaling began. Many whales have been saved, but the huge animals are still influenced by pollution from chemicals (化學(xué)品), noise, and lots of plastics that end up in the oceans.
If whale population is as big as before, whales could take in about 1.7 billion tons of CO2 each year. Think about the high costs needed to plant forests for taking in CO2, you will see whales might be an amazing solution. So let’s fight for it.
56. Why have scientists suggested whales as a solution?
A. Because whales are facing great dangers.
B. Because whales are good at controlling CO2.
C. Because whales are more useful than forests.
D. Because whales can save other animals in the oceans.
57. What’s the second paragraph mainly about?
A. The ways whales use to remove carbon from the air.
B. The whale populations in the world’s oceans.
C. The amount of CO2 whales take in every year.
D. The ways whales use to look for other animals.
58. What does the underlined whaling mean?
A. The habits of whales. B. The protection of whales.
C. The killing of whales. D. The growth of whales.
59. Whales face many dangers except according to the passage.
A. greenhouse gases B. chemicals C. noise pollution D. plastic pollution
60. What is the main purpose of the passage?
A. To show a whale’s lifetime.
B. To explain why whales are in danger.
C. To show the disadvantages of whaling.
D. To call on people to save whales for our planet.

In China, many students spend much time on their studies, and don’t help with housework at home. As a result, they lack basic skills.
Luckily, things are changing. Since two years ago, the governments have given a lot of policies, requiring that colleges, middle schools and primary schools pay more attention to students’ labor (勞動(dòng)) education. Following these policies, many schools offered some labor classes and began to teach students life skills.
Guangming Middle School in Sichuan set up a School Garden. In the garden, there are many plants, including beans, potatoes, pumpkins. “At first, I thought I could only grow some vegetables here, but actually, I learnt a lot about vegetables.” said Chen Jia, a girl at the school. The School Garden can teach children the importance of caring for the environment and how nature works to feed us.
In Hope Middle School, students have a special life skill class: they learn to make dumplings in different kinds of shapes. “I couldn’t make dumplings before, but now I am good at doing it. I really love my life skill class. It’s my favorite class,” said Zhang Yan, a boy at the school.
In fact, learning life skills is as important as learning Chinese and math, because it helps students prepare for their future life.
