Most people agree that honesty is a good thing. But does Mother Nature agree? Animals can’t talk, but can they lie with their bodies and behavior? Animal experts may not call it lying, but they do agree that many animals behave dishonestly to fool other animals. Dishonesty often helps them survive.
Many kinds of birds are very successful at fooling other animals. A bird called the plover sometimes pretends (假裝) to be hurt in order to protect its young. When an enemy gets close to its nest, the plover pretends to have a broken wing. The enemy follows the “hurt” adult, leaving the baby birds safe.
Another kind of bird, the scrub jay, buries (埋) its food so it always has something to eat. Scrub jays also steal food. They watch where others bury their food and steal it. But clever scrub jays seem to know when others are watching them. So they get back later, unbury the food, and bury it again somewhere else.
Chimpanzees can also be sneaky. After a fight, the losing chimpanzee will give its hand to the other. When the winning chimpanzee puts out its hand, too, the chimpanzees are friendly again. But an animal expert once saw a losing chimpanzee take the winner’s hand and start fighting again. When chimpanzees find food, it’s natural for them to cry out. Then other chimpanzees come running. But some clever chimpanzees learn to cry very softly when they find food. That way, other chimpanzees don’t hear them, and they don’t need to share the food.
56. How does the plover save its young?
A. Catch the enemy. B. Show their honesty. C. Pretend to be hurt. D. Feed them food.
57. What will the scrub jay do when it knows others are watching them?
A. Bury the food twice. B. Stopping stealing the food.
C. Bury the food as usual. D. Run away immediately.
58. What does the underlined word “sneaky” mean?
A. Honest. B. Brave. C. Weak. D. Lying.
59. Why do many animals behave dishonestly?
A. Because they want to have fun.
B. Because they need to do that for living on.
C. Because they want to share food.
D. Because they are beaten down.
60. What is the best title of the passage?
A. Do animals lie? B. Honesty or dishonesty?
C. How do animals protect lives? D. Does Mother Nature agree?

62.Erica,9, Texas. My dream is to be on the Olympic team for gymnastics(體操). My dad thinks I started too late and I’ll never be able to make it. He puts me down, but I want his support. What should I do?
63.Ashley, 12, Wisconsin. What should I do if I failed a test? I am afraid to tell my mom because she might get mad and I can’t play soccer. And soccer is like the world to me.
64.Jessica,11, Canada. I just moved and I’m kind of shy, so how do I make new friends?
65.Linus,14, LA. My parents have made all the decisions in my life for me. My mom even decides which sock I should wear.

B. Nobody knows you at your new school. You have nothing to lose, so gather up all your courage and go over to someone who looks nice and say hi. You can break the ice by asking about your teacher and other kids in your class. Good luck!
C.Try to talk with your parents about it. Tell them you are old enough to make some decisions on your own and you need to learn to decide gradually. Show them you can do something independently.
D. Just be yourself and try not to care about what others think. The more you think about it, the worse you will feel. Always act strong and confident. Just relax.
E. You should tell him about your dream and that if you work really hard, it might happen even though you started late. The sooner you tell your dad how you feel, the sooner you will be able to work on making your dream come true.
F. Don’t talk to your mom about it. Don’t think about the test. What is done is done. Work hard from now on and try to pass the test next time.
G. First of all, you have to know that you aren’t old enough to know what real love is. Try to be an ordinary friend with him. You should pay more attention to your school work.

Is there a connection between music and language? According to recent studies, the answer is yes: Music helps develop certain language abilities in the brain.
A study from Northwestern University shows that playing a musical instrument can improve a person’s hearing ability. As a part of the study, two groups of people listened to a person talking in a noisy room. The people in the first group were musicians, while those in the second group had no musical training. The musicians were found to be able to hear the talking person more clearly.
“Musicians hear better,” says study leader Nina Kraus, “because they learn to pay attention to certain sounds.” For example, when the violinists play in an orehestra(管弦樂隊), they must listen closely to what they are playing and ignore the other sounds. In this way, musicians can hear certain sounds better, even in a room with lots of noise.
Gotfried Sehlaug, a doctor at Harvard Medical School, works with stroke(中風) patients. Because of their illness, these people cannot say their names, address or other information. However, they can still sing. Dr. Schlaug was surprised to find singing words helped his patients finally speak. Why does this work? Schlaug isn’t sure. Music seems to be able to make different parts of the brain active, including the bad parts. In some way, this helps patients use those parts of the brain again.
So music is not only enjoyable, but also good for us in many other ways. “Playing an instrument or singing,” says Nina Kraus, “can help us do better in school and keep our brain sharp as we get older.”

Have you ever seen a solar panel(太陽能電池板) in your neighborhood? Solar panels take energy from the sun and turn it into electricity. Over the past ten years, the price of solar panels has gone down greatly. In many parts of the world, solar energy is now the cheapest form of electricity. More and more people have started using solar energy to power(給…供電) their homes.
However, solar panels also have their problems. They stop working at night and on rainy days. Is it possible to make them produce electricity all of the time?
Scientists at Suzhou University, China, have invented a new solar panel now. It can produce electricity not only from solar energy, but also from falling rain. When a raindrop falls on the solar panel and then rolls(滾動) down, it creates friction(摩擦力) on the surface of the panel, which can then be turned into electricity.
Sun Baoquan is one of the inventors. “Our new invention can produce electricity in any weather during the day,” he says. "It can even provide electricity at night if there is rain.”
The solar panel, however, does not make much electricity. So Baoquan is still working hard to improve it. The scientist also wants to make solar panels more flexible, which are as soft as clothing.
