If you walk through the streets of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, you’ll immediately (立即) notice something wonderful about the city: the street art. All around the city, the walls are covered with colorful graffiti (涂鴉) and bright paintings. In the past, this street art was not allowed. But in 2009, the city passed a law allowing street art on private buildings if the owner gives permission (允許). In 2014, Rio de Janeiro became the first city in the world to legalize (合法化) graffiti in places such as skate parks and the walls.
People who want to create street art in Rio de Janeiro can’t just paint any wall with any picture, though. They still have to follow some rules. Street art and graffiti are allowed, but just signing a name on a wall is not. And if an artist wants to create a picture on the walls of someone’s house or shop, the artist must ask the owner first. But getting permission might not be too hard. Street art is very popular throughout the city, both with the local people and with visitors. Many tourists come to Brazil just to see it. The world has a plastic problem. And not just with bottles. Straws (吸管), toothbrushes, toys—all kinds of plastics are placed in landfills (垃圾填埋場). There are 5 billion tons of plastic waste in the world. Landfills have a large part of it. By 2050, they could have 13 billion tons.
Much of plastic rubbish finds its way into the ocean. Scientists say 165 million tons of plastic pieces are floating (漂浮) around out there. And most plastic won’t disappear itself. It will remain in the ocean forever. Whales get caught in plastic fishing nets. Birds die because of eating plastic straws and bottle caps. It endangers ocean life. Plastic rubbish even ends up in the food we eat.
Governments are realizing that recycling may not be enough. They are taking more actions. Though it is hard work, it is still a solvable problem. In Britain, people are not allowed to use plastic bags except in hospitals. Scotland and several coastal (沿海的) cities in the US stop people from using plastic straws as well. The US alone discarded (丟棄) some 500 million plastic straws a day. That’s enough to circle the Earth twice. “Saying no to a plastic straw is an easy way to protect the environment,” Diana Lofflin who started www.strawfree.org said. “Do we really want to pass on to our children a world harmed by plastic?”
People have found some tasty ways to reduce waste. A company in India made the first-ever spoon that people can eat. You don’t have to eat the spoon. You can throw it away. It decomposes (分解) in just a few days. David Edwards, a scientist at Harvard University, designed an eatable bag which can protect the food or drink inside. It is a delicious replacement (替代品) for plastic ones.

While I and my family are waiting to compete, my friend Tomeu comes. He and his family are also part of our team.
“What if I’m not ready for this, Tomeu?” I ask.
Tomeu smiles at me. “We are never ready, Jordi. None of us knows for sure how it’ll go. But you must have faith in the others. You must trust those below who lift you up, and you must trust yourself.” Tomeu pats me on the shoulder. “Have faith. Have focus.”
Soon, too soon, it is our turn. Father and three of the strongest men stand in a circle and hold tightly to each other’s arms. Four smaller men climb up to stand on their shoulders, creating a strong second level. Our tower is growing taller and taller. Next, my mother helps form the fifth level.
Then suddenly it’s my turn. “Faith and focus,” Tomeu says. I climb over the backs of the first two levels without difficulty. But when I reach the fifth level, my knees start to tremble, for I’m very high off the ground. I place my foot into the waist belt of my mother and try to stand, but my foot slips off the belt, and the tower below me moves a bit. My heart begins a crazy dance.
“Tranquil. Easy.” My mother whispers. I take a deep breath to calm myself and again place my foot into her belt. I push myself to a stand and step onto her shoulders. With focus and trust, I straighten my knees slowly until I’m standing. Below me, I feel my mother’s strength. Opposite me, Tomeu has also come to a stand on his mother’s shoulders. He and I hold each other’s arms, making a strong sixth level.
I turn my face up to the sun and laugh, for I am no longer frightened. Soon, I feel my sister’s hands on my feet. I work hard to hold myself straight and strong for her. Once she climbs onto my shoulders. our tower is complete.
The crowd cheers loud. I smile across at Tomeu. Whether or not we win this competition, I know we’ve done what we set out to do. Today, I am a casteller!

Mom said that the Chinese fan was a good choice, for China is praised as “the Fan Kingdom”. I couldn’t agree more, because it is more than a tool for cooling.
