B
There’s nothing wrong with a tomato that isn’t perfectly rounded or a peach with an extra dimple (凹) or two; they still carry the same benefits and flavors as the versions we’re used to seeing in grocery stores. Farmers throw away these imperfect items, as many grocery chains won’t buy them for fear that they are unsellable. However, a growing group of grocery chains are fighting to make these discarded fruits and vegetables part of consumers’ buying habits.
One such business is Imperfect Produce, a start-up that delivers fresh ugly produce to consumers. Through this service, you can get up to 20 pounds of fruit and veggies for around $20 a week. This is about a 30 percent discount compared to what’s currently sold in stores. Recently, the company had a major breakthrough when Whole Foods accepted their partnership and agreed to sell the misshaped produce.
While this movement might be a new trend here in the US, it’s already gained serious momentum (勢頭) in Europe. In 2014, the E. U. announced the Year Against Food Waste, with French grocery chain Intermarché launching a very successful campaign called Inglorious Fruits and Vegetables and England’s Waitrose selling “weather blemished” apples. In Portugal, a similar company to Imperfect Produce called Fruta Feia has also taken off.
Buying these unfortunate-looking foods should be appealing to consumers not only because of the affordability, but also because of the support it gives to farmers and the direct impact it has on decreasing food waste and the environmental pollution. It is believed that when the discarded fruits and vegetables decompose (腐爛) they release methane (甲烷), a greenhouse gas that, when released into the atmosphere, is about 86 times as powerful as carbon dioxide over a 20-year period. Waste is, in fact, the ugliest thing of all.
4. What does the underlined word “discarded” in paragraph one mean?
A. Thrown-away. B. Harvested.
C. Consumed. D. Sold-out.
5. What is the purpose of Imperfect Produce?
A. Make better profits. B. Sell imperfect produce.
C. Get discounts from farmers. D. Compete with Whole Foods.
6. What can we learn about Europe compared with the US?
A. It has more successfully-run food chains.
B. It produces less misshaped fruits and vegetables.
C. It addresses the problem of misshaped produce earlier.
D. It faces a more serious problem of unfavorable weather.
7. According to the last paragraph, why is wasted food harmful to the environment?
A. It pollutes the farms. B. It gives out a bad smell.
C It contributes to global warming. D. It produces lots of carbon dioxide.
A 5. B 6. C 7. C

Sending human travelers to Mars would require scientists and engineers to overcome a range of technological and safety obstacles. One of them is the serious risk posed by particle (粒子) radiation from the sun, distant stars and galaxies (星系).
Answering two key questions would go a long way toward overcoming that difficulty: Would particle radiation pose too serious a threat to human life throughout a round trip to the red planet? And, could the very timing of a mission to Mars help shield astronauts and the spacecraft from the radiation?
In a new article published in the journal Space Weather, an international team of space scientists, including researchers from UCLA, answers those two questions with a “no” and a “yes.” That is, humans should be able to safely travel to and from Mars, provided that the spacecraft has sufficient shielding and the round trip is shorter than approximately four years. And the timing of a human mission to Mars would indeed make a difference: The scientists determined that the best time for a flight to leave Earth would be when solar activity is at its peak, because, during this period, the most dangerous and energetic particles from distant galaxies are deflected (偏轉(zhuǎn)) by the enhanced solar activity.
A trip of that length would be imaginable. The average flight to Mars takes about nine months, so depending on the timing of launch and available fuel, it is reasonable that a human mission could reach the planet and return to Earth in less than two years, according to Yuri Shprits, a UCLA research geophysicist and co–author of the paper.
“This study shows that while space radiation impose (強(qiáng)加) strict limitations on how heavy the spacecraft can be and the time of launch, and it presents technological difficulties for human missions to Mars, such a mission is possible,” said Shprits, who also is head of space physics and space weather at GFZ Research Centre for Geosciences in Potsdam, Germany.
8. What’s the function of the first paragraph?
A. To list human’s achievements in space.
B. To show a possible way to travel to Mars.
C. To introduce scientists’ effort to travel to Mars.
D. To present one of the difficulties of the trip to Mars.
9. What does the underlined word “shield” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Escape. B. Approach. C. Protect. D. Separate.
10. How long can a round trip to Mars last considering the safety of astronauts and the spacecraft?
A About 9 years. B. Less than 4 years.
C. Only 5 years. D. More than 6 years.
11. What can be the best title for the text?
A. Will It Be Safe for Humans to Fly to Mars?
B. Humans Will Travel to Mars in Two Years
C. The Timing of a Trip to Mars Is Planned
D. Particle Radiation Changes for the Solar Activity

根據(jù)第一段的“One of them is the serious risk posed by particle (粒子) radiation from the sun, distant stars and galaxies (星系).(其中之一是來自太陽、遙遠(yuǎn)恒星和星系的粒子輻射帶來的嚴(yán)重風(fēng)險(xiǎn))”和第二段的“Answering two key questions would go a long way toward overcoming that difficulty(回答兩個(gè)關(guān)鍵問題將對克服這一困難大有幫助)”可推知,第一段的作用是介紹人類前往火星需要克服的一個(gè)難題。
根據(jù)第三段的“That is, humans should be able to safely travel to and from Mars, provided that the spacecraft has sufficient shielding and the round trip is shorter than approximately four years.(也就是說,人類應(yīng)該能夠安全地往返火星,前提是宇宙飛船有足夠的屏蔽,往返時(shí)間不超過大約4年)”可知,人類安全地往返火星是可行的,前提是宇宙飛船有足夠的保護(hù),而且往返時(shí)間少于四年。
通讀全文,尤其是第二段“Answering two key questions would go a long way toward overcoming that difficulty: Would particle radiation pose too serious a threat to human life throughout a round trip to the red planet? And, could the very timing of a mission to Mars help shield astronauts and the spacecraft from the radiation?(回答兩個(gè)關(guān)鍵問題將對克服這一困難大有幫助:粒子輻射是否會在往返火星的過程中對人類生命構(gòu)成太嚴(yán)重的威脅?而且,前往火星的時(shí)間是否能夠幫助宇航員和宇宙飛船免受輻射的傷害?)”和第三段的“That is, humans should be able to safely travel to and from Mars, provided that the spacecraft has sufficient shielding and the round trip is shorter than approximately four years.(也就是說,人類應(yīng)該能夠安全地往返火星,前提是宇宙飛船有足夠的屏蔽,往返時(shí)間不超過大約4年)”可知,本文主要講的是人類前往火星將會受到太空中的粒子輻射的影響。科學(xué)家認(rèn)為合適的啟程時(shí)間和合理的旅行周期將能確保宇航員的安全,故A項(xiàng)“Will It Be Safe for Humans to Fly to Mars?(人類飛往火星會是安全的嗎?)”

The term “social distancing” has been at the center of public conversation for a while. But it’s not “social” distance we are trying to promote. It’s physical separation. In fact, preserving social ties—even at a distance—is essential for both mental and physical health. The results of an analytic review done in 2017 indicate that a lack of social support nearly amounts to smoking cigarettes as a risk factor for health.
Given this fact, how might we best stay connected to others while maintaining physical distance? Would we be better off e-mailing a friend? Making a phone call? Setting up a video chat? In our study, Nick Epley and I tested whether the media, through which people interact, affects their sense of connection, and how expectations about certain technologies impact (影響) the communication media they choose to use.
In our experiment, we asked participants to reconnect with someone that they hadn’t interacted with recently, either through e-mail or over the phone. Participants first made predictions about what it would be like to get in touch if they reached out in these two ways. They generally believed that they’d feel more connected when interacting via the phone than over e-mail. But they also predicted that talking on the phone could be more uncomfortable than sending an e-mail. Although these participants believed that talking encouraged stronger bonds, most of them said they’ d rather send an e-mail than call the person up.
Fears about awkwardness, it seems, push individuals toward text-based methods for communicating. In the next part of the experiment, we had participants actually reconnect using one randomly determined mode of communication and then followed up with them after they had done so. We found that people do form meaningfully stronger bonds when interacting over the phone than over e-mail. Importantly, though, there was no difference in the amount of discomfort when reconnecting on the phone.
The next time you think about how best to connect, consider calling or setting up a video chat. Feelings of social connection are preferably promoted by voice rather than a keyboard.
12. How does the author support his view on the importance of maintaining social ties?
A. By stating a deep-rooted tradition.
B. By quoting a published report.
C. By sharing public opinions.
D. By presenting government’s policy.
13. What did the author and Epley’s study focus on?
A. How technologies impact means of communication.
B. How people’s behaviour affects each other’s friendship.
C. Why maintaining social separation is bad for mental health.
D. Why reconnecting with friends over the phone brings awkwardness.
14. What can we infer from the study results?
A. They changed the research objectives.
B. They live up to society’s expectations.
C. They provided inspiration for future studies.
D. They are partly opposed to participants’ predictions.
15. What can be concluded from the text?
A. For stronger bonds, talk instead of typing.
B. Keeping in touch is the key to a lasting friendship.
C. Think before you consider contacting an old friend.
D. Text-based methods for communication cause discomfort.

If you've been feeling a lot sleepy in your daily life, here are some tips to picking up your energy levels. But first, you should make sure if you're experiencing some serious illnesses. ___16___, keep these tips in mind.
The first recommendation is to exercise. Although it may seem difficult to work out when you're tired, it turns out that physical activity can actually give you more energy. The second thing to work on is to go to sleep early enough to get a full night's sleep, preferably so that you wake up naturally without the need for your alarm. ____17____. Thus, another useful tip is to take a nap during the afternoon. Naps can restore your mind and body without taking up too much time, regaining your energy and raising working efficiency. The best length of time for a nap is about 20 minutes. Shorter, and you won't get much out of it. ___18___ .
___19___. Drinking plenty of water and fluids throughout the day is one important way to stay energized, since dehydration (脫水)leaves us in low sprits. Some experts say that eating smaller meals more often throughout the day can help maintain energy and balance blood sugar levels. Be aware also that people who are overweight are more likely to experience tiredness easily. ___20___ , reducing extra weight could help you gain more energy.
A. If you're overweight
B. If you feel uncomfortable
C. As you know, it is quite a good habit
D. However, this goal is hard to achieve in practice
E. longer, and you may find it harder to sleep at night
F. If you're otherwise healthy but just need some extra energy

I couldn’t bear it any longer! My best friend had gone for lunch with the most popular girl in class, leaving me to eat my tuna sandwich alone in the library. Worse still, during dance class, my partner, a boy, refused to hold my hand and bad mouthed me behind my back, further feeding my anger. It was, without a doubt, my worst day in school. I was hurt and mad, and looking for a target to release my anger.
When I got home from school , Mother had baked peanut butter cookies and piled them up on a plate. She even artfully decorated each one with royal icing and topped it with sugar. “Couldn’t you have made chocolate. chip?” I said moodily. “I could have,” she replied from the laundry room, “but I made peanut butter ones. Eat them while they’re still hot, sweetie.” Although I thought Mother was rather unthoughtful, I caved in and took a few bites unwillingly in the end. Later, when she pulled a grilled chicken from the oven and sang a merry tune, I somehow got annoyed again — Never mind that Mother had busied herself the whole afternoon with the cooking just to put this hot meal on the table. I wanted hamburgers.
“Nobody even likes that kind of food, Mum! Why didn’t you make hamburgers?” I complained. Mother took a deep breath, ran her fingers through her messy hair and looked into my eyes with a puzzled look. “Sweetheart, you’ve never complained about having it before. What’s up?” she said matter-of-factly.
It was from there that all went downhill. I screamed and complained nonstop until Mother hit her limit. Unable to contain her anger,” No dinner for you! Go to bed now !”she exploded. It was the first time that Mother had got mad at me. Nobody seemed to care about me, including my beloved mother! Ultimately, we had a shouting match in the hallway. I stormed to my bedroom, anger mounting up within me.

Para. 1:
I screamed and wept bitterly in bed. All that crying finally released my uncontrollable anger. As I calmed down and my breathing became regular, the day’s events began to unfold in my mind. A sharp pang of fault hit me. Why had I treated Mother as a target to release my anger? If I had shared about my woes, Mother would have listened. The more I thought about my actions, the heavier my heart felt. Then, I heard strange sounds coming from the kitchen. Puzzled, I opened my bedroom door, tiptoeing towards the kitchen.
Para. 2:
Then a thick, juicy smell of hamburgers greeted my nose. Sensing my footsteps, Mother looked up, asking tentatively, “Want some?” I took a bite guiltily, shedding regretful tears. “Mom, I’m awfully sorry for being awful to you today. I had a bad day at school. I don’t deserve this.” I apologized. “I should have guessed you’re in a tough spot, sorry, honey. I remember those growing up years.” Mother smiled and gave me a bear hug. There was nothing like mother’s unconditional love — that night, I should have been punished; instead, Mother dished up a hearty portion of grace.
