A
See who’s winning awards on the 2023 Academy Awards race, but nothing speaks to the 2023 Oscars race like golden statistics.
Best Picture:The Fabelmans
Steven Spielberg’s latest film, The Fabelmans, tums out to be a deeply personal look into another kind of hole: his own biography. Because it’s Spielberg, it’s all beautifully, meticulously pictured, with misty ode(歌頌)to the people who raised him. The mist burns away, though, as the movie goes on, in part because Michelle Williams gives such a superior performance.
Best Director:Sam Mendes
Empire of Light is written and directed by Sam Mendes and is set at the start of the 1980s in England. Osear winner Olivia Colman plays a cinema employee named Hilary who begins a romance with a new colleague, Stephen, played by Micheal Ward. Ward’s Stephen must settle the rising tide of racism that destroyed the U. K. at the time.
Best Actor:Brendan Fraser
Fraser returns to leading man role in the moving preview for Darren Aronofsky’s new movie, The Whale, which also stars Hong Chau, Sadie Sink, Ty Simpkins, and Samantha Morton. Written by playwrighu(劇作家)Samuel D. Hunter as an adaptation of his 2013 stage production of the same name, The Whale is an exercise in sympathy and respect.
Best Actress:Michelle Yeoh
The legendary Malaysian star of iconic films like Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and Crazy Rich Asians has won an award in the Toronto International Film Festival. Yeoh’s work in Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert’s universe–hopping Everything Everywhere All at Once has collected the best reviews of the actress’ career, with many praising her as a front-running racer for the Academy’s Best Actress.
21. Which of the following movies is based on its director’s own experiences?
A. The Fabelmans. B. Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.
C. The Whale. D. Everything Everywhere All at Once.
22. Who is the director of Empire of Light?

Dani breathed in the fresh mountain air. She had to admit that it was beautiful here in Colorado. She and her parents were hiking in Red Rocks Park. The landscape here felt worlds away from Virginia where, until recently, they had lived. Thinking about Virginia made all her hard feelings about the move come rushing back. She missed her friends. Her mom was transferred to Colorado to be a flight instructor at the Air Force Academy. Dani had been giving her parents the cold shoulder ever since.
As she waited for her parents to catch up, she looked up at the blue sky and noticed the cloud-like lines, evidence that an airplane had recently flown overhead. “That is why we are here,” she thought as a wave of pride washed over her. “This is Mom’s dream job.” She knew that she had to stop punishing her parents for the move.
Dani headed back to her parents on the path. But she stopped when she heard a low voice say,” No sudden moves.” When she turned around, Dani was surprised to see a boy about her age standing there looking as alarmed as she felt. “Listen,” he said. At first, Dani couldn’t hear anything. But then she heard it. “A rattlesnake(響尾蛇)?”Dani breathed. Recognizing Dani’s anxiety, the boy encouraged her. “It’s okay,” he said. The rattling intensified, and now Dani saw a big brown–and–yellow snake on the ground.
“Phew!”the boy let out a sigh of relief. “It’s just a bull snake trying to trick us. He wants to convince us he’s a rattlesnake, but he’s not poisonous. I’m Julian. I can teach you how to watch out for all the different wild animals out here, if you want.” “I’d like that,” Dani smiled. “And I’m Dani. My parents and I just moved here from Virginia.”
Then, Dani’s mom and dad appeared. Dani introduced Julian to them and shared their little adventure. The group continued forward, Julian pointing out local plants and wildlife. For the first time, Dani thought maybe this sudden move wasn’t such a terrible thing.
24. How did Dani feel about the move at first?
A. Delighted. B. Upset. C. Surprised. D. Comfortable.
25. What can we know about Dani from Paragraph 2?
A. She wanted to move back by airplane.
B. She had the same dream with her mom.
C. She stopped to punish her parents for the move.
D. She was regretful for her previous behavior.
26. Which one is the influence of Dani’s experience with the snake?
A. It gave her a chance to recognize different wild animals.
B. It made her afraid of rattlesnake ever since.
C. It encouraged her to share the adventure with her parents.
D. It helped her realize that the sudden move was not bad.
27. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A. Do as the Romans do.
B. A friend in need is a friend indeed.
C. Changes can be difficult but rewarding.
D. Never judge a book by its cover.
B 25. D 26. D 27. C

根據(jù)首段中的“Thinking about Virginia made all her hard feelings about the move come rushing back. She missed her friends. Her mom was transferred to Colorado to be a flight instructor at the Air Force Academy. Dani had been giving her parents the cold shoulder ever since.(想到Virginia,她所有關(guān)于搬家的難過(guò)情緒都涌了回來(lái)。她想念她的朋友。她的母親被調(diào)到Colorado,成為空軍學(xué)院的飛行教官。從那以后,丹妮一直對(duì)她的父母冷遇。)”可知,Dani想起Virginia就會(huì)讓她難過(guò)的情緒涌上來(lái),想念自己的朋友,而且由于搬遷,她一直冷遇她的父母。由此可見,Dani對(duì)此一開始覺得很難過(guò)沮喪。故選B項(xiàng)。
【25題詳解】
推理判斷題。根據(jù)第二段中的““That is why we are here,” she thought as a wave of pride washed over her. “This is Mom’s dream job.” She knew that she had to stop punishing her parents for the move.(“這就是我們?cè)谶@里的原因,”她想,一股自豪感沖刷著她。這是媽媽夢(mèng)寐以求的工作。她知道她必須停止懲罰她的父母。)”可知,Dani現(xiàn)在感到不應(yīng)該再去懲罰她的父母了,而且有一種自豪感產(chǎn)生,由此可以推斷,此時(shí)的Dani應(yīng)該是有些后悔以前那樣對(duì)待自己的父母了。故選D項(xiàng)。
【26題詳解】
細(xì)節(jié)理解題。根據(jù)第三段““It’s just a bull snake trying to trick us. He wants to convince us he’s a rattlesnake, but he’s not poisonous. I’m Julian. I can teach you how to watch out for all the different wild animals out here, if you want.” “I’d like that,” Dani smiled. “And I’m Dani. My parents and I just moved here from Virginia.”(“這只是一條試圖欺騙我們的牛蛇。他想讓我們相信他是一條響尾蛇,但他沒有毒。我是朱利安。如果你愿意,我可以教你如何提防這里的各種野生動(dòng)物。”“我很喜歡,”丹尼笑道?!拔沂堑つ?。我和父母剛從弗吉尼亞州搬到這里?!?”和尾段中的“The group continued forward, Julian pointing out local plants and wildlife. For the first time, Dani thought maybe this sudden move wasn’t such a terrible thing.(一行人繼續(xù)前進(jìn), 朱利安指著當(dāng)?shù)氐闹参锖鸵吧鷦?dòng)物。 丹妮第一次想到,也許這個(gè)突然的搬遷并不是一件可怕的事情。)”可知,Dani經(jīng)過(guò)這次團(tuán)體出行的經(jīng)歷,讓她意識(shí)到,突然的搬遷并不是一件可怕的事情。故選D項(xiàng)。
【27題詳解】
主旨大意題。根據(jù)首段中的“Thinking about Virginia made all her hard feelings about the move come rushing back. She missed her friends. Her mom was transferred to Colorado to be a flight instructor at the Air Force Academy. Dani had been giving her parents the cold shoulder ever since.(想到弗吉尼亞,她所有關(guān)于搬家的難過(guò)情緒都涌了回來(lái)。她想念她的朋友。她的母親被調(diào)到科羅拉多州,成為空軍學(xué)院的飛行教官。從那以后,丹妮一直對(duì)她的父母冷遇。)”可知,Dani對(duì)全家搬遷的搬遷很難理解,甚至是冷遇自己的父母,根據(jù)尾段中的“For the first time, Dani thought maybe this sudden move wasn’t such a terrible thing.(丹妮第一次想到, 也許這個(gè)突然的搬遷并不是一件可怕的事情。)”

The goji berry (枸杞), which has been part of Chinese culture, is now being viewed as one of the hottest superfoods available today. This small berry is thought to have anti–ageing powers and has achieved newfound global standing as a superfood. The Chinese call it the goji berry or wolfberry.
The goji berry, which is packed with Vitamin C,is viewed as a fruit. China’s love of the goji berry dates back hundreds of years. At home,Chinese men and women will put dried goji berries over homemade chicken to give themselves a vitamin increase. The goji berry is also viewed as a herb (藥草). It is believed by doctors to improve liver and kidney (肝臟和腎臟) function.
However, there are certain times when doctors will not advise its use as it may exacerbate a patient’s condition. “If a person has a fever or sore throat, I would suggest patients stop taking goji berries during that period of time,” a Chinese doctor said.
Asia’s younger generations have accepted the goji berry, but are trying it in their own ways. For example, members of Gen Z (零零后一代) are now buy “wellness kettes (養(yǎng)生壺)” for their goji berry tea. Their parents recognize these as traditional soup kettles that have been repackaged by brands such as Buydeem and turned into a more Instagram–worthy shade of pink. A 2019 study on Gen 7. in China showed that this generation sees living a healthy life as a key priority, even over money and personal enjoyment.
The berry has also become popular with international consumers. Attracted by the superfood, whose popularity comes on the back of the global awareness of its medical value, people in the West are paying up to $10 for a package of the berries, around three times the price in China.
28. What’s the function of goji berry?
A. It can treat a cold.
B. It makes homemade chicken more delicious.
C. It does good to the liver and kidney.
D. It can bring down a fever.
29. What does the underlined word “exacerbate” in paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. Worsen. B. Skip. C. Prevent. D. Awaken.
30. Why is the example of Gen Z mentioned in paragraph 4?
A. To prove Asia’s younger generations value goji a lot.
B. To argue the traditional soup kettles are better than “wellness kettles“.
C. To confirm the importance of such brands as Buydeem.
D. To show worries from the parents of Gen 7.
31. Why is goji berry so popular around the world?
A. Because it is much cheaper in the West.
B. Because it has an attractive appearance.
C. Because it has a long history.
D. Because it has medical value.
C 29. A 30. A 31. D

根據(jù)第二段中的“The goji berry is also viewed as a herb(藥草). It is believed by doctors to improve liver and kidney (肝臟和腎臟) function.(枸杞也被視為一種草藥。醫(yī)生認(rèn)為它可以改善肝臟和腎臟功能。)”可知,作為中草藥的枸杞,能夠改善人們的肝臟和腎臟。故選C項(xiàng)。
【29題詳解】
詞義猜測(cè)題。根據(jù)第三段中的“However, there are certain times when doctors will not advise its use…(但是,在某些情況下,醫(yī)生不會(huì)建議使用它...)”可知,有時(shí)候醫(yī)生并不建議使用枸杞,由此可推斷,說(shuō)明有時(shí)候枸杞會(huì)有不好的作用,再結(jié)合下文中的列舉的實(shí)例““If a person has a fever or sore throat, I would suggest patients stop taking goji berries during that period of time,” a Chinese doctor said.(“如果一個(gè)人發(fā)燒或喉嚨痛,我會(huì)建議患者在這段時(shí)間內(nèi)停止服用枸杞,”一位中國(guó)醫(yī)生說(shuō)。)” 故選A項(xiàng)。
根據(jù)第四段中的“Asia’s younger generations have accepted the goji berry, but are trying it in their own ways.(亞洲的年輕一代已經(jīng)接受了枸杞,但正在以自己的方式嘗試。)” 故選A項(xiàng)。
根據(jù)尾段中的“Attracted by the superfood, whose popularity comes on the back of the global awareness of its medical value, people in the West are paying up to $10 for a package of the berries, around three times the price in China.(受到超級(jí)食品的歡迎,其受歡迎程度是在全球意識(shí)到其醫(yī)療價(jià)值的背景下,西方人為一包漿果支付高達(dá)10美元,大約是中國(guó)價(jià)格的三倍。)”

Schools across Britain are being asked to take part in a research project known as Teensleep to stagger (錯(cuò)開) their start times to suit the different biological clocks of children, with 10-year-olds starting at 9 am and 15-year-olds starting at 10 am. Scientists believe that the body’s circadian rhythm (生理節(jié)律), which determines sleep-wake patterns over 24-hour periods, varies with a child’s age and that an earlier school start time for all students is not in the best interests of older children. “The research project will sign up 100 schools as part of the biggest study yet into the role that school start times play in the health of students,” said Paul Kelley of the University of Oxford.
“The natural change in the biological clock to later in the 24-hour cycle is particularly obvious in the 14 to 24 age group. The change in the biological clock continues in later middle age, when people usually go back to the naturally earlier start time they felt comfortable with when they were 10-year-old children,” Dr Kelley said.
“By the time you are 18, 19 or 20 you are suffering on average two hours of sleep loss a day and that is increasing so that at the end of the week you have suffered 10 hours of sleep loss. It has a hugely damaging impact on the body,” Dr Kelley told the Seience Festival in Bradford.
“Students lose more sleep than doctors working a 24-hour shift during every school or university week... Schools are starting at any time they choose. There is no justification and no study suggesting that starting earlier is better,” he said. “Most people wake up to alarms because they don’t naturally wake up at the time they go to work, so we are a sleep-deprived (睡眠不足) society and this age group, 14 to 24, is more deprived than any other group of society,” he added.
32. What’s the aim of the research project?
A. To determine the sleep hours of children.
B. To suit the different biological clocks of children.
C. To change the start times of the schools across Britain.
D To study the influence of school times on students’ health.
33. Which of the following statements might Dr. Kelley agree with?
A. 24-year-olds start school the latest.
B. The older students are, the later they start school.
C. The change in the biological clock doesn’t happen in later middle age.
D. An earlier start time suits both the later middle age group and 10-year-olds.
34. What has a great bad influence on the body?
A. Work on weekends.
B. The pressure of study.
C. More and more sleep loss.
D. The earlier school start time.
35. What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A. Schools always start earlier.
B. Students are most sleep-deprived.
C. Students are more stressed than doctors.
D. Sleep deprivation has become a worldwide problem.

The Covid pandemic(新冠肺炎疫情)has meant lots of changes. If you are one of the lucky ones, the worst change you have experienced is more time in front of a screen. ___36___ Here are some excellent tips to help keep your eyes healthy.
Take a break regularly.
Many of us have spent a large amount of time moving from one screen to the next. Your eyes, like all body parts, need care and attention to stay healthy. ___37___ A short walk through a park means your eyes can focus on objects further away, giving them a break. If getting outside isn’t an option, experts say that the “20-20-20“ rule can be effective through a window as well. That means looking at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds, every 20 minutes you look at a screen.
Position your eyes correctly.
___38___ For best eye health, make sure your computer screen is about 50-70 cms, or arm’s length away from your face. The height of the screen can make a difference as well. Try to position the center of your screen slightly below eye level to decrease discomfort. Also, adjust the brightness of your screen to match the level of surrounding light around you. ___39___
___40___
No surprise here. Your body requires proper nutrition(營(yíng)養(yǎng)), or it can’t do its job. Your eyes included. As part of your healthy diet, choose foods rich in antioxidants, like Vitamins A and C; foods like green vegetables and fish. Many foods—especially fatty fish, such as salmon—contain essential omega–3 fatty acids that are important to the health of eyes.
A. Fat for eye health.
B. Keep your eyes clean.
C. That is not good for your eyes.
D. Good news, eye care is fairly simple and free.
E. While some parts are replaceable, you only get one.
F. Each of these small touches can help take the tiredness off your eyes.
G. Many of us cause our own discomfort by not correctly setting up our screens.

故填and。

Dear Linda,
I’m sorry to hear that you’re upset at being laughed at by your classmates because of your obesity. But I think it’s unnecessary for you to care about that.
In my opinion, you are great as you are. After all, it is what you are rather than how you look that counts. On the other hand, I have some advice for you if you want to lose some weight. Firstly, change your eating habits and keep a balanced diet, which will help prevent diseases. Secondly, take exercise regularly, which is a good way for you to get rid of your obesity. Thirdly, make sure you get enough sleep.
If you follow my advice, you are sure to look nice and feel good. I hope you can get out of trouble soon.
Yours,
Li Hua

7-year-old Tommy Wilkinson’s childish desires got the best of him. He envied his best friend Eric over his new fancy bicycle. One day, Tommy gathered the courage to demand the bicycle. His parents refused him. But his dad, Peter Wilkinson, made a suggestion: “You can get the bike if you save up for it.” Without a second thought, Tommy decided to set aside money from his allowance (零花錢) every day to raise the amount he needed: $600. Every day, the little boy made sure he placed some money into his piggy bank.
After almost two years, the day finally arrived. “Finally!” Tommy joyfully shouted as he dropped the piggy bank to the floor. Inside was $830! More than the $600 he was aiming for! Instantly, the excited boy asked his dad to take him to the bike store.
On their way to the store, Tommy accompanied his dad to the supermarket to buy some groceries. They were lining up at the checkout when Tommy noticed an old woman with a little girt in a wheelchair. The old lady dropped her groceries on the road. She looked helpless, and since she was holding the little girl’s wheelchair, she couldn’t pick them up.
Tommy quickly approached the woman. “Hey, let me help you. Where is your car?” he asked the woman whose name was Barbara. The woman told him that they lived across the street and didn’t have a car. “I’ll carry them for you,” Tommy said. On the way, the woman’s granddaughter, Chloe, told Tommy their story. It turned out Chloe injured her leg in a car crash, and her parents died in it. Barbara had to sell her car to pay for Chloe’s surgery and wheelchair. Their story moved Tommy.
After arriving at Barbara’s house, Tommy made an unbelievable offer. “I’ll get you a car!” he shouted with joy. “Not a new one, though. My dad sells used cars and I’ll get you one!” Tommy’s offer really shocked Barbara. “But I don’t think I can afford a car now,” she said.

【答案】 “Don’t worry! My dad will help you get one. I promise!” Tommy said firmly. The boy immediately rushed back to talk to his dad about it. “Well, it’s hard to buy a car if she has no money,” Peter said. Tommy felt disheartened because he had promised Barbara he would get her a car. Then Peter came up with another suggestion. “Maybe I can help her with a monthly payment plan, so she won’t have to pay the whole amount at once. But still, it won’t be easy for her.” Without hesitation, Tommy said, “I can help her with my$830!”
Peter was surprised that Tommy would offer to give all his savings to help Barbara. “Are you sure?” Peter asked. “Yes! She needs a car more than I need a bike, Dad.” Tommy said. Peter was deeply touched by his son’s kindness and agreed. Soon, he helped Barbara get a used car. Tommy was truly happy, and he stopped complaining about the things he didn’t have. Instead, he felt grateful for the good health and love he was blessed with. He realized that the goodness around him was priceless and that money was nothing compared to it.
