Pasang Lhamu Sherpa Akita is an elite (精英) climber and has climbed Mount Qomolang-ma and Chogori (the second highest mount in the world). In 2016, she was chosen as Nation-al Geographic’s Adventurer of the Year. Since the birth of her son, her climbing has taken a back seat, but she would like to set out to inspire him.
Pasang is a skilled climber, having climbed Mount Qomolangma and Chogori. But to get there she had to overcome unbelievable adversity, as in Sherpa culture climbing is viewed as a male activity. People would say she shouldn’t be with men and climb that rock.
Then when she had her first child, Eichan Nurbu, she faced fresh challenges because she was expected to stay at home and look after him as this was viewed as the mother’s responsibility. It’s difficult for her to balance (平衡) this with the climbing. But Pasang said that she wanted to inspire her son and show him that he should follow his dreams, so on his second birthday, November 14, 2019, she climbed Cholatse — a 6,440-meter-high mountain in the Qomolangma region.
Pasang said, “I learned so many things from my mother. She was single. She raised two kids by herself. She never went to school. From her, I saw how a woman can be strong. I have big respect for all the mothers, because the mothers are very strong. They’re always there for their children. They sacrifice (犧牲) their dreams for children. Everybody should have their dreams. Now, I’m a mother, but I’m still having my dreams. Everybody has a right to realize their dreams. Most importantly, I want to inspire my son to follow his dreams.”
4. Why did Pasang decide to start another climb in 2019?

“The mosquitofish is one of the 100 world’s worst invasive (侵入的) species, and present methods to kill it are too expensive. It will take too much time to successfully control the spread of the mosquitofish,” says Giovanni Polverino. “This global pest is a serious threat to many animals living in water. Instead of killing them one by one, we’re presenting an approach that can inform better strategies to control this global pest. We made their worst nightmare become real: a robot that scares the mosquitofish but not the other animals around it.”
In the presence of the robotic fish, mosquitofish would stay closer to each other and spend more time at the center of the testing area. They were unwilling to swim to unknown waters. They also swam more crazily, with frequent and sharp turns, than those who haven’t met the robot. They swam away from the robot and back to their living area. The influence of fear lasted. The scared fish were less active, ate more, and froze longer, presenting signs of anxiety that continued weeks after their last encounter (相遇) with the robot.
For the tadpoles (蝌蚪) the mosquitofish usually hunt for food, the robot’s presence was a change for the better. Tadpoles have poor eyesight. They don’t see the robot well. Because the robot changed the behavior of the mosquitofish, the tadpoles didn’t have predators (捕食者) at their tails anymore and they were more willing to explore in the testing area. “It turned out to be a positive thing for tadpoles. Once freed from the danger of having mosquitofish around, they were not scared anymore. They’re happy.”
After five weeks of brief encounters between the mosquitofish and the robot, the team found that the fish spent more energy towards escaping than reproducing. Male fish’s bodies became thin.
“While successful at preventing mosquitofish, the lab-grown robotic fish is not ready to be put into the wild,” says Maurizio Porfiri. The team will still have to overcome technical challenges.
12. What do we know about mosquitofish?
A. It is the most dangerous species.
B. It costs too much money to feed.
C. It is difficult to be seen by people.
D. It is harmful to many animals in water.
13. What’s the second paragraph mainly about?
A. The mosquitofish’s living area.
B. The uses of the mosquitofish.
C. The mosquitofish’s reaction to the robotic fish.
D. The encounter between mosquitofish and tadpoles.
14. What's the benefit of the robotic fish’s presence for the tadpoles?
A. They had better behavior.
B. They had no more killers.
C. They were more adventurous.
D. They could see the robot clearly.
15. Which can be the best title for the text?
A. Robots Use Fear To Fight Invasive Fish

D. Robots Fish Are Hunting And Killing Mosquitofish

One hot summer, several years ago, my mother and I were taking a trip by train. But first we had to take a bus into the city to the station to catch the train. Since times were hard and money was very tight, we simply could not afford any extras. We packed a large lunch bag of snacks and sandwiches, and had a small cooler filled with sodas to get us through the trip.
There were still many miles from the train station when the bus suddenly completely broke down. The poor driver apologized over and over that they were sending another bus to rescue us.
We were allowed to get off the bus and stand outside, as it was very hot inside the bus. Several of the passengers on the bus were elderly people, and as we waited in the summer heat, my mother became concerned about them.
She told me, “Let’s hand out some of these sodas and sandwiches.” “But what will we eat later?” I asked. She smiled and told me, “No worries, we will be taken care of one way or another.” The other passengers, especially the seniors, were so grateful to get the cold sodas and sandwiches, which surely made us feel good that we could help! Even I became very happy because the seniors told me that I was the sweetest little gentleman.
When we finally arrived at the station, we were upset to discover that we had missed the train and had to wait until the following day to catch the next one. An impatient woman at the ticket counter(柜臺(tái)) was handing out discount vouchers(代金券) for meals to some passengers, and my mother asked if we could also have one. “No,” she shouted. “Please wait a minute. We were a little taken aback by that, but said nothing. Having handed out most food and drinks, nowhere to live, we could not help worrying about our situation.

【答案】A while later, the woman at the ticket counter suddenly called to us, “Hey, you two, come over here!” Feeling surprised, we walked to the counter. She told us that she knew what we had done from the bus driver. My mother told her we just wanted to help. “Thank you. It was really nice of you to hand out food and drinks,” she said, somewhat more kindly. “We want to help you back. We are sending you both to a hotel for the night. Here is some money for the taxi to get there, and back here again tomorrow morning, and some extra money for dinner tonight and breakfast tomorrow.”
We were so surprised and thanked her for her kindness. “That’s OK,” she said, with a smile. She appreciated what we had done for the other passengers. In her opinion, most people would have only thought of themselves. Working there, she often only saw the worst side of people-tired, complaining and rude, which made her rude as well. She was sorry for her rudeness when talking to us at first. “It’s nice to know there are still good people out there,” she smiled.
