Do you get nervous thinking about a coming math test? If yes, you are far from alone. Math anxiety has become a common condition among students around the world. Students in countries with higher levels of math anxiety may probably get lover math grades, according to a study published by the National Academy of Sciences on Feb 15.
Math anxiety —— a negative emotional reaction to the core subject ——causes fear. physical suffering and behavior problems among young pupils, according to a University of Cambridge study. Some people also experience physical symptoms such as sweaty palms or a racing heart. They may then try to avoid every situation involving numbers, meaning they are held back from pursuing careers related to this subject, such as technology or engineering, according to The Guardian.
Relief comes from the fact that those with math anxiety aren't destined(注定的)to be bad at math. “If a child has math anxiety, don’t think that they’re not good at math. They may have had a really bad experience with math and there are ways to improve math achievement, ”Daniel Ansari, the senior author of the study told The London Free Press.
Also, there are waves to manage your stress related to math. If you're feeling stressed before a math exam, it may help to spend a few minutes exploring those feelings before the exam begins. “It's about making sure you're interpreting your feelings correctly," Sian Beilock, a cognitive(認知的)scientist told the BBC. “Just because you have a fast heartbeat and sweaty palms, that does not necessarily mean you will fail. ”
Math doesn't come easy, no matter how clever you are. Leonardo da Vinci, the famous Italian artist, was a huge fan of mathematics. But his notebooks show that Da Vinci couldn't do fractions(分數(shù) ). He could never grasp, for instance, that dividing a number by one-quarter is the same as multiplying by four, resulting in a higher number than the original.
8. What do we know about math anxiety?
A. It can cause unpleasant symptoms both mentally and physically.
B. It is most commonly seen among teenagers.
C. People who are good at math don't experience math anxiety.
D. Math anxiety leads to people struggling in their career.
9. What does Daniel Ansari's study imply(暗示)?
A. Math anxiety may contribute to better grades.
B. Students with math anxiety may have higher cognitive abilities.
C. Bad experience with math can cause cognitive disadvantages.
D. Math anxiety does not suggest the ability to solve math problems.
10. How should you deal with the stress related to math according to the article?
A. Practice more before you take math exams.
B. Learn to understand your feelings.
C. Ask cognitive experts for help.
D. Take all nervous energy as a challenge.
11. Why is Leonardo da Vinci's story mentioned?
A. To show da Vinci's math anxiety is very serious.
B. To explain why math is a particularly difficult subject.
C. To show that studying math isn't easy.
D. To suggest a way to solve math anxiety.
D
Many studies have shown the learning-by-teaching effect. Students who spend time teaching what they've learned show better understanding and ability to remember knowledge than students who simply spend the same time re-studying. But why does teaching help?
Researchers did a study to test their idea that teaching improves the teacher's learning because it forces the teacher to find back what they've learned. They asked 124 students to spend ten minutes studying a text with numbers on a topic which is completely new to them. They told the students they could take notes while studying, but would teach the material afterwards without notes. After studying the text, the students were divided into four groups. In one group the students spent five minutes giving a lesson on the study material without notes. The other groups either spent the same time completing arithmetic(算術(shù))problems, teaching with a script(講稿)or writing down all they could remember from the text——a form of recalling practice. A week later, all the students took a surprise test of their knowledge and understanding of the text.
The important finding is that the teaching-without-notes group and the recalling-practice group performed better than the group that completed arithmetic problems and the group that taught with a script.
The researchers said the result shows that the benefits of the learning-by-teaching method are caused by recalling practice; that is, the learning by-teaching method works only when the teaching includes recalling the taught materials.
The new findings have a practical suggestion for how the learning-by-teaching method is used in education. In order to make sure that students learn and remember an educational material, they should internalize(內(nèi)化)the material before presenting it to others, rather than depend on notes during the presentation process.
12. Why does the author give a question in Paragraph 1?
A. To introduce the topic. B. To look for readers' answer.
C. To keep a sense of mystery. D. To show off his knowledge.
13. What is Paragraph 2 mainly about?
A. Why the study started. B. How the study was done.
C. How many people joined in the study. D. What conclusion the researchers made.
14. What should be stressed in school education according to the author?
A. Previewing-by-teaching. B. Note-taking.
C. Learning-by-teaching. D. Mind-mapping.
15. What does the text probably talk about?
A. A history textbook. B. A detective novel. C. A guideline. D. A science study.

How to make friends at a new school
Starting with a new school can be difficult. Everything seems to be different, and you don't even know where to go for your own classes. Making new friends can be hard, too. __16
Be yourself.
Never change who you are to try and fit in. If some people don't accept you, they're not the kind of friends you need. People often stay together because they have similar interests. 17
18
Remember to be nice to the people you meet at your new school. If you think that you will say something that may make them feel sad, do not say anything and just nod your head if they talk to you. Also, remember to be as helpful as possible!
Believe in yourself.
A smile goes a long way. When you walk in the halls, don't keep your eyes on the floor. 19 If you see someone you know, smile or say“Hi”. Introduce yourself. Tell them your name and where you're from.
Remember people's names.
You like it when people use your name, and so do other people. People may become angry if you just begin by saying“Hey”each time. 20 You'd be surprised how often this might come in handy.
A. Raise your head and make eye contact with other people.
B. For example, someone who does lots of sport may make friends with those who also run or swim a lot.
C. Join in after-school activities you like.
D. However, if you use the following skills, you can quickly turn some of those strangers into friends.
E. Be friendly to others.
F. Besides, ask them in a kind way if they have a nickname.
G. Don't sit at the back of the classroom where other people don't notice you!

When Gloria Estefan started primary school, she could not read, write nor speak English. She felt lost, unhappy and completely frightened. However, someone changed her life--her English teacher, Mrs. Collins. Her family had left Cuba in 1959 when she was only a year old in the hope of finding a better life in America. Initially they moved to Miami where the family settled in a set of apartments with other Cuban women and children who had immigrated.
The women were close-knit and supportive. While she felt safe, she was also isolated. They all spoke Spanish, and she rarely heard English. On her very first day in school, which she was looking forward to, she was completely shocked. She came home and told her mother that she had learnt her first English word“stupid”. It was the nickname a boy had given her.
In every way possible, she was set apart from her classmates. She was the only panic and non-white student. She also found it difficult to grasp the English language as it was her second language. The culture, her school friends and the food they ate were different from hers. As such, she was set apart from her classmates.
One person made that year bearable for her, Mrs. Collins. She was young and African American, so she understood how Gloria felt as she was the (only non-white student in class. Mrs. Collins never doubted that Gloria could catch up with the other students in time.
Still, the teasing continued. The boy who called her stupid would not stop laughing at her for her accent. He was a good student and the proud holder of the class's reading award. It was an honour given periodically to a student, based on excellence in schoolwork, participation and homework. Gloria. wanted that long-waited award.
注意

故選A。
4.A 5.C????????6.B????7.D
根據(jù)第一段的“Each tomato would be given a name of a person that the child hated.
根據(jù)第二段的“Days passed, and the children started to get annoyed because the rotten (腐爛的) tomatoes let out terrible smell.
根據(jù)第一段的“Each tomato would be given a name of a person that the child hated. 和第二段的“When the day came, every child brought some tomatoes with the name of the people he or she hated.
根據(jù)最后一段的“The terrible smell of hatred will pollute your heart, and you will carry it with you wherever you go. If you cannot stand the smell of rotten tomatoes for just one week, can you imagine what it is like to have the smell of hatred in your heart for your lifetime?
8.A???9.D????10.B????11.C
根據(jù)第二段首句“Math anxiety — a negative emotional reaction to the core subject — causes fear, physical suffering and behavior problems among young pupils, according to a University of Cambridge study.
根據(jù)第三段中“‘If a child has math anxiety, don’t think that they’re not good at math. They may have had a really bad experience with math and there are ways to improve math achievement, ’ Daniel Ansari, the senior author of the study told The London Free Press.
根據(jù)第四段中“If you’re feeling stressed before a math exam, it may help to spend a few minutes exploring those feelings before the exam begins. ‘It’s about making sure you’re interpreting your feelings correctly, ’ Sian Beilock…(如果你在數(shù)學(xué)考試前感到有壓力,在考試開始前花幾分鐘探究這些感覺可能會有幫助?!
最后一段首句“Math doesn’t come easy, no matter how clever you are.
12.A????13.B????14.C????15.D
根據(jù)第一段第二句話“Students who spend time teaching what they’ve learned show better understanding and ability to remember knowledge than students who simply spend the same time re-studying. (花時間教授所學(xué)知識的學(xué)生比只花同樣時間重新學(xué)習(xí)的學(xué)生表現(xiàn)出更好的理解和記憶知識的能力)”和第二段第一句話“Researchers did a study to test their idea that teaching improves the teacher’s learning because it forces the teacher to find back what they’ve learned. 故選A。
根據(jù)第二段第二句話“They asked 124 students to spend ten minutes studying a text with numbers on a topic which is completely new to them. (他們讓124名學(xué)生花十分鐘學(xué)習(xí)一篇關(guān)于一個對他們來說完全陌生的主題的帶有數(shù)字的課文)”,第四句話“After studying the text, the students were divided into four groups. (在學(xué)習(xí)課文后,學(xué)生們被分為四組)”以及最后一句話“A week later, all the students took a surprise test of their knowledge and understanding of the text.
根據(jù)最后一段“The new findings have a practical suggestion for how the learning-by-teaching method is used in education. In order to make sure that students learn and remember an educational material, they should internalize (內(nèi)化) the material before presenting it to others, rather than depend on notes during the presentation process.
16.D????17.B????18.E????19.A????20.F
16.上文“Everything seems to be different, and you don’t even know where to go for your own classes. Making new friends can be hard, too. 所以此處需承上啟下,引出下文要講的具體方法,D項“However, if you use the following skills, you can quickly turn some of those strangers into friends.

Mrs. Collins encouraged her to compete for the reading award. With this kind teacher cheering her on, she gained confidence and language skills. She made so rapid progress that by mid-year, she was well on her way to speaking English fluently and had a good grasp of reading. Besides, she did well in all the other subjects. She came to school early every day, participated actively in class activities and finished homework on time. What’s more, she made more and more friends in her class.
The award ceremony was coming up. She worked as hard as she could. When Mrs. Collins announced Gloria as the winner in front of the whole class, it was her proudest moment. She immediately took the reading award right out of that boy’s hot little hands. The boy was shocked and unwillingly handed it to her. She felt so happy for herself, owing her success to her teacher, Mrs. Collins. This served as a motivation for Gloria who worked even harder in school and earned more “A” grades.
