A
In 2012,an iPhone fell into my hands. This smart technology seemed like the entrance to only fun and positive things like chatting with friends and blogging.
However, seven years later,I became limited to it.Recent reports show that I'm not alone.According to a study,an average American spends five hours a day on smart devices (裝置) and about 2.5 of these hours are spent on messaging, social media and entertainment apps.
It's hard to explain when the love and joy I felt for my iPhone turned into dependency.I fell asleep to my phone every night and woke to it each morning.I checked the weather app every morning before I chose how to dress for the day.I used it to help me find my way through a city.I checked my email box every time I picked my phone up.
Just like with any addiction,my phone dependency began to influence my life. While spending time with family,I'd stare at a small screen on my lap instead of being involved in communicating with my loved ones.At work,my productivity levels dropped. And then,my four-year relationship came to an end.
Now,I move through life with more goals and intention.I've cut back on my time and attention to my phone.Instead,I focus my efforts on being as present as possible.
I hope you'll take a deep look at your own phone habits and reevaluate how important a role you are letting it play in your life.Whether or not you've reached a place in your life where your screen time is problematic, there's no harm in carefully giving your current practices some thought.

As data and identity theft becomes more and more common, the market is growing for biometric (生物測量) technologies — like fingerprint scans — to keep others out of private e-spaces.At present, these technologies are still expensive, though.
Researchers from Georgia Tech say that they have come up with a low-cost device (裝置) that gets around this problem:a smart keyboard. This smart keyboard precisely measures the cadence (節(jié)奏) with which one types and the pressure fingers apply to each key.The keyboard could offer a strong layer of security by analyzing things like the force of a user's typing and the time between key presses. These patterns are unique to each person. Thus, the keyboard can determine people's identities, and by extension, whether they should be given access to the computer it's connected to — regardless of whether someone gets the password right.
It also doesn't require a new type of technology that people aren't already familiar with.Everybody uses a keyboard and everybody types differently.
In a study describing the technology, the researchers had 100 volunteers type the word "touch"four times using the smart keyboard.Data collected from the device could be used to recognize different participants based on how they typed, with very low error rates. The researchers say that the keyboard should be pretty straightforward to commercialize and is mostly made of inexpensive, plastic like parts. The team hopes to make it to market in the near future.
5. Why do the researchers develop the smart keyboard? ______
A. To reduce pressure on keys.
B. To improve accuracy in typing
C. To replace the password system.
D. To cut the cost of e-space protection.
6. What makes the invention of the smart keyboard possible? ______
A. Computers are much easier to operate.
B. Data security measures are guaranteed.
C. Typing patterns vary from person to person.
D. Fingerprint scanning techniques develop fast.
7. What do the researchers expect of the smart keyboard? ______
A. It'll be made of plastics. B. It'll reach consumers soon.
C. It'll help speed up typing. D. It'll be environment-friendly.
8. Where is this text most likely from? ______
A. A diary. B. A guidebook C. A novel. D. A magazine.
C
If your in-box is currently reporting unread messages in the hundreds or thousands, youmight have a hard time believing the news:e-mail is on the decline.
At first thought, that might seem to be the case. The incoming generation, after all, doesn't do e-mail.They might have an account. They use it only as we would use a faxmachine:as a means to fulfill thesign-up requirements of websites. They rarely check it,though.
Today's instant electronic memos—such as texting and online messages—are moredirect, more concentrated, and more efficient. They go without the salutation(稱呼語)andthe signoff(簽收);we already know the "to"and "from".Many corporations are moving tomessaging networks for exactly that reason:more signal, less noise and less time. This trendis further evidence that store-and-forward systems such as e-mail and voicemail are outdated.
The coming of the mobile era accounts for the decline of e-mail.Instant writtenmessages bring great convenience to people. They can deal with them at about any time:before a movie,in a taxi, waiting for lunch. And because these messages are very brief, they're suitable for smart phone typing.
D oes this mean e-mail is on its way to the dustbin of digital history? Not necessarily.E-mail still has certain advantages. On the other hand, tweets and texts feel —youread them, and then they're gone, into an endless string.E-mail still feels like something youhave and that you can file, search and return to later. It's easy to imagine that it will continueto feel more appropriate for formal communications:agreements, important news, and longerexplanations.
So,e-mail won't go away completely.Remember,we've been through a changelike this not so long ago:when e-mail was on the rise, people said that postal mail was dead. That's not how it works.Postal mail found its smaller market, and so will e-mail.There is no doubt that people will keep adding new alternatives to satisfy their needs.
9. What would the incoming generation like to do with their e-mail accounts? ______
A. Check bank accounts.
B. Send short messages.
C. Fill in some requirement forms.
D. Communicate with their colleagues.
10. Which of the following is mainly discussed in paragraphs 3 and 4? ______
A. The likes and dislikes of the young generation.
B. The possible reasons behind the decline of e-mail.
C. The rapid development of e-communication channels.
D. Evidence of the uncertain future of easily-consumed messages.
11. What does the underlined word "ephemeral" in paragraph 5 mean? ______
A. Short-lived. B. Randomly-written.
C. Hardly-recognized. D. Automatically-sending.
12. What can we learn from the passage ? ______
A. Pride goes before a fall.
B. Change is the only constant.
C. Time and tide wait for no man.
D. Everything is difficult at the beginning.

As data and identity theft becomes more and more common, the market is growing for biometric technologies-like fingerprint scans-to keep others out of private e-spaces.At present, these technologies are still costly, though.???????????????????????????? Researchers from Georgia Tech say that they have come up with a low-cost device that gets around this problem??????????????????:a smart keyboard.??
The keyboard could offer a strong layer of security by analyzing things like the force of a user's typing and the time between key presses.???????????????????????? Thus, the keyboard can determine people's identities, and by extension, whether they should be given access to the computer it's connected to- regardless of whether someone gets the password right.?????????????????????????
The team hopes to make it to market in the near future.??????????
As?data?and?identity?theft?becomes?more?and?more?common,the?market?is?growing?for?biometric(生物測量)technologies?-?like?fingerprint?scans?-?to?keep?others?out?of?private?e-spaces.At?present,these?technologies?are?still?expensive,though. A.A diary.一篇日記;B.A guidebook.一本指南;C.A novel.一本小說;D.A magazine.
9~12.【答案】C、B、A、B
They use it only as we would use a fax machine??????????:as a means to communicate with old-school folks like their parents or to fulfill the sign-up requirements of Web sites.
Today's instant electronic memos - such as texting and Facebook and Twitter messages - are more direct, more concentrated, more efficient. This trend is further evidence that store-and-forward systems such as e-mail and voicemail are outdated. The coming of the mobile era is responsible for the decline of e-mail.
(3)A. On the other hand, tweets and texts feel ephemeral - you read them, then they're gone, into an endless string,e-mail still feels like something you have and that you can file, search and return to later. "???????????????????????????? A.Short-lived短暫存在;B.Randomly-written隨機寫的;C.Hardly- recognized幾乎認不出來;D.Automatically-sending自動發(fā)送。故選A。
(4)B. It's easy to imagine that it will continue to feel more appropriate for formal communications??????????????:agreements, important news, longer explanations. Remember,we've been through a transition ????????(過度) like this not so long ago?????:when e-mail was on the rise, people said that postal mail was dead. That's not how it works.Postal mail found its smaller market, and so will e-mail.New technology rarely replaces old one completely?????????????????????????????;it just adds new alternatives.
