She went to practice early in the morning. She was about to take off her running shoes when she found she had forgotten her sprinting shoes. Sprinting shoes are special because they’re small, light and have spikes on the bottom.
When her coach found out that she had forgotten her sprinting shoes he got mad. He ordered her to run laps around the track. So, off she went. Soon, she was running with other people who were on their long-distance practice runs.
The runners were moving fast. It surprised the coach to see that this girl could keep up. The long-distance coach asked the sprinting coach, “Who is that?” “That’s one of my sprinters,” he said. The two coaches were shocked to see the group of runners coming around the final corner with my sister in the lead!
Another girl was close to her for a while, but because of her sprinting ability, my sister seemed to just pull away from her. Her first time running a long-distance race and she came in first! The two coaches approached my sister. They were about to congratulate her when they looked down and realized she wasn’t wearing any shoes!
“Well, you told me to run and I thought you meant right away, so I just got up and ran,” she explained. “I can’t believe how comfortable it is to run without my feet stuffed inside those little sprinting shoes.”
From that moment on, my sister’s sprinting days were over. She was a natural long distance runner. She works hard and hopes to go to the Olympics one day. Who knows what might happen?

How do you treat your books? Do you use a bookmark to avoid folding(折疊)a page and keep your books tidily on a shelf? Or perhaps you pay less attention to their condition — you’re happy to take notes down the margins(頁(yè)邊空白) of a page. What’s your idea — do you think they should always be kept in good condition?
Yes. Books deserve our respect.
It is important to care for your books. This is especially true if the book costs a lot of money or is given to you as a present. It also won’t last long if they are damaged(破壞). If a book is full of ripped(撕破的) pages, it is less possible that a friend will want to pick it up and read. If you donate it to a charity shop, it is less possible that someone will buy it. Over time, treating books badly could become a bad habit.
NO. It doesn’t matter if you just read.
One of the great things about an actual book is that readers can make it their own with notes. If it’s a gift, you can write a nice message. It can make a book feel personal and special to you. It doesn’t matter if this means that a book isn't in perfect condition — you can always buy a new copy if the old one gets too damaged. In the end, writers just want people to read their stories: they don’t mind how or where people do it.

A. it costs a lot of money B. it is a present
C. it is full of ripped pages D. it is from a charity shop

A. they like untidy books better than those in good condition B. they would rather buy new copies than read old ones
C. they think books with messages may make people less interested D. they care more about writers’ stories than how books are kept

1. —Do you and your brother have the same hobby?
—No. I like playing________chess while my brother likes playing________baseball.
A. /; / B. /; the C. the; / D. the; the
【答案】A
2. Great changes ___________ in our hometown.
A. has happened B. has taken place C. have taken place D. have been happened
表示發(fā)生變化,用take place,主語(yǔ)Great changes是復(fù)數(shù),因此助動(dòng)詞用have。故選C。
3. —What will the weather be like in Nanjing this weekend?
—It will snow and the temperature will fall ________ zero at -6°C.
A. under B. over C. above D. below

under在下面;over在…… 根據(jù)“It will snow and the temperature will fall...zero at -6°C.”
4. — Simon, what do I need to take for the hiking?
— You’d better ________ more water than usual. It’s hot today.
A. to take B. take C. taking D. took
根據(jù)短語(yǔ)had better do sth.
5. The bus ________ on the half way and I had to wait for ten minutes.
A. fell down B. came down
C. broke down D. calmed down
fell down倒塌,跌倒;came down下來(lái);broke down發(fā)生故障;calmed down冷靜。根據(jù)“I had to wait for ten minutes”可知,我不得不等了十分鐘,推測(cè)公車在半路上出故障了。
6. —When did the classroom have a power cut?
—This morning, while we _______ a physics lesson.

7. —You ________ play with fire.

A. shouldn’t; must B. may not; can C. mustn’t; can D. may not; must
【答案】C

Who would have guessed that a little mistake would take my sister from being a good sprinter to being a great long- distance runner?
