Thomas Lanier Williams was born on March 26, 1911 in the Mississippi town of Columbus In half a century. He created some of the most remarkable characters in his more than 70 plays, including Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, Sweet Bird of Youth and The Night of the I guano.
“He changed the history of American drama with his first two plays because they were so different.” says Kenneth Holditch, editor of The Collected Plays of Tennessee Williams. “He broke free of what had been going on in the 1920s and the 1930s and gave us a wonderful understanding of human nature and human tragedy(悲劇)…”
Holditch is referring to The Glass Menagerie and Summer and Smoke. The first play won the New York Drama Critics` Circle Award for best play of 1945. It tells the story of the shy, physically disabled girl, Laura.
Williams sympathy for the underdogs grew out of his own experience. His father drank heavily and argued bitterly with his mother. When the young boy began writing poetry, he laughed at hum. In a 1973 interview, Williams told filmmaker Harry Rasky that only h?s sister Rose became his closest friend.
“My sister and I were unusually close as children.” Williams recalled. “My sister and I grew so used to being company for each other that we tended to rely on each other’s companionship rather than seeking friends outside the household.”
By the time he changed his name to Tennessee and moved to New Orleans in 1939, his sister Rose became mentally ill. Tennessee was not at home when this happened, and he always felt somehow responsible for that. So he kept writing about her. The image of Rose turned up in every single play he wrote. For example, Laura in Menagerie was modeled on Rose. At the end of the pla, he wrote:”…everything reminded me of her. Perhaps it was a families’ music perhaps only a little piece of glass…”

On Tuesday, NASA sent up a test satellite from New Zealand as part of its experiment with a new orbit around the moon that it hopes to use in the coming years to land astronauts on the lunar surface. If the rest of the mission is successful. the satellite will be the first to take the new path around the moon and will send back vital information for at least six months. However, getting the 25-kilogram satellite into orbit will take more than four months and be done in three stages.
First, the small Electron rocket was launched from New Zealand Just nine minutes later, the second stage rocket called Photon separated and went into orbit around the earth
Over the next live days. Photon`s engines are scheduled to fire on a regular basis to raise its orbit further and further from the earth. Six days alter the launch. Photon’s engines ail fire a final time, allowing it to escape the earth’s orbit and head for the moon.
Finally, Photon will release the satellite, which has its own small engine that won’t much energy as it travels toward the moon over four months, with a few planned course corrections along the way.
“The new orbit seems like a stretched-out egg with one end passing close to the moon and the other lar from it.” NASA wrote on its website. “Thus path-finding satellite will be put in a sweet spot in space — where the pull of gravity from the earth and the moon interacts to allow for a stable orbit.”
NASA spokesperson Morgan Bailey said that eventually. NASA plans to put a space station called Gateway into the orbital path, from which astronauts can travel to the mon’s surface as part of its Artemis program.
“One of the advantages of the orbit is that a space station should be able to stay in continuous communication with the earth,” said Morgan Bailey. “Because it will avoid being blocked by the moon.”
8. How long will it take NASA to get the satellite to “the sweet spot”?
A. About six days. B. At least six months.
C. Around five days. D. More than four months.
9. When will the satellite’s engine start working?

C. The moon. D. The new orbit.
11. What is an advantage of putting Gateway in the new orbit?
A. It will be able to escape the pull of the earth
B. It will be the closest to the moon all the time.
C. It does not need coactions to stay in the orbit.
D. It can commurucate conveniently with the earth.
D 9. C 10. C 11. D

On the day of the San Francisco Giants’ World Series parade(游行). I made my way to the corner of the street where I was sure I could have a good position to watch the player drive by in their cars. Then the parade started and thousands of arms extended towards the sky. And just like that, none of us could see the parade. Only our phones could.
Don’t get me wrong. I needed my phone to keep in touch with my colleagues, friends and my family. But once the parade began, my phone went from being a useful tool to being a distraction.
I knew the photos I’d take with my phone’s camera would pale in comparison to the footage I’d see on the news that night. Most importantly, I knew this gathering of thousands of people in the streets was really more about experiencing the energy than recording the visuals. All of that pre—parade analysis went out of the window once the first band marched past me. The recording device was just too close. I just couldn’t resist. I took about 40 photos and shot about 20 minutes of video. Then I stared at my phone for 30 minutes and missed the experience I was there for in the first place.
A few decades ago, my friend Isaac and I cut school and went to watch the same parade. Thus was before smartphones and neither of us had a camera. I don’t remember a single visual from that day. But I do remember the feeling. I especially remember the feeling I had after I arrived home to find my parents, who had no way of reaching me all day, wanting just inside my front door.
Of course, it is OK to take a few photos on special occasions. But it seems that we’ve developed such a fear of missing the photo opportunity that we have missed the real life moments as they pass across the two inch screens on our phones.
12. What does the underlined word “distraction” in paragraph 2 probably mean?
A. Something that makes you feel extremely angry.
B. Something relaxing you do alter you have been working.
C. A game or an activity that provides entertainment and pleasure.
D. A thing that takes your attention away from what you want to focus on.
13. What had the author planned to do before he went to the parade?
A. Keep his phone in his pants. B. Take as many photos as possible.
C. Throw his phone out of the window. D. Study the videos just for 30 minutes
14. What does the author want to tell us in paragraph 4?
A. He missed his parents very much. B. Life in the past was much happier.
C. It was inconvenient without phones. D. It is important to experience the visuals.
15. How is text developed?
A. By reasoning. B. By giving examples.
C. By analyzing data. D. By experimenting.

Being honest may not get you a lot of friends, but it will get you the right ones. That’s true, so you should pursue authentic positivity in your friendships, the opposite of toxic (有毒的) positivity that would have you encouraging friends in all things, regardless of what you might feel or observe or know about the challenges of life. ____16____
1. Ask questions.
A feature of authentic positivity is a curious mindset, a mentality where you are less locked into “telling it like it is” and more interested in wondering and exploring the possibilities together with your friend. ____17____ If your friendship has a history of welcome advice-giving, your question could be “Are you looking for ideas, or do you just want me to listen?”
2. ____18____
“That’s so disappointing” is sometimes the most positive thing you can say to your friend when they are struggling. Resisting the urge to say “It’s all going to work out; don’t worry” shows your friend that you see them in their pain, and that you are available to support them here and now. ____19____ You can use “yes/and” statements like “What happened at work is so frustrating—AND I know how creative you are, so you’ll find a way to move forward.”
3. Learn to apologize —and ask for an apology.
____20____ That includes you, too. Being authentic in a friendship means having the freedom to say to a friend, “I’m sorry I hurt you.” It also means being able to say, “Your words/ actions hurt me.” Friendships that stand the test of time have room for mistakes, and for repair.
A. Name hard truths.
B. Don’t disappoint your friend.
C. Every friend misses the mark sometimes.
D. Instead, friends should be authentic and positive.
E. Here are three ways to be an authentically positive friend.
F. But that doesn’t mean you need to focus on the negative all the time.
G. Positive friends ask each other questions, and listen deeply to the answers.

上文“That’s true, so you should pursue authentic positivity in your friendships, the opposite of toxic (有毒的) positivity that would have you encouraging friends in all things, regardless of what you might feel or observe or know about the challenges of life. (這是事實(shí),所以你應(yīng)該在你的友誼中追求真正的積極性,而不是有害的積極性。這種積極性會(huì)讓你在所有事情中鼓勵(lì)朋友,無論你對(duì)生活中的挑戰(zhàn)有什么樣感受、觀察或了解)”強(qiáng)調(diào)了友誼中追尋真正積極的好處,下文段落小標(biāo)題“Ask questions(提問問題)”和“Learn to apologize —and ask for an apology. (學(xué)習(xí)道歉——并要求道歉)”詳細(xì)介紹了如何成為一個(gè)真正積極的朋友。空格處于段尾,往往起著總結(jié)上文或承上啟下的作用。E選項(xiàng)“Here are three ways to be an authentically positive friend. (以下是三個(gè)可以讓你成為一個(gè)真正積極的朋友的方法)”呼應(yīng)下文每一段的小標(biāo)題,故答案為E。
【17題詳解】
本段的小標(biāo)題“Ask questions. (提問問題)”及空后“If your friendship has a history of welcome advice-giving, your question could be “Are you looking for ideas, or do you just want me to listen?” (如果你的友誼存在一段可提供建議的歷史,你的問題可以是“你是在尋求建議,還是只是想讓我聽聽?”)”都在介紹要學(xué)會(huì)提問題。G項(xiàng)“Positive friends ask each other questions, and listen deeply to the answers. (積極的朋友會(huì)問對(duì)方問題并認(rèn)真傾聽對(duì)方的回答)”符合本段主題,所以答案定位G。
18題詳解】
空格處于小標(biāo)題的位置,所以應(yīng)該和其他段落的小標(biāo)題保持一致,都是祈使句結(jié)構(gòu),因此答案定位到A和B選項(xiàng)。由本段““That’s so disappointing” is sometimes the most positive thing you can say to your friend when they are struggling. Resisting the urge to say “It’s all going to work out; don’t worry” shows your friend that you see them in their pain, and that you are available to support them here and now. (有時(shí)候“這太令人失望了”這句話是你在朋友掙扎時(shí)對(duì)他們說的最積極的話。克制住說“一切都會(huì)好起來的;別擔(dān)心”的沖動(dòng),讓你的朋友知道你看到了他們的痛苦,你可以隨時(shí)支持他們)”可知,作為真正積極的朋友,作者建議我們要敢于說出真實(shí)的情況。A項(xiàng)“Name hard truths. (說出殘酷的真相)”符合。選項(xiàng)中的“hard”呼應(yīng)本段形容詞“disappointing”,故選A。

My Summer Vacation
I spent an unforgettable summer vacation this year. However, a week-long visit to a farm left me the deepest impression.
That’s a sunny day. I took a bus to a lovely old farm, where I stayed for a week to experience the rural life. The landscape had an unworldly beauty. Every morning, I woke up very early. While walking on the country road, I relaxed myself a lot. Then I went to the river for fishing. Late in the afternoon, I fed the lovely chickens and ducks by the river while enjoying the amazing sunset.
The life offered me a chance to get close to nature. I felt really peaceful in my heart.
