Ready to jump into gardening? It can be a little frightening at first, but gardening is an extremely rewarding hobby to get into.On this page, we'll introduce the basics of vegetable gardening and planning: how to pick the right site for your garden, how to create the right size garden, and how to select which vegetables to grow.
Pick the right location
Picking a good location for your garden is absolutely key. Here are a few tips for beginners to choose a good site: First, plant in a sunny location, because most vegetables need at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day.Secondly, plant in a place without too much water.Thirdly, find an environment that is not likely to change.Avoid places that receive strong winds, floods or too much foot traffic.
Choosing a small piece of land
Remember: It's better to be proud of a small garden than be frustrated by a big one! One of the most common errors that beginners make is planting too much or too soon.Plan your garden with care.Start small, and only grow what you know you'll eat.
Choosing vegetables
Many vegetables are common, productive plants that are relatively easy to grow.It would be wise to contact your state's Cooperative Extension Service (CES) to find out what plants grow best in your area.Choose what you (and your family) like to eat.If no one likes Brussels sprouts, don't plant them! Be aware of how many vegetables your family will eat.Be careful not to overplant.

Perhaps no one knows the power of imagination better than Chinese writer Liu Cixin.Until four years ago,Liu worked full-time as a computer engineer at a power plant in Shanxi Province. He only wrote science fiction in his spare time. But it was during this time that Liu's imagination took flight. He did what he might never have the chance to do in real life—wander in space, fight with aliens, and visit planets light-years away.
But even with such a powerful imagination,Liu probably hadn't expected that he would become the first Asian to win the Hugo Award, science fiction's highest prize,in 2015.Perhaps neither did he think that former US president Barack Obama would read his novel The Three-Body Problem, nor that on Nov.9 in Washington,D.C.he would win the 2018 Arthur C.Clarke Award for Imagination in Service to Society. It's the first time a Chinese writer has ever won the award.
In his acceptance speech,Liu said that he owed his imagination to Arthur C.Clarke (1917-2008),a famous UK sci-fi author. He said that reading Clarke's 1968 classic novel 2001:A Space Odyssey in the early 1980s had a great effect on him.
“My mind opened up like never before.I felt like a narrow river finally seeing the sea,” Liu said.“That night,in my eyes, the starry sky was completely different from the past. For the first time in my life,I was awed (使……敬畏) by the mystery of the universe.”
But no matter how far away Liu's imagination takes him, somehow his novels always stay rational.
In The Three-Body Problem, for example,Liu tells a tale of aliens invading Earth. But unlike other alien stories,Liu talks more about relationships between civilizations(文明),rules of survival, and the meanings of life. And in The Wandering Earth,Liu looks ahead to the day when our solar system comes to an end and humans have to look for a new place to live. However, all his visions and solutions are based on “hard science”.Liu's works aren't simply daydreams.

Instead of using a credit card or smartphone to pay for your goods, Amazon wants you to use your hands. In a blog post,Dilip Kumar, vice president of Amazon Physical Retail, introduced the company's palm recognition(掌紋識(shí)別) technology, known as Amazon One.The technology, first rolling out in Amazon's home market of Seattle: will use people's palms to identify(確認(rèn)身份) them and combine that with details of the palm, such as lines and ridges, to build “palm signature”.
In addition to the trial in the company's stores in Seattle, starting today, Kumar added that Amazon One will come to other Amazon stores and will be used for more than just paying with your palm.“We believe Amazon One has broad applicability beyond our retail stores, so we also plan to offer the service to third parties like retailers(零售店), stadiums, and office buildings so that more people can benefit from this ease and convenience in more places,”Kumar added.
Though Amazon has introduced other ways to pay for goods at its physical stores, including the use of Cameras and an app linked to your Amazon account,Kumar explained palm recognition offers another level of privacy.
“We selected palm recognition for a few important reasons, ”Kumar wrote. One reason was that palm recognition is considered more private than other biometric (生物統(tǒng)計(jì)的) identifiers because you can't determine a person's identity by looking at a picture of their palm.It also requires users to make an intentional gesture by holding their palm over the device to use. This puts customers in control of when and where they use the service. What's more, it's contactless, which we think customers will appreciate, especially in current times.
To use Amazon One, people don't need an Amazon account, but simply phone number and a credit card. For those concerned about privacy, Kumar wrote, users can delete their biometric data if they decide they no longer want to use it.

Enjoying a musical performance no longer requires a costly ticket or a trip to a theater. These days, musicians are performing in private homes,at haircutting shops,at airports...even on ferry boats.
Musicians like house concerts. At music clubs, they often have to perform over loud conversation or deal with people who have had too much alcohol.People at house concerts are more focused on listening to the music.
Just a few hours before the Bombadils started singing at the O' Hair Salon,Lindsay was cutting hair and Tamera was doing facials. Then, they moved chairs and microphones to create a small performance space. The Bombadils made music in the front part of the hair salon, near the hairdryers and make-up tables.
“This is our first show at a hair salon,”Sarah Frank of the Bombadils told concertgoers at last week's performance.Frank said she and band members,Luke Fraser and Kaitlyn Raitz had a great time“interacting” with the audience.
Concerts in people's homes,or small businesses such as O' Hair's,are becoming more popular, musicians say.“There is a more relaxed atmosphere,”said Domenic Cicala,a musician who opened up his O' Hair Salon to concerts.“People really get to know the artists.”
At house concerts, people get time before and after concerts to meet the performers.Often, the hosts or guests will provide food and drink.
“People really like listening to music in the living room of a friend,”said Matt Hart, with Aubrey Zoli making up the Local Strangers,a folk-rock group based in Seattle. At many such concerts, the musicians do not need microphones.Yet,every word of their songs can be heard.

閱讀下面材料,根據(jù)其內(nèi)容和所給段落開頭語續(xù)寫兩段,使之構(gòu)成一篇完整的短文。
Bobby was getting cold sitting out in his backyard in the snow.Bobby didn't wear boots;or rather,he didn't own any.The thin sneakers he wore had a few holes in them and they did a poor job of keeping out the cold.
Bobby had been in his backyard for about an hour already.Try as he might,he could not come up with an idea for his mother's Christmas gift.He shook his head as he thought,“This is useless.Even if I do come up with an idea,I don't have any money for a gift.”
Wiping tears from his eyes,Bobby started walking down to the street where the shops were.It wasn't easy being six without a father, especially when he needed a man to talk to.
Bobby walked from shop to shop, looking into each decorated window.Everything seemed so beautiful but so out of reach. It was starting to get dark and Bobby unwillingly turned to walk home when suddenly his eyes caught the glimmer (微光) of the setting sun's rays reflecting on something on the roadside. He reached down and discovered a shiny dime (十分硬幣).
Never before has anyone felt as wealthy as Bobby did at that moment. As he held his newly-found treasure, warmth spread throughout his entire body and he walked into the first store. His excitement quickly turned cold when salesperson told him that he could not buy anything with only a dime.
He saw a flower shop and went inside to wait in line. When the shop owner asked if he could help him,Bobby presented the dime and asked if he could buy one flower for his mother's Christmas gift. The shop owner looked at Bobby and his ten-cent offering. Then he put his hand on Bobby's shoulder, saying,“You just wait here and I'll see what I can do for you.”
The sound of the door closing as the last customer left pulled Bobby back to reality. All alone in the shop,Bobby began to feel alone and afraid.
注意:1.續(xù)寫詞數(shù)應(yīng)為150左右;
2.請(qǐng)按如下格式作答。
Eventually the shop owner came out and moved to the counter.
With the bunch of beautiful roses in his hands,Bobby backed off and then turned and ran.
【參考范文】
Eventually the shop owner came out and moved to the counter. There, before Bobby's eyes, lay twelve red roses, with leaves of green and tiny white flowers all tied together with a big silver tape.Bobby's heart sank as the owner placed them gently into a long white box.“That will be ten cents, young man,” the shop owner said, reaching out his hand for the dime.Slowly,Bobby moved his hand to give the man his dime.Could this be true? He wondered.
With the bunch of beautiful roses in his hands,Bobby backed off and then turned and ran. Within minutes,he was at home, still breathless.“Look,Mom,what have I got for you?” Bobby called out in the backyard. His mother came out from inside the house. She could hardly believe her eyes upon seeing the beautiful flowers in front of her.“Merry Christmas!” Bobby said and began to tell her everything he had experienced in the flower shop.Tearfully,Mother hugged her son in her arms.Standing in the bitter cold air, they somehow didn't feel cold at all.
