Answer the questions(根據(jù)短文內(nèi)容回答下列問題)
Answer the questions.
Dear Grandma and Grandpa,
As you may have heard from my parents, I’m in China right now on a cultural exchange program. I’m enjoying my time here very much. I have made new friends here, many of whom are locals. Through my interaction(相互交流)with them, I’ve noticed some interesting cultural differences. One of the most obvious( 明 顯 的 )cultural differences is the size of food portions in restaurants. Back home in America, the food portions are usually larger than those I’ve seen in China. We’re even used to seeing super-sized dishes in some restaurants.
However, in Asia, food portions are generally not extremely large. I’m must encouraged to eat until I’m full and enjoy different kinds of food. Eating out in Asia is often a big social affair(社交活動). People here eat out a lot. There are all kinds of restaurants. And there are food stands and food carts-even on the sidewalk(人行道).
Another interesting aspect of eating out is the way food is served. Back home in America, each diner orders their own meal. When people eat out in Asia, they usually order food to share. Nearly every time I eat out with friends in China, each of us has our own bowl of rice or noodles, and we share the rest of the dishes. This is an excellent way to try new foods! One thing that makes me confused is the way people pay for food at a restaurant.
In the U.S. we often ask for separate(分開的)checks, so we each pay for our own meal. But here, if diners decide to pay separately, they typically don’t request separate checks. Instead, they give money to one person who pays the bill. People also don’t tip the server. Instead, there is often a service charge added to the bill.
I hope you are doing well. I’ll write you again!
Love, Margare

D. Answer (he questions (根據(jù)短文內(nèi)容回答問題)(12分)
A woman was at the airport waiting for her flight to start boarding. She still had a lot of time, so she went to a shop and bought a book to read. While she was in the shop, she decided to buy a bag of cookies as well.
She arrived at her gate, sat down and started reading her book. She read her book so attentively that she didn’t notice what was going on around her. But she did see that a man had sat down next to her and taken one of her cookies out of the bag.
She pretended not to notice, as she didn’t want to make a scene (當眾大吵). But then the man took more. He kept eating the cookies until there was just one left. The man took the last cookie and broke it in half. He tapped the woman on the shoulder and held out one half to her.
The woman could not believe how much nerve this man had to steal all of her cookies and then offer half a cookie in return. She angrily grabbed (奪取) the half-cookie out of his hand and ate it without any words.
Finally, it was time for her to board. As she went to the gate, she reached into her purse. Suddenly, she realized that her bag of cookies was still in her purse. The man had eaten his own cookies the whole time and simply wanted to share the last one with her. The woman’s face turned red with shame. Therefore, she quickly caught up with him and said, “______93_____.”
When we’re not paying attention to the world around us, it can be easy to misunderstand what’s happening or even become angry with others. It is better to keep our eyes open and think about every possibility when trying to understand a particular situation.

Follow a strict way of life
Self-disciplined (自律的) people are not all outstanding people. But nearly all outstanding people are self-disciplined people. Some of them read every day. Some of them never run late. The real difference between an elite (精英) person and an ordinary person is that an elite person can manage his or her time well. That’s where their success comes from. What people call self-discipline is in fact self-management.
One example is staying fit. Never underestimate (低估) someone who is in good shape. Anyone who has ever tried to lose weight knows that it’s not easy. It's even harder to avoid putting weight back on. If someone is in good shape, it shows that he knows the principles (原則) of staying fit and is able to stick to a plan that uses these principles.
If someone is in good shape, it means that this person is good at managing themselves and their time. Whether it is natural or acquired, it is a great skill. It also shows that this person is able to keep persevering (堅定不移的) and can balance long-term goals with short-term goals.
So if someone is in good shape, he or she is much more than just healthy.
How do you learn self-management? First of all, set a goal and write down your reasons for wanting to achieve it. Create a list of all the things you need to do to achieve this goal and start to work on them one at a time. With self-discipline, small things in life will no longer trouble you. Through self-discipline, you can _______________________________.

Answer the questions (根據(jù)以下內(nèi)容回答問題)
Some people are standing at a group of low hills in West Texas. Suddenly, they observe glowing reddish - orange lights. Are they the headlights of cars on the highway? Are they the lights of campfires? The people shout and point because the lights are moving! But they aren’t moving the way cars move. They shoot up in the air. They fall back to the earth. And then ... they simply disappear!
Every night, people go to observe the famous Marfa lights. The lights are named for the town of Marfa, Texas, where these lights can be seen in the distant hills east of the town. Over the years there have been many beliefs about these strange lights. One theory is that the lights are the headlights of cars driving down the road.
But that could not be true. Settlers in the 1880s wrote about the lights long before there were cars with headlights. At that time, pioneers thought the Marfa lights were the campfires of Apaches2 in the hills. When the pioneers would ride into the hills, they could find no evidence3 of campsites of fires. Later, the settlers learned that the Apaches, too, could see the lights. They thought the lights were stars that had come down the earth.
Some people say that the lights are moonlight shining on metal in the hills. Others say they are made by gases from swamps4. Some scientists have tried to prove that lights from planets or starts reflect5 in a strange way on the hills. That doesn’t help us understand why the lights “dance”. They move up and down, slow down and speed up. These dancing “stars”, the Marfa lights, stay a mystery.

1theory:thoughts or beliefs about a set of facts
2 Apache: a member of a Native American people
3evidence:something that shows proof
4 swamp: land that is always very wet or covered with a layer of water

67. What does the underlined word THAT in Paragraph 4 refer to?
68. Why does the writer say “the Marfa lights, stay a mystery?” Give your opinions.
【答案】63. Reddish-orange
64. The lights are named after the town of Marfa, Texas.

Answer the questions (根據(jù)以下內(nèi)容回答問題)
Do you think you’re a lucky person? Let’s see what Professor Richard Wise-man, a famous psychologist(心理學家), has discovered about luck:
Ten years ago, I set out a research on luck. I wanted to know why some people are always in the right place at the right time, while others always experience ill luck.
Many people volunteered for my research. Over the years I interviewed them, watched their lives and had them take part in my experiment.
I carried out a simple experiment to discover why there were differences in their ability to find opportunities. I gave both lucky and unlucky people a newspaper and asked them to look through it an tell me how many photographs were in side.
I had secretly placed a large message halfway through the newspaper saying. “Tell the researcher you have seen this and win $50.”
This message took up half of the page and was more than two inches high. It was staring everyone straight in the face, but unlucky people tended to (傾向于)miss it and lucky people tended to spot it.
Unlucky people are just more nervous than lucky people. They are busy looking only for what they need and this stops them from noticing the unexpected. As a result, they miss out on opportunities.
Lucky people tend to be more relaxed and open. They can see everything that is in front of them, rather than just what they are looking for.
My research shows that lucky people live by several principles(原則). Here are some of these principles:
1.Opportunities are always given to those who are prepared.
2. Be open to new experiences and break your normal thought patterns(模式).
3.Spend a few moments each day remembering things that went well.
4.See yourself being lucky before an important meeting or phone call.
63. How long has Professor Richard Wise-man studied on luck?
64. What did the volunteers do for the professor during the research?
65. What’s the purpose of Professor Richard Wise-man’s small experiment?
66. The message in the newspaper was so small that unlucky people couldn’t find it, wasn’t it?
67. Why did the unlucky fail to find the message in the newspaper according to the research?
68. Which principle of the four is the most important in your opinion? Why?
【答案】63. For ten years.
64. They were interviewed, watched their lives and they took part in his experiments.
65. To discover why there were differences in volunteers’ ability to find opportunites.

D. Answer the questions (根據(jù)以下內(nèi)容回答問題)
The sixth sense
The “sixth sense” is often said to be a strong feeling that a person has about something or someone. Read about one mother’s experience.
I had a feeling ...
Kathy Sansano arrived home from work two months ago at 7:00 in the evening. “Usually, my husband is home before me, but when I got in, his briefcase was there, but he wasn’t,” recalls Sansano. She just thought that he want to the store for something. Sansano began preparing dinner, but couldn’t shake the feeling that something was wrong. “I just started feeling very anxious and had to sit down. Five minutes later my husband phoned to say that our son had been injured in a football game at school.”
Luckily, the boy only had a broken wrist, but Sansano still can’t explain how she knew something was wrong. “It might have been ‘mother’s intuition (直覺)’” she laughs. “My son and I have always been very close.”
Science points out five basic senses that humans use to experience the world. There is now evidence that human may also own a sixth sense ― or an intuition about people or events. Recent studies suggest that insects and animals release odorless (meaning “without any smells”) chemicals into the environment to send signal emotions such as fear or aggression (侵略). When another creature of the same kind senses the chemical, certain behavior is caused in that creature; for example, it will prepare to fight or to protect itself.
Scientists believe that humans long ago may have communicated using these kinds of chemical signals. “I walked into the room, and something just didn’t seem right.” It may be that the person is sensing chemical messages that have been produced by others. Kathy Sansano’s husband may have left the house feeling afraid and worried about their son. When Kathy got home, she sensed his worry.

Answer the questions(根據(jù)短文內(nèi)容回答下列問題)
There was once a boy who was afraid of the dark. He thought that his bedroom was filled up with monsters when it was dark. But there came a time when he was too old to be allowed to keep sleeping with the light on .
That first night he was filled with fear, his mind full of monsters. Therefore, he went over to his wardrobe to get a torch. But when he opened the wardrobe door, he saw a monster, face to face, and he let out the loudest scream in the world.
The monster took a step backwards, grabbed his colourful hair, stared at the boy with his single red eye, and …started crying! The monster cried for so long that the boy’s shock and fear disappeared. He calmed the monster as much as he could, and started talking to him, asking him why he was crying, and what he was doing there.
The monster told him he lived in the wardrobe, but almost never went out, because he was afraid of the boy. When the boy asked him why, the monster told him the boy’s face seemed to him the most horrible thing he’d ever seen with eyes, ears and a nose. The boy felt the similar way about the monster with a huge head full of mouths and hair.
The two of them talked so much that they became quite friendly , and they came to know that both of them had been afraid of the thing :the unknown . To lose their fear, all they had to do was to get to know each other. Together they travelled around the world, seeing lions, tigers, crocodiles and dragons. It was the first time either of them had seen such creatures, but they made the effort to get to know them. In the end, they ___________and __________.
And, although his parents weren’t too happy, because they thought he was too old to still believe in monsters, the truth of it was that all kinds of creatures visited the boy’s bedroom each night. And , instead of fearing them, he had learned to get to know them and be friends with them.

Answer the questions.
In 1935, when Emma was five years old, her mother died. Although her brothers and sisters were loving and caring, they were no replacement for a mother’s love. Emma, who grew up to be my mother, told me that her family was too poor to afford to buy her a little doll at that time.
After her mother’s death, Emma was determined to look after others. She felt that she could make up for her sad childhood through her dedication(奉獻)to her own family. But I knew there was still something missing.
A few days before Christmas in 1989, one customer came to our company with her beautiful handmade dolls. I decided to get one for my five-year-old daughter, Lucy. Then I had an idea, I asked the customer to make me a doll for my mother, Emma—a special one with grey hair and glasses—a grandmother doll.
A friend of mine agreed to play Santa(圣誕老人)to deliver the presents to our home on Christmas morning! I began to get ready for what would turn out to be one special day of my mother’s life.
Santa arrived on Christmas Day at the planned time. Lucy was so happy to get the present from Santa. When Santa turned to leave, he looked once more into his huge bag and brought out one more present. Then he asked where Emma was. To my mother’s big surprise, she heard her name! He handed her the present and also a message card:
For Emma,
Before my trip this year, I was cleaning my room and found this package. It was supposed to be delivered on December 25, 1935. Many apologies for delivering the present late.
Love,
Santa

Twenty-five years have passed since the American TV series, Friends, was shown for the first time. However, it is still making friends. Many Chinese teenagers love it. Through watching the show, they can not only learn about American culture but also improve their conversational (口語的)English.
Perhaps you haven’t seen the series. It’s a story of six young people. They came to New York City to find love, success, adventure and fun. Each of the characters had a different personality. However, they were able to overlook (忽略)their differences and became good friends. There was no social media at that time, but they always “l(fā)iked” and supported one another. “I’ll be there for you.” says the opening song, “because you’re there for me. too.”

Answer the questions (根據(jù)短文內(nèi)容回答下列問題)
My name is Opal. Last summer my daddy sent me to the store for a box of cheese, some white rice, and two tomatoes and I came back with a dog. This is what happened: I walked into the vegetable section of the grocery store to pick out my two tomatoes and I almost bumped (撞) right into the store manager. He was standing there all red-faced, screaming and waving his arms around. “Who let a dog in here?” he kept on shouting. “Who let a dog in here?”
At first, I didn’t see a dog. There were just a lot of vegetables on the floor, tomatoes and onions and green peppers. It seemed that all the employees were running around, waving their arms just the same way the store manager was waving his.
And then the dog came running around the corner. He was a big dog. And ugly. And he looked like he was having a real good time. His tongue was hanging out and he was wagging (搖擺) his tail. He suddenly stopped and smiled right at me. I had never before in my life seen a dog smile, but that is what he did. He pulled back his lips and showed me all his teeth. Then he wagged his tail so hard that he knocked some oranges off a shelf, and they went rolling everywhere, mixing in with the tomatoes and onions and green peppers.
The manager screamed, “Somebody get that dog!”
The dog went running over to the manager, wagging his tail and smiling. He stood up on his hind legs (后腿). You could tell that all he wanted to do was get face to face with the manager and thank him for the good time he was having in the store, but somehow he ended up knocking the manager over. And the manager must have been having a bad day, because lying there on the floor, right in front of everybody, he started to cry. The dog came to him, really concerned, and licked (舔) his face.
“Please,” said the manager. “Somebody call the pound (流浪狗收留所).”
“Wait a minute!” I shouted. “__________________________________.”

The king consulted learned men, promising he would richly reward anyone who could answer the questions, but their answers didn’t satisfy him. Answer the questions(根據(jù)短文內(nèi)容回答下列問題):
Electives(選修課) are always popular with students because they offer the chance to learn something exciting, and they’re a welcome break from regular courses like maths and physics. Here are just a few of the exciting electives lucky teenagers can take in some of China’s middle schools.
Self-defense skills
A school from Chongqing
The school offers a self-defense course — just for girls. Those who attend the lessons have the chance to study basic self-protection skills in a one-on-one practice. They learn how to get away when they need to and defend themselves against attacks. “I feel safer in myself now,” said Zhang Yi, 15, a girl student.
Pottery
A school from Tianjin
The famous pottery scene in a movie called Ghost is a lasting memory for many movie-goers. Young artists at the school love to get their hands dirty creating beautiful pieces. Students learn how to design and make various clay projects. At the end, they have the skills to make their own clay bowls, cups, vases and pots.
Horse riding
A school from Beijing
Equestrians(馬術(shù)) can look pretty cool, can’t they? Teenagers at this school can now choose a course in riding skills. They’re taught to communicate with their horses and how to use reins. To ride a horse in the proper way, a student must hold the head forward and keep his back straight. Students come away from this elective not only knowing how to ride a horse gracefully, but also physically fitter!
Couplets
A school from Nanjing
How many of you can write a couplet? This old literary(文學的) form is slowly disappearing, but Chinese culture lovers at the school are trying to make it alive. D.Answer the questions (根據(jù)以下內(nèi)容回答問題)
“Oh boys, don’t throw stones at the poor bird,” said an old grey-headed man, “Sir,” said a little fellow, “she makes such a loud noise that we can’t suffer from her.” “Yes, but she uses the voice which nature gave her, and I am afraid the stone will rebound(彈回), and hurt you as long as you live!” “Rebound! We don’t understand you, sir!” “Well, come and I will tell you a story.”
“Fifty years ago, I was a boy like you. I used to throw stones until I became very accurate. One day I went to work for an old couple. They were very kind to everybody and everything. Few had so many birds making their nests under the roofs of their houses. The birds seemed to love the couple. For seven years a bird had come, after the long winter was over, and built her nest in the same place, and raised her young chicks there. She and her mate had just returned when I went there to work, and the couple welcomed them heartily. The bird hopped hopped about as if glad to be back. During the day, I thought I would try my skill upon her. She sat on a pole and looked at me trustfully. I found a nice stone, and I threw it with my utmost skill. It struck the bird on the head and she droped dead!”
“I was sorry when I saw her fall. But the deed was done. I said nothing to the old couple about it. But one of their grandchildren told them what I had done. Though the couple never said a word to me, I knew that they were deeply saddened by my cruelty. I could never look at them in the face afterwards. Oh, that I should have told them how sorry I was!”
“They have been dead many years, and so has the poor bird; but don’t you see how that stone rebounded, and hit me? How much the memory of it has hurt me! My dear boys, I would pay a great deal today if I could release from my present feeling! For fifty years I have remembered it. I have never spoken of it before; but if what my words will prevent you from throwing a stone that may rebound, I will be happy.”
