Her name was Mrs. Thompson. And as she stood in front of the 5th grade class on the very first day she looked at her students and said that she loved them all the same. But that was impossible because there in the front row was a little boy named Teddy Stoddard. Mrs.Thompson had watched Teddy the year before and noticed that he didn't play well with the other children, that his clothes were messy and that he constantly needed a bath. She paid no?attention?to Teddy.
However, when she read his file, she was in surprise. Teddy's first grade teacher wrote, "Teddy is a bright child with a ready laugh. He does his work neatly and has?good manners...he is a joy to be around."His second grade teacher wrote, "Teddy is an?excellent?student, well liked by his classmates. But he is troubled because his mother has a deadly illness and life at home must be a struggle." His third grade teacher wrote, "His mother's death has been hard on him. He tried to do his best but his father doesn't show much interest." Teddy's fourth grade teacher wrote, "Teddy is withdrawn and doesn't?show much interest in?school. He doesn't have many friends and sometimes sleeps in class.” By now, Mrs.Thompson realized the problem and she?was ashamed of?herself. She thought that she could?make a difference.
She felt even worse when her students brought her Christmas?presents, wrapped in beautiful paper and tied with pretty ribbons, except for Teddy's.His present was clumsily wrapped in the heavy, brown paper that he got from a grocery bag. Mrs. Thompson opened it in the middle of the other presents. Some of the children stared to laugh when she found a stone?bracelet(手鐲)with some of the stones missing, and a bottle that was one-quarter full of?perfume.

Ring a Bell
Ms. Tracy looked up from her yellow notebook and cleared her throat. The noise in the class died down as we turned toward her. "We're going to help a charity to collect money by ringing a bell. Each of you will ring it for four hours," she announced. As the words left her lips, complaints could be heard around the room. Unwillingly, I dug for my planner and look notes. Four hours of ringing a stupid bell. Four hours that I could be studying for the SAT. Was this supposed to be a joke? I joined the students around the table and signed up for 1he first day of break-to get it over with.
A few weeks later, I was standing next to the big blue-and-white Walmart. There was another guy holding a jar across from me. Great, I was going to be stuck here ringing a bell with a guy who was trying to get donations for another charity. To top it off, it was only about 4.4℃.
Slowly, I put on the red dress bearing the symbol of ow charity. I hoped that I already spent two minutes doing that, Ring! Ring! A group of older women came up with their walking sticks to drop in some change. А man with а broad-cimmеd bat came by and put some coins in. I checked my phone. Just 10 minutes had passed.
A strong bitterly-cold wind blew against my freezing face. I was starting to regret ignoring my mom's advice to wear a scarf. I looked up, wishing that time would pass more quickly. A few birds swept around the poles. The sky was gently blue. Palm trees waved in the cold wind. How comfortable it might be to curl(蜷縮)up with a hot cup of tea and a book on the cozy sofa. Then another ring brought me back to reality.

From the parking lot stepped out a poorly-dressed man, walking with difficulty toward me. I saw his unbalanced shoulders and awkward figure. His hair was a mess and his shirt was dirty. I stopped ringing the bell, wondering what he was going to do. He pulled some change out of his worn pocket and reached towards the bucket. I couldn't help but say, "Thank you, sir." He turned to smile. The money he donated was not a lot, but it was clearly a lot to him. This act of charity, though not much, was worth so much more than donations given by those who were better off.
彼D(zhuǎn)身微笑起來。他捐的錢并不多,但顯然對他來說是很多的。這項慈善行為雖然不多,但比那些富裕的捐款價值得多。
Inspired by his generosity, I continued to ring my bell happily. The bell rang so merrily that it attracted more people. I broadly smiled at everyone who approached me, feeling me shameful inside about my unwillingness and resistance when given the task. It was still chilly but I was bathed in the sunshine of kindness. Many say that these days people are becoming more and more selfish. I say that whoever believes that needs to go and ring a bell for a charity as I did

Where were you when you first heard My Heart Will Go On? You know that love song that took over the world in the late 1990s, the one that ruled radios and television screens, that trilled through the air when you rang your neighbour’s doorbell, or rang out of a Valentine’s Day musical card—the song we love to hate now because it is almost shameful to admit how much we listened to it in 1998. I’m no fan of the song, but I’ll tell you one thing—it saved my life.
I remember where I was when I heard the song, 13 years old, only a few weeks away from receiving my class eight report card. When my mother and I went to collect it from school, the skies were grey. On the left side of the report card was the failure of my choosing—Maths, Physics and Chemistry—on the bottom of the right hand side it said Not Promoted(不升級) in red ink. My mother, an English teacher in another Calcutta school, was too proud to beg the principal for the three marks I needed in Chemistry to be promoted to class nine. I walked along, thinking of the last song I was watching on MTV before we left for school. It was Dion’s all & shy; knowing hit My Heart Will Go On: “You have come to show you, go on...”
I was a fool to have ever thought that I could get away with not studying and watching MTV for hours on end. Till class eight, my father had refused to get a cable connection on the grounds that my brother and I would forever be glued to the screen, not study and fail the exams. The year after he gave in to his desire to watch late night football, I proved him right. I failed class eight because I was in love with the Backstreet Boys and would watch MTV all the time so that I wouldn’t miss a single video. That’s the whole truth and the band will never know the price I paid for my love.

Paragraph 2:
Some months later, when the talent competition was announced in school, I was picked for the final round.

Failing the year changed the world as I knew it. Overnight, it seemed as though everything had changed. I lost my friends in school because every conversation was filled with pity, theirs, and shame, mine. I was stopped from watching TV. At school, some teachers ignored my raising hands because I’d already studied the text before but failed. I used to love singing, now my life was filled with sadness.
Some months later, when the talent competition was announced in school, I was picked for the final round. On the day of the contest, I stood before the entire school, closed my eyes and sang the song. In that moment, I realized what “You have come to show you” meant to me—I had come to show me to my classmates and my teachers, to show them that I wasn’t just a girl who got held back, that failed, that I was good for something, that I was enough the way I was. Sometimes, when you sing like you mean the words, chances are you might win.
Sometimes your biggest weakness can become your biggest strength. Everyone has his own weakness, but God always offers his unexpected strength in his misfortune. We’d make full use of it just like the girl below,we are certainly fortunate to be given other blessings from Heaven.
The story of one girl who decided to study judo(柔道) despite the fact that she had lost her left arm in a car accident.
The girl began lessons with an old Japanese judo instructor. The girl was doing well. So she couldn’t understand why, after three months of training, the instructor had taught her only one move.
“Instructor,” the girl finally said,“Shouldn’t I be learning more moves? It isn’t far enough to learn just this.”
“This is the only move you know, but this is the only move you’ll ever need to know,” the instructor replied.
Not quite understanding, but believing in her teacher, the girl kept training. She didn’t dare to complain about anything and it was apparent that since her teacher said so,she had to follow without any unhappiness.
Several months later, the instructor took the girl to her first tournament. Surprising herself, the girl easily won her first two matches. The third match proved to be more difficult, but after some time, her opponent became impatient and charged. The girl skillfully used her one move to win the match. Still amazed by her success, the girl was now in the finals.
This time, her opponent was bigger, stronger and more experienced. For a while, the girl appeared to be over-matched. Concerned that the girl might get hurt, the referee called a time out. She was about to stop the match when the instructor interrupted.
“No,” the instructor insisted,“Let her continue.”
Soon after the match started again, her opponent made a critical mistake: she dropped her guard. Instantly, the girl used her move to hold her opponent tightly. The girl had won the match and the tournament. She was the champion.
Paragraph 1:
On the way home, the girl and her teacher reviewed every move in each and every match.
___________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 2:
“Two reasons account for that you won,”the teacher answered.

On the way home, the girl and her teacher reviewed every move in each and every match. Then the girl took courage to ask what was really on her mind. “Instructor, how did I win the tournament with only one move?Is there any magic power about it? Is my opponent much weaker than me?Please tell me the secret.” The judo instructor and his pupil talked excitedly as walking forward. She couldn’t wait to know the answer, but the instructor appeared unhurriedly. Finally he opened his mouth.
“Two reasons account for that you won,” the teacher answered.“First, you’ve almost mastered one of the most difficult throws in all of judo. Second, the only known defense for that move is for your opponent to grab your left arm. It is your biggest weakness that makes you win the match. As a proverb says,‘Every coin has two sides.’ Making full use of your strength is your achievement. Please remember that in no case will you give up especially in trouble. God is fair to everyone.”
“你贏有兩個原因,”老師回答,“首先,你幾乎掌握了柔道最困難的投擲之一。其次,唯一已知的防守是讓你的對手抓住你的左臂。這是你最大的弱點,讓你贏得了比賽。正如諺語所說,“每枚硬幣都有兩面性?!背浞掷媚愕牧α渴悄愕某删汀U堄涀?,無論如何你都不會放棄,尤其是在麻煩中。上帝對每個人都是公平的?!?br />

A friend of mine, named Jack, received an expensive car from his brother as a Christmas present. On Christmas Eve when Jack came out of his office, a street urchin(頑童)was walking around the shining car. “Is this your car, sir?” he asked. Jack answered, “Yes, my brother gave it to me for Christmas.” The boy was surprised. “You mean your brother gave it to you and it did cost you nothing? Sir, I wish…”He hesitated(猶豫),Jack thought of course he knew what the boy wanted, but what the boy said surprised him greatly. “I wish,” the boy went on, “that I could be a brother like that.” Jack looked at the boy in surprise, and then he said again, “Would you like to take a ride in my car?” “Oh yes, I’d love to ,”the boy answered.
After a short ride, the boy turned and with his eyes shining, said, “Sir, would you mind driving in front of my house?”
Jack smiled a little. He thought he knew what the boy wanted. He wanted to show his neighbors that he could ride home in a big car. But Jack was wrong again. “Will you stop where those two steps are?” the boy asked.

Funny how you can always tell when somebody's laughing behind your back. Jodie hadn't really heard anything, maybe a whisper, but when she turned around, the girls in the back row of the class were looking at her, trying to hide smiles and laughs. She looked back at her teacher.Mr_Swales was talking about what people do all day. He also wanted to find out what his students wanted to be when they grew up.He called on Billy Mitzer first.
“My daddy works in a bank, ” Billy Mitzer said.“I guess I want to work in a bank too. There's lots of money in the bank.”
“My parents have a grocery store, ” Emmy DiSalvo said.“Papa's behind the counter and Mama keeps the cash register. But I want to be an airline pilot.”
Jodie liked it when Mr Swales asked them questions like this.He was about to call on Jodie when the girls in the back row burst out laughing.
Shirley Danes yelled,“Jodie's daddy is a_garbage_man!”
Everybody in the class laughed out loud.Everybody except Jodie, that is.She felt her face turn bright red.She looked around the whole classroom.Everyone was laughing. Some kids were even holding their noses.
Jodie looked at Mr Swales. He was angry. He almost never raised his voice, but now he did.
“Silence! I want everybody to quiet down this instant.”
The laughter stopped immediately. The sound of cars and people going by out on the street came through the windows.“You should be ashamed of yourselves,” Mr Swales said.“Being a garbage man...I mean,is a difficult and enormously useful job.We should all be grateful to Mr Harris.Where would we be without him? Up to our ears in garbage, that's where. How would you like that?”
“It's not funny,” Mr Swales went on.“Garbage is a serious matter.I think you all owe Jodie an_apology.And after that, you're all going to write Jodie's father,Mr_Harris,a nice letter to tell him how much you appreciate what he does for all of us,in other words, keeping our city clean.”

I was in sunny California. The past two months I had been sick, sleepless, forgetful,a little mad and a little sad.I had been busy reading and learning all I could about stopping smoking.I changed routines that led me to smoke again.I was trying my hardest to practice positive thinking until it would come naturally.Basically,I was making quitting smoking my job!
I thought it took the first two months for what was in my head to get to my heart.I walked and walked and breathed in the beautiful air.I began to notice I could smell and taste again. My hair and skin looked better...everything was improving. The best change I noticed was that I was beginning to feel “free” and I was loving it.
My friend May came to Nashville to visit her daughters. When she arrived, she was sick with what we thought was a chest cold.In a matter of days, she had seen the doctors, had a diagnosis and was getting ready for the fight of her life...she had lung cancer.
I sat with May and her daughters after their first-day treatment at the Sarah Cannon Cancer Center. They told me the worst part of the whole day was neither having to hurry up and wait to see doctor after doctor nor putting up with the chemo and radiation(放化療),but having to answer the question,“Did you smoke and for how long” over and over again at each stop.
Christmas fell and it was my first smoke-free holiday in 37 years.I was engaged in shopping, planning, cooking, wrapping. However, the stress, the tiredness of overdoing, and the physical and mental exhaustion(疲勞) of dealing with my quit exploded(爆發(fā)) on Christmas Day! I was going to my mother's house, which was about an hour's ride away.I wanted to drive myself in my own car.Once in the car and driving down I-24,I had this thought:I could smoke and nobody would know.I pulled off the exit and went through my purse looking for money.

I have a daily routine.Every night,I end my hour-long subway one stop early, just so I can eat at my favorite diner. But one night last month,as I stepped off the No.6 train and onto a nearly empty platform,my evening took an unexpected turn.
I was walking toward the stairs when a teenage boy approached and pulled out a knife. He wanted my money,so I just gave him my wallet and told him,“Here you go.” As the teen began to walk away,I told him,“Hey,wait a minute. You forgot something. If you're going to be robbing people for the rest of the night, you might as well take my coat to keep you warm.” He asked me,“Why are you doing this?” I replied,“If you're willing to risk your freedom for a few dollars, then I guess you must really need the money.I mean, all I wanted to do was get dinner and if you really want to join me...hey,you're more than welcome.” I just felt maybe he really needed help.
The teen and I went into the diner and sat in a booth. The manager, the dishwashers, and the waiters all came by to say hi.
The kid was like,“You know everybody here.Do you own this place?”
“No,I just eat here a lot,” I told the teen.He said,“But you're even nice to the dishwashers.”
I replied,“Well, haven't you been taught you should be nice to everybody?”
“Yeah, but I didn't think people actually behaved that way,” the teen said.

A few seconds remained and the score was tied. Players gathered near the goal. Suddenly Devin saw a clear opening to the goal. He struck the ball hard and held his breath as it flew toward the upper corner of the net.
Goal!
Three seconds later, the judge blew the whistle. Game over.
"Championship game, here we come!" said Tara, slapping hands with Devin. "Can't wait till Thursday."
Devin grinned. Thursday would be huge—the big soccer game in the afternoon, and the school's autumn concert in the evening. Ms. Poltis had chosen Devin to sing a song alone.
"Great work," Coach said as the team gathered. "Be here by 6:30 on Thursday to warm up." "It's a night game," Coach explained. "Under the lights."
Devin's heart sank. The concert was at 7:00. Same time as the game. He couldn't possibly do both. His teammates were super excited. They were on the edge of a title. He couldn't disappoint his team by skipping the game.
That night, Devin lay in bed, staring at the ceiling. The lyrics struck him and he began to sing:
"No matter how hard the struggle, I will never let you down..."
He liked the song, and he appreciated how kind Ms. Poltis always was. Devin knew the words by heart, but the thought of singing alone made him tremble. Sometimes he was nervous about participating in sports, too, but that always went away as soon as a game started. He'd never sung a solo before. It was a relief to know he didn't have to now. The soccer game was a perfect excuse. But so was Ms. Poltis. It was long time before he fell asleep.

The next morning, Devin went straight to the music room. "I am not the best singer and I have to..." Devin hesitated with his eyes fixed on the floor. Ms. Poltis smiled warmly, "I choose you because you work hard, like the person in the song. So don't be nervous!" Devin raised his head and looked at her, tears welling up in his eyes. It was at that moment that Devin made his final decision. Later that day, Devin went to his coach and teammates. Unexpectedly, they welcomed him and promised that they would spare no effort to win the title.

I grew up in a small town where elementary school was a ten-minute walk from my house and in an age, not so long ago, when we children could go home for lunch and find our mothers waiting. At the time, I didn’t consider this to be so important, although today it certainly would be. Actually, our lunch time together in the past years had had a great influence on my life before I realized it.
Our lunch time when I was in the third grade will stay with me always. I had been picked to be the princess in the school play, and for weeks my mother had painstakingly practised my lines with me. But no matter how easily I delivered them at home, as soon as I stepped onstage, every word disappeared from my head. Finally, my teacher took me aside. She explained patiently that she needed a narrator and had written a narrator’s part to the play, and asked me to switch roles. Her words, kindly delivered, still hurt me, especially when I saw my part go to another girl.
I didn’t tell my mother what had happened when I went home for lunch that day. But she sensed my unease, and instead of suggesting we practice my lines, she asked if I wanted to walk in the yard. It was a lovely spring day and the rose vine(藤) was turning green. Under the huge trees, we could see yellow dandelions(蒲公英) appearing unexpectedly through the grass in bunches, as if a painter had touched our landscape with small amounts of gold. I watched my mother casually bend down by one of the bushes. “I think I'm going to dig up all these weeds,” she said, pulling a blossom up by all its roots. “From now on, we’ll have roses in this garden.” I immediately protested, “But I like dandelions. All flowers are beautiful — even dandelions.”

Paragraph 1:
“Do you mean that every flower has its own beauty?” asked my mother thoughtfully. I nodded without hesitation, as if a second wasted could deprive the dandelions of their life. “The same to you,” she added, her voice soft. “Not everyone can be a rose, and it is also an honour to be a dandelion.” Knowing that my mother had realized my pain, I took off the mask that I had worn for the whole lunch time and poured out my unease heartily. She listened to me patiently and patted me on the back tenderly. Suddenly she stopped, as if to say something.

Paragraph 2:
“But you will be a beautiful narrator,” Mom said. She reminded me of how fluently I could deliver my part at home. It was at that time that I understood that maybe I was more suitable for a role back stage like a narrator. From then on, I practiced my lines heart and soul with my mother at lunch time for weeks. And the performance approached ultimately. Standing backstage, nervousness came flooding in me. What encouraged me to overcome it was the inspiration from the beautiful yellow dandelions. The performance that night was eventually a big success. Hearing the thunderous applause, I took pride in my role and firmly believed that even a dandelion had its own beauty.

Natalie was eleven years old. She lived with her family in a village in Kerala. Her family did not live right in the village, but on the outskirts of the village. This was because her father was a mahout.
One of the first commands an elephant learns is to kneel down and allow the mahout to sit atop it. From that moment on, the elephant obeys every command its master will give it. The mahout commands the animal with gentle prods and with words of encouragement. Natalie never stopped being amazed at how such a huge animal would obey a man who was physically so much smaller than it.
Natalie loved going with her father into the jungle. Here, huge trees were cut down and transported to sawmills. But it was not easy for vehicles to move about in the thick forests. This was where the elephants came in handy. They were so strong that they could move many tree trunks at a time.
Natalie wished she didn't have to go to school every day. She was happiest when there was a holiday. Then she would help to bathe and feed the elephant. She would sit atop with her father, and, in her childish but firm voice, she would give commands to the elephant like her father. But no elephant obeyed her.Her father often encouraged her,"What you need is patience!”
One day, after Natalie had finished her homework and put books into her backpack, she noticed that her father had not yet returned from the forest with the elephant. He was usually coming back before sunset. Natalie was so worried that she went in search of her father.

There was a young man born in a poor family. As a result, his school career was continually interrupted. Once he was asked to write a paper about what he wanted to be and do when he grew up. That night he wrote a seven-page paper describing his goal of someday owning a horse ranch. He wrote about his dream in great detail and he even drew a diagram of a 200-acre ranch. Then he drew a detailed floor plan for a 4,000-square-foot house that would sit on a 200-acre dream ranch. He put a great deal of his heart into the project and the next day he handed it in to his teacher.
Two days later, he received his paper back. On the front page was a large red F with a note that read," See me after class.” The boy with the dream went to see the teacher after class and asked, “Why did I receive an F?" The teacher said, "This is an unrealistic dream for a young boy like you. You have no money. You have no resources from your family. There 's no way you could ever do it.” Then the teacher added, "If you will rewrite this paper with a more realistic goal. I will reconsider your grade.”

On Monday night, Cindy' s nine-year-old daughter Daisy announced she was going to practice one last time for the upcoming third grade talent show. The following day, she' d be performing "Fight Song" by Rachel Platten, which they both knew would be a crowd pleaser among her young classmates. She had prepared herself for the show for nearly two months, during which she herself made the final decision to sing to the guitar. She had learned to play the guitar for two years.
As she began to play, Cindy closed her eyes, imagining for a moment what the children' s faces would look like as she began to play and sing. Most of her classmates had never heard this girl sing, let alone play the guitar. As she shared her musical gift in that spotlight moment, Cindy knew it would be hard for her to contain her smile. Cindy guessed that she would be a little nervous before so many students and teachers. But she wouldn't be invited to witness what would happen. She was a little disappointed.
"Parents aren't allowed to come to the third grade talent show, Mom," she said matter-of-factly two weeks ago, breaking her heart right in half.
“What? You must be mistaken," Cindy said, feeling inappropriately emotional about this news. They were only students of the third grade. They should be accompanied by their parents on such important occasions. They may be nervous. Her mind was full of kind thoughts and love, but she said nothing. Perhaps that day she had something unhappy so she was unwilling to talk much with her. Perhaps her school would give out invitations to all the parents welcoming them to appreciate their children's performances. She decided to offer her puzzle, so she asked with caution, "Would parents be invited to the show?"
"No. No parents. It's just for kids. " she said, doing nothing to soften the blow…that is, until she saw the look on her face. Tapping her hand gently, she said with confidence, "Don't worry, Mom. I'll be fine.”

Cindy knew she would be fine. She had learned to play the guitar for a long time and she was a talented singer in her family. Her musical gift stood out when she was only one year old. And she'd watched her confidence grow over the past years. She knew she would take the stage with her wonderful performance. Selfishly, she wanted to be there to see it. Standing in a hall or classroom with shining eyes as her child read a story she wrote, recited a line in a play, or sang alone or with a group, was her desire.
Cindy desired to watch her growth especially on such occasions. In her view, when Daisy scanned the crowd until she found her, she looked at her with all the love in her heart. In that moment, she would perform better. But Cindy had to admit that her child was building up her independence using her own way. So perhaps she should be for her decision. She was in a mixed emotional state where her feelings were fighting against one another and she decided to respect her decision. Cindy gently tapped her shoulder, saying, “Sure, I know you are the best."

My school had a tradition during the ninth-grade graduation: a beautiful gold and green jacket(the school colors), was awarded to the student who had maintained the highest grades for nine years.
I had been a straight A student since the first grade and had looked forward very much to owning that jacket. My father was a farm laborer who couldn’t earn enough money to feed five children, so I was given to my grandparents to raise. There would never be a school sports jacket for us because we couldn’t afford it. This scholarship jacket was my only chance.
One day in May, I happened to overhear in the office. Mr. Schmidt, my history teacher, and Mr. Boone, my math teacher arguing about me. “I refuse to do it!I don’t care who her father is; her grades can’t match Martha’s at all. I won’t lie or falsify(偽造)records.” said Mr. Schmidt angrily.
But Mr. Boone’s voice sounded calm. “Joann’s father is not only on the Board(董事會), he owns the only store in town: we could say it was a close tie and…”
The pounding in my ears drowned out the rest of the words, only a word here and there filtered through. “…Martha is Mexican…resign … won’t do it …”
To this day I don’t remember how I made it through the rest of the afternoon. That night, I cried into my pillow so Grandmother wouldn’t hear me.
The next day when the principal called me into his office. “Martha,” he said, “There’s been a change in policy this year regarding the scholarship jacket. This year the Board has decided to charge fifteen dollars, which still won’t cover the complete cost of the jacket. So if you are unable to pay the money for the jacket, it will be given to the next one in line.”
Standing with all the dignity I could find, I said, I’ll speak to my grandfather about it, sir, and let you know tomorrow.” That day, I cried sadly on the walk home.

Paragraph 1
By the time I got home, my eyes were red and swollen. I found my grandpa in the bean field. His back bent into an arch and his face was drowned in sweats. I called him, in a choked voice. Sensing something wrong, he asked me what happened with great concern. I murmured the principal’s words, after which Grandpa fell silent, eyes rounding in disbelief. A surge of regret gnawing at my heart, I really hated to see my gray-haired Grandpa’s disappointment. Time ticking by, he heaved a long sigh, “My child, an award bought can’t be called an award.” I nodded understandingly. But who knew how reluctant and bitter I was?

Paragraph 2
I dragged into the principal’s office the next day, sad and disappointed. I knew I might never get that jacket which represented my years of hard work and expectation. However, I tried to fight back the tears, with my head still lifted with dignity. “My grandpa…won’t pay the dollars. He said if I had to pay for it, then it wouldn’t be a scholarship jacket.” There was a deafening silence. The principal looked at me, biting his lip, as if thinking. Finally, after what seemed like a century, he decided that he would make an exception for me. I could hardly believe it. Looking into his eyes, which brimmed with smiles, I stood up and bowed low to him. Only at that moment did I believe that Mr. Schmidt and my grandpa were right: never can awards be falsified or bought.

Willie Wilson would always live lite to the fullest. He was Mr. Popular at school, the star of his middle school basketball team, with dreams of going national team. At 13, his life changed. He couldn't see the words on the blackboard clearly in class. He couldn't read books without difficulty. Soon he hardly recognized his schoolmates in the halls.
His parents took him to the eye doctor. Willie could still slam-dunk like no one else, so they thought there was nothing serious to worry about. Maybe he just needed glasses. But it kept getting worse. By 15, he was almost completely blind.
Willie didn't handle the situation very well. He came home drunk and picked fights at school with anyone who dared to make fun of his blindness. "I was trying to show everyone that there was nothing wrong with me, ”he says. "To prove that I was still the same 'Thrill Willie Wilson'." That denial was blown away one Sunday when Willie heard news on TV. At 18, he gave his life to the Lord and read books in Braille, finding comfort in God's special love for those who are weak. He went to college and was a changed man.
His progress was stopped, though. He started to lose his hearing in the same way he had lost his eyesight. By 21, he was blind and deaf. He dropped out of school, stopped education and moved back home with his parents. This time, the doctors were able to tell the cause of his symptoms-a brain tumor.
Willie's world became doctors' appointments, hospitals and surgeries. His spare time was spent recalling in his childhood bedroom. His friends disappeared. He challenged himself to learn American Sign Language so he could communicate with others by feeling their hands. His parents and relatives found signing difficult, though. Instead, they drew letters into his hand. Willie grew frustrated by the lack of meaningful conversation.

He couldn’t even fold his own clothes or make himself a sandwich. “I just stayed in my bed,” he recalls. His faith in his dreams was fading, like the way his sight and hearing had.

His signing is improving and he often talks with his friends with his sharp sense of humor. He cooks meals and does his own laundry. Willie says, “I’m able to take care of my own business. I’m living life in my own way now—Willie style!”

I remember the day Dad first brought the heavy accordion(手風(fēng)琴) home. He gathered my mother and me in the living room and opened the case as if it were a treasure box. “Here it is,’’he said. “Once you learn to play, it’ll stay with you for life." If my thin smile didn’t match his great pleasure,it was because I had prayed for a guitar. For the next two weeks, the accordion was stored in?the?hall closet.?Then one?evening,?Dad?announced?that I would start?lessons?the following week.
Shortly after, my lessons began with Mr. Zelii at the Allegro Accordion School. On my first day, with straps(手風(fēng)琴皮帶) straining my shoulder" felt clumsy in every way. “How did he do?” my father asked when it was over. “Fine for the first lesson.”said Mr. Zelli. Dad glowed with hope. I was ordered to practice half an hour every day, and every day I tried to get out of it. My future seemed to be outside?playing?ball, not?in the?house?mastering?songs I would?soon?forget, but my parents urged me to practice.
Gradually,to my?surprise,?I was?able?to string?notes?together and coordinate?my?hands?to play simple songs. Often, after supper, my father would request a tune or two. As he sat in his easy chair, I would play through Lady of Spain and Beer Barrel Polka. "Very nice, better than last week," he’d say.
With the fall recital (演奏會)approaching, I would have to play a solo on a local movie theater’s stage. I wanted to skip the whole thing. Emotions boiled over in the car one Sunday afternoon.
“I don’t want to play a solo,”I said. “You have to,” replied my father. “Why?” I shouted. “Because you didn’t?get?to?play your violin when you?were a?kid??Why?should I have?to?play this stupid instrument when you never had to play yours?” Dad pulled the car over and pointed at me.
“Because you can?bring?people Joy.?You?can touch?their?hearts. That’s a?gift?I won’t?let?you throw away." He added softly, “Someday you’ll have the chance I never had: you’ll play beautiful music for your family. And you will understand why you’ve worked so hard. ”
I was?speechless.?I?had?rarely heard?Dad speak?with?such?feeling?about?anything, much?less the accordion. From then on, I practiced without parents’ making me.

1.答案:
The evening of the concert Mom wore glittery earrings and more makeup than I could remember. Dad got out of work early, putting on a suit and tie. They were an hour early, so we sat in the living room chatting nervously. I got the unspoken message that playing this one song was a dream for them. Finally, it was my turn. I walked to the chair stage and put on my performance without mistake. The applause spilled out, with a few hands still clapping after others had stopped. As the years went by, I went to college and the accordion stayed behind in the hall closet next to my father’s violin.
One afternoon several years later when my two children discovered it by accident. When I opened the case, they laughed and said, “Play it, play it.” Reluctantly, I strapped on the accordion and played some simple songs. Soon the kids were dancing in circles and giggling. Even my wife was laughing and clapping to the beat. My father’s words came back to me: “Someday you’ll have the chance I never had. Then you’ll understand.” I finally knew what it meant to work hard and sacrifice for others. Dad had been right all along: the most precious gift is to touch the hearts of those you love.
Mike licked (舔) the last of the chocolate ice cream. It was almost time to leave. He jumped into the car with his parents and headed off to the Olympic-sized pool for the big swim meet. When his race came up, Mike was confident. He was strong and swift. Mike climbed out the pool, smiling. He had just won first place.
A week later, it was time for another swim meet. Like before, Mike decided to enjoy his favorite flavored ice cream before they left home. As Mike climbed out the pool, his teammates patted (拍) him on the back. He’d taken first place again in his race.
As it turned out, Mike decided to have some chocolate ice cream before every one of the next few swim meets that came up. He began to think of it as his lucky charm. After several months of being placed in the top positions of every race he swam, Mike was feeling unbeatable. And he wouldn’t admit it, but he was also starting to feel a little uncomfortable. All that ice cream was adding a few pounds to his athletic swimmer’s build.
It didn't take long after that for Mike to start coming in second place---and then third and then last place in his races. The lucky chocolate ice cream had lost its magic. On the day of his next swim meet, his mother sat down at the table with him. “Mike, I think we need to talk about this. We all love ice cream, but it’s got lots of fat and sugar in it, and it’s not healthy for your body to eat so much of it.” Mike unwillingly agreed. His father offered to go running with him few days a week to help strengthen his muscles. The extra weight soon disappeared, and Mike found himself breathing easier at swim.
It was the last meet of the season, and Mike wasn’t sure what to expect. He felt healthy again, but he didn’t know if he still had any speed in the pool.

A Little Boy
A little boy selling magazines for school walked up to a house that people rarely visited. The house was very old and shabby and the owner hardly ever came out. When he did come out, he would not say hello to his neighbors or passers-by but simply glare at them.
The boy knocked on the door and waited, sweating from fear of the old man. The boy’s parents told him to stay away from the house, and a lot of other neighborhood children were told the same thing from their parents.
Dust found the boy lingering on and hesitating what to do. As he was ready to walk away, the door slowly opened. “What do you want?” the old man said impatiently. The little boy was very afraid but he had a quota ( 份 額 ) to meet for school with selling the magazines. So he got up the courage and said,“Uh, sir, I am selling these magazines and uh, I was wondering if you would like to buy one from me.”
The old man just stared at the boy. The boy could see inside the old man’s house and saw that he had dog figurines (小雕像) on the fireplace mantle. “Do you collect dogs?” the little boy asked. “Yes, I have many collections in my house. They are my family here and they are all I have.” The boy then felt sorry for the man, as it seemed that he was a very lonely soul.
“Well, I do have a magazine here for collectors. It is perfect for you. I also have one about dogs since you like dogs so much.” The old man was ready to close the door and said: “No, boy. I don’t need any magazines of any kind, now goodbye.”
The little boy was sad that he was not going to make his quota with the sale. He was also sad for the old man being so alone in the house that he owned. The boy went home and then had an idea. He had a little dog figurine that he got some years ago from an aunt. The figurine did not mean nearly as much to him since he had a real live dog and a large family.
The boy headed back down to the old man’s house. The dog figurine witnessed the little boy’s ending up opening the door once more. Upon seeing the boy for a second time, the old man couldn’t bring his anger under control any longer. “Haven’t I told you I need no magazines at all?” He snapped at the boy. “Yes, sir.” said the little boy with an uneasy expression on his face, “But I think you will like the figurine.” Then he handed it to the old man. Taking the figurine from the boy’s hands, the lonely soul was so astonished that words failed to convey his emotions, tears welling up in his eyes. Out of gratitude, he bought a magazine from the boy and saw him off.
From that day on something changed inside the old man. The neighborhood always found the old man hanging out and smiling at everyone. He showed his precious collections to children who were now very willing to play with him. He used to collect figurines in memory of a real live dog which had kept company with him for a long time before it died. But now, he wasn’t drowned in the sorrows and loneliness anymore. He had realized the true spirit of life!

“What’s wrong with you, dear?” said Granny Bell to a little boy, who sat near a wall at the back of the house. He had a book in his hand, and tears were in his eyes.
“We have all got a poem called Little Jim to learn,” said the boy, whose name was Tom Blair,” and the one who says the best is to get a prize from the master. But I don’t think I can learn it.”
“Why not?” said Granny Bell.
“The boys say that I can’t, and that I need not try,” said Tom in a sad tone. “Don’t mind what the boys say. Let them see that you can learn it.” said his frie
“But I don’t think I can.” said Tom,” it is so long, and some of the words are so hard. I know I need not try for the prize. But I would like to learn the poem as well as I can; for the boys laugh at me, and call me ‘Slow Tom’.”
“Well, dear,” said Granny Bell, in a kind voice, “if you are slow, and can’t help it, try to be slow and sure, as they say. Look at the snail(蝸牛) on the wall; how slow it is! And yet, if you watch it, you will see it will get to the top in time. So just try to learn a few lines each day, and you may gain the prize in the end. And when you feel like losing heart, think of the snail on the wall.”
After Granny Bell had said this, she went on her way. And Tom thought that, though he could not keep up with the boys, he might run a race with the snail. So he determined to try to learn his task by the time the snail got to the top of the wall.

Paragraph 1:
At last, the day came on which the master was to give the prize, and after he called upon five or six boys to repeat the poem, it came to Tom’s turn. Regardless of the unfriendly whispers and giggles among the boys, Tom closed his eyes and took a deep breath, then started to recite the poem, slow and sure, with a peaceful yet powerful voice. The classroom suddenly fell into silence, only Tom’s voice ringing around. Everyone was astonished at the fluency and proficiency with which he spoke, and the master was no exception. The moment he finished, a shower of applause exploded.
Paragraph 2:
“Well done!Tom! Well done! Tell me how you made it!” said the master with great joy. Tom scratched his head with a shy smile, and told the story of Granny Bell with tears shinning in his eyes. “I know I am as slow as a snail, but the snail also can achieve his dream with great persistence and determination.” In another huge wave of cheers, the master gave the prize to Tom who deserved it well. We may face difficulties and prejudice in life, but nothing is impossible if we put our heart into it.
