My granddad often helped me make a tool to catch fish when I was young and we would spend hours along a river. It was lovely for both of us then. Many more of today’s grandparents have a growing sense of adventure. And a trend is catching on: skip-gen travel — grandparents taking fun-filled vacations with grand kids without their parents along.
A survey found that 83% of grandparents put travel with their grand kids as the number one thing when they retire. Skip-gen travel gets popular for good reason. Kids have their lives enriched and learn outside classrooms. This is also a time of talking and sharing ideas.
“How grandparents talk to children is different from how parents talk to them. Actually, I feel on a more equal footing with my grandchildren than I do with my own children,” Annie Collins, a travel architect and also part of the trend, says. “Kids away from their parents are more open to ideas and willing to express themselves. It’s not just kids gaining from traveling. Who gets the most out of this? You might think it’s them but it’s us.” According to a study by the Cleveland Clinic, grandparents who help watch and spend time with grand kids may actually live longer than their peers(同齡人).
It’s also important to recognize that grandparents often have more time to travel. Unlike their children, who may still be in the pursuit of a personal career that offers limited time off, grandparents are often retired and likely have a different viewpoint on life, prioritizing experiences and family. So knowing the kids are in great hands, moms and dads will have a bit of time to themselves — some much-needed leisure time alone to rest and recharge their batteries.
However, skip-gen travel is not for every grandparent. After all, grandparents are worn out with years and not so energetic. They surely treasure the chance to form close ties with their grandchildren, but it’s wiser to say no when only the youth could enjoy themselves, for the travel should be a win for everyone involved.
39.Why does the author mention fishing experiences with his granddad?
A.To lead in the trend of skip-gen travel. B.To share the pleasure in going fishing.
C.To stress the importance of family ties. D.To show the growing interest in adventure.
40.Which of the following may Annie Collins agree?
A.Many parents are too strict with children.
B.Grandparents benefit more from skip-gen travel.
C.Spending time with grandparents is better for kids.
D.Children become mature when away from parents.
41.What do we know about the parents whose kids are on skip-gen travel?
A.They enjoy the moment to relax. B.They feel less anxious and stressed.
C.They miss their kids very much. D.They look forward to their own trip.
42.What does the author suggest grandparents do?
A.Get kids involved in travel planning. B.Strengthen the bond with grandchildren.
C.Reduce skip-gen travel appropriately. D.Make decisions in both sides’ interests.
Hadi Partovi, founder of Code. org believes every student should learn the basics of computer science just like they do math, physics, or biology, regardless of what they want to do in the future. The expert says knowledge about the subject is important to understand how the world around us works and compares it to learning about photosynthesis (光合作用), even though not every student is going to be a botanist. To spark students’ interest, he created the “Hour of Code”, which introduces the world of computing to anyone, from ages 14 to 104, in a fun, interactive manner. Observed annually during Computer Science Week, the event now draws tens of millions of kids from over 180 countries.
The “Hour of Code”, which can be scheduled anytime during Computer Science Week, begins with an introductory video on computer science. Participants can then select from hundreds of fun assignments that are sorted by both grade level and coding experience. Though each project is designed to last just sixty minutes, beginners can deal with as many challenges as they desire.
To help introduce computer science in classrooms on a more regular basis, Code. org has also developed a catalog of online courses that can be incorporated (納入) in a school’s regular curriculum. Since the nonprofit began offering the courses in 2013, over 704, 000 teachers have signed up to teach introductory computer science to over 22 million students worldwide.
Thanks to the efforts of the pioneer, about 40 percent of US schools now offer computer science as a subject. The numbers are even higher — an impressive 70 percent — if after-school offerings such as robotics clubs are included. Even more encouraging, eight years ago, just 19,390 students took an Advanced Placement Computer Science exam. By the spring of 2017, the number had jumped 415 percent to 99,868.
43.Why did Hardi Partovi create the “Hour of Code”?
A.To introduce computing to more children.
B.To add a programme to Computer Science Week.
C.To help people learn computer science in a fun way.
D.To train computer scientists for his future program.
44.The “Hour of Code” is so called most probably because _____.
A.it can be scheduled anytime.
B.its projects last sixty minutes each.
C.it will surely attract more students to attend.
D.its tasks can be sorted by coding experience.
45.What do we know about Code. org’s online courses?
A.They help the developer make lots of money.
B.They have existed for over 10 years up to now.
C.Over 704, 000 teachers have been learning them.
D.Schools can use them regularly in their classrooms.
46.What do the numbers show in the last paragraph?
A.The influence of robotics clubs.
B.The effect of Hadi Partovi’s efforts.
C.The development of many US schools.
D.The efforts that Hadi Partovi has made.
There are 195 countries in the world today but almost none of them have purple on their national flag. So what’s wrong with purple? It’s such a popular color today. Why would no country use it in their flag? The answer is really quite simple. Purple was just for too expensive.
The color purple has been associated with royalty power and wealth for centuries. Queen Elizabeth I forbade anyone except close members of the royal family to wear it. Purple’s high status comes from the rarity and cost of the dye (染料)originally used to produce it. Fabric traders got the dye from a small sea snail (海螺)that was only found in the Tyre region of the Mediterranean. More than 10,000 snails were needed to create just one gram of purple; not to mention a lot of work went into producing the dye, which made purple dye so expensive.
Since only wealthy rulers could afford to buy and wear the color, it became associated with the royal family. Sometimes, however, the dye was too expensive even for royalty. Third century Roman Emperor Aurelio famously wouldn’t allow his wife to buy a scarf made from purple silk because it cost three times its weight in gold. A single pound of dye cost three pounds of gold, which equals 56,000 dollars today. Therefore, even the richest countries couldn’t spend that much having purple on their flags.
The dye became more accessible to lower-class about a century and a half ago. In 1856, 18-year-old English chemist William Henry Perkin accidentally created a man-made purple compound (化合物)while attempting to produce an anti-malaria drug. He noticed that the compound could be used to dye fabrics, so he patented the dye, manufactured it and got rich. Purple dye was then mass-produced so everybody could afford it.
Till now, a handful of new national flags have been designed and a few of them have chosen to use purple in their flag. So don’t be making any bets just yet.
47.Why was color purple expensive in the past?
A.Because only royal families were allowed to wear purple.
B.Because it took a long time to get purple dye from gold.
C.Because purple was worth as much as its weight in gold.
D.Because purple dye used to be rare and hard to produce.
48.Why did Roman Emperor Aurelio forbid his wife to buy a purple scarf?
A.Because of poor quality. B.Because of long tradition.
C.Because of bad taste. D.Because of high price.
49.What is purple's situation now?
A.Purple has been widely used on national flags.
B.Purple dye is now affordable to ordinary people.
C.Royal family stop using purple because it’s too common.
D.Fewer snails are used to produce purple dye than before.
50.Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?
A.No Purple Flags? B.Purple vs Gold
C.How to Produce Purple Dye? D.The Birth of Purple Color

Yoghurt
It was a rough week. The price of oil skyrocketed as the temperature dropped sharply in Maine. I had missed three days of wok so my paycheck was going to be lower than normal. I was stresses, to say the least. I shopped strategically, looking for every possible way to cut pennies so I could buy groceries and keep the house warm.
My eight-year-old son didn’t understand when I told him we were struggling that week. He wanted a special kind of yoghurt, but I didn't have the extra three dollars to buy it for him. It was the kind of yoghurt with a cartoon kid riding a skateboard on the front of the box, and a mere two spoonfuls in each cup. It was the kind of product that wastes a parent’s money and makes me hate advertising.
I felt guilty as a parent when those big eyes looked at me with confusion, as if to say, “It’s just yoghurt. What’s the big deal?” So I found a way. I put something back as single mothers often do. He got his yoghurt.
On the way driving back from the grocery store, I noticed a homeless man holding a sign by the side of the road. My heart hurt, and I tried not to look at him. I watched people stay away from him on the street and walk by without even meeting his eyes. My son didn’t seem to care much, either. I looked at the man closely then— bare hands grasping a piece of cardboard, snot(鼻涕) frozen to his face, a worn-out jacket. And there I was struggling because I had to buy oil and groceries, But I decided to help. I pulled over to the man and handed him a five-dollar bill.

Seeing this, my son became confused and surprised.

本文是一篇說明文。隨著越來越多祖父母冒險意識的增強,跨代旅游開始流行起來。研究發(fā)現(xiàn),跨代旅游對祖父母、父母以及孩子均大有禪益。
39.
推理判斷題。根據(jù)第一段的“My granddad often helped me make a tool to catch fish when I was young and we would spend hours along a river. It was lovely for both of us then. Many more of today's grandparents have a growing sense of adventure. And a trend is catching on: skip-gen travel(我小的時候,爺爺經(jīng)常幫我做一個捕魚的工具,我們會在河邊呆上幾個小時。那時候?qū)ξ覀儌z來說都很美好。如今,越來越多的祖父母有了一種越來越強烈的冒險意識。一種趨勢正在興起:跨代旅行)”可知,作者提到自己小時候與爺爺一起抓魚的經(jīng)歷是為了引出如今祖父母輩與孫輩之間新的相處模式,即跨代旅游。故選A。
40.
推理判斷題。根據(jù)第三段的“Actually, I feel on a more equal footing with my grandchildren than I do with my own children(事實上,我覺得我和我的孫輩比我和我自己的孩子更平等)”以及“It’s not just kids gaining from traveling.Who gets the most out of this? You might think it's them but it's us(這不僅僅是孩子們從旅行中獲得的。誰能從中獲益最多?你可能認(rèn)為是他們,但其實是我們)”可以推斷出,身為祖母和跨代旅游的實踐者,Annie Collins認(rèn)為祖父母輩從跨代旅游中受益更多。故選B。
41.
細(xì)節(jié)理解題。根據(jù)第四段的“So knowing the kids are in great hands, moms and dads will have a bit of time to themselves- some much-needed leisure time alone to rest and recharge their batteries(所以知道孩子們被照顧得很好,父母們就會有一些屬于他們自己的時間——一些他們急需的閑暇時間來休息和充電)”可知,當(dāng)孩子與祖父母外出旅游時,父母也能擁有自己的休閑時間,用來放松和休整。故選A。
42.
細(xì)節(jié)理解題。根據(jù)最后一段的“They surely treasure the chance to form close ties with their grandchildren, but it's wiser to say no when only the youth could enjoy themselves, for the travel should be a win for everyone involved(他們肯定會珍惜這個與孫輩建立親密關(guān)系的機會,但當(dāng)只有年輕人可以享受時,明智的做法是說不,因為這趟旅行對參與其中的每個人都應(yīng)該是一個勝利)”可知,作者認(rèn)為跨代旅游應(yīng)該是一件雙贏的事,只有對祖父母和孩子都有利時才應(yīng)進行,由此可知,作者建議祖父母做有利于雙方利益的決定。故選D。

77.Seeing this, my son became confused and surprised. “Mum, why are you so generous to this stranger while so mean to me when I asked for a yoghurt?” I explained that if we were blind to the poor man’s situation he would be freezing. He didn’t have a home or food to eat after all. We could spare five dollars even if we were financially stressed. Finally, my son nodded and fixed his eyes on his yoghurt.
Then, my son performed an act that most adults wouldn’t have done. He took his yoghurt and handed it to the man outside his window. Even if it was just a matter of a few spoons of yoghurt, it was all he had, and he gave it to someone who needed it more than he wanted it. He showed me that I was doing well as a mother. There are always blessings to count if we open our eyes, and always have the opportunity to be a blessing for someone else.
