Test 1(2021·廣東茂名·高三月考)
When I was young, I lived in a small village in Melaka. The spirit of neighborliness was very strong then. The village had a variety of trades to serve the needs of the villagers. There was a barber, tailor, coffee shop owner, grocer, and so on. All of us were quite poor but we got by. However, one family which could be considered as living a marginal existence was the Lim family living in the bicycle shop opposite our dwelling.
Mr. Lim, the bicycle mechanic, had a large brood of children — twelve to be exact. My mother was a kind-hearted soul. Often, she would remark that his children were dressed in ragged clothes and looked malnourished (營養(yǎng)不良的). My family was relatively better off in the village. My parents would bring over whatever food we could spare to the Lim family.
I remember one particular year when times were very hard. Even my family had to make do with two meals a day. We stopped the practice of giving food to Mr. Lim. One day, I noticed my mother looking troubled. She had learned that the Lim family had not been eating for the past two days. She decided to sacrifice a portion of our meals to the family despite the protests (抗議) from my brothers that were too hungry. Fortunately, the lean spell (困難時期) did not last long, and the children in our family resumed our three meals a day again.
As time went on, the number of customers at Lim's shop had increased rapidly. Business at his shop took off like a rocket as Japanese bikes were very useful and popular for transport. They were much better off than before.
It was at this time that my father's health was worsening. We were confused by the mysterious illness he was suffering from. Because of lack of attention to his provision shop (食品店), the business became worse. My father then sold our family car to pay off the mounting bills. My brothers and I had to stop schooling because we could not afford the fees.

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】One possible version:
They say that one good deed deserves another. Mr. Lim, our neighbor, came to learn of our plight and stepped in to help. He stated simply that it was his turn to repay the kindness that my parents had shown to him in the past. Through his connections, Mr. Lim arranged for my father to consult a famous doctor. Not only was this doctor's diagnosis of my father's medical condition accurate, but he was also able to cure my father. Besides, he arranged for a loan for my father's business. He also told my brothers and I that we should not give up our education. He then arranged to finance our education as long as we needed it.
With the help of Mr. Lim, the situation in my family took a turn for the better. My father recovered from his illness gradually and his business recovered the next year. My father is now the proud owner of the village mini-market. Mr. Lim has expanded his business, too. My brothers and I are among the top students in the school. Whenever my parents met up with Mr. Lim, they would thank him for his past help. He would just shrug off their thanks and say simply that he was merely repaying a kindness. The children in both families have brotherly friendship now. The story between the Lim family and my family has proved a saying that kindness begets kindness.

“Tom!” she cried.“Help!”
No reply. If only she hadn’t left her mobile phone in that bag with Tom. Jane kept moving, as night was beginning to fall, Jane was so tired that she had to stop for the night. Lying awake in the dark, Jane started to miss her husband, Tom. She wanted to tell him how much she loved him.
Jane rose(起身) at the break of day(黎明), hungry and thirsty. She could hear water trickling (滴落) somewhere at a distance. Quickly she followed the sound to a river. To her great joy, she also saw some berry bushes(漿果叢林). She drank and ate a few berries. Feeling stronger now, Jane began to walk along the river and hope it would lead her to the lake.
Fortunately,Jane heard a helicopter(直升飛機). Is that for me? Unfortunately, the trees made it impossible for people to see her from above. A few minutes later, another helicopter flew overhead. But no more helicopters came and it was getting dark again. Jane was so tired, hungry, and extremely frightened. She thought to herself, “If only I had not quarrelled with Tom. Where is Tom? He must have made the emergency call. What I need is enough courage. If I continue my spirits tomorrow, I will be likely to guide the helicopter.” Lying beside the river, she fell asleep very soon. Suddenly, she heard the shouts of tigers, which made her scared to death. After she held her breath for a few minutes, everything was quiet again. In the terrible darkness, she slept again.
It was daybreak when Jane woke up. She caught sight of a fisherman at a distance, with whose help she climbed to an open area. To her great joy, a helicopter flew overhead just at that moment. The fisherman helped flag her yellow blouse wildly. This did catch the rescuers' attention! Jane was rescued. Seeing Tom, she told him how much she missed him. Never would they be away from each other. Tom gave her the warmest and longest hug she had ever received.

Test 3(2021·河北高三月考)
The last race of the day was over. My breathing gradually stilled along with the ripples in the pool, but I stayed in the water, watching sadly as the winners gathered for the medals ceremony.
“Don't look so sad,” I heard a voice say behind me. I turned around to see a tall, blond, blue-eyed man standing on the edge of the pool. “You came in fourth, but you are the best in your country.” he said smiling. “I'm Ken Schafer, and you?”
“Rima Datta.”
“And how old are you, Rima?”
“Fourteen, Sir” I replied lifting myself out of the water. Ken was a swimming coach from California and asked me about my life as a swimmer until then.
My eldest brother, Anil, had taught me how to swim, but I had no real training until I was nine when a coach from the National Institute of Sports came for just three months a year to train the boys at Mayo College, where our father taught. She set aside a couple of hours a week for the daughters of the staff. It was she who had corrected my mistakes and encouraged me to take part in competitions.
Surprised to hear how little steady training I had had, Ken introduced me to the National Institute of Sports in Patiala to be trained in this summer. The train was hard, and I felt quite lonely away from my parents and all that was familiar. But it was Ken, with his tireless enthusiasm, his passion for swimming, and his faith in me that kept me focused.
I won my first gold medal at the national championship that year, a fact that filled me with immense joy and Ken with a sense of satisfaction that his work with me was paying off. Yet he realized that what I really needed was a team to train with and steady coaching year-round.
Then he persuaded my parents to allow me to go to California and train there for a year. He even helped find out a host family for me.

【答案】Para 1:
Alone on the long flight to Los Angeles, I was filled with doubts, as I had never lived with a strange family. How would I manage to live with people I had never met before? What if the host family I didn't get along? Would I fit in? I needn't have worried. From the first moment at the airport where they had come to receive me, I knew things would be all right. Their smiles and their words of welcome as they greeted me felt like a warm embrace. I could not have found a kinder, more generous family than theirs.
Para 2:
The kindness of the host family and Ken gave me all the practical and emotional support I needed to train in a swimming club of California. During my stay there, it was the mother of my host family who drove me to and from the training center every day. She could cook delicious food and she knew how to comfort me while I was homesick. The training was hard, yet it was Ken who always showed me concern and encouraged me to keep going. My swimming performance improved slowly but steadily. From those kind people I have learned generosity, love, and kindness.

Test 4(2021·浙江高三模擬預測)
The passengers on the bus watched with sympathy as Susan made her way carefully up the steps. She paid the driver and then, using her hands to feel the seats, settled in one of them.
It had been a year since Susan became blind. As the result of an accident she was suddenly thrown into a world of darkness. Susan’s husband Mark watched her sink into hopelessness and he was determined to use every possible means to help his wife.
Finally, Susan felt ready to return to her job, but how would she get there? She used to take the bus, but she was now too frightened to get around the city by herself. Mark volunteered to ride the bus with Susan each morning and evening until she could manage it by herself.
For two weeks, Mark accompanied Susan to and from work each day. He taught her how to rely on her other senses, specifically her hearing, to determine where she was and how to adapt to her new environment.
At last, Susan decided that she was ready to try the trip on her own. Monday morning arrived. Before she left, she hugged her husband tightly, her eyes filled with tears of gratitude (感激). She said good-bye and, for the first time, they went their separate ways. Each day went perfectly, and a wild excitement took hold of Susan. She was doing it!

【答案】On Friday morning, Susan took the bus to work as usual. As she was getting off the bus, the driver Said, “Miss, I sure envy you.” Curious, Susan asked the driver why. “You know, every morning for the past week, a fine-looking gentleman a military uniform has been standing across the corner watching you until you enter your office building safely. Then he blows you a kiss, gives you a little salute and walks away. You are one lucky lady.” the bus driver said.
Tears of happiness poured down Susan’s cheeks. Although she couldn' t physically see him, she had always felt Mark's presents. She was so lucky for he had given her a gift more powerful than sight, a gift she didn't need to see to believe. That is the gift of love that can bring light where there is darkness.

Test 5(2021·山東高三月考)
On an ordinary Thursday afternoon, I turned up the next walkway. Children played in the yards along the block. I waved to them as I walked by, delivering mail at houses along the way.
Some mailmen preferred routes where they drove a truck and slipped the mail into a collection of mailboxes without seeing anyone face to face. Not me. I wanted to be outside talking to people. That's where the excitement was. The lady who lived there opened the door wide. “Hello,” she said. I knew what she was waiting for. I've got your book club selection,” I said, handing over her package.
There were only about 700 people on my route. Over the years I'd gotten to know most of them, if not in person then by their mail. There were the folks who got magazines, or book after book, those who loved their catalogues, and some who had steady pen pals. I knew I provided an important service in my job. College acceptances, birthday presents, postcards from all corners of the world — they could all make someone's day. I also brought doctor bills and insurance notices.
Mrs. Dorman at the end of my route got a package from the Home Shopping Network almost every day. She was an older lady, who'd turned 78, and I liked being able to bring a little joy into her life with my delivery. She got her blood pressure pills and blood test kits for diabetes (糖尿病) in the Yesmail. Yes, convenient. But I was just the messenger, showing up every day like clockwork. It wasn't me who was making a difference in people's lives. Not me personally. A friendly hello, a chat with a lonely person. That was the most I could offer.
I dug in my bag for Mrs. Dorman's mail — and the inevitable Home Shopping Network package. She'd be glad to get this, whatever it was. Mrs. Dorman often waited for me at the door and we always had a nice talk, but not today.

Mrs. Dorman was back home from hospital within a few days, her broken shoulder in a sling (懸?guī)?.________________________________________________________________________________
__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】I heard the TV going inside so I knew she was home. I knocked at the door, but no one answered. A little worried, I pushed it open, stepped into the house and found Mrs. Dorman lying face down in the hallway. Her arm was caught in an armchair which fell on top of her. She seemed to be having trouble breathing — probably from the heavy chair. I called 91l immediately. Arriving fast, they lifted Mrs. Dorman onto a stretcher and carried her to the ambulance.
Mrs. Dorman was back home within a few days, her broken shoulder in a sling. I was sure happy the day she greeted me at the door herself again. We greeted each other as usual. “I was watching TV on Thursday morning and lost my balance getting up,” she explained. “All that time I was praying. Praying for you. I knew you'd come just as you do every day. That's what gave me comfort.” I realized I could make some difference to their life. It was just an ordinary Thursday. And that was extraordinary.

Test 6(2021·沈陽市第一二〇中學高三三模)
When I was a very young man, I was invited to dine at the home of a celebrity. After dinner, we were led to an enormous drawing room, and my eyes witnessed two sights: servants arranging chairs, and musical instruments up front.
Apparently I was “in for” an evening of music.I use the phrase “in for” because music meant nothing to me.I am almost tone deaf - only with great effort can I figure out the simplest tune, and serious music was no more than an arrangement of noises. So when the music started, I tried to pretend an expression of intelligent appreciation, closing my ears from the inside with completely irrelevant thoughts.
After a while, people around me were applauding, and so did I.But at once I heard a gentle voice on my right: “You are fond of Bach (巴赫)?” I knew nothing about Bach, but I did know one of the most famous faces in the world - I was sitting next to Albert Einstein.
“Well,” I thought it was a casual question. But I could see from his serious look that it was not merely out of politeness.“I don't know anything about Bach,” I said awkwardly.“I've never heard any of his music.”
“You have never heard Bach?” He made it sound as if I were stupid.
“It isn't that I don't want to like Bach,” I replied.“It's just that I'm tone deaf, or almost tone deaf, and I've never really figured out the tune.”
A look of concern came into the old man's face.“Please,” he said suddenly.“You will come with me?” As he led me across that crowded room,I kept my embarrassed glance at the carpet. He led me upstairs and drew me in a room with a piano.“Now,” he said with a smile.“How long you have felt this way about music?” “All my life,” I said, feeling awful.“I wish you would go back downstairs and listen, Dr.Einstein.It doesn't really matter.” But Einstein shook his head and continued.

______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】 “Tell me, please,” he said “Any music you do like so that we can start?” I replied that I liked the songs where I could follow the tune, with an example he perfectly accepted. He went to the piano, and in a moment, the room was filled with the familiar tune.He then asked me to sing the tune, for which I tried desperately to stay in tune.“You see!” he cried with a delighted face like sunrise.“You do have an ear!” Though concerned about proving nothing with a familiar tune, I was encouraged by Einstein to start with the simple, with more difficult part following later, in case of ruining my enthusiasm for further learning with only a small mistake made.
“Since you have mastered the simpler now we can go on to something more complex,” he said.I did it with a surprising degree of accuracy after this second tune.Einstein stared at me with such an astonishing look as only seen from my father at my graduation ceremony.“Excellent!” Einstein remarked when I finished.“Now this!” Difficult as it was for a freshman, I managed to reproduce approximate sounds.“Now, young man,” he said, putting his arm through mine.“We are ready to return for the rest of the concert!” This time I allowed myself to just listen, and when the concert was finished, I finally added my genuine applause to that of others.

Test 7(2021·湖北安陸·高三月考)
I grew up in a large family of twelve siblings(兄弟姐妹).We weren’t poor by most standards, but things were definitely tight for us. My parents never shared their financial worries. Instead, they chose to let us have a carefree childhood. But despite their consideration, I knew, as children often do, that there were times they went without and that certain things my friends had wouldn’t be available to me.
Back in those days, hot lunch was a luxury for the wealthier kids, and hot-lunch buyers sat separately from the students who brought cold lunch. My siblings and I brought lunch from home every day: thick slices of homemade bread hiding one scant slice of bologna, three oatmeal cookies, and a small apple. We would look on longingly as the rich kids proudly sat down with their steaming plates of fried chicken or fish sticks and potato puffs, cartons of cold milk, chilled peaches and a slice of cake.
I never said anything, but my first grade teacher, Mrs. Caruso, must have seen the desire in my eyes. One day she quietly pressed a note into my hand and whispered, “Give this to your mother.”
I skipped home and gave my mom the note. She read it and smiled. “Well, Mrs. Caruso said because of all your hard work, she wants to buy your lunch tomorrow.” The next day, I proudly carried my tray of chicken fricassee across the cafeteria and took my seat at the hot-lunch table. Honestly, the food wasn’t as great as I had imagined, but I was pleased to be there and felt honored to be a part of the group.
One rainy day, Mrs. Caruso asked me to stay after school. My stomach instantly dropped to the floor. Surely, I must be in trouble! Did she know I hadn't finished my math sheet? Did she see me teasing Billy on the playground?

______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】After the other students had left, Mrs. Caruso said she was going to finish her work and then drive me home. It was raining, and she knew I had a long walk. We pulled up at my house and she got out, taking out a few bags on the porch. “Tell your mom I had a few extra things she might want,” she said Then she drove away. Inside the bags were clothes, toys, and books. That summer, Mrs. Caruso invited us all to her home. She gave us lemonade and sugar cookies, and we were amazed at the fancy fruits in her backyard.
I don’t know why Mrs. Caruso helped my family. Maybe she also grew up in a family that struggled. Maybe she knew what it was like to feel just a little less than everyone else. Somehow, even with her quiet char-ity, she never made me feel ashamed. She just made me feel loved and important. Thanks to her, I learned that I had just as much night as anyone to sit at the hot-lunch table. I don’t remember what Mrs. Caruso looked like anymore, but I do remember how she made me feel. I’ve never lost that feeling of being important to someone and being protected by her. After all these years, I’m still grateful to that wonderful teacher.

Test 8(2021·重慶市秀山高級中學校高三月考)
One day when I was 12, my mother gave me an order: I was to walk to the public library, and borrow at least one book for the summer. This was one more weapon for her to defeat my strange problem—inability to read.
In the library, I found my way into the "Children's Room". I sat down on the floor and pulled a few books off the shelf at random. The cover of a book caught my eye. It presented a picture of a beagle. I had recently had a beagle, the first and only animal companion I ever had as a child. He was my secret sharer, but one morning, he was gone, given away to someone who had the space and the money to care for him. I never forgot my beagle.
There on the book's cover was a beagle which looked identical to my dog. I ran my fingers over the picture of the dog on the cover. My eyes ran across the title, Amos, the Beagle with a Plan. Unknowingly, I had read the title. Without opening the book, I borrowed it from the library for the summer.
Under the shade of a bush, I started to read about Amos. I read very, very slowly with difficulty. Though pages were turned slowly, I got the main idea of the story about a dog who, like mine, had been separated from his family and who finally found his way back home. That dog was my dog, and I was the little boy in the book. At the end of the story, my mind continued the final scene of reunion, on and on, until my own lost dog and I were, in my mind, running together. When I finished my reading, a stream of tears ran down my cheeks. It was until then that I realized I had overcome my inability to read. Thus, this was the very first book for me that I had read through and deeply immersed in real sense.

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph two: Last year, my mother was so proud that her son was rewarded a PhD in literature._____
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】My mother’s call returned me to the real world. I suddenly realized something: Books could be incredibly wonderful and I was going to read them. From then on, I kept going to the library more often. In the library, I was exposed to different types of books: detective stories, love stories, poems and so on. My mother encouraged me to spend time doing my favorite thing. Day by day, I finally succeeded in overcoming my inability to read. Moreover, I began to write some stories by myself. When I went to university, I chose literature as my major.
Last year, my mother was so proud that I was rewarded a PhD in literature. I never told my mother about my “miraculous” experience that summer, which raised my interest in books and also gave me a specific direction in the days that followed. Obviously, It was the very first book---Amos, the Beagle with a Plan---that made me what I am today. This year, I began writing my first book on the topic of my beagle. I hope it could be my lifelong career.

Test 9(2021·中區(qū)·山東省實驗中學高三模擬預測)
Algebra (代數(shù)) was my last class of the day. After the class, Mrs. Sharpnack asked me to stay to discuss my midterm math exam, which I had failed. Although I did well in language and many other subjects, I wouldn’t be on the honor roll (光榮榜) that term if I couldn’t soon make big progress in math. In just a few weeks, the names of the honor roll students would be read during the class. I was so sad.
Seeing my sadness, Mrs. Sharpnack said, “Do you want me to spare some time to help with your math? I think you can make big and quick progress.” But I just wanted to go home and never think about algebra again. “No, thanks,” I said. And I explained, “Unlike other students in my class, I am just not good at this kind of math. And no amount of studying will change that.”
I almost cried when I talked about it. Mrs. Sharpnack comforted me, saying, “If we work together, I believe you can change it.” For a moment, I wondered if she would be right. “What time does your bus come?” she asked. I had 30 minutes left before my bus came, and I told her so. She asked if I would like to use that time to go over the math problems I had met. Encouraged by her, I answered. “I guess so.”
We started right then and made a plan to meet each day for two weeks, after which Mrs. Sharpnack would give me a test to check my progress. After Mrs. Sharpnack helped me go over a few problems that day, it was time for my bus to come. I waved her goodbye. In the following days, I continued staying with Mrs. Sharpnack after class. She went over each problem, carefully explaining the solutions.
Sometimes I still couldn’t understand what she had said. She stayed calm, though, and would think of a different way to explain the answer. The day to take the test came quickly.

Paragraph 2:The next morning, Mrs. Sharpnack came in with graded papers.____________________
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】Paragraph 1: Mrs. Sharpnack handed out test papers. When I started working, I was nervous. Looking at the test paper, I found the questions were hard and wanted to give up. But then, I remembered how hard we had worked together and how many times Mrs. Sharpnack had said I could make progress. So I kept calm and focused all my attention on the questions, trying to refresh my memory about the examples Mrs. Sharpnack had used. Two hours later, I finished the test and handed the paper back to her.
Paragraph 2: The next morning, Mrs. Sharpnack came in with graded papers. She stood in front of the class and read names on the honor roll. She looked at me with encouragement while reading my name. She smiled with great satisfaction as she looked at me. With surprise on one hand and happiness on the other, tears welled up in my eyes. Things were different after that. I showed an interest in algebra and gradually became quite good at it. I was so thankful to her, who improved not only my study but
also my confidence.

The Magical Gift
The night had prepared its starry suit for the duty. Anayah's house was decorated with lights, balloons and other fancy things. Today was Anayah's seventh birthday. The best part of her birthday's celebration she liked was that she got lots of gifts from her friends and relatives. When all the guests left the house, Anayah unwrapped (打開) the gifts, full of surprise and joy. Finally she found an unnamed diary and something was written on the first page of it. It said, “Dear Anayah, happy birthday. I am a magical diary. You can call me Mr. Dodo. Each day before you go to sleep, you can put one wish that can't be greedy on me. I will fulfill it until your next birthday, but in return you have to do one task of mine for each wish.”
Anayah exclaimed in joy, “Wow! This is wonderful.” Without thinking much, she wrote down in it, “Dear Mr. Dodo, I wish if I could meet my grandmother soon, please.” Next day Anayah's mother woke her up early in the morning. She told her that her grandmother was coming there in half an hour. Anayah got amazed by the news. Her wish was about to be fulfilled. It was a magical diary. He had assigned (安排) her one task.
