Atlanta.Remember?SsYes.TWho was Atlanta?SsShe was a Greek princess.TGood.What was she good at?S1She was good at running.She could even run faster than men in Greece.TWhat did she want to do in the story?S2She wanted to marry a man who can run faster than her.TWhy?S3Because she was angry at the fact that women were not allowed to take part in the ancient Olympic Games.TDid any man come to compete against her?S4Yes.And among the men there was one named Hippomenes.TWas he sure to win Atlanta?SsNo.TSo what did he do in order to beat her?S5He went to the Greek Goddess of Love to ask for help.TDid the Goddess help him?S6Yes.She gave him three golden apples to attract Atlantas attention.TDo you think Hippomenes would win the race and marry Atlanta?SsYes/No.TSome say yes some say no.Lets listen and find out.Step 2 Listening to the first listening material Page 151.Predicting the result of the story and getting the general idea.Get the Ss to read the statements in Ex.2 on Page 15 and predict the possible result and content of the story.TPlease open your book and turn to Page 15.Read the statements quickly and guess which can be the possible general idea of the story.TNow lets listen to the tape for the first time and try to choose the right answer.Play the tape for the first time then check the answer.TNow did you understand the story?SsYes.TWho won the race,Atlanta or Hippomenes?SsHippomenes.TRight.Now lets see the general idea of the story.Which one is the answer?Why?S7The fourth one.The first one was wrong because it is only half true.Atlanta races because she does not want to marry anybody less good than herself.The second is wrong because it only tells a part of the story.Atlanta does not agree to marry the man until he wins the race against her.The third one is not quite true.The man did need help to win the race against Atlanta but it was not cheatingas Atlanta had the choice of picking up the apples or not during the race.TVery good job.Now lets come to Ex.1.2.Arranging the order of the storyTPlease read the sentences of quickly and make sure that you understand each of them.Pay attention to the story when youre listening.Play the tape for the second time and pause at the key sentences.Then get them to work in pairs and discuss the answer.And then play the tape for the third time for them check their answers.At last get some students to
