I am a parent, and I als have t struggle daily with my daughter's hmewrk. I can certainly identify with the ther parents' anxiety. Here, hwever, I'd like t speak as a teacher rather than a parent. I'd like t explain why, in my prfessinal pinin, American kids need hmewrk.
I teach bilgy at a high schl in Clumbus, Ohi. I have t teach scientific methds and scientific writing in my class. It's a lt t fit int ne shrt year, and I require quite a lt f effrt frm my students. I require my students t read ne chapter ut f their textbk each week, and t cmplete a shrt take-hme quiz n the material, s that I can spend mre class time n labs and ther hands-n activities, which are the best way fr students t learn. S, if I'm ging t ffer such activities in class, I need students t put in sme time and effrt studying utside f class as well.
Hwever, sme parents think their kids are getting t much wrk. One argument is t cmpare American students with thse in ther cuntries. Sme parents pint ut that students in many verseas cuntries are scring higher than American children, while being assigned(布置)less hmewrk. Japan was ften used as an example. Why, then, d they achieve mre? The answer cmes when yu lk at the differences in ur cultures and ur views n educatin. Japanese teachers may nt be assigning much hmewrk, but mst f the students have t attend many after-schl prgrams that prepare them t get int the high schls and clleges that they dream f. S, Japanese kids d a lt f academic wrk utside f schl, just nt necessarily wrk assigned by their classrm teachers.
Of curse, there is rm fr cmprmise n the hmewrk debate. In their bk Refrming Hmewrk, Richard Walker and Mike Hrsley write that while hmewrk isn't very beneficial fr yunger kids, it's still beneficial fr lder students. I cannt agree mre with them.
28. Why des the bilgy teacher require the students t d hmewrk?
A. T avid truble with sme students' parents.
B. T reduce students' anxiety in the classrm.
C. T fcus n mre imprtant activities in class.
D. T meet the schl's requirements n hmewrk.
29. What can be knwn abut the Japanese students?
A. They can easily get int their dream clleges.
B. They have mre academic wrk utside f schl.
C. They perfrm academically wrse than American kids.
D. They have a lt f wrk assigned by their schl teachers.
30. Why are Richard Walker and Mike Hrsley mentined?
A. T recmmend their bk t the parents.
B. T supprt the authr's pinin n hmewrk.
C. T criticize the misleading ideas in their bk.
D. T defend the authr's assignment fr his students.
31. What is the best title fr the text?
A. Different Views n Hmewrk B. Hmewrk in Japan and the US
C. Parents' Anxiety Over Hmewrk D. A Teacher's Defense fr Hmewrk

Bats have attracted scientists fr centuries. And nw, engineers at Califrnia Institute f Technlgy (Caltech) have created a "BatBt", a small drne(無(wú)人機(jī))that cpies the flight patterns f the small, muse-like flyers. During a test, the BatBt was able t fly under 100 feet fr 10 minutes.
"Bats are extremely stupid in terms f hw cmplex they are," said Dan Riskin, a bilgist at University f Trnt, wh wasn't invlved in the prject. "They have a tail and shulders that can mve in all the ways that an insect can d, but then they have elbws and wrists, five fingers and thumbs that cntrl parts f the wings."
That's what the researchers at Caltech quickly learned when they set ut t build a bat-like rbt. S they simplified the design by just cpying the mvements f the wing's basic cmpnents: the tail, the shulders, the elbws and the wrists. Their device's wings are frmed frm a single super-thin film made f silicne(硅酮). Its bnes are made f carbn fibre, and its jints are 3D-printed plastic t lighten the lad.
Althugh nt every part f a real bat is replicated and the bat rbt may nt be able t d everything a bat can d yet, it's already helping scientists t understand hw real bats wrk. "Yu'll have a lt f truble trying t cnvince a real bat t fly the same path 10 times in a rw t see hw it mves its jints, but a rbt will quite happily d all f the experiments yu culd ever want," said Sn-J Chung, ne f the Caltech engineers. "It will help us understand the secrets f bat flight and prvide clues(線索)int hw t make better drnes. They have sft wings, s the ptential fr injury might be less, and bat bts culd be quieter."
When asked abut a future BatBt 2.0, he replied, "I think hanging upside dwn is actually very interesting mvement that rbtics researchers have nt reprduced yet. S, hpefully we'll be the first nes ding s."
32. Which parts are left ut f the BatBt's design?
A. Bnes and wings. B. Elbws and wrists.
C. Shulders and tail. D. Fingers and thumbs.
33. Which f the fllwing can replace the underlined wrd "replicated" in paragraph 4?
A. Selected. B. Made. C. Cpied. D. Studied.
34. What des Sn-J Chung think f the BatBt?
A. It can be a helpful tl. B. It is t cmplex.
C. It is a perfect drne. D. It is still t nisy.
35. What is the text mainly abut?
A. The secrets abut bats. B. The cmplexity f bats' wings.
C. The inventin f a bat rbt. D. Ways t update BatBt 1.0.
