Although Ripton Rosen was a white boy living in a luxurious penthouse (豪華公寓), he liked to play baseball with his black teammates of the same street. Ripton sometimes invited the boys to his home to play video games. As time went on, several of them became frequent visitors to the 16th-floor penthouse. In time, the group developed into five regulars(??? :Will and Kindu, Philippe Medina, Juan Carlos Rob-inson and Carlos Suarez.
“In the beginning, it was just a lot of kids moving all over the place,” says Michael, Ripton's father. Things then began changing in small ways. When the Rosens realized Carlos wasn't attending school because he didn't have suitable clothes, they bought him some. Then one night, they took the group to a bookstore after a Chinese dinner and realized there were other_needs. “The boys had no interest in books at all,” Michael says. Back at the penthouse, he insisted they sit down to read aloud and start a half-hour reading period before video games or television every day.
Slowly the five black boys became a necessary part of the Rosen family. Housework was assigned, including cleaning, loading the dishwasher and walking Mr Jenkins, the family dog.
The boys' own families were puzzled by what was happening. “My mom didn't believe me when I told her about the penthouse,” says Kindu. “She thought I was involved with something bad.” Juan Carlos's mother, Esther Ruiz, wondered, “Why would the Rosens be doing this?” But as time went on, she noticed changes in her son. “He was geting responsible. A Book Review—The Snake-Stone by Berlie Doherty
The setting: Urban England(the cities),but also rural England( the countryside)including remote English villages.
The theme:The main theme is a teenage search of self-discovery,in this case the search for a mother from whom the hero was separated at an early age. Its other concerns are love, getting on with others, being persistent and courageous and trying to deal with doubts, troubles and worries. As the book moves to a close,James' swimming coach says to him,“You are not like a kid obeying instructions any more. You are diving like a young man who knows where he is going.”
The characters:James is the hero of the story. He is a championship diver, and has a comfortable life with his foster parents(養(yǎng)父母). Yet he also has the qualities to take him on a long journey to find his birth mother. The other characters in The Snake-Stone, James' parents, his diving instructor, best friend, the villagers, people he meets on his journey, are pictured realistically.
The turning point:The turning point in the story comes while James' foster parents are away in London, and he wonders about the identity of his birth mother. The only clue he has is a fossil,“the snake stone” which she left behind along with a note on which she had written ,“Take good care of Sammie.” It was written on a torn envelope with parts of an address still there.
The journey: Instead of going to London, James decides to find his birth mother. With help from his geography teacher, James sets out for the remote country village where his mother might be found. James has painful, challenging, but also humorous and happy travels. The mother he finally meets, Anne, has a minor yet powerful voice in the novel. He comes to understand why she left him at a stranger's door fifteen years before. Although the meeting is not long,it leaves him with a feeling of completeness. As a journey of self-discovery The Snake-Stone also provides its readers with a happy ending. Its hero says, on returning to his foster parents,“I was home.”
60.What is the main theme of the novel?
    A.Life with foster parents.
B.Life in the world of diving.

The meaning of the word “volunteer” may be a little different in different countries, but it usually means“one who offers his or her services”. There are many different ways in which people can volunteer, such as taking care of sick people, working in homes for homeless children, and picking up the waste from beaches and parks. Volunteers may work within their own countries or in other countries. They are often people with a strong wish to help those who are less fortunate than themselves. Volunteers don't expect any kind of pay.
At the root of volunteering is the idea that one person may have the ability to offer services that can help other people. Tracy ,a good friend of mine, however, recently came back from India with a new idea of what being a volunteer means. She worked for two and a half weeks in one of Mother Teresa's homes in Calcutta. The following is her story.
“I first heard about Mother Teresa in my high school when we watched a video about her work in India and all over the world. I was so moved by her spirit to help others and her endless love for every human being that after I graduated from high school, I, too, wanted to try her kind of work. So with two friends I flew to Calcutta for a few weeks.”
“I was asked to work in a home for sick people. I helped wash clothes and sheets, and pass out lunch. I also fed the people who were too weak to feed themselves and tried to cheer them up. I felt it was better to share with them than to think that I have helped them. To be honest,I don't think I was helping very much. It was then that I realized that I had not only come to help, but also to learn about and experience another culture that helped improve my own understanding of life and the world.”
64.What's the best title of this passage?
A.Volunteers Sharing As Well As Helping
B.Volunteers Washing As Well As Cleaning
C.Volunteers Cheering As Well As Planting
D.Volunteers Caring As Well As Understanding
    答案:A 標題歸納題。從文章的開頭及結(jié)尾都已表達出“Volunteer”的兩層含義及“通過幫助別人學(xué)習(xí)對方文化以幫助自己對生活及整個世界的理解?!惫蔬xA項。
65.According to the text,a volunteer refers to a person who ________.
A.is willing to help those in need without reward
B.can afford to travel to different places
C.has a strong wish to be successful
D.has made a big fortune in life
    答案:A 細節(jié)理解題。由文章第一段最后一句“volunteers don't expect any kind of pay”可知。

    B.a(chǎn)fter she finished high school
    C.when she was touring Calcutta
D.when she was working in a hospital
答案:B 細節(jié)理解題。文章第三段倒數(shù)第二句“...after I graduated from high school,I,too wanted to try her kind of work”已告知特雷西是中學(xué)畢業(yè)后從事志愿者工作的。
    D
Many plants and animals live together, and they depend on each other. They are usually very different from their sharing partner, and yet all live easier lives because of each other. It is nature's idea of sharing.
An example of this is the shark and pilot fish. The pilot fish is a little guy and he would be helpless if he hung around by himself in the great ocean. But his smartness makes up for his size. He cleverly swims along beside the shark and when the shark eats, the pilot fish gets the leftovers. The shark also benefits from this relationship. The pilot fish cleans food scraps (碎屑) and insects from the shark's skin.
Another example is the sea anemone (??? and striped clown fish. The sea anemone looks like a flower but contains poisonous cells. When small fish swim into it, the anemone traps and paralyzes (使麻痹) them. However, the striped clown fish is able to swim into the poisonous anemone without being harmed. To pay for his safety, the clown fish brings food to the anemone. He also guides other fish into the anemone's deadly trap.
Large mammals such as the ox, antelope and African buffalo form such a relationship with the oxpecker. They provide daily meals to the bird that eats insects. The various large mammals act as a restaurant with a varied menu for the oxpecker. What do they get in return from the bird? Free beauty treatments!
Some plants live together in a beneficial relationship. Fungus (菌類) does not have chlorophyll (葉綠素) that plants need to make food. However, the green alga (海藻) does contain chlorophyll. It is, therefore, able to feed the fungus along with itself. But nothing is free! The fungus repays it by protecting the alga. Since it takes in and stores water, it can provide the alga with an unending water supply.

“Everyone's initial reaction was just: 'What?' They thought I was mad,” said Kate Brady on how people responded when she told them she was donating a kidney to a stranger. But Kate held a firm desire to benefit someone else and donated her kidney to a man through a London hospital. This type of donation is not available in Ireland but is available in other countries such as the UK (since 2006) and the US.
Kate, who is 32 and from Brittas, Co Dublin, had long been a blood donor (捐獻者), but the thought of donating a kidney came from the film Seven Pounds. Will Smith's character tries to benefit as many people's lives as possible, and his methods include kidney and bone marrow(骨髓) donation.
“I saw that and was so inspired at the end of the film. You can get your inspiration from everywhere—an article, a book, a conversation. I thought of all those people stuck in hospital beds and not being able to live while I had two kidneys and could live completely well on one. With my health, I just never get sick and I feel really strong—both physically and mentally as well.”
Kate says her mind was made up while driving home from the cinema, and she decided that if the risks of kidney donation all seemed reasonable, she was going to go ahead and do it.
“I went home and researched it for a while. I was okay with the risks—obviously they were there, but I felt there were risks with every operation. So I rang up a place in Dublin saying I'd like to volunteer but they said it was not possible to donate to a stranger in Ireland and the closest place would be the UK.”
That was in 2008. Life took Kate to Boston for a year and then she got a job in London. She is still there and works as a behavior analyst (心理分析醫(yī)師) with autistic children.

Li Lei,my classmate, is a very determined boy with big eyes and curly hair. You can't imagine that he is judged as the best basketball player this term though he is very short compared to other players.
One year ago when he told us his dream of being an excellent basketball player, few believed in him. However, he neglected what we had said and made great efforts to realize it. Now, he has made it. He was often found on the school playground, with a basketball in his hand, shooting over and over again, sometimes until dark. Even though his coach once told him that he would never succeed considering his height, he just shrugged it off and went on with his practice. It is true that where there is a will, there is a way.
