It seemed like a typical November day, a month after my grandmother had passed away. I was?frustrated by everything that was going on around me.
I was mad and confused about everyone especially when I saw a young girl walking through?the store holding her grandmother’s hand. The little girl was begging her grandmother for ice cream?just like I used to when I was young. I was jealous of the little girl, because she had something I?didn’t have anymore — a grandmother by her side.
I had to force myself to ignore the little girl. She was just too happy for me and that was?unacceptable at that time in my world.
I went to the cash register to pay for my things. It was then that my anger quickly shifted from?the little girl to the cashier. She took my things to another register. When the cashier gave me my?change I didn’t say thank you. I simply took my change and left.
Feeling tired and hopeless, I began walking to my car. As I stood in?a public parking lot a?million questions formed in my mind. Why did this happen to me? Aren’t we supposed to get signs?from the people that passed on? Why didn’t I feel her presence anymore?
Suddenly, a woman driving right by my side rolled down her window. “Excuse me, excuse me,?excuse me,” she said loudly. Thinking she was going to ask for my parking spot, I simply?pointed?to my car. “No, excuse me,” she said again.
Then I felt I had no choice but to see what this annoying lady wanted. She reached to the very?bottom of her bag and handed me a three-page booklet. “It looks like that you need this,” she said calmly with a smile on her face.
I looked down at the used booklet and there were some big bold letters on the front cover?reading, “What Hope for Dead Loved Ones?” By the time I looked up she had gone.
I felt a sense of relaxation as I read the first page. It explained how people pass on and that?their spirit remains with us. It was the first time since my grandmother passed away that I had felt?her with me. I didn’t know whether to laugh or cry, but I knew that I finally felt happiness from a?stranger.

Throughout history scientists have risked their health and their lives in their search for the truth.
Sir Issac Newton, the seventeenth century scientist was very smart, but that didn't stop him from doing some pretty stupid things. In his laboratory in Cambridge, he often did the strangest experiments. Once, while testing how light passes through lenses (晶狀體), he put a long needle into his eye, pushed it to the back, and then moved it around just to see what would happen. Luckily, there was no lasting bad effect. On another occasion, he stared at the sun, for as long as he could bear, to discover what effect this would have on his sight. To escape suffering permanent damage, he had to spend some days in a dark room before his eyes recovered.
In the 1750s, the Swedish chemist Karl Scheele, was the first person to find a way to produce phosphorus (磷) He, in fact, discovered eight more chemical elements, including Chlorine (氯), though he didn't get any place for them. He was a very clever scientist, but he had a strange habit of tasting a little of every substance he studied. This risky practice finally caught up with him. In 1786, he was found dead in his laboratory, surrounded by a large number of dangerous chemicals, any of which might have been responsible for his death.
Eugene Shoemaker was a respected geologist, he spent a large part of his life studying craters (隕石坑), and how they were formed, and later the research into the comments of the plane Jupiter. In 1997, he and his wife were in the Australian desert, where they went every year search for places where comets (彗星) might have hit the earth. While driving in the Tanam desert, one of the most open places in the world, another vehicle rushed into them, and Shoe maker died on the spot. Some of his ashes (骨灰) were sent to the moon by the Lunar Prospect or, a spacecraft, and he is the only person who has this honor.
28. What does the underlined word "permanent" in Paragraph 2 mean?
A. Brief. B. Slight. C. Lasting. D. Ordinary.
29. What did Karl Scheele like doing when performing experiments?
A. Tasting chemicals. B. Staying in the empty labs.
C. Experimenting in darkness. D. Working together with others.
30. What special honor was Shoemaker given after his death?
A. He was buried in the Tanami desert. B. Some of his ashes were placed on the moon.
C. One comet of Jupiter was named after him.
D. A spacecraft carrying him travelled around Jupiter.
31. The text is mainly about three great scientists' __________.
A. special honors B. great achievements
C. famous experiments D. suffering in their research

Researchers in China and the United States have developed a new cataract(白內(nèi)障)treatment with cells that has restored vision in babies in a trial and may eventually be used in adults.
The treatment- by doctors and staff members at the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine and Sichuan and Sun Yat-sen universities in China-was published in March 9 edition of the scientific journal Nature.
A cataract is a clouding of the normally clear lens(晶體)of an eye. Typical cataract operation involves the removal of the cloudy lens and the insertion of an artificial one. The new operation has been tested in animals and during a small, human trial. It resulted in fewer complications(并發(fā)癥)than the current harmful operation, and in regrown lenses with superior visual function in all 12 of the baby cataract patients who received the procedure.
A congenital cataract- lens clouding that occurs at birth or shortly after- is important cause of blindness in children. In the new research, Kand Zhang, head of ophthalmic genetics at US San Diego’s Shiley Eye Institute, and his colleagues relied on the regrown potential of endogenous(同源的)stem cells.
According to Zhang, endogenous stem cells are different from other stem cells that are typically grown in a laboratory, transplanted into a patient, and can have risks of immune(免疫的)rejection, infection or cancers. Zhang told CBS News, “We invented a new operation to make a very small opening at the side of a cataractous lens bag, remove the cataract inside, allow the opening to heal, and promote potential lens stem cells to regrow an entirely new lens with vision.”
The human trial involved 12 babies under the age of 2 who were treated with the new method, while 25 babies received the standard operation care. The latter group experienced a higher incidence of post- operation danger, early- onset eye high blood pressure and increased lens clouding. The scientists reported fewer complications and faster healing among the 12 babies who has the new procedure.
32. What is the text mainly about?
A. A new cataract treatment with stem cells B. The concept of the cataract
C. Bad effects of post-operation in the cataract D. The reasons why the cataract comes into being
33. Which of the following best describe the new cataract treatment according to the passage?
A. Convenient B. Comfortable C. Safe D. Cheap
34. What can we learn about the new cataract treatment?
A. It may be used widely B. It has more risks
C. It has been put into practice widely D. It can only restore vision in babies
35. What does the underlined word “congenital” in the fourth paragraph mean?
A.Strange B. Born C. Serious D. Dangerous.

Dear Terry,
Hi! My name is Li Hua, a Chinese middle school student. I learned from your post that you want to find a Chinese tutor and you can teach English in return. I am quite interested in it.
I think I’m fit for it. Firstly, Chinese is my mother tongue, and speaking it is a must for me to communicate with others in my daily life. Secondly, I tutored foreigners to learn Chinese last year. So I’ m quite confident that I can help you master the language.
In your post, you said you can help me with my English. It is just what I eagerly want. We can contact each other by video chat every night for half an hour in English and half an hour in Chinese. In this way, we can improve ourselves together.
I’m looking forward to your reply.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua
