listening t music r watching TV, there’s a chance that they wn’t hear yu-meaning yu nly get
mre and mre frustrated as yur shuting gets luder and cntinues t be ignred.
One mm wh had this very prblem has cme up with the perfect slutin, thugh, and all it takes
is a series f drbells. 43-year-ld Shelley Walker frm Essex was sick f shuting upstairs fr her
three sns-Tby, nine, Jacksn, seven, and Charlie, five-when dinner was n the table, s she bught
three drbells and fixed ne receiver in each f their bedrms, with the drbells themselves fixed in
the kitchen.
Nw, whenever dinner is ready, Shelley simply has t press the three drbells s that they ring in
her sns’ bedrms, and she said her kids gt excited hearing the drbells and raced dwnstairs in n
time. Shelly said,“I was sick f shuting and being ignred then running up t get the kids dwn fr
dinner. I just thught up the idea myself and thught it wuld be a better way t get their attentin. They
are really easy t use and they dn’t interfere( 干 擾 ) with each ther s I can call each child
independently. The sund f ‘ding-dng’ in their bedrm gets them dwnstairs very quickly.”
On her vide, ne persn cmmented, “Yu, my dear, are a bldy genius. I am ding this tday.
I’m s fed up with shuting my kids dwn fr their dinner.”Anther added,“I’ve dne this t. It wrks

Imagine a future where we can feast n meat, but n animals have been killed in the prcess. Only
16% f the UK ppulatin enjy a meat-free diet, accrding t statistics website Finder.cm. It seems
there is a call fr lab-grwn meat as a substitute t traditinal meat. But, despite years f expectatin,
this futuristic fd is still nt n ur plates. Why?
One f the biggest reasns is cst. The first ever lab-grwn hamburger was intrduced in 2013 by
Dutch scientist Mark Pst. It was created frm beef cells and cst mre than $300,000. Lab-grwn
meat prductin ges frm thusands t hundreds f thusands f US dllars per unce-that’s the
weight f abut tw chicken nuggets(雞塊). This expense is partly due t the cst f raw materials that
‘feed’ the cells-a cmbinatin f sugar, prteins and ther nutrients is added t the cells.
In 2023, US-based cmpany Upside Fds received authrity frm the US Department f
Agriculture and the Fd and Drug Administratin t start selling lab-grwn meat. In rder t d this,
the cmpany has had t take n significant ecnmic lsses s that they can price it fairly cmpared t
traditinal meat. An investr in Upside Fd, Lisa Feria, tld Frbes magazine “Prfitability is very
much years ff because the biggest challenge ahead f them is: can we make it at millins f tns a year
and finally slightly cmpete with traditinal meat?”
There are als envirnmental csts. A 2023 study by the University f Califrnia fund that the
prcess f prducing lab-grwn meat culd have a fur t 25 times higher impact n glbal warming
than beef, which is generally the highest-plluting meat. This is mstly because f the emissins needed
t create ‘feed’.
S, it seems unlikely that we’ll be eating lab-grwn meat just yet, and we pssibly never will. After
all, n cmpany wuld take a risk f bankrupt t create a prduct that is f higher cst than prfit as
well as nt envirnment-friendly.
28. What can be knwn frm the first paragraph ?
A. Mst f the British eat a diet withut meat.

Elephants, the largest land mammals n the planet, are magnificent creatures and turists rush t
African cuntries t see them. Due t very successful cnservatin effrts, the African elephant
ppulatin in cuntries like Kenya is grwing. In the cuntry’s ppular Tsav Natinal Park, elephant
numbers went frm arund 6,000 t almst 15,000 in 2021.
While this is great news fr cnservatinists, it’s nt seen that way by farmers wh live in between
tw parts f the park. The human ppulatin has als grwn and this means that it affects elephants’
feeding and migratin areas, which has led t cnflicts( 沖 突 ) between humans and elephants,
smetimes resulting in elephant deaths.
Nw a new slutin using hneybees has been fund t keep the elephants away frm farms. This
seemingly unlikely slutin is part f a lng-running prject frm the Save the Elephants rganizatin.
The sund f African hneybees prevents elephants. Nw yellw-painted beehive fences(蜂 巢 圍 欄 )
prtect sme f the lcal areas. The prject is supprting 40 farmers whse crps are prtected by 15
hives. Each f the hives is strung n a wire a few meters ff the grund. This prtects them frm insects
and allws them t shake if they are disturbed by an elephant, which starts the bees making sunds.
This frightens the elephant away.
A nine-year study tracked 26 farms that were prtected by the beehive fences in tw villages near
the park. During the high grwing seasns—Nvember t January frm 2014 t 2020—3,027 elephants
apprached the fences and mst were prevented. During the drught f 2017, which reduced the number
f bees in the hives by 75%, elephants were still prevented 76% f the time.
Save the Elephants is nw prmting beehive fences in 15 cuntries in Africa and Asia. But
besides preventing elephants, the beehive fences can prvide ther benefits t cmmunities. Bees
prvide pllinatin services which can increase crp prductin and hney frm the hives that farmers
can sell t increase their incme.
While this slutin isn’t perfect, and is subject t the negative effects f climate change and
drught, it des shw that elephants and humans can share the land withut cnflicts.
32. What can be inferred frm the first tw paragraphs?
A. The elephants are the mst attractive creatures t turists in Kenya.
B. The prtectin effrts f elephants in Kenya are in vain.
C. The elephant ppulatin grwth in Kenya mixes happiness with sadness.
D. The increasing migratin areas in Kenya have caused many elephants’ deaths.
